EFCC wants to seize my Ilorin home, says Saraki

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has raised the alarm that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had filed a fresh process in the Federal High Court, Lagos, seeking an  interim order for the forfeiture of his home in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Saraki said this in a statement by his media aide,  Yusuph Olaniyonu.

He said, “Just like the previous one, which  the anti-graft agency made by filing a similar order  in the same court on Saraki’s Ikoyi House, it is a clear abuse of the court process.”


He maintained that the action of the EFCC was contrary to the statement of the nation’s highest ranking judicial officer, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed.

“All binding court orders must be obeyed. Nobody, irrespective of his or her position, will be allowed to toy with court judgments.”

Saraki said he was surprised that the EFCC, “which prides itself as an institution that is built on the rule of law, has decided to ignore the existing order of the Federal High Court, Abuja”

The court,  according to him,  had “restrained the respondents (EFCC) by itself, subordinates, agents, servants, or privies howsoever, from seizing, impounding, taking over, confiscating or otherwise forfeiting the applicant’s (Saraki) right to and peacefully enjoy any of his assets and properties.”

The statement read further,  “Again, instead of the EFCC consolidating its cases by joining the new application with the old one it earlier filed through which the commission got an interim order of forfeiture, which is already being challenged by Dr Saraki at the Federal High Court, Lagos, it decided to proliferate  litigation by filing a fresh matter, all in an attempt to embarrass the former Senate President and ignore an existing order.

“The commission was engaging in this rigmarole in order to ensure it has different cases before different judges against the same person.”

The Port Harcourt’s Zonal of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday arraigned a fake ‘Ibrahim Magu’ who has been using the name of the EFCC boss to harass and blackmail senior officials of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for bribes to ‘kill’ spurious corruption investigations.

Robert Terfa Swem, the fake Magu, was arraigned before Justice M. L Abubakar of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He was arraigned on three- count charges bordering on obtaining by false pretences contrary to Section 8(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

Four doctors commit suicide in Abuja

Between January and June this year, no fewer than four medical doctors, working in Abuja, committed suicide.

Dr Roland Aigbovo, President Association of Resident Doctors, FCT, disclosed this during a campaign against drug abuse, at Wuse Market. He did not give the names of the doctors.

The campaign, part of activities to mark the association’s Health Week was aimed at educating traders and shoppers on the dangers of drug abuse.

He said that many people resort to substance abuse to ease off stress, adding that “people now take refuge in drugs to cover up stress, believing that once someone is high, he or she will forget their problems.


According to him, global burden of mental health disorder is projected to reach 15 per cent by the year 2020.

“This had resulted in suicide, a lot of people had taken their lives as a result of drug abuse.

“You will agree with me that suicide is alien to African culture, we are not used to taking our lives no matter the stress, unfortunately, things are changing.

“The medical profession is not left out of this menace because this year alone, between January and June, close to four doctors took their lives.

“If those that have been trained to provide people with healthcare become patients to the extent of taking their lives, it is a source of huge concern.”

He said that the residents doctors embarked on the campaign to draw government and public attention to mental health issues.

Cambridge University agrees to return bronze cockerel looted from Nigeria in the 19th century

Cambridge University has agreed to return a bronze cockerel looted from Nigeria in the 19th century.

Known as a Benin Bronze, it was snatched by British colonial forces and donated to Jesus College in 1905 by the father of a student.

The college's unprecedented step follows a campaign by students against the 'spoils of war'.

It will be one of the first bronzes to be returned to Nigeria by a major institution since thousands were stolen during an expedition in 1897.


The piece was removed from public view in March 2016 after students protested that it celebrated a 'colonial narrative'.

The college then opened a discussion with the Benin Dialogue Group, a collective of artists and museum representatives who meet to discuss the bronzes.

Jesus College yesterday confirmed the sculpture will be returned home, although no specific date has been named.

It said: 'Following interim recommendations from our legacy of slavery working party, Jesus College has decided that a Benin Bronze statue of a cockerel will be returned, and that we will acknowledge and contextualise Tobias Rustat's role in our history.'

Victor Ehikhamenor, a Nigerian artist and member of the Benin Dialogue Group, told The Guardian: 'No matter how small the gesture may look, it is a huge step toward the realisation of restitution of the works from the Benin Kingdom that were looted by the British.

'I hope other Europeans, especially British institutions, will follow without any excuses or delays.'

Mo Abudu is first African to chair Emmy Awards Gala

Media mogul, Mo Abudu has become the first African to chair the International Emmy Awards Gala. She performed the role at the recently concluded 47th International Emmy Awards in New York City.

In June, The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences had appointed the Chief Executive Officer of EbonyLife Media to chair the gala.

This followed her appointment as the first African director of the Academy, signalling a change in the opportunities opening up for television content producers on the continent.


Sharing the moment on her Instagram page on Wednesday. Abudu wrote @moabudu, “Chairing the International Emmys Gala was such an incredible opportunity for me personally, for EBONYLIFE and for Nigerian TV Producers.

“Now we have our foot in the door which will gradually open wider. Let’s get going with our global stories.”

At the gala, she said, “These partnerships are the first of their kind between Hollywood studios and a Nigerian television company.

Pussycat Dolls announce they are reuniting for a UK tour a decade after their split

The Pussycat Dolls have announced they are embarking on a reunion tour next year 10 years after they revealed they were taking a hiatus to pursue solo careers.

However one member of the band - Melody Thornton - won't be joining them on the road, as it is revealed that they will be touring the UK and Ireland without her.

Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt, Carmit Bachar and Jessica Sutta will perform for the first time as a five piece during Saturday's X Factor: Celebrity.


Their reunion was partly inspired by the Spice Girls successful tour earlier this year, as the women claimed that they felt the series of shows was 'inspiring'.

The tour will kick off in April 2020, more than a decade after they split amid rumours of a rift over Nicole's dominant role in both the recording studio and on stage.

Speaking ahead of the announcement, Ashley said it was 'amazing and inspiring' seeing Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Melanie Chisholm back together, but stopped short of saying the Spice Girls had prompted their reunion.

Nigerian Nnamdi Marcellus Mgbodile charged in US with $6.5m romance scam

Nigerian Nnamdi Marcellus Mgbodile, living in Marietta, Georgia, United States has been arraigned on twenty counts of bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

He was docked on November 19 before the U.S. Magistrate Judge Janet F. King. A federal grand jury indicted Mgbodile on November 6, 2019.

Mgbodile was docked the same day that Air Peace chairman, Allen Onyema was also accused of money laundering and bank fraud by the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Georgia.


One of Mgbodile’s victims, a woman lost $6.5million to him via romance scam, while he failed to pull through a Business E-mail Compromise Scam of $350,000.

“Online romance scams and business email compromise frauds have increasingly become the method of choice for transnational fraudsters targeting U.S. residents and companies,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak, who made the announcement of Mgbodile’s indictment and arraignment on Wednesday in Atlanta.

“In this case, a single victim allegedly lost millions. This is a stark reminder that users of online dating websites should be aware of such scams and exercise extreme caution if asked for money by anyone online or over the phone.”

“This investigation and subsequent indictment demonstrates the commitment the Secret Service and our partners have in aggressively pursuing those who commit online fraud scams,” said Malcolm D. Wiley, Sr., Acting Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, Atlanta Field Office. “This case serves as a reminder to all, particularly during the holiday season, to ensure protocols related to cyber hygiene are observed.”

According to U.S. Attorney Pak, the charges, and other information presented in court: Mgbodile was allegedly involved in two fraudulent schemes, a romance scam that defrauded a Virginia woman out of more than $6.5 million, and a business email compromise (“BEC”) scam in which Mgbodile and others attempted to defraud a Georgia company of nearly $350,000.

27 year-old arrested for ‘kissing’ girl’s private parts

A 27-year-old man from Kayole in Nairobi has been arrested on suspicion of committing an indecent act with a child contrary to section 11 (1) of the Sexual Offences Act.

The suspect, Alphonse Musoni, allegedly “kissed” the 7-year-old girl’s private parts in his house in Kayole Estate on November 9.

Musoni, who pleaded not guilty to the charge on Tuesday, November 26, will remain in custody until a children’s court sets his bond terms, the Makadara Law Courts directed.

Makadara Chief Magistrate, Heston Nyaga, heard that on November 9, the suspect lured the minor into his house as she was heading home from a nearby shop. Musoni, allegedly told the girl that he wanted to show her his young baby, who, at the time, was sleeping in the house.

After the 7-year-old girl got into his house, he allegedly led her to his bedroom, where he asked her to lie on the bed.

The court documents say that Musoni, thereafter, undressed the girl, and “kissed” her private parts.

Shocked, the victim’s parents reported the incident at a Kayole police post, leading to the arrest and subsequent arraignment of Musoni.

While denying the charge of committing an indecent act with a child, Musoni said he “did not know why he had been arrested”.

If found guilty of the offence, Musoni will spend at least ten years in jail, the Sexual Offences Act stipulates.

200-level student arrested for participating in NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps has arrested a 200-level student who allegedly obtained a fake degree certificate and was undergoing the orientation exercise at the Zamfara State camp.

Punch correspondent learnt that the NYSC last Friday apprehended the student, identified only as Rose, who was a 200-level Journalism undergraduate at a university in Benin Republic.

The NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, confirmed the arrest of the student to Punch correspondent.

He said the Benin Republic university wrote to the scheme when its officials discovered her on the social media, posting her photographs in the NYSC uniform in the Zamfara camp.


She was undergoing the Batch C Stream 1 orientation course before she was arrested.

The DG noted that the student had been brought to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and handed over to officials of the Department of State Services for further investigations.

Ibrahim warned that the NYSC would clamp down on fake graduates and certificates, adding that anyone arrested would be handed over for prosecution.

'Why INEC must postpone November 30 Kogi West rerun poll'

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Kogi West senatorial election, Dino Melaye, has called for the postponement of the supplementary election scheduled for November 30.

Melaye made the call while addressing newsmen at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, where he had gone to submit another petition on the election.

He called on INEC to postpone the election until it is able to address what he described as “noticeable infractions” in the November 16 election and concerns over areas where the supplementary election would be held.

Melaye had, on November 20, submitted a petition, calling for total cancellation of the election, attaching 21 video CDs and other “documentary evidence” to prove that there was no election in the senatorial district.


He said he was at INEC office because he had yet to get a reply to his earlier petition, adding that there was also no public announcement that a panel had been set up to investigate the issues raised in the petition.

Melaye said he was also there to submit additional facts to those in his earlier petition, which, according to him, were unknown to the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

“What is new in what we have submitted today is that we have attached a copy of Form EC8B of Ward A in Lokoja Local Government Area, where INEC, during collation, had cancelled results of nine out of 23 polling units in the LGA.”

He added that results were cancelled in other polling units during collation, including Abugi, Ole and other places, but these were not captured among the areas where INEC said that supplementary poll would take place on November 30.

“What we are saying is: how can INEC cancel these polling units during collation process and they will not be captured in places where rerun will take place?

“We believe this is an aberration, and the INEC chairman cannot know about it and allow it to stay.”

Melaye said there were also lots of places where elections were supposed to have been cancelled by INEC, but which were not.

These, he said, included Lokogoma and Adanko in Lokoja, where, he said, three people were killed during the November 16 election.

“Unfortunately, results were returned in those places. We are saying that INEC must be neutral and cancel elections in areas where there was violence.”

Imo Police sergeant kills self over delayed promotion

A Police officer, Paul Joseph, attached to a branch of Access Bank at Ahiara junction, Ahiazu, Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, on Wednesday reportedly committed suicide over alleged delayed promotion.

A source told Punch Correspondent that Joseph, who hailed from Taraba State, was long overdue for promotion to the rank of Inspector but had yet to be promoted by the Police Service Commission.

The incident reportedly happened around 7am.

A source at the bank said, “While staff were resuming for work for the day, they heard gunshot at the security house at the gate.


“Upon enquiry, they discovered that the policeman had killed himself. He shot himself to death.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident and said sergeant’s corpse had been deposited at the morgue.

Ikeokwu said Police had recovered the service rifle which Joseph allegedly used in taking his own life.

He added that Police Commissioner, Rabiu Ladodo, had ordered investigation into the incident.

Pastor allegedly steals church member’s 4-month old baby

A 52-year-old old female pastor, Charity Okpara, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a four-month-old baby girl from her church member.

Okpara, resident of No. 10, Abiodun Kayode St., Araromi Bus Stop, Ojo, in Lagos, was arraigned on four count bordering on conspiracy, unlawful abduction and child trafficking.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, alleged that the defendant stole the four-month-old baby, Princess Oluchi, daughter of one Mrs. Blessing Okon.


Ayorinde told the court that the defendant committed the offences with others still at large on November 5 at No. 5, Kayode St., Ajangbadi in Lagos.

The prosecutor submitted that the defendant “fraudulently took away the baby from her mother.”

“All efforts made to locate the baby proved abortive,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi, admitted the defendant to a bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Osunsanmi ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed, with an evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government and should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

NAN reports that the offence violates Sections 141, 277(1) 277(b) and 411 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State 2015 (revised).

The magistrate adjourned the case until February 24 for substantive hearing.

69 year-old lecturer who demanded s.e.x in order to give good marks jailed (photo)

Samson Mahimbo, a 69-year-old college lecturer from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has been sentenced to three years in jail, with an alternative of Tsh5 million (Ksh220, 000) fine, after he pleaded guilty to demanding s.e.x from his student in order to award her good marks in a supplementary exam.

The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, November 26, at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam.

Delivering the judgement, resident magistrate Huruma Shaidi said sex-for-grades arrangement leads to the churning out of unqualified professionals.


The Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court was told on October 9, that Samson Mahimbo was on January 11, 2017 caught n.a.k.e.d in a lodging facility preparing to engage in sexual intercourse with his student.

Mahimbo’s student was a Second-Year first semester learner at the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Dar es Salaam.

The student had failed her main exam in transport administrations, and was scheduled to re-sit the paper on January 5, 2017, the court was told.

NIT lawyer, Faraja Salamba, told the Kisutu Court on October 9, that Mahimbo abused his powers by soliciting sex from one Victoria in exchange for good marks that he would award the student.

Salamba narrated that on January 11, 2017, the suspect called Victoria on phone and asked to meet her at an entertainment joint known as Shani Bar in Mwenge, North-West of Dar es Salaam.

“When they met, the learner was given the supplementary exam, which she sat for. Mahimbo had carried with him to the date a marking scheme. After ‘sitting the exam’, Mahimbo marked Victoria’s paper and gave her a score of 67 per cent. The two, thereafter, left Shani Bar for a lodging facility known as Camp David within the same area,” the college’s lawyer, Salamba, told the court as quoted by Global Publishers.

Salamba further claimed that the two, while at Camp David, binged on alcohol before booking a room, where Mahimbo was nabbed naked preparing to engage in sexual intercourse with the learner.

“The suspect had begun hugging and caressing the student before attempting to undress her, when they heard a knock on the door. Victoria opened the door and police officers, who had been tipped of the lecturer’s plan, arrested him. His clothes lay on the table at the time,” said Salamba.

The suspect was first arraigned on August 14, 2018.

During a subsequent arraignment in early 2019, Mahimbo denied that he attempted to solicit sexual favours in exchange for good marks, contrary to the anti-graft laws in Tanzania.

The prosecution said it had lined up six witnesses to prove their case against the suspect.

Mahimbo, on the other hand, told the court that he would rely on four witnesses to prove that he was innocent.

However, on November 11 during a subsequent arraignment, the suspect changed tune on his earlier plea, this time around, admitting he demanded sex from his student in exchange for good grades.
