My mum was a witch – Charly Boy

There have been some revelations about Margaret Ntianu Oputa, the mother to Charly Boy, who died at age 101 in October 2019.

In this interview with the Sunonline, the singer opens up on the life and times of Madam Oputa, including his regrets and plans for the burial among other issues.

What was your first reaction when you heard that your mum had passed on?

I was mad, upset; I cursed her a little in my mind! I felt she chickened out because we had a discussion about death a couple of times. Sometimes she would say ‘oh, I want to go, I want to go’ and I would say ‘go where?’ I would pretend I didn’t know what she was saying and ask ‘okay, you want to go back to the village?’ She would lament: ‘Look at me, nothing is left of me, I want to go’. Then I would reply, ‘you want to go and leave me here? ‘You can’t dump me with all the things I am fighting. You have to stay so you can be giving me ammunition’ and then she would smile. I once posted a social media message where I prayed ‘I am not God, I don’t know the time but I wish mum could die in my arms’. That was the picture I had.


What was your first reaction?

My wife called me to say mum was breathing funny. Then I was in the Philippines on my way from New Zealand. I had spoken to her a day before and she asked when I was coming back. I said the next day, so she said ‘buy me this and buy me that’. When my wife called me the next day, I thought she was trying to trick me. I just broke down and cried but I had to pull myself together and start calling people. I called my wife and asked, ‘is she dead? I can deal with it’. But she said ‘no she is not. Come back you will meet her’. Two hours after that conversation, she passed on. I have done my grieving and I don’t know whether there is still more to do because I haven’t buried her. I am not going to play macho and say I am a man, I won’t cry. If e hungry me I go cry.

Ever since she passed, have you seen her in your dreams?

I have séances (a meeting at which people attempt to make contact with the dead, especially through the agency of a medium). I don’t know if you are aware of my virgins. I have people who help me to locate dead people. I had two virgins around at my dad’s burial and most of the stuff that happened was as a result of communication with my father. When I talk about virgins, I am not talking about it in the physical sense, but the purity of the heart. My virgins are people who God has blessed with one gift or the other, but they are very few. It takes one to know one. So, unless you know, you will never know.

When is the burial?

December 28. I realized that when you get to that age, you desire death because wetin you wan do again? And that was why she was always saying she wanted to go. They always know they are ready for it and I think mum didn’t want me to see her dying. Somehow, I felt she tricked me because we had this conversation a lot of times and I told her ‘you are not going anywhere until I do all I want to do for you’.

Can you share some of the greatest moments you had with her?

My mother is a witch

A witch? Which coven did she belong to?

No, she was a good witch (laughter). And how do I define a good witch? It’s somebody who through intuition knows when things are about to happen. They are futuristic. You can’t be the mother to Charly Boy who stayed in the womb for 11 months and you were able to turn him into a man without being a Madonna. So, when I say my mother is a witch, this is what I mean. And she loved publicity even at the age of 101; nobody liked publicity more than my mum. Mum was a drama queen. Sometimes, she came to watch me gym after which she sat down and talked, and we yabbed ourselves. I noticed mum liked me doing videos and posting. She always asked ‘have you posted that thing? Bring it, let me see. Where are the comments?’ She wanted to read and that blew her mind! I read her the comments and she would then run.

Toyota to recall 679 defective cars in China

Japanese automaker Toyota will begin recalling 679 imported Lexus cars from November 16, due to defective pneumatic rods, according to China’s market regulator.

Filed by Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., the recall will involve Lexus CT200h models manufactured between Jan. 30 and March 12, 2019, the State Administration of Market Regulation said in a statement.

Due to defective electroplating process by suppliers, the surface of the pneumatic rods on the vehicles might fracture, which will pose safety risks, said the administration.

The company will check the serial number of the pneumatic rods and replace the defective parts free of charge.

Federal Government supports response to increase in yello fever cases in Kastina, Bauchi, Benue

This is a press statement...

Between the 1st of August to 5th of November 2019, Nigeria has experienced an upsurge in cases of yellow fever with 511 suspected cases in three states- 309 from Katsina, 162 from Bauchi, and 40 from Benue. Of the samples tested from these cases, 83 were confirmed positive in Katsina (43), Bauchi (34) and Benue (6).

Since the beginning of the year, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) have been working with development partners to support the states to prevent and reduce the number of cases and deaths.


This year, Katsina State has recorded 599 suspected cases, 43 confirmed cases and 77 deaths among suspected cases. A mass vaccination campaign was carried out in the State in September 2019.

Bauchi State has been reporting suspected cases of yellow fever mostly in Alkaleri LGA. This year, the State has recorded 183 suspected cases, 34 confirmed cases and 24 deaths among suspected cases. Following the outbreak in Alkaleri LGA, a reactive vaccination campaign was carried out. Benue State has recorded 150 suspected cases, six confirmed cases and no death in 2019. Vaccination campaigns have been carried out in three LGAs of the state this year- Vandekiya LGA in January 2019, Oju and Ado LGAs in September 2019.

In response to the increase in cases, a multi-agency yellow fever Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) was activated on the 5th of November 2019. Three Rapid Response Team (RRTs) have been deployed to Katsina, Bauchi and Benue this week to support the outbreak response.

Working together, NPHCDA, NCDC and development partners recently implemented yellow fever mass vaccination campaigns in Alkaleri LGA of Bauchi, two LGAs of Benue (Oju and Ado) and all the LGAs in Katsina. All the campaigns were implemented between September and October 2019. In total, yellow fever vaccination campaigns have been implemented in 13 of the 36 statesin Nigeria and in the FCT. 

Since the re-emergence of yellow fever in Nigeria in 2017, NCDC, NPHCDA and the National Arbovirus and Vector Research Centre (NAVRC) have been working together to support states to investigate each case and respond to outbreaks.

Yellow fever virus is spread through bite of an infected mosquito. There is no human-to-human transmission of the virus.  Yellow fever is a completely vaccine-preventable disease and a single shot of the yellow fever vaccine protects for a lifetime. In Nigeria, vaccination against yellow fever is primarily through the routine childhood immunisation. Where necessary, catch up campaigns are carried out to increase population immunity. The yellow fever vaccine is available for free in all primary healthcare centres in Nigeria as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule. We encourage every family to ensure that children receive all their childhood vaccines.

In addition to the vaccine, the public is advised to keep their environment clean and free of stagnant water to discourage the breeding of mosquitoes and ensure the consistent use of insecticide treated mosquito nets, screens on windows and doors to prevent access for mosquitoes. Especially, hikers, park visitors and people engaged with activities in the wild are encouraged to be vaccinated against yellow fever. It is important to avoid self-medication; visit a health facility immediately if you feel ill.
Healthcare workers and members of the public are reminded that the symptoms of yellow fever include yellowness of the eyes, sudden fever, headache and body pain. If you have these symptoms or notice someone in your community displaying them, please contact your nearest primary healthcare centre.

EFCC operatives told me Tuface, Terry G cooperated when they were arrested - Danlil

An up-and-coming singer simply identified as Danlil has alleged that some men who claimed to be operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission harassed and extorted him and a female colleague recently in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The singer who made the claims on his Instagram page said the men were about five.

Narrating what transpired to Saturday Beats, Danlil said, “It happened on Monday afternoon but I didn’t have the opportunity to take photos or videos. They took us to an uncompleted building in Ikeja and we were there for hours. They said they would destroy my career if I didn’t play along. They said they had arrested Terry G and 2baba before and both artistes ‘cooperated’.’’

“We refused a phone check. But at a point, my colleague had to give up her phone for them to check. They then saw an app on her phone and said it was for dating, that we were suspects. I showed them my music videos and social media pages (but they didn’t budge). They collected N200, 000 from my colleague, which was all she had. I am still in shock and found what happened hard to believe.”

Policeman who arrested El Chapo's son shot 155 times in brutal execution

An elite police officer who helped arrest the son of El Chapo was shot 155 times in a brutal car park execution.

The 30-year-old officer, identified only as Eduardo, is reported to have been killed outside a shopping centre in the city of Culiacan.

He had helped detain Ovidio Guzman, El Chapo's son, last month.

He was promptly released. According to local media, the victim was a member of the operation launched by the Culiacan authorities to arrest El Chapo’s son and extradite him to the United States.


Reports said that Guzman was detained on October 17 during a confrontation between the police and supporters of the Sinaloa Cartel in the city of Culiacan.

Alleged gang members loyal to Guzman then caused chaos on the streets and El Chapo’s 28-year-old son was promptly released by the authorities, according to local media.

The footage shows the moment a red car follows a white car into the car park before at least two gunmen reportedly shoot the cop 155 times.

Reports said the victim became a National Police officer in 2013 and last held a position in the security outfit for the undersecretary of public security Carlos Alberto Hernandez Leyva.

Day robbers told me to sing after robbing me- Banky W

Singer and filmmaker, Bankole Wellington, aka Banky W, has shared a story of his experience with some armed robbers on Lagos Island who asked him to entertain them after robbing him.

He spoke at ‘Monday Night Live’, a programme hosted by a Gospel artiste, Tim Godfrey.

He said, “I recall that after a certain December 31 night ‘crossover’ service, I was on my way to the island after dropping a friend. On getting to where my friends were, I stopped and alighted. The next thing I felt was a slap at my face. Lo and behold, I saw four armed robbers. I opted to give them the key of my rickety car.


They slapped me again, saying, ‘Who wants your car’? They told me to move to the back seat of the car while they used my car to rob others. They took my money, jewellery, phone and cap.”

Continuing, he stated, “At one point, one of the armed robbers told the others, ‘Let us take him to Ajah and kill him.’ I started begging them not to kill me.  I told them I am a singer. They then asked me to tell them the songs I had recorded. When I mentioned ‘Ebute Metta’ ‘Capable’ and others, the robbers expressed surprise saying, ‘So you are Mr Capable? Sing for us.’ That was the scariest free show I ever did in my life. I had to sing to armed robbers.”

He also spoke about a side of his life people hardly know.

Wellington, who contested to represent Eti-Osa Federal Constituency at the National Assembly early in the year, said, “There was a time I almost joined the army because I was broke and wanted a pay cheque. Which job haven’t I done? I have sold knives and clothes. Every holiday, I used to take any job that gave me a room on campus because I didn’t want to return to my uncle’s house.

“I returned to Nigeria to pursue my passion for music. In the entertainment business, fame comes before fortune. The problem was that all the money I saved from my engineering job, I spent on recording and promoting my songs. At that point, I was living in the attic of my manager’s house. It got so bad that I was borrowing N5, 000 from him to buy airtime and fuel for my car. I struggled to a point that I started doubting my music talent.”

Presidency confirms sack of some Osinbajo’s aides

The presidency has released the statement below confirming that some aides of the vice president have been relieved of their position.

President Muhammadu Buahri’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said in the statement that some “political appointments have either been revoked or not renewed in the Second Term.”

“The exercise, which has been ordered by the President, is to streamline decision-making, cut down multiple authorities and reduce the cost of administration,” he said.

He said some aides of the president were also affected in the exercise which commenced after the re-election of the president.


Mr Shehu did not, however, give the number of aides affected by the sack.

“In the light of this, the Presidency wishes to strongly deny rumours of a rift between President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo,” the spokesperson said.

Sanwo-Olu presents massive N1.168t budget for 2020

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday presented a budget of N1.168 trillion to the Lagos State House of Assembly for approval for the 2020 fiscal year.

The proposed budget is to be funded by a projected Total Revenue of N1.071 trillion and a deficit amounting to N97.53 billion.

The budget size is higher than the 2019 budget by 34%. Capital Expenditure amounts to N723.75 billion while the Recurrent Expenditure is N444.81 billion, giving a 62:38 capital to recurrent ratio.

According to Sanwo-Olu, “This, in our view, is strong for development. We have placed an increased focus on wealth creation where we will take deliberate steps in courting a partnership between our people and various development institutions.

Kanye West says he wants to run for president in 2024

Kanye West has announced his plans to run for president in 2024  but before potentially moving into the White House the rapper might change his name.

Speaking at Fast Company’s Innovation Festival, West, 42, was joined on stage by his Yeezy collaborator Steven Smith.

“When people say it’s crass to call yourself a billionaire, I say I might legally change my name to Christian Genius Billionaire Kanye West for a year until y’all understand exactly what it is,” he said. “It will be on the license plate.”

That’s when West shifted the conversation to his plan to run for president.


“When I run for president in 2024 —” West said, to laughter from the audience. “What y’all laughing at?”

West said that if he were elected president, he would “create so many jobs.”

“I’m not going to run, I’m going to walk,” he said. “What they’re saying is Kanye’s crazy — one and three African Americans are in jail and all the celebrities are in jail also because they can’t say nothing because they’re so scared.”

West also said he believes African American voters are treated as a “demographic” alone, something he said he has experienced as an African American fashion designer.

US court jails Nigerian Victor Alonge for romance scam

Olu Victor Alonge, charged along with six other Nigerians with a multi-year wire fraud scheme, has been sentenced to a 10-year imprisonment by a court in Georgia, United States.

He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Timothy C. Batten, Sr., on October 30, 2019 and ordered to pay $1,835,279.00 in victim restitution, according to a statement by the Department of Justice
U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Georgia.

Thirty-five year-old Alonge, known also as Serge Damessi, Didier Baraze, Mobo Marcus Adeh, Ayo Baraze and Nicolas Soglo had pleaded guilty to an online dating website scheme.


Three other Nigerians have also pleaded guilty to the 60 counts of wire fraud, money laundering, identify theft and the use of false passports.

“The conspirators in these cases, including some who were overseas, used fake personas on online dating websites to trick individuals, including elderly retirees, into giving them large amounts of money,” the statement said.

The conspirators spent weeks building online relationships with victims before taking hundreds of thousands of dollars, often from retirement savings or inheritances.

Alonge and the others created fake online dating profiles using photos of men and women that were sometimes public figures like government officials or models and targeted the elderly, Pak said.

“These conspirators often targeted vulnerable individuals who possessed financial assets and in some cases spent months cultivating romantic relationships with them through online messaging, text messaging, and voice calls”, US Attorney’s office said.

There were a total of eight victims, who lost $610,319, $418,697, $388,900, $260,000 and $148,800, respectively.

The other Nigerians involved in the scam are Ugochukwu Lazarus Onebunne, a/k/a Policap Tizhe, Saheed Ademoha, 41, of Douglasville, Georgia, Olajide Olalekan Adara, a/k/a Kelvin Mensah, 33, of Loganville, Georgia, Joshua Adedeji Ipoade, 28, of Atlanta, Georgia and Oladunni Temitope Oladipupo, 24, of Lynn, Massachusetts.


Onebunne and Adara have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. Ipoade and Oladipupo are awaiting trial dates.

Two other defendants are fugitives and their identities remain sealed

Alonge, Onebunne, Ipoade and Adara will face immigration removal proceedings after the completion of their criminal cases if convicted, the release said.
