Jealous man ordered his wife to swallow wedding ring before 'murdering her'

A "jealous and violent" man told his estranged wife to swallow her wedding ring before allegedly beating her to death in a "brutal" attack, a court has heard.

Shaun Dyson, 28, is accused of the murder of Lucy-Anne Rushton, 30, in the early hours of June 23 by repeatedly jumping or stamping on her at their home in Andover, Hampshire.

Simon Jones, prosecuting, told Winchester Crown Court that the pair had married in 2010 having eloped to Gretna Green but Ms Rushton became the victim of a "history of domestic violence".

Mr Jones said: "The defendant's and Lucy's relationship is probably best described as toxic.

"Lucy was killed by the defendant; she was the victim of a prolonged and very severe beating, culminating in repeated stamping or jumping or both on her chest and while she was laid on her back."

He continued: "There was no justification for blow after blow, kick after kick, stamp after stamp on Lucy. This was borne out of a jealous rage in a violent man."

Mr Jones said that Dyson, who had already hit Ms Rushton on the evening before she died, had become "enraged" by a phone call she received from a man she had been in a relationship with.

He said that a witness had seen the defendant say to Ms Rushton in the early hours: "Swallow the ring because we are not together any more."

He added that the witness said Ms Rushton had put the ring in her mouth but had not swallowed it because they had seen it on the stairs later, where it was found.

Mr Jones said Ms Rushton had told members of her family in the months before she died that she feared Dyson would murder her.

The prosecutor added: "She was convinced that he was going to do something to her and if he couldn't have her, no-one could."

Mr Jones said that, in February, Ms Rushton had also raised concerns about the defendant and that he "had a bag ready with a change of clothes and weapons".

He said Ms Rushton's mother had also witnessed attacks by Dyson, including over Facetime.

Mr Jones continued: "The fact that Lucy had concerns for her life shortly before she was killed is a significant indication of the state of the relationship and the concern Lucy had of the defendant, who could turn to violence on the most extreme scale with the most extreme consequences."

He added: "It's not disputed the defendant killed Lucy. We say what happened that night was not a momentary loss of control but the culmination of previous episodes of violence that had preceded that night."

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the defendant striking and spitting at Ms Rushton in a hotel corridor in Bournemouth in September 2018.

Dyson, of Andover, Hampshire, denies murder and the trial continues.

Free Lagos-Ibadan train rides record only 6 passengers in two trips

The free train ride between Lagos and Ibadan on the new standard gauge train commenced on Monday, but in two days only six passengers boarded the train in two separate trips.

Transport minister Rotimi Amaechi had declared the free ride on Saturday after a test-run of the train from Iju in Lagos to Ibadan, Oyo state where the 157-kilometer project terminates.

Though the project is yet to be completed, the government commenced operations on the Iju-Ibadan axis where rail tracks have been completed while finishing touches are being put on the stations.

Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria had said two luxury coaches would be deployed on the standard gauge daily, adding that because of the limited space, only about 60 to 80 people will be able to benefit from the free ride on first come, first served basis.

However, for the two days that the service commenced, only six passengers used the free train service, according to Daily Trust.

Two passengers boarded Monday from Lagos around 4 pm while the train arrived Iju on Tuesday with just four passengers, making only six passengers who have so far taken advantage of the free ride.

An NRC official who refused to be named said the Corporation is optimistic that more passengers would turn up before the week runs out.

Take it back movement raises alarm over alleged plans to assassinate Sowore in prison

The Take It Back Movement has raised the alarm over what it describes as plans by the Department of State Services to assassinate pro-democracy campaigner and Publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement on Monday, Director-General of TIB, Joshua Adeoye, said it had information that the government planned to surround Sowore in prison with hardened criminals, who will do the regime's bidding to kill him in exchange for their freedom.

Femi Falana (SAN), who is Sowore's lawyer, on Sunday raised the alarm over a request filed by the DSS at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to transfer Sowore to prison.

Adeoye said, “The ultimate aim of the plan is to have Sowore attacked, assaulted, and poisoned in prison.

“The planned transfer ensures that Sowore will be surrounded by a den of hardened criminals amenable to the government’s bidding while in prison.

“As Sowore would no longer be in the custody of the DSS, the government and the DSS are seeking plausible deniability by blaming “unnamed prisoners” for the planned attack.

“Trusted sources with conscience within the ranks of the government and its security agencies made it known that this plan had been hatched and is now being expedited because all overtures to Sowore to keep quiet about the failures of the Buhari government upon release had failed.

“Our sources also revealed that with all the international attention that had followed Sowore’s illegal abduction and incarceration, the DSS would prefer that the plan not be carried out in their custody.

“This must not be allowed to happen. Nigeria is a democracy and Buhari must not be allowed to silence valuable voices of dissent and accountability, dragging us back to the dark days of his dictatorship.

“The Buhari government must be aware that it will be held responsible for any harm or otherwise that comes to Sowore.”

Lawyer battles Abuja hospital over wife’s demise

An Abuja-based lawyer, who hails from Delta State, Tony Ejumejowo, has dragged the management of Nisa Garki Hospital, Abuja, before the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, Minister of Health and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, accusing doctors and management of the hospital of negligence, which led to the death of his wife, Esther Ejumejowo.

The legal practitioner, in a statement made available to NDV, asked the MDCN to order an investigation into the death of his wife, who he said died October 5 because of gross negligence on the part of doctors and management of the hospital.

According to him, his late wife, a patient in the hospital for the past nine years, had registered in the ante-natal clinic of the hospital where she gave birth to their third child, a baby girl on September 12.

He explained that two days after the death of his wife, he visited the hospital and met with the medical director over the demise of his wife and subsequently requested for the medical report of treatment given to her, commencing from the period she registered for ante-natal until her last visit to the hospital.

Supposed discrepancy

He said: “I attended another meeting with the Medical Director on October 8 in company of the hospital’s consultant cardiologist, who while condoling with me expressed shock at the death of my wife.

He informed me that given the treatment administered to her and his examination of her on September 27, he was shocked she died under the circumstances she did. “In the said meeting on October 8, I was issued a formal medical report by the Medical Director of the hospital.

“My perusal of the said medical report issued by the hospital revealed that the said medical report is replete with falsehoods and half-truths and that the said medical report issued by the hospital does not reflect the true state of the medical history of my wife and the events leading to her delivery and resulting to her death.

“I strongly suspect there is a deliberate attempt to cover up negligence by the doctors and management of the hospital by the management of the hospital.

“I have requested the conduct of an autopsy, as I strongly suspect that the death of my wife was avoidable and was caused by the negligence of the doctors of the Nisa Garki Hospital, Abuja.”

We weren’t negligent in our duty—Dr. Odu, MD

Contacted, the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Adamu Onu, who admitted that the MDCN was already handling the matter, debunked the claims by the husband of the deceased that she died because of negligence on the part of doctors and management of the hospital. He said: “The MDCN is already on the matter. Our policy in the hospital is not to comment on patient’s management issue, at least not in this sort of circumstances.

“However, the only thing I will say on this matter is that the hospital fulfilled its duty of care to his wife and treated her and did everything, according to the best ethical principles. But since he has already petitioned the MDCN on this matter, we prefer for the council to do its job.”

Basket Mouth releases statement after being stripped off European Union Ambassadorial role

Comedian, Basket Mouth has reacted to being stripped off as an E ambassador over a 2014 rape joke.

He was one of the few celebrities selected as an ambassador for the European Union in Nigeria’s campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

But shortly after the announcement, there was outrage on social media as many said he wasn't fit for the position. And shortly afterwards, he was stripped of the privilege.

Though he has being quiet, the comedian has now decided to break his silence and react to the outrage. His statement;

"Almost every morning in the blogs, on the news, there’s a picture of a man sitting on the floor pleading, the caption is usually in the line of ‘its the devils handwork’ and the topic is from underage defilement, rape or brutality against a woman or minor. I live in this same world with my most prized possessions my wife, my two daughters, my sisters and women who have built me into the man I am.

I was recently presented an opportunity to create awareness on the efforts of the EU to bring support to fighting this scourge, it was a no-brainer for me. I refused any compensation for it and volunteered to lend my voice because….its our fight, it’s not for the EU…its for my girls’ future.

Unfortunately, a few years ago I shared up a Facebook post that I thought was shedding light through humor to the entitled crude and very present behavioral patterns of some African men who equate spending to sexual favors, but I also realized then that women actually have to face this daily and its harrowing and I deeply apologized for it.

I sincerely pray that this does not take away from the most important fight of our lives….the fight to secure our future…because the girl child is our future. I strongly appreciate the EU for this amazing platform to improve our lot, as long as the message reaches the ears of those who need it, then it’s a win. To every woman – our mothers, sisters, lovers, wives, crowns, supporters, prayer partners, foundation, life…. thank you for being who you are. So many times you sacrifice who you are for a man to become who he wants to be. It’s time we all love and and also support you like you do us….cos in your light, we all shine

Bless."

2 die, as motorcycle slip on collapsed bridge in Osun

Two youngmen, Tunde, 24, and a teenager Samad, early morning on Saturday were involved in an accident which caused them to slip into a river at Omu river in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State.

The bridge on the river, which is the boundary mark between Osogbo, the state capital and Obokun local government had collapsed during a flood that ravaged the community in August this year.

It was gathered that the duo were going to one of the villages to bring their father, who lives in the village to Osogbo for the weekend when the motorcycle slipped on the plank used as a temporary bridge linking the communities with the state capital.

An eye witness, Rafiu Adebisi disclosed that the duo were on the bike crossing the river when the motorcycle slipped, saying they fell into the river while struggling on the plank bridge.

“Tunde usually come to the village to take his father to Osogbo for the weekend and the elderly man returned on Monday, but this Saturday, he was with his cousin, Salad, who was about 16. Their motorcycle slipped on the plank bridge and while struggling to avoid serious injury, the duo fell into the river.

Efforts to rescue them proved abortive as they were brought out of the river dead. The whole operation by the locals took about 20 minutes because the river was deep. The accident in Osun was reported at the Ibokun police station, but no officer came to the scene except the Divisional Police Officer, who came after the bodies have been evacuated by the victim’s relatives.

Sarkodie, John Dumelo should marry more than one wife – Counselor Lutterodt

Controversial marriage counselor, Mr. George Lutterodt has given his unflinching backing to award-winning Stella Seal on her belief that polygamy is very important in many modern marriages.

In a quick chat with Zionfelix on the “Uncut” show, he stated vehemently that polygamy is not a sin in the Christian doctrine and as such, all the pastors and churches who deny women, who are second wives the chance to have communion, will rot in hell.

The outspoken counselor also stated that rich and influential men like musician Sarkodie, and actor cum politician John Dumelo, need not marry just one because they have the financial capability to marry two or more and still have a very stable home.

Counselor Lutterodt ended by advising other rich men in Ghana to go ahead and marry more wives because they are many single ladies, especially female celebrities out there who deserve to have husbands.

Sex for favours no big deal — Ghanaian singer Meesha

When the BBC documentary on sex for grades at universities across Africa, including the University of Ghana broke, it might have sparked outrage but not many people were surprised because the practice seems to be pervasive in all spheres of society.

The matter came up for discussion on entertainment shows and while there was consensus that it had become normal in the industry, there was concern also about how to get it stopped because it was a disturbing issue but for now, entrant onto the music scene, Meesha, says sex for favours is not a big deal.

According to her, there was nothing wrong with people using what they had to get what they wanted.

“I don’t find anything wrong with people using what they have to get what they want, once they are okay with it and feel what is in it is worth going for.

“In the music industry, it is there, just as it is in every sector but I will not be an advocate to kick against it.

“It is normal, I mean sometimes if you compare the guy you willingly give yourself to who will end up breaking your heart or cheat on you to the other one that has something tangible to give you, you may want to go for the latter and that is fine by me,” she told Graphic Showbiz recently.

When asked if she had done or would engage in sex for favours, Meesha said no.

“I will not do but I won’t kick against it either. Fortunately for me, I have the right people around me so I have not faced that yet and I don’t think I will.

“I have followed such stories keenly and my answer has always been that the ladies who do it should be left alone, it’s their decision and choice and it should be respected,” she said.
