The Academy disqualifies Nigeria’s Oscar entry Lionheart

The Academy has disqualified Nigeria’s “Lionheart” from the Oscar race in the Best International Feature Film category, dropping the number of films competing for the award to 92 from what had been a record 93 entries.

This year’s field is now tied with 2017’s as the largest in the category’s history. Snce “Lionheart” was made by actress-turned-director Genevieve Nnaji, its disqualification drops the number of female directors in this year’s race to 28, which is still a category record.

It was the first film ever submitted to the Oscars by Nigeria.

“Lionheart,” in which Nnaji also stars, is partially in the Igbo language of Nigeria. But it is mostly in English, which violates an Academy rule that entries in the category must have “a predominantly non-English dialogue track.”

The film had not been vetted by the Academy’s International Feature Film Award Executive Committee in advance of the Oct. 7 announcement of qualifying films but was recently viewed and determined not to qualify in a category that until this year was known as Best Foreign Language Film.

Iraq shuts down internet again as protests intensify

Internet access in the capital Baghdad and much of Iraq has been cut off, internet blockage observatory NetBlocks said late on Monday as the country experiences a wave of anti-government protests.

“At the time of writing, national connectivity has fallen below 19% of normal levels sending tens of millions of users offline across Baghdad, also impacting Basra, Karbala and other population centers. The new disruption is believed to be the most severe observed in Iraq to date,” NetBlocks said in a statement.

LASU student Afeez docked for raping 2 muslim virgins

Two muslim students of the Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday narrated before an Ikeja Special Offences Court how they were robbed and r.a.p.e.d at gunpoint by a fellow student, Afeez Ogunbowale.

The students, who were both wearing niqabs (Islamic garment which covers the body leaving the eyes uncovered), in a two-hour testimony revealed to the court that they lost their virginity in the attack.

They made the claims while testifying as prosecuting witnesses during the trial of Ogunbowale, over alleged robbery and rape. In his Facebook post, Ogunbowale had attended Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta before coming to LASU in 2017.

Led in evidence by Mrs. O.A Bajulaiye-Bishi, the prosecuting counsel, the students, who were roommates, told the court that they were 200 level students when the alleged rape and robbery occurred on April 18, 2018.

The witnesses told the court that at around 3a.m., a torch was flashed into their apartment, awakening them suddenly and five men, including Ogunbowale, who were armed with a gun and machetes, forced themselves in.

Student A (name withheld), 23, told the court “they took three phones, a gold chain, earpiece, power bank and N1, 200. Three of the men left, leaving the defendant and one other person who I cannot identify.

“The defendant told the other guy ‘I want to sleep with these girls’. The defendant went to the toilet with my roommate while the second man tried to rape me.

“The second man could not penetrate me because I had an asthmatic attack and the second man left me to swap places with the defendant.

“The defendant came and had sex with me while I had the asthmatic attack and my roommate was screaming and pleading for him to leave me alone and he said in pidgin English ‘if she wan die, make she die’.

“The other three men came back into the apartment and saw the chaos. They told the two other men that this was not what they came here to do and they assisted in looking for my inhaler. My inhaler was found and they all left my apartment.”

Student A told the court that they lodged a report at the Ojo Barracks and they were referred to the Mirabel Center for medical examination and counselling.

“The case was transferred to the Festac Police Station, then to the Ikeja Police Station. When the defendant was apprehended and brought to the Ikeja Police Station, he was shocked when he saw us there.

“He went on his knees and said to us in Yoruba ‘Alhaja please’,” Student A said.

While being cross-examined by Mr Bisi Salau, the defence counsel, Student A said that she recognised Ogunbowale as her assailant because she had seen him a number of times on campus.

She noted that the residence where the alleged crime occurred belonged to her aunt.

“I was a virgin until the day that incident occurred, I cannot remember the exact date I went to the Mirabel Center. When I reported the incident at the Ojo Barracks, they called to inform the Vice-Chancellor of LASU about it.

“The five men who came to our apartment were armed with a gun and the defendant was the one who carried the gun, he touched me with the gun.

“The defendant has a group of friends in my class and his friend sent me a friendship request on Facebook.

“When I looked through his friends list, I saw the defendant’s photograph which I gave to the campus Department of State Security (DSS) official.

“I saw the defendant on campus and alerted the campus security. He was apprehended in September 2018,” Student A said.

Student B (name withheld),20, while giving her testimony narrated how Ogunbowale allegedly raped her.

“The defendant took me to the toilet and pointed a gun at my head, that day I was still a virgin and it was difficult for him to penetrate into me. He said to me ‘you never do am before.’

“He took me to a chair and raped me and the second man left my roommate and exchanged places with him and raped me as well.

“After we had reported the incident to authorities, we were examined and counselled. We had to go there over a long period of time but we had to cut that short because of our exams.

“We could not even take some of our medication because of our school examination,” she said.

The alleged culprit Ogunbowale pleaded not guilty during his arraignment for five-counts of robbery and rape.

The case was adjourned till Nov. 25 for further hearing.

Woman who spent £14k on her body goes blind after getting her eyeballs tattooed

A tattoo addict went blind for three weeks after undergoing an agonising procedure to turn her eyes blue.

Amber Luke, 24, from Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia, has spent £13,901 on transforming her looks, having her tongue split, earlobes stretched and other 'modifications'.

These include 200 tattoos, a boob job, lip and cheek fillers and ear spike implants, however getting her eyes tattooed was the most painful of them all.

Ms Luke, who refers to herself as the 'Blue Eyed White Dragon', said: "I can't even begin to describe to you what the feeling was like.

"The best thing I can give you is once the eyeball was penetrated with the ink, it felt like (the tattoo artist) grabbed 10 shards of glass and rubbed it in my eye.

"That happened four times per eye, that was pretty brutal. Unfortunately, my artist went too deep into my eyeball."

She added that the procedure does not cause blindness if done correctly, Mail Online reports.

The ordeal has put the Australian off undergoing further extreme body modifications, although she plans to keep getting tattoos until she is fully covered.

Ms Luke's mum, Vikki, broke down in tears after finding out about about her daughter's eyeball treatment.

Vikki said she questioned why her daughter took the risk, however she has accepted that there is nothing she can do to deter her.

The mother emphasised that she just wanted to support her daughter, who never saw herself as beautiful while growing up.

Ms Luke said she has no regrets about her 10-year transformation.

The 'body modifier' claims to have received a mix of negative and positive feedback from strangers about her looks.

Abba Kyari takes bill to Buhari in London for signing

The Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, on Monday took a bill to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is in London on a private visit, for signing.

The bill amended the Deep Offshore (and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract) Act.

The President on Twitter described the signing as a landmark moment for Nigeria. In a photo which was posted on social media, Kyari, who was wearing a suit, was seen presenting the bill to the President who was sitting down.

Buhari, will be in London for the next two weeks, failed to transfer power to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo as he had done several times in the past.

This implies that all memos, bills and other documents requiring the President’s signature must be taken to London for signing.

Disturbing reason Britney Spears shaved her head finally confirmed 12 years after breakdown

Fans could only look on in horror as Britney Spears hit the self-destruct button in 2007 amid a harrowing breakdown.

In the space of 14 months, an all-too public battle with mental illness saw her fade from a million-dollar selling pop princess into a broken and vulnerable star, who had to be wheeled out of her own home strapped to a gurney.

But perhaps one of the most profoundly tragic images from that time was of Britney shaving her own head.

The shocking incident unfolded after she fled rehab in Antigua and turned up at ex-husband Kevin Federline's house, demanding to see their sons Sean and Jayden.

But when he refused, an angry and frustrated Britney drove to a random hair salon and asked hairdresser Esther Tognozz to shave her head... in front of more than 70 members of the paparazzi.

Tognozz tried to talk her out of it, but once her back was turned, Britney grabbed the clippers and sheared her locks herself.

Meanwhile, her bodyguards did nothing.

"She had two bodyguards supposedly keeping an eye out to make sure the paparazzi were not getting any pictures," Tognozz recalls in new Channel 5 documentary, Britney Spears - Breaking Point, as footage shows aides laughing with photographers.

The saddest part though, was Britney's expression as her manic smile gave way to panic and grief when she realised what she'd done.

Crestfallen, she fretted that her "mum was going to be p***ed" before moving on to Body and Soul Tattoo studio.

Now, speaking out for the first time, tattooist Emily Wynne-Hughes recalls hearing "an insane roaring sound outside" as Britney and the paps pulled up.

"I wasn't sure what was happening, if there was a riot outside and then the flashes came. The door opened slowly and a hooded figure walked in the door," she says.

Britney demanded a tattoo of another woman's lips to begin with, followed by a small cross.

And it was Wynne-Hughes who she chose to confide in about her reasons for shaving her head.

"I noticed her hair was gone. I remember asking here, 'why do you shave your head?' And her answer was a bit weird," the tattooist says.

"It was, you know, 'I just don't want anybody, anybody touching my head. I don't want anyone touching my hair. I'm sick of people touching my hair.'"

Amber Rose bonds with ex Wiz Khalifa's new girlfriend at son Sebastian's baseball game

When it comes to parenting their son Sebastian, it's clear exes Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa are on the same page.

The two spent the day together on Sunday, alongside their new partners, to watch the  six-year-old play baseball.

And far from being awkward, the group seemed to be having a wonderful time, with Amber even bonding with Wiz's new love  Aimee Aguilar.

One family member was notably absent - Amber's newborn son, Slash Electric Alexander, who she welcomed with her boyfriend Alexander 'AE' Edwards just three weeks ago.

For her day out, Amber rocked a statement black sweater and camouflage inspired leggings.

Amber's current boyfriend, Alexander Edward was also seen chatting to her ex Wiz, who got into the spirit of things with his blue Dodger's T-shirt that he wears at each game.

Pius Adesanmi's family and his widow at loggerheads... reveals he has another daughter

Indeed these are not the best times for Late professor Pius Adesanmi's family and his widow.

According to a statement released by his family, Pius' widow and Ethiopian airline have not been carrying them along.

His widow is also been accused of burying their son without informing them, his aged mother and his eldest daughter.

They also said it has been made to look in public like Puis was survived by only one daughter, and in actual fact, they are two. She has been named as 12-year old Damilola Adesanmi who was also born in a legal marriage. The family's statement...

“It is now evident, that our late son’s remains were interred in Ottawa without family consent and contrary to the wish of the deceased to be buried in his place of birth, Isanlu. To our shock and chagrin, this internment was carried out without the knowledge or consent of Prof. Adesanmi’s aged mother and his eldest daughter,” a family representative, Mike Oyelude, said in a statement.

Read the full statement below.

Saturday November 2, 2019 made it exactly one week since we read on social media about the purported burial of our son, the late Prof. Pius Adebola Adesanmi. This burial reportedly took place in Ottawa on October 26, 2019. Since the so-called burial, we have waited for confirmation and used established channels to find out what really happened.

It is now evident, that our late son’s remains were interred in Ottawa without family consent and contrary to the wish of the deceased to be buried in his place of birth, Isanlu. To our shock and chagrin, this internment was carried out without the knowledge or consent of Prof. Adesanmi’s aged mother and his eldest daughter.

Since the death of our son in the ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines crash, we have been subjected to unspeakable disrespect, deceit and discourtesy by Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines and Prof Adesanmi’s widow in Ottawa. We want to place on record that neither Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines nor Prof. Adesanmi’s widow Olumuyiwa Balogun has done right by the family. We have not been called nor informed about the accident till date.

Prof. Adesanmi was born in Isanlu, in Kogi State to the Adesanmi family. We raised our son in the best custom of our ancestors and the Christian faith. Although his father, Pa Adesanmi passed before his son in relative old age, he is survived by his aged mother Mama Lois Adesanmi and two young daughters Oluwadamilare and Oluwatise. It is public knowledge in official and private circles that both children were born to Prof. Adesanmi in Ottawa to different mothers, in lawful wedlock.

FIRS AD

Oluwadamilare ‘Dammy’ Adesanmi was born in wedlock to Pius and Oluwatosin in Ottawa. That makes Dammy a bona-fide Canadian citizen. It is disdainful to make it appear as if Pius is survived by one child. In our culture and before the law, children born in lawful wedlock have equal status before the law and society.

We are shocked and totally distraught to explain to the world that in regard to the shambolic burial in Ottawa on October 26, neither Mama Lois Adesanmi nor 12-year old Dammy were contacted by either Boeing or Ethiopian Airlines or Prof. Adesanmi’s surviving widow. Indeed since our world crashed with Pius last March, nobody has deemed it fit to officially contact his family in any official capacity.

If the airlines whose negligence led to the untimely death of our son has made contact with anyone on our behalf, it was incumbent on them to ensure that we were duly carried along by way of official information and that our consent is sought as to how our son’s remains would be interred.

We would like to place it on record that neither the airline nor anyone else bothered to seek our consent or approval before the purported ceremony in Ottawa.

Since March 10, we have struggled not to be offended by the disdainful disrespect to the soul of the dead and the indescribable agony to those precious to our son. No travesty of justice could befall a grieving mother than to learn about the interment of her only son via social media.

While one daughter was visibly present at the October 26 last event, we are at a loss as to how to explain to Dammy that her father has been buried without her knowledge or consent. This is incredibly agonizing for all of us except the organizers of the charade in Ottawa and their collaborators.

From third parties, we have been told that the decision to bury Adesanmi in Ottawa was taken by Ethiopian Airline in cahoots with the Canadian government just because Adesanmi identifies as a Nigerian-Canadian. It is on record publicly, that Pius expressed his wish to be buried in Isanlu, in Yagbaland almost half a decade before it happened. That dying wish has been flagrantly and disrespectfully discountenanced without an agreement by those most concerned.

If anybody could have overruled Pius’s wish on his final resting place, it ought to have been all members of his immediate family. We do not know of any law, norm or convention that disenfranchises the living, active and normal family members of a victim of a monumental tragedy such as has befallen us a say on their final wish.

It is obvious that, Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines and others working in cahoots with whoever carried out this insult upon a grave injury when it assented to this sham burial in Ottawa.

We are convinced that it is repugnant to natural justice to completely ostracise Dammy, Professor Adesanmi’s first seed from her father’s burial. Dammy is truly a teenager, but her rights are inalienable. Those rights have been trampled upon consistently since March 10.

It is most disrespectful that the shambolic funeral in Ottawa was deliberately organized to coincide with Mama Adesanm’s 78th birthday. We refuse to believe that this was not done deliberately to maximise the pain, the suffering and the agony of our matriarch. This was why, Pius’s best friends refused to dishonour his remains by attending this charade. We are in solidarity with their stance. The emotional and psychological damage brought by this purported burial has increased the obvious disrespect to the psychological and emotional well-being of the Adesanmi family by both Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines and those who lent their names and presence to it. We have waited since March 10 for explanations without any. We have now waited for over a week to hear that this nightmare is not happening. Alas, it appears to be true!

This statement is issued notwithstanding our rights in law, but in response to men and women of goodwill whose calls, messages and outreach has comforted us during this trying times. To those who have wondered why we did not call or invite them, we categorically say we learnt of the event less than a week before it happened from concerned friends. Even at that, we made strident efforts through living intermediaries to postpone the ceremony until at least Dammy could be present to say her final goodbye to her dad. We were met with concrete walls.

To our friends we say please be reassured that we would never have disrespected you like this. We are as much victims of the subterfuge that has been going on and the attempt by Boeing, Ethiopia Airlines and others to cause ill-will and disaffection in the Adesanmi family by their divide and rule tactics.

We remain resolute and would pursue our rights in law and in the courts of public opinion. We are committed to not impugning the legacy of our son by those who killed our joy and also purport to bury our dignity with him in Ottawa.

Some people planning to kill my aides, kidnap me, Benue Governor, Ortom claims

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue alleged on Sunday in Makurdi that he once heard that some people are planning to kill his security aides, kidnap him and dismember his body parts by parts until he dies.

Ortom who prayed against this also stated that he had dismantled all negative tendencies often believed to deter progress in the Government House and the state.

He said this during a Special Thanksgiving Service organised in his honour by the Independent Print-Media Publishers Association of Nigeria (IPPAN), at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi.

“Since my arrival, I have dedicated a special time on daily basis to be with God because He works in miraculous ways; those working against me are wasting their time and will never succeed.

“I have dismantled the devils in Benue Government House; they cannot come near us again. The devil does not have a place in our government house again.

“I am not afraid of any human being. I once heard that some people are planning to kill my security aides, kidnap me and dismember me parts by parts until I die, but I have told them that God will not allow that to happen.

“I have brought myself close to God; there is no turning back. When people plan against me, l will always floor them because God is with me,” he said.

Ortom appealed to Benue people to exercise patience and judge his performance at the end of his second term, pointing out that he had already executed projects and policies that would benefit generations yet unborn.

Why I don't makeup for dead people- Banke Meshida

Celebrity make-up artist, Banke Meshida, has revealed why she no longer does makeup for dead people. She revealed this to Punch in an interview published by the medium over the weekend saying it actually gets her very emotional.

She said: “I’ve been called occasionally to do make-up for dead people but I declined. I didn’t like the first experience I had. It’s such a sorrowful space to be in and I couldn’t deal with it. It left such a bad taste. I found it emotionally draining and made up my mind that I wouldn’t do it again. It’s a completely different skill set because one is working on skin that is not living; the colour and shading would different. However, it is a very lucrative aspect of make-up artistry because not many people possess the skill. I do every other thing except making up for the dead.”

Lady left scarred for life after laser hair removal treatment caused second degree burns to her legs

A graduate has been scarred for life after a laser hair removal patch test left her with second degree burns.

Myah Jagjivan, 22, had to go to hospital after her leg started blistering and ‘ballooning’ following the treatment.

And the ‘excruciatingly painful’ procedure has left her with eight thick marks on her right leg.

She claims she missed a month of her final year of university, suffered from low moods and now rarely wears dresses.

Miss Jagjivan said she had been a regular customer at Taylor Taylor Nails & Beauty in Sheffield and knew salon owner Carmen Singleton ‘well’.

‘She told me about laser hair removal which she was offering in a bundle – five sessions for £500,’ she said. The Sheffield Hallam graduate booked in for a patch test, but quickly suspected that something was wrong.

‘You’re meant to feel a prick but it burnt and I jumped out of my skin with pain,’ she said. ‘It almost felt like I’d had a heart attack. I asked if it was a normal temperature and she said I must be sensitive. She continued to punch the marks right up my legs like a staple gun.’

Laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light that damages the hair follicle, inhibiting future hair growth.

When Miss Jagjivan got home, she said, blisters began developing on her leg.

‘I went straight to A&E and they told me I had a second degree burn and dressed it. My whole leg was ballooning. The pain was excruciating, it was so painful. I was only 21 and I just wanted my mum,’ she said.

Miss Jagjivan said Miss Singleton said she was ‘so sorry’, ‘felt terrible’ and asked if there was anything she could do to help.

But she claimed the burn became so severe it turned black and the fluid had to be drained.

‘Prior to this I was an outgoing fun character who loved going out in tiny dresses, however I have been stripped of this privilege,’ she said.

Miss Jagjivan says she wants people to be aware of the risks of treatments such as laser hair removal. Under current legislation, people who use lasers for cosmetic purposes do not have to register with health regulator the Care Quality Commission.

‘The industry needs to be more regulated,’ she said. ‘The current system is not efficient enough.’

Mothercare UK in crisis, might lay off all UK staff

Mothercare is reportedly considering placing its British operations in administration, putting 2,500 jobs at risk.

The company is said to have put administrators on standby and is finalising a restructuring plan.

This could mean administrators could be called in to its domestic division as soon as this week, according to Sky News.
