Trump honours hero dog that helped corner ISIS chief

Donald Trump saluted the hero dog which helped corner ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - but the pooch appeared to prefer Vice President Mike Pence.

Conan, the military working dog, was given a medal for his heroics in capturing the terror leader .

"This is the ultimate fighter.  Ultimate everything," Trump said at a special ceremony at the White House.

"It's incredible, the sense of smell, or whatever it may be,' Trump said of service dogs' talent.

"They were going to put a muzzle on the dog and I thought that was a good idea, but then it gets even more violent.

"Conan is a tough cookie. No one is going to mess with Conan."

Despite the praise, Conan solicited pats from Mr Pence in the background. The politician repeatedly stroked the dog outside the White House as Mr Trump, 73, gushed at some length.

Conan was hurt when he helped run down the ISIS chief. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi eventually blew himself up in the raid last month.

Paying tribute to the cute Belgian Malinois, Mr Pence himself said: "Conan is really a hero."

He too praised the canine.

Last month, the US President tweeted his praise for the military dog.

"AMERICAN HERO," the world leader wrote.

The dog has worked with special operations forces for four years and taken part in about 50 missions.

Dad jailed for life for raping daughter after cleaner found evidence under bed

A 45-year-old man has been jailed for life for raping his daughter after a cleaner discovered evidence of the barbaric act under her bed.

The father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, abused the 14-year-old in Ackerville, South Africa.

The victim revealed she had been r.a.p.e.d after a domestic worker found scraps of toilet paper and a blood-stained white cloth beneath her bed.

A National Prosecuting Authority Mpumalanga spokesman said: "She suspected that there was something wrong. She asked the victim in the presence of a neighbour after she came back from school - and she told her that her father r.a.p.e.d her."

Witbank Regional Court heard that the father was supposed to be looking after his daughter after her mum died.

He was arrested over the r.a.p.e and pleaded not guilty, however a medical report showed the victim had suffered injuries to her private parts.

Prosecutors said the defendant did not show any remorse for his actions, according to Times Live.

The court sentenced him to life last Thursday, in the same week that another man was jailed for raping his 15-year-old daughter in South Africa.

The rapist, from Limpopo, set upon the girl after picking her up from her grandfather's home.

He targeted her while they were walking home, with his daughter later telling her sister about the horrific crime.

Prosecutors said the dad abused his position of trust as a parent.

He pleaded not guilty, although he was convicted thanks to DNA and other evidence.

Mankweng regional court handed him a life sentence for the crime.

Six dead, scores injured as 6.4-magnitude earthquake hits Albania like never before (photos)

At least six people are dead and dozens are hurt as the biggest earthquake to hit Albania in decades levelled buildings, trapping people in the rubble and sparking panic among residents.

Desperate battles are underway this morning to rescue victims from piles of rubble left by the 6.4-magnitude quake, which struck at 3:54am local time.

The epicenter was around 20 miles west of the heavily populated capital city of Tirana, between the coastal town of Durres and the city of Thumane, both of which suffered severe damage.

One man in his fifties died after jumping from a collapsing building in Kurbin, while the bodies of a man and woman were removed from rubble in Thumane and a fourth body was found in Durres. At least two others are dead and 300 people have been treated for injuries.

The tremors were felt across hundreds of miles of eastern Europe, sending residents rushing from shaking buildings with some holding babies in their arms, witnesses said.

Adams Oshiomhole urges APC Governors to implement N30,000 minimum wage

National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on governors on the party’s platform to implement the N30,000 minimum wage and the consequential adjustments.

Oshiomhole made the plea on Monday in Jos at the Federal Government-Progressives Governors Forum parley in Jos, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said, “As progressives, let us be the first to pay the new national minimum wage and not just the wage but also the consequential adjustments arising from it.

"Already, there are some proactive progressive governors that have taken steps to address this.

“I plead that you give this a priority because when other governors are fighting whether or not to pay, you will say that progressive governors have paid.

“Where there is will, there will certainly be a way.”

Jeffrey Epstein 'victim's' sister wants FBI to extradite Prince Andrew to the US

The sister of one of Jeffrey Epstein’s “victims” wants the FBI to extradite Prince Andrew to the States and grill him about the billionaire’s abuse of young girls.

Selby Patrick, whose twin Skye died of a heroin overdose aged 29 after being sucked into Epstein’s sick world, begged the royal to share everything he knows about the scandal.

She said: “The Queen may have stripped you of your duties but no one can take away the only duty you have left – that you must tell the truth in the name of
my sister and each and every victim.

“No one believes you could not have seen something. Please tell the FBI everything you know.”
She said if the Prince would not come back willingly, he should be extradited.

Another of the late billionaire’s alleged victims, known as a ‘Jane Doe’ in court and currently suing his estate, joined her call for father-of-two Andrew to be brought to the States for questioning.

She told the Mirror: “They should haul him back. If he has nothing to hide, then he’ll have no problem coming back.”

Both ‘Jane Doe’ and Selby say they watched Andrew’s BBC Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in “disbelief”.
Selby, whose sister was allegedly abused by Epstein from the age of 16, said: “It was offensive to watch his pathetic denials, his undermining of the victims and his lack of empathy.”

The mum of two said she was particularly angered by Andrew’s admission of an ongoing friendship with Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of disgraced newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell.

Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was loaned out to Andrew for sex on three occasions, said under oath in a 2015 court case that Maxwell “recruited” her.

Maxwell has not been charged with any offence and denies all accusations of wrongdoing. Andrew denies ever meeting Virginia.
A second woman, Johanna Sjoberg, also testified that Prince Andrew engaged in a “sexual act” with her at Epstein’s New York home when she was 21.

Selby said Skye was 16 when she first went to Wall Street financier Epstein’s Florida home, in which he also entertained the Duke. Epstein, found dead in his jail cell in August awaiting trial for underage sex trafficking, offered her a massage and $300 to take off her top.

He then told her to take off her bra, and even tried to rip it off.

Despite her ordeal, Skye returned to his home repeatedly, being handed cash each time.

The money saw her living a chaotic party lifestyle which eventually led to her taking drugs.

Skye and a friend who also visited the house later got $50,000 settlements from Epstein.

But the money left Skye hooked on heroin and she was found dead in a motel in 2017, weeks before turning 30. Her son Jayden was five years old.

Selby said: “Epstein and Ghislaine created a life for her from which she could find no way back.

“No one really knows what role, if any, Andrew played, but he spent a lot of time with Epstein and Ghislaine.

“Two girls have accused him of sexual impropriety, he now needs to come to the States and swear on oath just what he did.”
During the Duke’s decades-long friendship with Epstein, the American, who was 66 when he was found hanged in his cell, is alleged to have abused dozens of girls.

In 2008 he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, a controversially short term, for procuring a minor for prostitution.

Despite the financier’s humiliation, Prince Andrew was photographed visiting him after his release.

Malia Obama is all smiles as she attends the Harvard-Yale football game again with British boyfriend

Malia Obama and her British boyfriend Rory Farquharson attended the Harvard-Yale football game over the weekend -- two years after they were seen kissing at the same Ivy League matchup in November 2017.

The 21-year-old Harvard student and her longtime boyfriend made the trip from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to New Haven, Connecticut, to attend the annual rivalry game that was held at the Yale Bowl on Saturday.

The former first daughter, who is in her junior year, was seen chatting and laughing with Rory and their friends as they made their way into the stadium to see the two archrivals duke it out on the field.

Malia donned a tan ribbed turtleneck and leggings, which she paired with an oversized jean jacket that she wrapped around herself to keep warm.

She topped off her casual fall look with a pair of cozy crew socks that peeked out from her lace-up boots and fingerless gloves.

Her curly hair was pulled half-up with a few tendrils framing her face, and she had a smile on her face while milling around with her friends.

Malia wasn't carrying a handbag or backpack at the time, but she was seen holding what looked like a pack of cigarettes.

X Factor contestant Ariel Burdett dies at 38

X Factor contestant Ariel Burdett has died at the age of 38, it's reported.

A friend says the singer, who appeared on the show in 2008, died earlier this month but a cause of death is yet to be revealed.

Ariel, whose real name is Amy Burdett, had one of the most memorable auditions in the show's history.

As she arrived to present herself to the judges she ripped her label on the floor, saying she was a "human being, not a number".

Ariel also told Cheryl, who was an X Factor judge at the time, she was "stupid" after she got given four nos.

She sported bright blonde dreadlocks and dark black eye makeup in the infamous clip.

Ariel told them she was a "specialist and not a generalist" and worked as a "holistic vocal coach".

Her song was an "academic construction", she claimed.

After failing to make it through to the next round, she told the judges to "shove a bit of metal right up their a**".

She had changed her name to Arabella Starchild after her famous audition.

The friend also posted a picture of Ariel on social media, asking them to get in touch with her brother about funeral arrangements.

Kylie Jenner still sizzles while covered up... as it's revealed Drake has always had a thing for Kylie

It's undeniable: they would make one smoking hot couple.

Kylie Jenner, who dropped a pair of brand new super sexy selfies to her Instagram on Monday, has been linked on and off to Canadian hip hop superstar Drake for some time now, and a source recently leaked some new intel on the couple to Us Weekly.

'Drake has always had a thing for Kylie and it’s mutual,' the insider revealed.

'They hang out here and there and have been more recently than in the past because Kylie is technically single right now and the two of them live so close to each other.'

In October, the pair were spotted getting rather flirty at his 33rd birthday party, and since then he and the 22-year-old self-made cosmetics billionaire have apparently been spending more time together.

On Monday, Jenner posted a pair of scintillating Instagram selfies, in which she's seen wearing a silver Chanel top, and tight leggings that were tailored to resemble trousers and still looked so chic covered up.

IPOB, others fault Onyema’s indictment

The Indigenous People of Biafra on Monday faulted the allegation of fraud levelled against the Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, by the United States’ Department of Justice.

In a statement by the IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group also accused some Nigerians of orchestrating the allegations.

The statement read, “There is an indication that people in Nigeria are behind the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians, particularly Biafra citizens living in South Africa.

“We are aware that Allen Onyema volunteered himself and his Air Peace to evacuate Nigerians and Biafrans stranded in South Africa free of charge.

“The probe of the Air Peace boss, Chief Onyema, who recently conveyed the Igbo and other Nigerians in South Africa free of charge during the xenophobic attack, is suicidal because IPOB must stand for him and it cannot hold.”

Similarly, a group of Igbo professionals, under the aegis of Nzuko Umunna, on Monday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that Onyema was given adequate support to clear his name against charges of money laundering and bank fraud against him.

Onyema, who was indicted by a US grand jury for alleged $20m fraud and money laundering, has vigorously denied the charges, saying, “I am innocent of all charges and the US government will find no dirt on me because I have never conducted business with any illegalities.”

In a statement signed by its Coordinator and Secretary, Joseph Odumuko and Paschal Mbanefo, respectively, Nzuko Umunna said, “The usual pattern of throwing our citizens under the bus whenever they are faced with charges in foreign jurisdictions must be reversed, starting with this case. The Federal Government should activate its much-touted citizen diplomacy, a model that has been elevated to a fine art by the United States itself.”

The group expressed “shock and deep concern” on “the frenzy with which anti-graft agencies have already set up a special panel that has swung into action even on a weekend to fish for evidence to convict a Nigerian citizen,” saying the United States would not go into such frenzy when their citizens were indicted.

It added, “It also tends to give vent to the conspiracy theory making the rounds that this is more of a grand design to liquidate another thriving Igbo business mogul than any attempt at combating alleged fraud. A similar fate was suffered by Messrs Cletus Ibeto, Ifeanyi Ubah, Willie Anumudu and Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson fame, to name a few. This is highly unacceptable in a nascent democracy with a very fragile economy.”

Lending his voice, also against the indictment, a forensic accountant, Prof. Emmanuel Emenyonu, urged Nigerians not to sensationalise the allegation against Onyema, saying the businessman remained innocent until proven otherwise in the court.

In a statement in Lagos on Monday, Emenyonu said it was unfair for the US to be “tossing charges of money laundering, which makes it a low-hanging fruit for sensation-seeking authorities.”

“It is clear that smearing the reputation of an international businessman is cheap. They should concentrate on convincing the court of law on the veracity of their allegations instead of mere smear campaign against an illustrious Nigerian,” Emenyonu said in the statement.

The don said he hoped that “in the coming days the innocence of Onyema would be proven with evidence at the court of law.”

Sowore, Bakare ask court to jail DSS DG

Sahara reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and his co-detainee, Olawale Bakare, have instituted fresh contempt suit against the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi.

They had earlier commenced a similar legal action which they did not follow through, following the refusal of Bichi to obey the order of Justice Taiwo Taiwo for the two men’s release from custody after the 45 days period the judge permitted the DSS to hold them in custody expired.

Both men, who have been held in the custody of the DSS since August 2019, want the Federal High Court in Abuja where they institute the fresh legal action to jail Bichi for being in contempt of court.

They had both on November 15 filed separate human rights enforcement suits seeking N500m damages, each, against Bichi and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, for their refusal to release them.

Our correspondent on Monday saw copies of the contempt suit the applicants had instituted on November 12, 2019, against Bichi, who is the sole defendant in the suit.

Copies of the documents made available to Punch on Monday however showed that the suit was only served on the DSS through one of its officers, Tina James, on Monday, November 25, 2019.

The applicants filed the suit titled, ‘Notice of the consequence of disobedience to court order,’ was instituted on the strength of Order IX and Rule (1-3) of the Judgment (Enforcement) Rules, section 72 of the Sheriff and Civil Process Act, 2004.

It was signed by the Registrar of the court with the court’s stamp dated November 12, 2019.

The application instituted on behalf of the applicants by their team of lawyers led by Mr Femi Falana (SAN), threatened a jail term against Bichi, should he continue to disobey the court order for the release of the two men.

It read in part, “Take notice that unless you obey the directive contained in the order of the Federal High Court of Justice, Abuja, made on November 6, 2019, which ordered you to release the defendants/applicants in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/235/2019 forthwith, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison.

“A copy of the said order of court earlier served on you is hereby annexed for your on-the-spot-reference.

“This court has been informed that even as of today, Tuesday, November 12, 2019, you are yet to comply with the lawful order of the Federal High Court by refusing to release the defendants/applicants namely: Omoyele Stephen Sowore and Olawale Adebayo Bakare (Mandate), in your custody forthwith or you will be guilty of contempt of court.”

Sowore was arrested in Lagos on August 2, while Bakare was nabbed in Osogbo, Osun State on August 5, following the calls for the RevolutionNow protests.

The two men’s lawyers had argued that their clients were detained illegally without a court order till August 8, 2019, when Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court gave the agency the permission to hold them for 45 days.

While still in detention, Sowore and Bakare were charged with treasonable felony and other sundry charges.

Ophthalmologist appeals to Nigerians to donate corneas before they die

Dr Abiola Oyeleye, a Consultant Ophthalmologist, has appealed to Nigerians to imbibe the culture of donating their corneas while still alive for harvesting after death to help blind regain sight.

Oyeleye, the Medical Director of Eye Doctor’s, made the plea at the Investiture Ceremony of Adebimpe Bello, as the President of Anthony Village Emerald Lions Club in Lagos.

The consultant ophthalmologist said that cornea donation was necessary for the preservation and restoration of sight to people with corneal blindness.

He said that one cornea donor could restore sight to two people.

Corneal blindness is a profound decrease in vision or blindness due to diseases of the cornea.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), corneal blindness is the fourth most common cause of blindness globally, accounting for over five per cent of the total blind population.

A cornea transplant often referred to as Keratoplasty or corneal graft is an operation to remove all or part of a damaged cornea and replace it with healthy donor tissue.

Oyeleye said in over 20 years, the Lagos Eye Bank had only obtained two corneal grafts locally, adding that all other grafts used were obtained from Asia.

According to him, corneal transplants is life-saving and life-giving to improve sight, relieve pain and treat severe infection or damage to a living blind person.

He said that one of the hindrances to corneal donation in Nigeria was the myths of reincarnation.

Oyeleye said many people would say that they need their eyes to see when they come back to the world.

Imo to spend N40bn on road reconstruction, rehabilitation

Imo State Government says it has awarded over N40 billion contracts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of dilapidated roads in the state.

The state Gov. Emeka Ihedioha made the disclosure at a media parley in Owerri on Monday.

He said that 25 road contracts had been procured, with the first 19 already finished, while 15 per cent of the mobilisation fee had been paid to the contractors in a procurement he said went through the state Ministry of Works and the Bureau for Public Procurement.

Ihedioha said that he had instructed that signboards for the projects, with names of the contractors and other information, be mounted for public consumption.

He said that a Commission of Inquiry on Contract Review and Forceful Acquisition of Land by the immediate past administration in the state was instituted in response to petitions by aggrieved individuals.

“I picked professionals without a single politician as members of the commission, and I asked them to do the needful without fear or favour.

“I did not set up the committee to witch-hunt anybody,” he said.

Two Catholic priests jailed for more than 80 years for s.e.xually abusing deaf kids

Two Roman Catholic priests were each sentenced to more than 40 years in prison in Argentina for sexually abusing deaf children, a court in the western city of Mendoza ruled Monday.

Argentine priest Horacio Corbacho was sentenced to 45 years in jail, while a 42-year sentence was imposed on Italian Nicola Corradi for the abuse of some 20 children at the Provolo Institute for deaf and hearing-impaired children between 2004 and 2016.

The court said the sentences took into account the aggravating circumstances that the priests were responsible for the children’s wellbeing, as well as the fact that the victims were minors.

The institution’s gardener, Armando Gomez, was also jailed for 18 years for sexual abuse.

Outside the court a group of young people waited for the ruling with banners supporting the victims.

Corbacho, 59, and 83-year-old Corradi had been held in preventive detention since their arrest three years ago on charges of child sex abuse at the school.

Apart from the gardener, several other staff at the school were taken into custody after the allegations of abuse first came to light in 2016, and the institute, 1,000 kilometers west of Buenos Aires, was shut down.

They included a 42-year-old Japanese nun, Kosaka Kumiko, who was arrested later after surrendering to authorities. She was charged with complicity with the two priests.

The trial began on August 5 and heard evidence from 13 victims from the institute during in camera hearings.
