Hair dye and straighteners linked to cancer - study

Women who use permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t, according to research published in the International Journal of Cancer.

The Sister Study included data from 46,709 women. Researchers with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that women who regularly used permanent hair dye in the year before the study were nine percent more likely to develop breast cancer than women who didn't.

The study goes on to suggest that the number was even more dramatic among African-American women. African-American women who used permanent dyes every five to eight weeks were associated with a 60 percent increase, compared to an eight percent increase among white women.


That number was just for the permanent dye. There was little to no increase for women who used semi-permanent or temporary dye.

"Researchers have been studying the possible link between hair dye and cancer for a long time, but results have been inconsistent," said corresponding author Alexandra White, Ph.D., head of the NIEHS Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group.

"In our study, we see a higher breast cancer risk associated with hair dye use, and the effect is stronger in African American women, particularly those who are frequent users."

As for chemical straighteners, researchers found that women who use them at least every five to eight weeks were about 30 percent more likely to develop breast cancer.

Dale Sandler, Ph.D., one of the study’s authors, said that there is some evidence from previous studies to support a link between hair straighteners and an increased risk of breast cancer, but more research needs to be done.

Police capture 24 Awawa Boys in Lagos

Officers of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested 24 members of a dreaded cult group, ‘Awawa Boys.’

A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bala Elkana on Sunday said the arrest took place on Thursday at bout 11am.

He said the Special Strike Force established by CP Hakeem Odumosu to tackle the menace of cultism, gangsterism, traffic robbery, street violence and other social vices in Lagos State made the arrest at Mosafejo, Oshodi.

“They are mostly members of Awawa boys and Eiye confraternity. They are responsible for series of traffic robberies and violent crimes within Oshodi and environs. The suspects will be charged to Court,” he said.

Single mum marries her RUG in lavish ceremony surrounded by friends (photos)

When Bekki Cocks’ friends told her that if she loved her rug so much she should marry it – not many of them expected her to follow through with it.

But today, the 26-year-old casino worker declared “I Rug You” in front of specially invited guests as she married the rug of her life in a special service.

Bekki and ‘Mat’ – the name given to her favourite rug by the mum-of-two – tied the knot and enjoying a relaxing honeymoon at home in Greater Manchester.

During the intimate hour-long service Bekki, who was dressed in a traditional all-white wedding dress for the occasion, promised to love, honour and care for Mat ‘till death us do part’.


Bekki said: “I bought Mat about a year ago and I’ve been banging on about how much I love him to anyone who will listen ever since.

“It became a bit of a thing with my friends who used to joke ‘if you love Mat so much why don’t you marry him?’.

“I spend so much time looking after him – cleaning him and vacuuming him a couple of times every day and making sure he always looks his very best – I couldn’t imagine being without him now.”

Bekki uses stain remover to clear up any mess her two young children may have left on ‘Mat’ during the day.

When the kids are in bed, I’ll often just lie down with him and tell him my most private thoughts.

And in the evening, Bekki will give Mat one final clean to ensure he enjoys a crumb-free night.

Bekki added: “I am a little obsessed with Mat. When the kids are in bed, I’ll often just lie down with him and tell him my most private thoughts.

“I’m a single mum, so he’s become a confidant and I always seem to be able to think things through properly when we’ve been together.

Building collapse: Lagos shuts 19 houses in Ikorodu

Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, over the weekend shut down 19 buildings in Igbogbo Baiyeku area of Ikorodu, Lagos, for violating the town planning laws of the State.

General Manager, LASBCA, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, led the enforcement team of the agency, escorted by officials of the State Taskforce.

The Chairman, Igbogbo Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, Olusesan Daini was also in the team.

In one of the area, eight buildings were shut because their owners did not have building permits and other required documents. Buildings were also shut at Kosebinu Orepekun Street, Market Street, Ogolonto, among others.


According to Kosegbe, the government team was in the area on enforcement and sensitisation to let the people know the reason why they must build right in view of incessant collapsed buildings being experienced in some parts of the state.

She said developers could not erect any building without informing LASBCA, saying that was the reason government officers were shutting down structures.

Kosegbe said any developer that did not notify government about development of their structure could be arrested, as government did not want incidence of collapsed buildings.

According to her, most of the properties sealed had already been served abatement notices, adding that LASBCA also engaged in post construction audit, where those who had already completed their buildings were asked to present documents to ascertain if they got the needed permits to erect such structures.

Chairman, Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA, Daini, said the essence of the enforcement and sensitisation exercise was to reduce incidence of building collapse and maintain standard.

“The problem we have is that people don’t build right. Affected residents are to go to LASBCA to regularise their documents and those building now should get their building permits. They should be citizens. Government is not doing this alone to generate revenue, but to protect the citizens,” he said.

A lady who goes by the name samantha_vee_ on instagram, has taken to the platform to complain bitterly about church workers turning her back from the entrance over indecent dressing. She says she sees nothing wrong with her dressing and wants that addressed, hence her social media cry.

While narrating what she claims happened this morning, the lady who was with a little cousin wrote;

It's pretty unfortunate because we are own problems imagine depriving myself of sleep to attend church to praise God and thank him for my life only to be chased back we were Blocked right from the gate and were treated in the most humiliating manner but thank God i could stay calm God gave me the mind to overlook I respected the fact I was in his presence it's sad how even serving God is mad hard for us humans the content if the heart is what matters not the physical appearance reasons why alot of people are discouraged going to the house of God .

Growing up I was taught one thing God said come as you are . I believe that's what God is truly like . After all is said and done to God be the glory I wasn't allowed to attend Mass we were all sent back home .

It's just sickening , the mentality of people the church as a whole we need to address this issues your going to the house of God to seek rest and peace? Well that's where the real trouble is .and it shouldn't be so

19-year-old Yahoo boy sets his girlfriend ablaze in Lagos (video)

Operatives of Iba Police Station have arrested a 19-year-old boy, Orji Ifeanyichukwu for allegedly setting his 24-year-old girlfriend, Alabi Tolani ablaze because she had another lover.

DSP Bala Elkana, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, said this in a statement released to newsmen on Sunday.

Elkana said that the incident took place at G54, Army Post Service Housing Estate, Ojo, Lagos where they both lived in Ifeanyichukwu’s N600, 000 per annum apartment.

“Ifeanyichukwu met the victim on Feb. 28, through a hookup and she moved into his house in March.

“He has been into internet fraud popularly known as Yahoo boys for the past three years where he gets the proceeds for renting the apartment.

“They have since then, inhabited as lovers because her parents live apart,” the police spokesman said.

He said that Ifeanyichukwu brought Tolani into his house with conditions that she would quit prostitution and stick to him alone.

“However, trouble started on Thursday when the victim left home to fix her hair and did not return until the next day.

“She equally left the house on Friday under the guise of visiting her father but ended up seeing another man.

“Ifeanyichukwu got to know on Saturday when she returned by scrolling through her phone and saw her chats, video calls and pictures of herself naked which she sent to her client,” Elkana said.

He said that the suspect (Ifeanyichukwu) became angry and used the petrol he kept for his generator to set her ablaze.

“A team of detectives visited the scene and the victim has been taken to General Hospital, Igando where she was admitted but died in the early hours of Sunday.

“The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu has directed the immediate transfer of the case to Criminal Investigation Department Yaba.

“The suspect confessed to the commission of the crime and will be charged to court for murder,” Elkana said

A TV reporter has blasted a runner for smacking her bottom in the middle of a live broadcast. Alex Bozarjian was covering a charity running race in Savannah, Georgia, for a local TV station when a man slapped her backside.

She was unfazed by a handful of jokey attempts to photobomb her coverage but was shocked by the sickening stunt on Saturday.

Ms Bozarjian condemned him on Twitter, writing: ‘To the man who smacked my butt on live TV this morning: You violated, objectified, and embarrassed me.’ ‘No woman should EVER have to put up with this at work or anywhere!! Do better.’

Fellow reporter Emily Block of The Florida Times-Union replied: ‘This is disgusting. Sending strength and solidarity your way. Now, let’s get this grimy dude and warn the women in his life.’

ABC News 13 journalist Caitlyn Penter wrote: ‘DO NOT TOUCH REPORTERS. Period.’

The director of race organisers Savannah Sports Council, Robert Wells, condemned the incident as ‘100% unacceptable’ and promised to identify the runner. He suggested photo evidence and race bib numbering would make it easy to trace him.

Some social media users appeared to have found the identity of a man with identical clothes and a matching race bib, although the authorities haven’t confirmed if it’s him.

Presidency gives reasons why Sowore was rearrested

The Presidency has dismissed insinuations in the media about the re-arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) of Omoyele Sowore, saying no government will allow anybody to openly call for destabilization in the country and do nothing.

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, made this statement in Abuja on Sunday, in reaction to insinuations in the media about DSS re-arrest of Sowore.

He said: ”Nigerians do not need another spate of lawlessness and loss of lives all in the name of ‘revolution’, especially not one that is orchestrated by a man who makes his home in faraway New York – and who can easily disappear and leave behind whatever instability he intends to cause, to wit, Nnamdi Kanu.”


According to the presidential aide, the DSS does not necessarily need the permission of the Presidency in all cases to carry out its essential responsibilities that are laid down in the Nigerian Constitution.

He maintained that Sowore, who called for a revolution to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria, ”is a person of interest to the DSS.”

Shehu said: ”He did so on television, and from a privileged position as the owner of a widely-read digital newspaper run from the U.S.

”He founded an organisation, Revolution Now, to launch, in their own words, “Days of Rage”, with the publicised purpose of fomenting mass civil unrest and the elected administration’s overthrow.

”No government will allow anybody to openly call for destabilization in the country and do nothing.

”Mr Sowore is no ordinary citizen expressing his views freely on social media and the internet.

”He was a presidential candidate himself, who ran – and lost – as the flag bearer of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Feb. 23 general elections.”

He further observed that Nigeria’s democracy was a long time in the making, and was achieved after ”decades of often harsh, military-led overthrows of government: the kind of situation Sowore was advocating.

”To believe in and desire armed revolution is not normal amongst ‘human rights activists’, as Sowore has been incorrectly described.

”Again, it is no surprise that he should be a person of interest to the DSS.’

According to Shehu, Nigeria is already dealing with an insurgency that has left millions of people displaced and desperate in the northeastern region of the country.

”The Boko Haram militants, who are behind the violence, also fancy themselves to be fighting for some sort of revolution,” he added.

The presidential aide, therefore, opined that Sowore’s self-imposed predicament ”is a matter for the DSS, acting under its powers.”

US rapper, Juice Wrld suddenly dies as he walks through the airport

American rapper, Juice Wrld is dead. He died after suffering a seizure at Chicago’s Midway airport.

The rapper, who is best known for his songs “Lucid Dreams” and “Wasted,” just turned 21 on December 2.

According to TMZ report, Juice Wrld, whose real name is Jarad Anthony Higgins, had recently landed at the airport following a flight from California. He suffered a seizure while walking through the airport. When emergency personnel approached him, he was “bleeding from the mouth.”

Although he was still conscious when transported to the hospital, he died a short time later.

Woman tortures and burns 10-year-old girl claiming she is a witch (photo)

A 10-year-old girl resident in Sandfield Estate, Satellite Town, Lagos, has been rescued from her guardian identified simply as Mrs Anaeme, who tortured her for allegedly being a witch.

The woman had reportedly subjected the little girl, Chidera, to serial assaults with marks of violence visible all over her body.

It was gathered that the torture took the worst dimension recently when Anaeme reportedly used a hot object to inflict injuries on the girl’s back.

Neighbours, who know about her ordeal, were said to have informed the estate chairman and managed to capture a video clip of the injuries.


The case was consequently reported at the Agboju Police Station, leading to Anaeme’s arrest on Wednesday.

There are, however, concerns that the case could be brushed under the carpet as the suspect was released the following day on the grounds that she is nursing a year old child.

The estate Chairman, Donald Ejikeme, said he called the Divisional Police Officer of the station when she found that the woman had been released but he was told that she would be transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja on Monday.

He said, “Some months ago, I was driving out of the estate in the morning when I saw the little girl, carrying a bucket around. I had to stop and collected the bucket from her. I asked her why she was carrying a bucket when other children were in school. She was mute. I took a second look at her and noticed that she was unkempt and there were bruises all over her body.

“I asked our security man to get her details. I didn’t see her again afterward until a neighbour came to report to me that the girl cries every night because her guardian usually locks her up in the toilet and torture her.

“I asked the neighbour to get video evidence so we can take it up. I then reported the case to the DPO on Wednesday. When I saw the woman walking around the estate on Thursday, I had to call the DPO and he promised that she would be taken to gender unit on Monday.”

Ejikeme said on the day Anaeme was arrested, the police found the girl in a church where the woman took her to for deliverance.

He added, “She said the girl possesses evil spirit. The pastor was arrested. He denied telling the woman that the girl is a witch. He was later released after some elders in the church intervened.”

An executive member of a rights group, Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network of Nigeria, Mr Osita Osemene, said the group had taken up the matter to ensure that justice is served.

He stated, “The woman should be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent. She claimed that the girl was possessed and burnt her back. Neighbours complained that she beat the girl every day. Even if the girl is her child, she has no right to treat her that way. We are taking up the matter.”

Man in wheelchair catches fire after falling asleep with a cigarette in his hand

A man in a wheelchair was burned in Midtown early Saturday after falling asleep with a cigarette in his hand, police said.

The 43-year-old man was sitting outside a building on East 53rd Street near 5th Avenue just after 7 a.m. when he fell asleep holding the lit cigarette, officials said.

The snoozing smoker then dropped the burning butt into his lap, where it began to scorch him, authorities said.


Emergency responders quashed the small blaze in less than 20 minutes — but his wheelchair burned down to its frame.

He was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s with first-degree burns on his legs, police said.

“His arms were burned bad,” a nearby food cart vendor told The Post. “I saw a lot of smoke.”

I’m greater than Sango, Ogun – Oluwo of Iwo

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has stated that he is greater than the two notable Yoruba traditional deities-Sango and Ogun, the Sunnewsonline.com reports.

This position, he says, is without prejudice to their unique roles in Yoruba history, adding that he is proud to be one of their sons.

The monarch, however, maintained that the combined advantages of his education and exposure to other societies had elevated him beyond the accomplishments of the two deities.

“Civilization has overtaken their era to the extent that son of a slave now has no reason not to make it in life. History needs to be only referenced. I must be greater; you must be greater than your fathers, you must be greater than your ancestors.” he said.


According to Oluwo, “greatness should not stop during the age of forefathers. If a son is not greater than his father, it is a sad end to the father.”

He, therefore, urged traditional religion adherents to make the deities more attractive instead of making them a monster, which scares the people.

He said: “Our deities should be repackaged to attract tourists all over the world. We have had enough of doing the same thing and getting the same result over and again.

“I am repackaging our Ofi fabrics to appear more beautiful. The white see me at airport and pleaded to take pictures with me because of my shining attire.”
