Former Chairman of Pension Reform Task Team (PRTM), Abdulrasheed Maina, was on Thursday, wheeled into Court 6, Federal High Court, Abuja, where his bail application is expected to be taken.

Maina, dressed in light green colour caftan, was in a wheelchair, looking pensive and sickly.

He was charged with 12 counts bordering on money laundering, operating fictitious bank accounts and fraud.

While Maina is the 1st defendant in the case, the company was the 2nd defendant.

On Monday, the court adjourned till Tuesday to take his application seeking an abridgment of time to hear his bail application earlier fixed for Nov. 19 and also for continuation of evidence by the prosecution’s first witness.

However, when the matter was called on Tuesday, Maina was not in court.

Eddie Murphy 'tried to stop Whitney Houston marrying Bobby Brown' on wedding day

Eddie Murphy allegedly made a last minute bid to stop Whitney Houston marrying Bobby Brown, according to a new memoir by the singer's closest friend.

Robyn Crawford has penned the book that shares intimate details of her friendship with superstar singer Whitney.

Crawford was the singer's best friend for more than three decades and she has recalled how Whitney was once infatuated with Hollywood star Eddie Murphy.

In her book, Crawford has revealed that while Bobby Brown pursued the attentions of Whitney in 1989, she was hoping for a bit of romance with Murphy, and "lost herself" in the process.

Crawford wrote: "She was more interested in Eddie Murphy, but he was elusive.”

They were supposedly meant to get together for a dinner date at Whitney's New Jersey mansion and she went all out to impress Murphy.

Crawford wrote about that night: "One day when Eddie was supposed to come for dinner, I caught a glimpse of Whitney.

"She was wearing a black dress and low-heeled slingbacks. For a moment, I thought ‘Boy, I wish she was doing that for me.'"

It was to end in sadness though as Murphy "never showed up that night,” leaving Whitney devastated by the rejection.

On the morning of her wedding day on July 18, 1992, Whitney was getting ready to say "I do" to Bobby Brown, when she received a surprise call from Murphy.

He was allegedly making a last ditch attempt to stop Whitney from tying the knot with the singer but it was to fall on deaf ears.

Crawford recalled: "[That day] Eddie Murphy called to say she was making a mistake, but she pressed ahead.”

Whitney's health and wellbeing would be on a slippery slope from then on and Crawford said that it was difficult watching her friend becoming isolated.

She is hoping that her book will redress the view of Whitney and share what a 'big hearted and generous friend' she was.

Crawford said: "I have a lot of beautiful, wonderful, exciting, adventurous, loving, caring memories of Whitney.

"Whitney was a beautiful friend, the friend that I prayed for."

Whitney's tragic death at the age of 48 came amid her spiralling descent into debt after blowing her $100million fortune on drugs.

She drowned in a bath at the Beverly Hilton hotel in February 2012, having binged on cocaine, cannabis and prescription drugs before her final moments.

Blind septuagenarian arraigned for dealing in Indian hemp

A visually impaired man, Kareem Adebayo, 77, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly being in possession of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Adebayo appeared before Magistrate Risikat Olayemi on two counts bordering on possession of Indian hemp.

The accused, it was learnt, was caught on November 5, 2019, around 6.30pm at the Odofin compound, Okuku, with a bag containing large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

He was also alleged to have conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 430 and 249 (d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38c Vol. 11, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police prosecutor, Rachael Idowu, explained that Adebayo had been arrested twice in the past by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, faced trial and spent several months in jail.

Upon regaining his freedom, Idowu said Adebayo returned to dealing in illicit drugs.

The accused did not have legal representation when he was arraigned.

Olayemi, in her ruling, transferred the case to the Okuku Magistrates’ Court for mention on November 11, 2019, because the offences were committed within the Okuku Magisterial District.

She also said the police should grant the accused bail because of his age and health condition pending his arraignment on November 11.

One year on... UK Police offer £20,000 reward for information on murder of Nigerian John Ogunjobi

On the one year anniversary of the murder of 16-year-old John Ogunjobi in Tulse Hill, UK detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

The UK Met Police said a reward of £20,000 was available for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for young Ogunjobis murder.

Police were called to Greenleaf Close, Tulse Hill at 10:53 pm on 5 November 2018.

Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and found the 16-year-old collapsed in the street with stab injuries.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:41 pm.

A post-mortem examination at Greenwich Mortuary gave cause of death as a stab wound.

Supt Richard Vandenbergh, investigating, said: “One year has passed since John was fatally attacked, but our determination to find those responsible and bring them to justice has not diminished.

“John was just 16-years-old and his life had barely begun. We believe he was attacked by a number of suspects, and know that the altercation was witnessed by a number of people, some of whom have still not come forward to tell police what they know. It is also quite likely that some of John’s own friends may hold vital information, but are yet to talk to us.

“I am all too aware that some young people may be reading who want to engage with us but are afraid that someone might find out. If that is you, I want you to know that we can work together, in the strictest of confidence. Or, if you prefer, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, 100% anonymously, and tell us what you know that way.

“It cannot be right that a young man’s murderer is walking around free while his devastated family still wake each day, not having properly begun to mourn yet. Work with us and we can get the justice John’s family deserve.”

Impeached Kogi Deputy Governor sues Bello, claims entitlement

The Impeached Deputy Governor of Kogi, Simon Achuba has sued Governor Yahaya Bello and the Attorney General, alleging among others, the non-payment of his salary and allowances.

In the suit marked: NICN/ABJ/244/2019 filed before the National Industrial Court in Abuja, Achuba wants the court to declare among others, that he is “entitled to all the rights and privileges of the Office of the Deputy Governor of Kogi State of Nigeria including the prompt payment of all his travel allowances, monthly impress, security votes and statutory allocations.”

He accused Bello and the AG of unlawfully withholding his salary and his other entitlements, which are all captured in the 2019 budget already passed by the state’s House of Assembly.

Achuba stated that his decision to resort to court action was informed by the defendants’ refusal to pay him despite repeated demands by his lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), who had written to them on the issue.

He said beside his salary, security votes, funds for the maintenance of his house, lodge and offices among others, there are other items of expenditure, which his office is entitled to under the appropriation laws of Kogi State, to include burial expenses, motor vehicle fuel cost, cooking gas, motor cycle/bicycle, public relations reporters cassettes recorders, purchase of rain boot, printing of file jackets, purchase of mower, cutlasses and shovels.

In his statement of claim, Achuba stated that his “security vote in the sum of N10million per-month has remained unpaid since April 2018 to August 2019 amounting to the total sum of N180m.”

He added that the monthly impress to his office in the sum of N18,224, 000 was last paid to the claimant in March 2018, now amounting to N328,032.000.00 as monthly impress due to the Claimant for the months of April 2018 August 2019.

Achuba is praying the court to order the defendants to pay him N911,572,758.00 being his travel allowances, monthly impress, security votes, and other statutory allocations due to his office as the Deputy Governor of Kogi State.

'No misunderstanding between Buhari and Osinbajo'

The Presidency has debunked reports of a misunderstanding between the Office of the President and the Vice President.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters Senator Babajide Omowurare made this clarification while briefing journalists at the National Assembly.

Responding to critics who have questioned President Buhari’s decision to sign the amended deep offshore Act in London, Senator Omowurare insisted that the constitution permits the President to work from anywhere.

He explains that the scenario is different from that of former President Umaru YarAdua and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan where the former was at the time unable to discharge his duties because of ill health.

He was however silent on why the President did not transmit a letter to the National Assembly, handing over responsibilities to the Vice President.

There have been ‘serial assaults’ on office of the Vice President – Odumakin

Social Commentator, Yinka Odumakin, has said that there have been ‘serial assaults’ on the office of the Vice President.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, he held the opinion that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had been stripped of many of his duties.

He said this in reaction to the President’s decision to sign a new bill on offshore oil fields.

The Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari’s had travelled to London on Monday to submit the new bill for his assent – a situation which has since sparked controversy and intensified speculations that Osinbajo has been sidelined.

According to him, although some may argue that some of the functions are at the discretion of the president, the transmission of power to the office of the Vice President when he is leaving the country is different as it is a constitutional matter.

“There have been serial assaults on that office for a long time now,” Odumakin stated.

“Since after Osinbajo sacked Lawan Daura, there has never been any data transmission to the National Assembly whenever the president is travelling out of the country.

“Outside that, we have seen that most of the functions given to his office have been stripped.

“Many of them have been taken to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

“You can say that most of those functions are at the discretion of the president but the question of the President’s transmission of power to the Vice President when he is leaving the country, is a constitutional matter.

“The constitution says that when the President is going out of the country, he shall write to the National Assembly, transmit to the Vice and when he comes back, he will send another letter… that has not been done in this case.

“What we have now seen is the Chief of Staff, taking bills to London for the President to sign”.

United Nations calls for action as Somalia floods affect 200,0000 children

At least 200,000 children are among more than half a million people affected by flooding in Somalia, the United Nations children agency said, calling for decisive action to help those at risk of malnutrition and disease outbreak.

In a statement on Tuesday, UNICEF said thousands of families are living in makeshift camps or in the open and are in dire need of clean water, sanitation, safe shelter, health and food supplies.

The UN humanitarian agency said on Wednesday heavy rains have affected 547,000 people in Somalia and displaced 370,000 people.

"Children are very vulnerable in times of emergency," said UNICEF Somalia Representative Werner Schultink.

"If we do not act decisively, the impact of these floods will be felt in Somalia long after the water levels recede," he added.

The rains and flooding have destroyed infrastructure and livelihoods in the Horn of Africa nation, according to the UN, which on Monday began delivering vital food packages and supplies to thousands of displaced people.

In the town of Beledweyne, in central Somalia, a river overflowed and at least 10 people died when a boat capsized trying to rescue stranded residents, locals said.

Schools have been forced to shut their doors due to flooding, while the rising waters also caused damage to buildings and widespread disruption.

Education officials said students and teachers have been forced to flee to higher ground where aid agencies are providing life-saving assistance, including shelter, to a quarter of a million people.

"A total of 86 schools have been affected by the floods. Around 700 teachers are also out of work as locals flee to higher ground due to floods in Beledweyne City and surrounding regions,'' said Mohamed Osman Elmi, education head of Hiran region.

Nigerian roads not as bad as being portrayed – Fashola

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said on Wednesday that Nigerian roads are not as bad as they are being portrayed.

He insisted that reports on the poor state of roads in the country are mere hype.

The minister stated this in a chat with State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Fashola said FEC approved the contract for the construction of Bida-Sachi-Nupeko road and the Nupeko-Patigi bridge across River Niger, linking Nupeko and Patigi in Niger and Kwara States at the sum of N58.488 billion.

He said the approved project would link Niger and Kwara together and facilitate connectivity from southwest to the north-central and the rest of the northern part of Nigeria. He said the project was an old contract that was awarded in 2013 but was terminated for non-performance, revaluated and awarded. The minister said: “It didn’t have a bridge then so we have added the bridge now and approved for N58.488 billion and is expected to take 30 months to complete.”

On the condition of Nigerian roads, he said the roads are not as bad as they are often portrayed.

“I know that this is going to be your headline, but the roads are not that bad,” he added. He further explained that but for funding challenges, most road projects would have been long completed.

Court orders GTBank to refund N4.6 million, $3,000 illegal debits to customer

The Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered Guaranty Trust Bank Plc to reverse funds illegally deducted from the account of one of its customers, Universal Agricultural Empowerment and Development Initiative (UNAEDI).

In his ruling on September 25 in suit No. FCT/HC/CV/2306/2017, Justice O.O. Goodluck ordered the bank to refund N412,000, $3,123.16 and N4,224,259 to the company’s account.

The court also ordered the bank to pay additional N100,000 as general damages to the company and its registered trustees, along with Osaretin Williams.

The monies were deductions from the customers’ account between March 9 and April 20, 2016 after the bank, on November 13, 2015, placed a lien on the account, which the court also declared illegal.

In his statement of claims, Samuel Irabo who is the counsel to UNAEDI and Mr Williams, asked the court to determine if GTBank has the right to unilaterally flag some transaction as ‘fraudulent’ after deducting bank charges from it.

Besides, Mr Irabo also asked the court to determine if the bank has the right to place a lien on his clients’ account and continue to deduct from it without informing, or explaining to the customer the reason for doing so.

The lawyer told the court that on November 13, 2015, the Wuse 2, Abuja branch of the GTBank placed a lien on his client’s account No 0164981107 operated under the Universal Agricultural Empowerment and Development Initiative merchant platform and the GT Pay service.

On March 9, 2016, he said the representative of his clients, Mr Williams, received several alerts on his mobile telephone in respect of various debits to the account by the bank.

He said the debits totaling about N412,000, included N3,000 at about 7.47 p.m, and N6,000, N100,000 and N200,000, all at about 7.48 p.m.

Again, Mr Irabo said on March 10, 2016 at about 11.03 p.m., a GTBank staff, one Oluwaseun Fatugase, sent an email through the bank’s internet portal titled: “Fraudulent Transfers IRO UNIV AGRIC EMP & DEV INI 0164981107.”

He said by the mail, the fraud desk of Heritage Bank Limited was alerted that transactions supposedly between his clients and one Adebola Olu Ogundeko were fraudulent.

In addition, he said similar notifications were sent to First Bank, Zenith Bank, Diamond Bank, Access Bank and Sterling Bank where his clients also has accounts.

On January 14, 2016, Mr Irabo said GTBank proceeded to “wipe out” about $3,123.16 from his clients’ Dollar Account also with the Bank and tagged it “fraudulent transaction.”

Similarly, he said on April 20, 2016, about N4,242,259.59 in his clients’ account were also wiped out.

Apart from the above, the lawyer said GTBank also refused to honour two cheques issued by his clients in favour of different persons without due explanation.

After his clients waited without a retraction of the suspicious emails by GTBank, Mr Irabo said his clients instructed him to write to the bank on March 29, 2016 to formally demand immediate reversal of debits as well as a retraction of the email correspondences.

Following the bank’s refusal to offer any explanation to the transactions, the lawyer said a court process was filed on behalf of his clients to declare, among other things, that the lien placed on their account unwarranted, unlawful and a breach of the bank’s relationship with them.

M Irabo said his clients also demanded the court to lift the lien on their accounts, refund the N412,000, $3,123.16, N4,242,259.59 debited from the accounts and direct GTBank to publish a retraction in respect of the defamatory and libelous publications against them.

Other demands included general damages of N1 billion for defamation, libellous publication and breach of banker-customer relationship by GTBank.

In his counter-claims filed in its statement of claims, GTBank, through its counsel, Ogunmuyiwa Balogun, admitted all the allegations against his client.

Mr Balogun, however, faulted the suit by Mr Williams against GTBank, saying there was no evidence to show that he has any contractual relationship with his client.

He said that in as much as Mr Williams was the “initiator” or “facilitator” of UNAEDI, his role was at best that of an agent, which has no right to sue the bank.

The counsel said his client’s actions were based on the suspicion that some of the transactions on the account were ‘fraudulent transactions’.

In his reaction, the president of UNAEDI, Austin Ighodaro, expressed delight over the court’s judgement, saying the organisation’s activities involved primarily the receipt of donations through its account domiciled with GTbank for humanitarian services.

Stop using your 'Excellency' for me, simply call me 'Mr Governor'- Sanwo Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially dropped the title, ‘Your Excellency’ , saying he should now be addressed simply as ‘Mr. Governor.’

He revealed this on social media through a statement. Read his short statement below...

''Good evening Lagos. Your Excellency is a nice title that has been used to signify authority, position in government, authoritarian disposition, executive arrogance, and a demi-god mystique. Today, I wish to drop the title and to embrace a more representative one; Mr. Governor.

''In the last five months that I have been privileged to exercise the mandate freely given to me by the great and hardworking people of Lagos State, it has come to my consciousness to review certain features of citizen-government relations.

''These features impede the genuine expression of the democratic spirit of our society and the meaningful exercise of the sovereignty of our people. The office of the Governor has been celebrated as the paragon of excellence, a temple of perfection and a throne of purity.

''This demi-god mystique spreads over the entire machinery of the executive arm of the government, symbolising an authoritarian disposition on the governed. It has deformed the orientation of the elected and appointed persons who are paid from the taxes of the people.

''Elected and appointed persons now see themselves as oppressors who can do no wrong and must be served, rather than serve the people. Whatever might have been the reason for this myth, let us be honest, the office is occupied by a mortal who has been called upon to serve.

''Not just to serve, but with humility and sincerity. The office of the Governor is a public trust that calls for sacrifice, modesty and willingness to add value to the lives of the people.

''Fellow Lagosians, as I embrace the name Mr. Governor, I have come to the conclusion that for us to change the narrative of governance, we have to strip down this seeming symbol of executive arrogance that commands popular obeisance.''

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth unfollow each other on IG

Their split is Instagram official.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth appear to have unfollowed each other on the photo-sharing platform, though it’s unclear who made the first move or when they decided to cut social media ties.

Cyrus, 26, has been packing on the PDA with boyfriend Cody Simpson, so perhaps Hemsworth, 29, didn’t want to see his estranged wife moving on with someone else.

Not all is lost between the two, however, as the Slide Away songstress still follows her ex’s brother Chris Hemsworth and Liam still follows Miley’s family, including her sister Noah Cyrus and dad Billy Ray Cyrus. Neither has deleted the photos they have with each other off of their grids.

The stars announced their split in August after less than a year of marriage. Cyrus then entered a brief relationship with Brody Jenner’s ex-Kaitlynn Carter before starting to date Simpson.

Hemsworth also has moved on, having gone on some dates with Dynasty’s Maddison Brown.
