17 year-old violinist was found hanged in the bathroom of her Russian banker father's £9m west London mansion

A gifted teenage violinist was found hanged at her father's mansion just eight days after she performed at the Royal Opera House, an inquest has heard.

Katya Tsukanova, the 17-year-old daughter of Russian banker Igor Tsukanov, was found dead at her £9m home in west London on June 18 this year.

An inquest today heard that Katya, who was a student at the £12,600-a-term Wycombe Abbey boarding school in Buckinghamshire, had previously told a psychologist she was struggling to cope with GCSE exam stress, but was on a gap year before starting her A-Levels when she died.

Her father initially believed a cocktail of drugs, known as a 'Calvin Klein', may have contributed to her death, but the inquest heard she had alcohol but no drugs in her system. She died from fatal compression to the neck.

Westminster Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliff ruled that she had died by 'misadventure' and had not intended to kill herself.

Katya had trained at the Royal College of Music and had been named best young musician of the year at last year's Suoni dal Golfo festival in Italy.

Her therapist, Tanya Lecchi, told the inquest: 'When she was low her motivation was affected and became pre-occupied with negative and self doubting thoughts.

'She said she sometimes thought that she did not want to live anymore but didn't want to kill herself.

'She described some hopelessness and some helplessness at times. She described low moods, particularly during her mock exams.'

Tourist plunges 260ft to his death while trying to snap waterfall selfie

A holidaymaker slipped and fell to his death while trying to take a selfie at a beauty spot where he allegedly ignored warning signs.

Bastien Palmier, 30, and a friend were visiting a 260ft high waterfall on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand when he tragically died on Thursday morning.

The friend said the French tourist ignored warning signs and clambered over a rope to venture onto the edge of the Na Mueang 2 waterfall, the same place where a Spanish holidaymaker died after posing for photos in July.

Mr Palmier was standing near the waterfall's cliff edge while taking a selfie or trying to get into position for a selfie when he slipped and fell to his death onto sharp, wet rocks and into the pool below.

Police and rescue workers retrieved the tourist's body, which was floating face down in the water.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering gruesome injuries in the fall.

Mr Palmier's pal, Thomas Mechin, told police he had invited his "childhood friend" on a dream holiday to see him at his new home in Thailand.

Police said that retrieving the body was made more difficult by the slippery rocks, but after three hours the rescuers were finally able to carry him out of the waterfall by tying him to a stretcher, which was dragged up with ropes.

Police Liutenant Colonel Phuwadol Wiriyawarangkul said: "Tourists should not enter the prohibited area, as the park officers have closed it off for the safety of visitors.

'My fellow police officer r.a.p.e.d my nine-year-old daughter'

A 45-year-old policewoman (name withheld) on Thursday narrated to an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court how a fellow Police officer, Mohammed Alidu, allegedly defiled her nine-year-old daughter in a Police barracks.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the policewoman was the second Prosecution Witness (PW2) in the trial of Alidu, a Police sergeant, for defilement.

The PW2 was led in evidence by the Deputy-Director, Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Akin George.

She said the defendant accosted her daughter (name withheld) on her way home from school, dragged her into his apartment and defiled her.

“We live at Makinde Barracks, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos.

“On June 29, 2018, I was at work when my husband, who was out of Lagos, called me to inform me that Sgt. Mohammed had defiled our daughter.

“I went to the Police station which is within the same compound of the barracks, and my daughter was in the Police station.

“My daughter told me that when she was coming back from school, Mohammed called her but she ignored him.

“She said he forcefully took her to his apartment, put her on a bed, tore her underwear and defiled her,” she said.

According to her, Mohammed was also at the Police station, begging and telling the divisional Police officer that it was the work of the devil.

The policewoman said her daughter was taken to the Mirabel Centre (a sexual assault referral centre) for medical examination, and doctors confirmed that she had been defiled.

During cross-examination by defence counsel, Mr. Sunday Odise, the policewoman told the court that the defendant lived near her residence.

“He did not have a house within the barracks. He was sleeping in a shop opposite our home,” she said.

Electoral process has failed in Nigeria – Jega

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega has decried the failure of the electoral process to entrench good governance in Africa.

Jega stated this on Thursday at the University of Ibadan, UI, while delivering 2019 Convocation Lecture titled, “Towards Credible Electoral Process and Sustainable Political Systems in Nigeria: What role for Universities”.

He said, “All over Africa, and indeed, to some extent, throughout the developing world, the electoral process is failing to entrench good governance and stable and sustainable democratic political systems as a result of what can be termed as a deficit of electoral integrity”.

According to him, deeply embedded unwholesome practices, such as use of money, violence, incumbency powers, and a range of electoral malpractices and fraudulent activities in the electoral process grossly undermine its utility as a vehicle for liberal democratic development.

He revealed that dominant political classes can, and often do, hijack the electoral process through various means, to access power for selfish and self-serving objectives, rather than for democratic development that would satisfy the needs and aspirations of majority of the citizens in the country.

“In virtually all cases, ritualized elections, which lack integrity merely serve to legalize, if not ‘legitimize’, access and control of power into executive or legislative arms of government by people unconcerned with, or indifferent to, the requirements of sustainable democratic development. Hence, such elections do not catalyze, nor guarantee responsive and responsible representation and/or governance”, he said.
