I’m greater than Sango, Ogun – Oluwo of Iwo

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has stated that he is greater than the two notable Yoruba traditional deities-Sango and Ogun, the Sunnewsonline.com reports.

This position, he says, is without prejudice to their unique roles in Yoruba history, adding that he is proud to be one of their sons.

The monarch, however, maintained that the combined advantages of his education and exposure to other societies had elevated him beyond the accomplishments of the two deities.

“Civilization has overtaken their era to the extent that son of a slave now has no reason not to make it in life. History needs to be only referenced. I must be greater; you must be greater than your fathers, you must be greater than your ancestors.” he said.

According to Oluwo, “greatness should not stop during the age of forefathers. If a son is not greater than his father, it is a sad end to the father.”

He, therefore, urged traditional religion adherents to make the deities more attractive instead of making them a monster, which scares the people.

He said: “Our deities should be repackaged to attract tourists all over the world. We have had enough of doing the same thing and getting the same result over and again.

“I am repackaging our Ofi fabrics to appear more beautiful. The white see me at airport and pleaded to take pictures with me because of my shining attire.”

Hungry artist eats up $120,000 banana displayed as a piece of art at the Art Basel show (video)

A performance artist shook up the crowd at the Art Basel show in Miami Beach on Saturday when he grabbed a banana that had been duct-taped to a gallery wall and ate it.

The banana was, in fact, a work of art by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan titled "Comedian" and sold to a French collector for $120,000.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, David Datuna, who describes himself as a Georgian-born American artist living in New York, walks up to the banana and pulls it off the wall with the duct tape attached.

"Art performance ... hungry artist," he said, as he peeled the fruit and took a bite. "Thank you, very good."

A few bystanders could be heard giggling before a flustered gallery official whisked him to an adjoining space for questioning.

But the kerfuffle was resolved without a food fight.

"He did not destroy the art work. The banana is the idea," Lucien Terras, director of museum relations for Galerie Perrotin, told the Miami Herald.

As it turns out, the value of the work is in the certificate of authenticity, the newspaper reported. The banana is meant to be replaced.

A replacement banana was taped to the wall about 15 minutes after Datuna's stunt.

"This has brought a lot of tension and attention to the booth and we're not into spectacles," Terras said. "But the response has been great. It brings a smile to a lot of people's faces."

Gallery director Peggy Leboeuf said that no legal action was planned against Datuna.

"He was not arrested, but we asked him to leave the booth and to leave the fair," she said.

"We have his contact and everything, so we can go further, but I don't think we will."

Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, others beat Nigeria in World Bank ranking

Nigerian students are not receiving adequate learning, the World Bank said in its latest Nigeria Economic Update.

The NEU, which was released on December 2, blamed poor quality of education or inadequate learning for Nigeria’s low ranking on the Human Capital Index, according to the World Bank.

Nigeria is currently ranked 0.34, placing the country at 152nd position out of 157 nations on the Human Capital Index.

The ranking means that Nigeria is rated as the sixth worst nation in the world based on the HCI survey. Chad, South Sudan, Niger, Mali and Liberia are the only countries that were rated worse than Nigeria.

“Inadequate learning has contributed to Nigeria’s low rank on the Human Capital Index of 0.34, placing the country at 152 out of 157,” the bank said in a section that focused on ‘Financing Human Capital Development: Basic education’, in the Nigeria Economic Update.

The bank observed that although Nigeria has a longstanding commitment to universal basic education, the number of out-of-school children in the country was among the highest in the world.

The Universal Basic Education Act of 2004 stipulates free, compulsory, and universal basic education for six years of primary school followed by three years of junior secondary school.

However, the bank noted that despite the UBE Act, enrollment in basic education in Nigeria had only gone up slightly in recent years.

In 2017/18, the gross enrolment ratio (GER) in the country was 76.6 per cent in primary and 40.0 in junior secondary.

In addition to the low level of enrolment, Nigeria also has major challenges with the quality of education offered to students, according to the bank.

“As for education quality, the 2013 Service Delivery Indicator survey in four Nigerian states found that only one-third of grade four pupils had acquired minimum numeracy and literacy skills,” the bank said.

Noting that Nigerian students are not receiving adequate learning, the bank said, “Children in Nigeria are expected to complete 8.2 years of education by age 18, slightly above the regional average of 8.1.

“However, because they learn relatively little, their years in school are equivalent to just 3.4 years of learning; 4.7 years are lost because the quality of Nigeria’s education system is poor.

President Buhari gives Anthony Joshua a thumbs up

Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari has given World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua a thumbs up.

Joshua yesterday regained his belts in a rematch with Mexican-American, Andy Ruiz Jnr after losing it to him about 6 months ago.

Joshua, though a British boxer, has Nigerian roots. His parents are from Ogun state. He also visited Nigeria in July and spent weeks socialising and is even rumoured to be dating a Nigerian DJ - Cuppy.

She was also in Saudi to physically support him.

The President rejoiced with Joshua and saluted him for bringing joy to millions of Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora, who had rooted for him to regain the titles he lost about six months ago.

“The downfall of a man is truly not the end of his life. There’s always another, and better day. This is a lesson we must all learn from you as a country,” President Buhari told the comeback world champion, in a statement issued Sunday by media adviser, Femi Adesina.

Buhari wishes Anthony Joshua well as he seeks to bring more glory to Nigeria, and the boxing profession.

My greatest fear remains poverty and failure- Funke Akindele Bello

Actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele-Bello, is undoubtedly one entertainer who is very passionate about what she does. Described by many who have worked with her as being hardworking and professional, it is normal to wonder what drives her.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, the Jenifa Diary’s actress revealed what fuels her passion. Sparing some advice for up and coming actors who want to succeed in their careers, she said, “To be successful, you must be sure that you really have the talent. You need to ask yourself if indeed, you can do it. Also, you must be patient and focused. You need to grow and learn. You also need to find what motivates you. As for me, my greatest fears are that of poverty and failure. Yes, there are times one would want to give up but my mum once told me that Rome was not built in a day, so one has to keep working hard.

“You also have to be professional at all times. Properly read and digest your scripts before going on stage or camera.”

We have no reason to declare Orji Kalu's seat vacant - Senate

The Senate on Friday ruled out the possibility of declaring vacant, the seat of its Chief Whip, Senator Orji  Kalu,  following his conviction by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday.

Kalu,   a former governor of Abia State, was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment over a N7.1bn fraud charges against him since 2007 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Reacting to the calls on the leadership of the Senate to declare his seat vacant,  the Spokesperson for the red chamber, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, said it was not possible.

He said such a request would only be considered after the embattled senator had explored all the legal options available to him without success.

Akwashiki argued that the constitution of Nigeria does not mandate the Senate President to unilaterally declare the seat of any senator facing prosecution or convicted by a lower court, vacant.

He said, “The Senate has no reason to declare his seat vacant. This is not the first time that such a thing would happen.

“There is no provision in the constitution that says the seat of any senator facing prosecution or convicted at a lower court should be declared vacant.

“He still has the opportunity to appeal the case.

“Even the tenure of a former governor Joshua Dariye, who has been in prison for some time now, ran its course until the end of the 8th National Assembly. Nobody declared his seat vacant.

“The Senate President cannot declare the seat of Kalu vacant. It is against the law.

“Tell those who are canvassing such things that there is nothing like that, it is a non-issue,” the Senate spokesperson added.

At least 43 people have died in a factory fire in India’s capital New Delhi, with the toll expected to rise, police told AFP.

The blaze broke out in the early hours in the city’s old quarter, whose narrow and congested lanes are lined with many small manufacturing and storage units.

“We… have since rescued at least 50 people,” Sunil Choudhary, New Delhi’s deputy chief fire officer said.

They were “labourers and factory workers sleeping inside this four-or-five storey building,” he said, adding that the fire had been extinguished but rescue operations were ongoing.

8 officers suspended over Ikoyi prison electrocution

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has approved the suspension of seven senior officers and one junior official of the Nigerian Correctional Service over the electrocution of five inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos.

This, it said, was to facilitate investigation into the incident, where seven other inmates were injured on Monday.

Punch learnt that preliminary investigation had indicted the eight personnel for negligence.

A letter signed by the Secretary of the Board, Mallam Hassan Yakmut, stated that the indicted officers were placed on suspension pending “the determination of the Discipline and General Purpose Committee of the Board.”

A statement by the NCS spokesman, Controller of Corrections, Francis Enobore in Abuja on Friday, read, “The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has approved the suspension of seven senior and one junior personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service over the unfortunate electrocution of five inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Lagos, in order to facilitate unfettered investigation into the sad incident.”

The service had earlier said the cell where the five inmates died was holding 140 persons instead of the 35 it was meant to keep, adding that the custodial centre, built in 1955 for 800 inmates had a population of 3,113 inmates with 2,680 awaiting trial persons.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, during his visit to the facility ordered a probe into the incident and directed that necessary actions be taken to prevent future occurrence.

The source said, “His lifeless body was already cold when it was discovered around 12.00 a.m. Saturday.

“That suggests he died on Friday without anyone knowing about it. I passed by his office around 7.30 p.m. on Friday and his car was not parked at the usual spot. So, no one knew he was around.

“Some members of staff later observed light was on in his office and entered there. He was already cold by then.”

DSS denies they attempted to rearrest Sowore in a courtroom... releases statement

The Department of State Services has rebutted what it called “serial misinformation” about what transpired in the courtroom of Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu on Friday, with the agency categorically denying that its men tried to arrest Saharareporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore inside the court.

In a long statement by the spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, the agency said its men were not in the courtroom and that the pandemonium about the imaginary arrest inside the court, was orchestrated by the Sowore crowd, with the intent to bring the agency into disrepute, both locally and internationally.

The statement hinted that Sowore’s re-arrest on Friday was over a fresh statement he made to some people after his release on 5 December at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja to the effect that he intends to “create anarchy in the country”. Below is the full statement...

DSS AND THE 6TH DECEMBER, 2019 FEDERAL HIGH COURT, ABUJA INCIDENT

It has become important that the Department of State Services responds to the serial misinformation being circulated in the media about its involvement in the incident that occurred on 6th December, 2019 at the Federal High Court, Abuja. It is instructive to note that during the court proceeding of the day under reference, Defence Counsel, Femi FALANA (SAN), called the attention of the Judge to a suspicion that the Service was planning to re-arrest Omoyele SOWORE immediately after the court session. The Court discountenanced his alarm and asserted that the Service was law abiding and would not engage in such and subsequently adjourned to February, 2020.

However, when SOWORE stepped out of the court and sighted operatives of the Service within the premises, he ran back into the courtroom. In a bid to shield him from an imaginary arrest, his uncontrollable supporters mobbed him while chanting “you can’t arrest him” thus the pandemonium that ensued.

A critical look at the videos in circulation would convince any objective viewer that there was no DSS personnel during the entire period the Sowore crowd acted out its orchestrated drama. Its personnel were never, at any time, involved in the incident. In actual fact, it was his people who seized him. And from the latest developments, it has become obvious what the intent for such mischief was meant for – simply to serve a propagandist purpose as well as bring the Service to disrepute.

Eye witness and several media accounts have disclosed that the Court had adjourned peacefully without an untoward incident when suddenly the unruly crowd imported into the Courtroom went into frenzy on the mere suspicion that DSS was sighted at the court premises. The eventual re-arrest of Sowore by the DSS was effected outside the courtroom. His lead counsel has affirmed this.

The DSS, as a professional, responsible and law abiding Organisation, could not have invaded a courtroom including the one presided over by a respected Judge who is not only handling its case but whose Order was unconditionally obeyed within a 24 hour ultimatum. The Service holds the judiciary in utmost respect and will continue to work with it for national peace and public safety in Nigeria.

It has therefore become unarguable and raises a moral question as to who, between Sowore and the Service, dislikes or disobeys the Courts. In this regard, public attention may be drawn to the 25th July 2019 statement of SOWORE that “I’m not talking of protest. I’m embarking on revolution… Don’t tell me about legal implications or what a Judge will say. I don’t care …” On 5th December when SOWORE was released, he had, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja addressed a group of persons who, he reassured of his cause to create anarchy in the country.

It may be recalled that the Service had on 3rd December, 2019 raised alarm about a plot to destabilize the country. It is quite remarkable that the plot has already started playing out. To ensure this objective is further achieved, some persons and groups are scurrying to seize the opportunity of the misleading court incident and the wrong narrative against the DSS to organize an insurrection in the country. They have continued to falsely curry and mobilize international sentiments and attention, through clear misrepresentation of the facts, for their selfish ends.

The DSS, as a professional, responsible and law abiding Organization, could not have invaded a courtroom including the one presided over by a respected Judge who is not only handling its case but whose Order was unconditionally obeyed within a 24 hour ultimatum. The Service holds the judiciary in utmost respect and will continue to work with it for national peace and public safety in Nigeria.

For emphasis, it should be noted that SOWORE is facing trial not as an activist, journalist or a politician, but for his resort to call for violence, forceful takeover of government and suspected transnational illegal activities. It is most unfortunate that SOWORE, shortly after being released from custody, based on court order, resorted to acts inimical to security. To this effect, only SOWORE has been re-arrested as his co-defendant, Olawale BAKARE, was not picked up even when FALANA had promised to deliver him to the Service that is not presently interested in him.

Though sections of the populace have been fed with spurious narratives about these developments, Nigerians and the International Community should not be gullible or even vulnerable to the machinations of groups desirous of misleading them.

The Service is committed to the discharge of its mandate of detecting and preventing threats against the internal security of Nigeria. It supports democracy in the country and will do all that is legal to protect it. It will also ensure that efforts of anti-democratic forces are frustrated.

Any harm on Sowore will affect Nigeria/US relationship - US Senator, Menendez

Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Senator and member of the US senate foreign relations committee,  has condemned the arrest and ill-treatment of the convener of Revolution now, Omoyele Sowore.

Speaking about the arrest, and DSS not obeying court orders, Mr Robert said this could affect Nigeria/US relationship. His words;

“The United States is watching and the world is watching. I fear that the blatant harassment of Mr Omoyele Sowore, an activist and journalist whose only crime appears to be exercising his right to free expression, is becoming symptomatic of increasingly closing political and civic space in Nigeria,” Menendez said.

“The Nigerian court has twice ordered his release on bail. And the state security agencies openly defied the court order each time leaving me to conclude that either Nigeria no longer respects the rule of law or President Buhari is woefully out of touch with what agents of his governments are doing in his name.

“This is unacceptable in a country that calls itself a democracy. Journalists who risk their lives to expose the truth should be celebrated, not incarcerated.

“It is unacceptable to that the husband and father of a US citizen with such blatant cruelty. Today, my office contacted our ambassador in Nigeria in an effort to obtain answers on what actions the United States is taking on the Sowore family’s behalf.

“In the next several days, I’ll continue to engage with the states department in Washington to ascertain the impart of what the arrest of Mr Sowore and other activists and journalists will have on our relationship with Nigeria. My hope is that the bilateral relationship we have with Nigeria will be reassessed in light of these events.”
