POS stamp duty: ‘You are rubbishing cashless policy’ – Women group tells Federal Government

Where is the lie? Sigh! The Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC), Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, declared that the introduction of N50 stamp duty on every transaction above N1,000 by the Federal Government is a way of rubbishing the cashless and financial inclusion policies of the government.

Coordinator of WORDOC, Dr. Sharon Omotoso, raised the alarm during a press briefing held at the University of Ibadan.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), had in September 2019, issued a circular that stated that a statutory fee of N50 was added to every transaction over N1,000.


Omotoso, while reacting, insisted that the N50 stamp duty was making life difficult for women entrepreneurs and many people had returned to the use of cash that was earlier discouraged because of risks associated with its usage for business transactions.

She placed three demands before the Federal Government, which include: “review the N50 stamp duty to take effect only on transactions from N50,000.

“The Federal Government should withdraw the instruction with immediate effect, pending when the issue will be resolved. In the spirit of democracy. We seek government’s accountability and transparency on the hitherto deducted N50 stamp duty which would have accrued to millions since the policy took effect.

“Payment channel agents charge this stamp duty in every individual transaction. Nairametrics.com in a recent survey of retail outlets reported that POS machines in certain filling stations now have an upgrade that automatically charges N50 stamp duty, sometimes with the buyer oblivious to this.

“With this development, Nigerians are collectively decrying this stamp duty charge and many are shunning transaction via point of sale, choosing instead to withdraw bulk money from ATM posts. As people are inclined to carry cash now in defiance to the stamp duty, the prior successful cashless policy in Nigeria is gradually degenerating.

“This is added to the fact that arguably half of Nigeria’s population is unbanked. Along with this, PoS charges are triggering a move from grocery stores and supermarkets.”

A recent survey, according to Omotoso, revealed that the number of inactive terminals in Nigeria increased from 43,320 in January to 131,201 by October 2019.

“Nigeria is a low-income country with one of the highest entrepreneurship rates in the world. It also has one of the highest female entrepreneurship rates in the continent, in terms of their agencies and active business engagements.

“With this, however, comes a need to distinguish between high end and low-end female entrepreneurship. High-end entrepreneurship has a structure that conforms to the formal sector. Low-end entrepreneurship is squarely informal,” she said.

Emmanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau, Boris Johnson caught on tape gossiping Donald Trump

Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron and Boris Johnson were caught on a hot mic at the Buckingham Palace NATO reception Tuesday evening, appearing to gossip about Donald Trump and an impromptu lengthy press conference.

In a clip being widely shared online the three world leaders seem to be discussing why the French President was late during the London summit, held to mark the alliance's 70th anniversary. Princess Anne also appears to be in the discussion but it is unclear if or how she responds.

None of the men mention Trump by name but Trudeau seems to be referring to the US president's talks with the media throughout Tuesday.


Trump spoke at length to reporters Tuesday afternoon after an awkward press conference with Emmanuel Macron, following on from an earlier and equally lengthy chat after a sit-down with NATO president Jens Stoltenberg

In the clip, British Prime Minister Johnson asks: 'Is that why you were late?' Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, swigging from his drink, shoots back: 'He was late because he takes a 40 minute press conference off the top.' 

The video then cuts to a later clip, which is without context, where Trudeau adds: 'You just watched his team's jaws drop to the floor.'  He then motions as if his jaw is dropping. It is not known if Trump is the focus of that comment as the video has been edited.

Toor! Prophet wants boxing and wrestling banned in Kenya, goes to court... sues commissioner of sports

A self-proclaimed prophet has moved to court seeking to ban boxing and wrestling sports in Kenya.

‘Prophet’ Mdodoki Kamau, through a certificate of urgency, said boxing is a violent sport that has endangered the lives of Kenyans and cited the case of Conjestina Achieng, who has been battling mental health issues.

Kamau also cited deaths of professional boxers, former world heavyweight champion and one of the world’s greatest fighters, Mohamed Ali, and Kenya’s Robert Wangila, who won a welterweight gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games.


The ‘prophet’ said the duo died from boxing-related illnesses.

The petitioner also cited Article 24 on the right to life, Article 27 on the equality before the law and Article 29 on the right to freedom and security.

Kamau said the application is spiritual and that the two sports are violent in nature and a health hazard.

The preacher sued the Commissioner of Sports, saying the sports tribunal dismissed his appeal citing lack of evidence.

He wants the boxing and wrestling sports to be declared unlawful in Kenya.

He further claims that Section 45 of the Sports Act establishes the position of the Sports Registrar, whose responsibility is registration and regulating sporting activities.

The tribunal, while dismissing his appeal, said participation in sports especially boxing is consensual in nature.

Kamau said the Bible does not condone violent sports, quoting 2 Corinthians and Proverbs 25:2.

Man shoots, kills brother’s wife over mother's property

Police in Thika, Kenya are looking for a man who allegedly shot dead his brother’s wife in unclear circumstances and fled.

Confirming the incident, area criminal investigations officer Husein Bakari said the suspect identified as Charles Mbogo shot the woman after a quarrel at Happy Valley Estate in Thika East on Monday evening.

The DCI officer said the victim is a 25-year-old nurse who worked in Nairobi and a mother of a two-year-old child.

Mr Bakari said initial reports indicate there has been a long-standing family dispute over the house they were living in.


The family of the deceased was living in Ruaka area, Kiambu before moving to their new home in Thika that belonged to her mother-in-law who died about a month ago.

Police are yet to unravel how the suspect, a welder, came into possession of a firearm.

Man found with 100 stolen women panties at his home nearly lynched to death

A 36-year-old man from Hirumbi Village in Lurambi, Kakamega County, Kenya was nearly lynched on Sunday after he was found in possession of 100 stolen women’s panties in his house.

During the rough-up by area residents, the suspect, Mukoshi Chipukosia, was found wearing two of the stolen women’s underwear.

Nyumba Kumi initiative chairperson, Eric Anyanjira, told K24 Digital that they became suspicious of Mukoshi every time he would undress and remain in women’s underwear when bathing in the river.

On Sunday, Mukoshi had allegedly gone to steal underwear from a neighbour’s bathroom, when dogs barked, alerting the owner.


“When I went to check, I found he had pocketed my panties,” said the aggrieved woman.

“There is a woman in my neighbourhood who is lamenting every day that her underwear is being stolen. When women bathe, and leave their panties in the bathroom, he steals them,” said another female resident.

“We are fed up with his habit! What he is doing is not good, at all. He only steals women’s panties, and not men’s underwear. Every time he steals our panties, it leaves us wondering what the thief is up to,” said another victim.

“For the longest time, thieves in this area have been stealing cows, goats and chicken… But now, we have a thief who has perfected the art of stealing women’s underwear. Everything is being stolen now, literally!” said a male resident.

Mukoshi was forced to personally discard the stolen innerwear and vow never to steal any woman’s panty again.

The suspect said poverty forced him to steal women’s underwear.

“I do not have money to buy new men’s underwear. So, stealing was the only option I was left with,” said Mukoshi.

Lagos CP rescues abducted corper, arrests kidnap kingpin

The Lagos State Police Command has rescued a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Faith Onyiwara, who was kidnapped around Ilamija in the Epe area of the state.

Punch Metro gathered that Onyiwara was on her way to attend the community development service meeting when the kidnappers, led by one Moses Ofeye, abducted her.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Tuesday that the kidnappers demanded N50m ransom from the manager of the ABC Farm, where Onyiwara was serving.

He stated that no ransom was paid, adding that a rescue operation coordinated by the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, rescued Onyiwara in a swampy forest in Ilamija Nla in Epe after an exchange of gunfire with the kidnappers.


According to the PPRO, Ofeye, who sustained bullet wounds during the gun battle with the police, was arrested, while the victim was rescued, taken to hospital and handed over to the NYSC coordinator in the state.

 The Lagos State Coordinator of the NYSC and family of the rescued corps member expressed gratitude to the commissioner of police for rescuing their daughter alive.”

Donald and Melania Trump receive royal welcome as Buckingham Palace hosts spectacular reception for Nato summit

Donald and Melania Trump attended a reception at Buckingham Palace earlier this evening hosted by The Queen and also attended by The Duchess of Cambridge.

The US President and First Lady had tea with Prince Charles and Camilla at Clarence House before making their way to Buckingham Palace amid heavy security later on.

The First Lady was wearing a yellow £4,700 Valentino coat to keep the British cold at bay teamed with fuchsia heels, while the president opted for a dark blue suit, white shirt and blue tie. 

Other world leaders at Buckingham Palace at the reception included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife Emine, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was also in attendance. The Queen also wowed in a green dress and accessorised with a emerald green shawl, a pearl necklace and pearl earrings. She seemed in good spirits following rumours from cruel social media trolls who had speculated her death.

Hate Speech Bill impressive – US Embassy official

Political Officer of the Embassy of the United States of America, Jerry Howard, on Tuesday described the Hate Speech bill before the National Assembly as an “impressive” piece of legislation needed to address issues of discrimination, hostility and violence in Nigeria.

Howard stated this during a meeting with the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and sponsor of the Hate Speech Bill, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, at the National Assembly, Abuja.

According to the United States Embassy official, the visit was intended to engage the sponsor of the Hate Speech Bill and to seek an understanding into the proposed legislation under consideration by the Senate.


Following explanations by Senator Sabi Abdullahi on the bill, Mr. Howard described the response of the media as “misleading” and “hysterical” of the contents of the bill and what it actually seeks to achieve.

He, therefore, advised the sponsor of the bill to engage and educate Non-Governmental Organizations and Civil Society Organizations in the country on its proposed contents so as to muster support for the bill.

Speaking on the decision of the US Embassy to engage the National Assembly on the Hate Speech Bill, Howard said, “We want Nigeria to succeed and we think a prerequisite for Nigeria’s success is successful democracy.

“For democracy to succeed, the people must have a house, the people must have a place where their representatives can argue and complain, come up with new ideas and come up with solutions to guide the executive branch and lead the country forward.”
He commended the lawmaker for the level of work and research carried out on the bill.

“I’m very impressed with the research you’ve done on the bill. The media has had a field day with this, really.

“You’ve thought it through. I was depending on the media for my education, and it was very misleading. You’ve done your research and it is very interesting.

“But you have a difficult job selling this to the NGOs, CSOs. You need to talk to them. You’ll need to talk to Civil Society Organizations, you need to educate them. You’ve educated me,” Howard said after Senator Abdullahi explained the contents of the bill.

Earlier, speaking on why he decided to introduce the bill, the lawmaker said, “Part of the reasons why violence takes place is attributable to discriminatory practices.

“It is discrimination that creates the socio-political imbalance that you see leading to a group feeling shortchanged and marginalised.

“Discrimination is also another very serious matter why I sponsored the bill. This bill basically is about preventing discrimination, and prohibiting people who incite violence,” he explained.

Ex-Kwara LG councillor nabbed for car theft

A former councillor in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, Opeyemi Adeojo, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Adeojo was identified as the leader of a car theft syndicate notorious for stealing vehicles from dealers by pretending as genuine buyers.

The EFCC said it had been on the trail of members of the syndicate after a series of petitions against his gang’s criminal activities were treated by the Ibadan zonal office of the commission.

No fewer than three cases of car theft were established against the syndicate, with all the vehicles involved recovered and kept in the commission’s custody in Ibadan.
Investigations revealed that the gang was using similar tricks to dispossess the dealers of their vehicles.


According to the EFCC, Adeojo often pretend to be a medical doctor, adopting different names and institutions as his place of work to appear responsible and create a false sense of confidence to penetrate the victims.

One of the cases involved a Toyota Avensis wagon car, with Adeojo allegedly claiming to be one Dr Gboyega Omojola of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The case was reported to the Ibadan office of the EFCC on March 23, 2019, by Tunde Adejuwon, an Ibadan-based car dealer.

According to the petitioner, ‘Dr Omojola’ had come in company with one Babatunde Oni, his supposed driver, to his car mart to negotiate the price of the car and later agreed to pay N2m for it.

After the agreement, ‘Dr Omojola’ issued a Skye Bank cheque for N2m in favour of the dealer and ordered his ‘driver’ to pay it into his Zenith Bank account at Bodija.

Oni later came with a copy of the deposit teller.

It was later discovered that the payment was not approved as the payer used a cloned cheque for the transaction.

Unfortunately, the decline did not come until after the gang had escaped with the vehicle.

A similar scenario also played out in a petition by one Amos Arole Oloja, also an Ibadan-based car dealer.

Oloja alleged that the duo drove to his car stand in a Honda CRV to price a Toyota Sienna and agreed to pay N2.2m for the vehicle.

This time, Adeojo claimed to be Dr Odumodu, also of the UCH, Ibadan, while his ‘driver’ gave his name as Kayode.

‘Dr Odumodu’ issued a Standard Chartered Bank cheque for the agreed sum and directed his ‘driver’ to go with the dealer to lodge the cheque in his account domiciled in First Bank, Iwo Road branch.

The cheque could, however, not be confirmed as the account had the name of Akinjide Sefiu Odusanya.

On hearing the news, Adeojo pretended to be surprised and left with the SUV with the promise to go and bring another cheque to pay for the car, while leaving Oni behind.

Oni had pretended to be sick all the while and took advantage of the moment the dealer went to return a borrowed battery to his colleague to strike.

Before the dealer’s return, Oni had made away with the car.

The two were also linked with another theft involving a Toyota Matrix car in Iwo, Osun State.

Italian police bust two Nigerian mafia gangs, arrest 32

Two Nigerian mafia clans operating in Italy and abroad to traffic and sell Nigerian women into sex slavery and prostitution have been busted by Italian police.

In a massive operation on Tuesday, some 32 people were arrested in Puglia, Sicily, Campania, Calabria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Marche, Emilia Romagna, Veneto and, abroad, in Germany, France, Netherlands and Malta.

The report by ANSA, Italian news agency did not indicate whether the 32 are all Nigerians and whether there were European collaborators arrested with them.

In July, the Italian Police also announced the arrest of 19 Nigerians, said to be members of a mafia.


Those probed are suspected of conspiracy, trafficking, making slaves of women, extortion, robbery, bodily harm, sexual violence and exploitation of prostitution, police said.

The probe was led by Bari anti-mafia prosecutors and coordinated by the central operational service in Rome with the help of Interpol.

The investigation was carried out by the Bari flying squad.

The two clans were the Supreme Vikings Confraternity and the Supreme Eye Confraternity, better known as “Reds” e “Blues”.

The gangs operated with the slogan “the three Ds”, referring to “donne, denaro e droga” (women, money and drugs).

Some 49 people were placed under investigation, all Nigerian nationals.

Investigators said the women, most of them trafficked and subjected to physical and psychological violence, also via voodoo rites, were forced to become sex workers.

The proceeds of the prostitution rackets were sent to Nigeria via couriers or ‘hawala’ systems, or reinvested in drug trafficking.

Was Offset's Instagram account hacked? Cardi B responds to his cheating rumours

Cardi B has responded to claims that Offset had cheated by saying that his Instagram had been hacked.

It had kicked off on social media after Tekashi 6ix9ine's girlfriend took to Instagram to post a video that Offset had sent her a direct message, telling her: "Miss us fr."

The Shaderoom reported that Tekashi's girlfriend wrote in an Instagram post: "Your wife @iamcardib has a OPEN CRIMINAL CASE, why are you writing me you don't respect her??????? There [is] a lot of s*** I haven't exposed yet, but there's a time for that."

She went on to quote Cardi B from the song Backin' It Up by Pardison Fontane, writing: "I'm the QUEEN of talking s*** now I'm backing it up."


The 27-year-old rapper was not going to take this lying down and Cardi was quick to reply in a bid to shut down the rumours.

In fact, she claimed that Offset's account had been hacked, so there were no messages from him, just from the hacker.

Cardi wrote, alongside a video: "Just woke up and we dealing with this s***."

The video showed a page of Offset's Twitter account's privacy settings with Cardi claiming the hackers were attempting to reset or change his password.

There had been another screenshot shared by The Shaderoom that would indicate that Offset's account had been hacked as it showed now-deleted tweets that were of an explicit nature.

There was doubt among some on social media though, with the timings being pointed out and that the hack seemingly started after the Instagram DM to Tekashi's girlfriend.

She posted to this effect, writing: "the hack started after you got exposed."

Tekashi's girlfriend added: "Why it didn't start at 1am."

Cardi responded again with a message to Offset on Instagram saying: "Babe just relax. Both waking up to the bulls***."

Later there was a lengthier video in which Cardi explains what she believes has happened and hopes this clears up the situation.

Cardi says: "Hey guys, so as you can see, this guy's Instagram has been hacked. We look crazy, we just woke up. We've been sick throughout the whole damn night [...] Anyways, you know, I know babe, you've done some dumb s***.

"Everybody knows he's done some dumb s***. But come on now, [he's] not dumb, he's not crazy, we've been so good, we had a sweet weekend, our life has been good, he's not going to play himself like that.

"That's why I'm not going to entertain that, that's why I'm not getting rowdy. Simple as that."

Jealous man ordered his wife to swallow wedding ring before 'murdering her'

A "jealous and violent" man told his estranged wife to swallow her wedding ring before allegedly beating her to death in a "brutal" attack, a court has heard.

Shaun Dyson, 28, is accused of the murder of Lucy-Anne Rushton, 30, in the early hours of June 23 by repeatedly jumping or stamping on her at their home in Andover, Hampshire.

Simon Jones, prosecuting, told Winchester Crown Court that the pair had married in 2010 having eloped to Gretna Green but Ms Rushton became the victim of a "history of domestic violence".

Mr Jones said: "The defendant's and Lucy's relationship is probably best described as toxic.


"Lucy was killed by the defendant; she was the victim of a prolonged and very severe beating, culminating in repeated stamping or jumping or both on her chest and while she was laid on her back."

He continued: "There was no justification for blow after blow, kick after kick, stamp after stamp on Lucy. This was borne out of a jealous rage in a violent man."

Mr Jones said that Dyson, who had already hit Ms Rushton on the evening before she died, had become "enraged" by a phone call she received from a man she had been in a relationship with.

He said that a witness had seen the defendant say to Ms Rushton in the early hours: "Swallow the ring because we are not together any more."

He added that the witness said Ms Rushton had put the ring in her mouth but had not swallowed it because they had seen it on the stairs later, where it was found.

Mr Jones said Ms Rushton had told members of her family in the months before she died that she feared Dyson would murder her.

The prosecutor added: "She was convinced that he was going to do something to her and if he couldn't have her, no-one could."

Mr Jones said that, in February, Ms Rushton had also raised concerns about the defendant and that he "had a bag ready with a change of clothes and weapons".

He said Ms Rushton's mother had also witnessed attacks by Dyson, including over Facetime.

Mr Jones continued: "The fact that Lucy had concerns for her life shortly before she was killed is a significant indication of the state of the relationship and the concern Lucy had of the defendant, who could turn to violence on the most extreme scale with the most extreme consequences."

He added: "It's not disputed the defendant killed Lucy. We say what happened that night was not a momentary loss of control but the culmination of previous episodes of violence that had preceded that night."

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the defendant striking and spitting at Ms Rushton in a hotel corridor in Bournemouth in September 2018.

Dyson, of Andover, Hampshire, denies murder and the trial continues.

Ex-Nigerian leader Murtala Muhammed had N7,000 when he died

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed had N7,000 in his bank account when he was assassinated on 13 February 1976.

His son Risqua Muhammed, made the startling disclosure in Ile-Ife today at the unveiling of the statue of the slain leader at the entrance of the post-graduate hall of residence at Obafemi Awolowo University.

Risqua Muhammed said his father fearlessly fought corruption during his tenure in office as the Head of State and lauded President Muhammad Buhari for doing the same.

Muhammed said his father served Nigeria with integrity during his 200 days in office.


He said he was excited by the honour by post graduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University and urged urged Nigerians to support the crusade against corruption by President Muhammad Buhari-led administration.


The Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, commended the children of the late leader for maintaining his legacies.
