Any harm on Sowore will affect Nigeria/US relationship - US Senator, Menendez

Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Senator and member of the US senate foreign relations committee,  has condemned the arrest and ill-treatment of the convener of Revolution now, Omoyele Sowore.

Speaking about the arrest, and DSS not obeying court orders, Mr Robert said this could affect Nigeria/US relationship. His words;

“The United States is watching and the world is watching. I fear that the blatant harassment of Mr Omoyele Sowore, an activist and journalist whose only crime appears to be exercising his right to free expression, is becoming symptomatic of increasingly closing political and civic space in Nigeria,” Menendez said.

“The Nigerian court has twice ordered his release on bail. And the state security agencies openly defied the court order each time leaving me to conclude that either Nigeria no longer respects the rule of law or President Buhari is woefully out of touch with what agents of his governments are doing in his name.

“This is unacceptable in a country that calls itself a democracy. Journalists who risk their lives to expose the truth should be celebrated, not incarcerated.

“It is unacceptable to that the husband and father of a US citizen with such blatant cruelty. Today, my office contacted our ambassador in Nigeria in an effort to obtain answers on what actions the United States is taking on the Sowore family’s behalf.

“In the next several days, I’ll continue to engage with the states department in Washington to ascertain the impart of what the arrest of Mr Sowore and other activists and journalists will have on our relationship with Nigeria. My hope is that the bilateral relationship we have with Nigeria will be reassessed in light of these events.”

Sowore: NBA rebukes DSS, urges Nigerians to defend rule of law

The Nigerian Bar Association has issued a strong rebuke of the Department of State Services, calling its arrest of Omoyele Sowore in Abuja Court as assault and desecration of the court.

National publicity Kunle Edun also called on Nigerians to defend the rule of law. The full statement:

The Nigerian Bar Association is greatly dismayed at the exhibition of primitivity, thuggery, insane passion for lawlessness, contempt and disrespect for the rule of law by the agents of the Department of State Services (DSS) within the precints of the Federal High Court, Abuja while attempting to re-arrest Citizens Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare earlier today.

Eventually Sowore and Bakare were re-arrested by the DSS inspite of being on bail granted by the Federal High Court.

The NBA has been properly briefed – beyond the shameful videos of the incident in public domain- by our members who witnessed the disgraceful and crass violation of the hallowed precincts of the law by the officers of the Department of State Services, an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The NBA finds it disgraceful that this ‘court riot’ occasioned by the high handedness and insensitivity of the security operatives interrupted judicial proceedings and made the Presiding Judge to abandon judicial proceedings because of safety concerns.

The Nigerian Bar Association strongly condemns the action of the Department of State Security, which is another in the series of impunity and lawlessness exhibited by the DSS.

The invasion of the court by the agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria runs contrary to the avowed assurances of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that he will ensure that the Federal Government and agencies under it obeys court orders. The disrespect of the court by the DSS is legendary and unrivalled.

Few days ago, the officers of the Nigerian Police Force exhibited similar traits when it also invaded the precincts of the High Court, Effurun to arrest Mr. Ademi-Akpeto, Chairman of Sapele branch of the NBA. Many Nigerians are still in unlawful custody and not charged to court. Nigerians are now under siege by security agents who have no regards for the law and the courts.

The NBA urges all Nigerians to be alive to their responsibilities as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and is ready to partner with all Nigerians and civil society organisations to ensure that the rights of Nigerians as guaranteed by Chapter 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended are not trampled upon by by any agency of government.

The NBA therefore, demands as follows:
1. That the Federal Government of Nigeria and the National Assembly immediately investigate the shameful conduct by the DSS and ensure that all persons found culpable are duly punished in accordance with the law.

2. The immediate suspension of the Director General of the Department of State Security from office. We make this demand bearing in mind the fact that the DSS under his leadership has established itself as a brutish and irresponsible agency that derives immense pleasure from violating the fundamental rights of Nigerians and disrespecting court orders.

3. That the National Assembly should review the laws setting up the DSS and indeed all security agencies in Nigeria with a view to repositioning them to be more responsible and responsive to the public.

4. That the Attorney General of the Federation, being the Chief Law officer of the Federation takes over all the political cases or cases involving politically exposed persons presently handled by the DSS.

The above demands of the NBA is without prejudice to the consultations presently going on amongst critical stakeholders in the legal profession and the judiciary on how best to ensure that this sad incident does not re-occur.

NBA thanks all lawyers and Nigerians who have expressed displeasure over this sad incident. NBA shall keep lawyers and Nigerians alike informed of our further engagements with critical stakeholders.

Graphic photo: Police officer allegedly shoots boy dead for retaliating after he slapped him

A police officer in Umuaka village in Imo state has allegedly shot dead an 18-year-old boy for retaliating when the officer slapped him.

Awuzie Duru, 18, was allegedly killed within the premises of a new generation bank branch at Umuaka on Sunday, December 1.

According to reports, Awuzie, popularly known as Aboy, from Isiozi Aka in Umuaka, Imo state, had gone to the bank to withdraw money from the bank’s ATM gallery.

The boy took his space on the line and other newcomers took their place behind him.

After a while, Awuzie left the line to answer a call. When he returned to take his place on the ATM queue, the bank customer who was behind him refused to let him back on the line.

This led to a verbal confrontation. A policeman present witnessed the confrontation but did not interfere. The fight soon turned physical and the policeman got involved and started scolding Awuzie.

According to The Nation, Awuzie then told the officer that he refused to do anything when they were simply exchanging words but wants to scold him now that it has turned into a physical fight. The boy’s killing stirred up tension in the town as the youths in the area began planning an attack on the police station.

Okorocha forfeits state-of-the art hospital to Federal Government

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC secured another victory Friday in its campaign against grand corruption in public service as Justice T.G Ringin of a Federal High Court sitting in Owerri, ordered the final forfeiture of a hospital linked to former governor Rochas Okorocha.

Dews of Hope Hospital, located in the heart of Imo capital of Owerri Dews of Hope Hospital is a N1.5 Billion state-of-the-art 200-bed hospital, whose ownership was denied by a former aide to Okorocha.

The forfeiture came a day after the commission secured the conviction and sentencing of former governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State(1999-2007) for money laundering and corruption.

The Commission had on August 22, 2019 secured the interim forfeiture of the Owerri hospital from a vacation Judge, Justice A. T Mohammed of Federal High Court, Port Harcourt.

The application for interim forfeiture was triggered by evidence that the facility may have been acquired through proceeds of illicit activities, as funds from Government House, Owerri were traced to the hospital.

The Commission’s investigation revealed that Dr. Paschal Obi, former Permanent Secretary and Principal Secretary to then Governor Okorocha, now a serving member of the House of Representatives, was a signatory to the accounts.

However, Obi, like members of the board of the hospital, vehemently denied ownership of the medical facility.

The managing director of the hospital on invitation, could not also explain how the hospital was funded.

These developments led the Commission to file for the forfeiture of the property on July 25, 2019 under Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud, and Other Related Offences Act 2006.

In granting the request for the interim forfeiture of the property, the court ordered the anti-graft agency to publish the Order in a national newspaper, which was accordingly complied with in the Nation Newspaper of August 30, 2019 and Leadership Newspaper of September 3,2019 respectively, asking interested parties to show cause why the property should not be forfeited to the federal government within fourteen days from the dates of the publications.

Upon the expiration of the fourteen day notice and with no one showing interest in the hospital, the Commission filed for the final forfeiture of the facility.

The hospital located at the heart of Owerri metropolis, had an adjourning staff and doctor’s quarters.

Drama as armed DSS move to rearrest Sowore in court

There was a mild drama at the court 7, Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, as armed operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) moved to rearrest Omoyele Sowore, Convener, #RevolutionNow protest, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, at the court premises.

The drama started shortly after Justice Ijoema Ojukwu adjourned the trial continuation till Feb. 11, 12 and 13 for definite hearing.

Justice Ojukwu had, on Thursday, ordered the DSS to release Sowore and Bakare within 24 hours.

Ojukwu, who gave the order, also awarded a N100,000 fine against the DSS over its delay to serve the defence counsel with the additional proof of evidence in the ongoing trial despite the court’s order to the effect.

The DSS had, on Thursday, complied with the court order by releasing the defendants and also paid the fine.

At the Friday’s sitting, the DSS Lawyer, Hassan Listen, SAN, told the court that the security agency had already complied with the order of the court.

He also hinted that based on the agreement between the parties, the matter adjourned till Feb. 11, 12 and 13 to enable the parties respond to applications filed.

Also, speaking, Counsel to the defendants, Femi Falana, SAN, confirmed that his clients were released to him on Thursday evening.

“My Lord, at about 5’o clock yesterday, I received a call from my respected colleague to send our lawyers to receive our clients.

“I am happy to tell you that our clients were released and the N100,000 cost was also paid.

“On account of this, on behalf of our defendants, we wish to express our profound appreciation for your leadership and for standing up for integrity and for standing for the rule of law in Nigeria.

“I also thank my colleague for impressing it on their client to obey the court order.

“I hope my learned friend will allow the defendants to get their freedom notwithstanding the charges,” he told the court.

Justice Ojukwu, who commended the DSS for obeying the Court order, said everyone must be ready to allow the law to take its course irrespective of position one held.

“It is obvious that the DSS has demonstrated its commitment to the rule of law.

“No one is above the law,” adding that those at realms of power must respect the rule of law.

“The DSS has earned the respect of Nigerians for this,” the judge said.

She then adjourned till Feb. 11, 12 and 13 for definite hearing.

The court registrar then called the next case for hearing and as everyone began to move out of the court premises, some officers of the DSS, numbering about 15, who had laid an ambush for the defendants, started making their way towards Sowore and Bakare.

There was a stampede as the officers cocked their guns scaring people away.

Sowore and Bakare, however resisted being rearrested.

They ran back into the court premises as the action resulted in a commotion.

Justice Ojukwu quickly retired into her chamber.

Sowore, while speaking with the newsmen, said the ploy of the security agency was to kill him.

He said their action had shown that they had no respect for the law, the court and the citizens.

And as at the time of filing this report, Sowore, Bakare and the DSS operatives are still at Court 7 as the action has stopped court proceeding for the day.

The 24-year-old born to a Belgian dad and Nigerian mother who has 11 goals and 5 assists in 15 appearances for his club this season, said: “I have never been to Nigeria because of the political situation there. Woman 'cut up and remains thrown in bins by convicted drug dealer she met online'

A woman was allegedly chopped into pieces and her remains dumped in different bins by a convicted drug dealer she met online.

Jorge Ignacio Palma, 37, is understood to have made the horrifying confession after giving himself up to detectives investigating the disappearance of Marta Calvo Buron.

Martha, 25, vanished on November 7 after arranging online to meet Palma at his rented home near the east coast Spanish city of Valencia.

Palma was thought to have fled to Italy before it was reported yesterday he had been in hiding.

He had already been linked to a previous police investigation in April after detectives discovered he had been the last client of a prostitute who reportedly died after suffering convulsions moments after he fled the brothel in Valencia.

Police have already searched rubbish bins in his home town and surrounding villages and are now understood to be focusing on waste plants and municipal tips.

Spanish media reports said a waste plant collecting household rubbish from the area where Palma lived had been ordered to suspend operations at midday yesterday to facilitate the search for Marta’s body parts.

After Palma's reported confession, it is not yet clear what he told cops during a subsequent formal interview in the presence of his defence lawyer.

Juan Carlos Fulgencio, a central government spokesman for the Valencia region, said after the suspect’s arrest: “We could be looking not only at a disappearance, but also at a physical aggression that could have resulted in Marta’s violent death.

“Jorge Ignacio has been arrested, he is in Spain and he is going to be questioned about Marta’s violent disappearance.

“The hypothesis that’s always been on the table is that she suffered a violent assault that possibly caused her death.”

Palma, who returned to Spain after being jailed for drugs trafficking following his 2008 arrest, vanished five days after Marta’s disappearance.

He is said to have handed himself into police after being pressured into doing so by his family.

The rented home where he was last seen with Marta, and a car he is suspected of trying to have disposed of at a scrapyard, had already been searched by police.

Detectives knew where the missing woman had been the night she was last seen because she sent a WhatsApp to her mum with her exact location on as a precaution.
