Kenyan court grants bail to Nairobi governor charged with corruption

Kenyan court granted bail on Wednesday to the Nairobi County governor charged with multi-million dollar corruption in one of the most high profile cases in the government’s anti-graft push. The move was opposed by the prosecution, which argued Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was likely to interfere with witnesses and obstruct the investigation.

Sonko, an elected official from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party known for his flamboyant lifestyle, was arrested on Friday.

He has denied charges of conspiracy to commit corruption, conflict of interest, failure to comply with procurement laws, unlawful acquisition of public property and laundering.

Lagos to enact law criminalising keeping of dangerous animals as pets by individuals

The Lagos State Government is to enact a law criminalising the keeping of dangerous animals as pets by individuals.

This follows the capture and tranquilizing of a two-year-old lion kept in a residential property in Ikoyi, Lagos on Nov. 18.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) the Lagos State Attorney-General (AG) and Commissioner for Justice, made the disclosure at a media parley held at the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday.

He said it would soon be submitted to the Lagos State House of Assembly to be passed into law.

“The bill is to take care of scenarios like what happened at Ikoyi where an individual kept a lion in his home.

“It will also cover situations where individuals keep dangerous pets and dogs which cause harm to members of the public,” he said.

Fresh Crisis rocks Presidency as Aisha Buhari attacks Mamman Daura, Garba Shehu

Nigeria’s First Lady has accused a close relative of President Muhammadu Buhari of issuing a presidential directive behind her husband.

Aisha Buhari, in a statement she signed and sent to Daily Trust newspaper, accused Mamman Daura of issuing a directive to a presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, not to recognise her office.

Mr Buhari had before his election in 2015 said he would not allow for the office of the First Lady. During Mr Buhari’s first term in office, the presidency repeatedly referred to Mrs Buhari as the ‘wife of the president.’

However, after the president’s re-election, Mrs Buhari released a statement saying she should henceforth be referred to as the First Lady and her office as the ‘Office of the First Lady’.

Since then, the presidency has referred to Mrs Buhari as the First Lady and President Buhari has also assigned official aides to her office.

On Wednesday, however, Mrs Buhari accused Mr Daura and Mr Shehu of undermining her office.

“Nigeria’s development is hinged on the ability of public officials to execute their mandates professionally, and to be shining examples in their various areas of endeavor. It is not a good sign when officials abandoned their responsibility and start clutching at straws,” the first lady wrote in the statement she sent to Daily Trust.

Her spokesperson, Suleiman Haruna, confirmed to Premium Times that Mrs Buhari authored the mail.

“As spokesperson of the President, he has the onerous responsibility of managing the image of the President and all the good works that he is executing in the country. Rather than face this responsibility squarely, he has shifted his loyalty from the President to others who have no stake in the compact that the President signed with Nigerians on May 29, 2015 and 2019.

“To make matters worse, Mr. Shehu has presented himself to these people as a willing tool and executioner of their antics, from the corridors of power even to the level of interfering with the family affairs of the President. This should not be so. The blatant meddling in the affairs of a First Lady of a country is a continuation of the prodigal actions of those that he serves.

“We all remember that the chief proponent appropriated to himself and his family a part of the Presidential Villa, where he stayed for almost 4 years and when the time came for him to leave, he orchestrated and invaded my family’s privacy through a video circulated by Mamman’s Daughter, Fatima, the public was given the impression that on arrival into the country I was locked out of the villa by Mr. President. Garba Shehu as Villa Spokesperson, knew the truth and had the responsibility to set the records straight, but because his allegiance is somewhere else and his loyalty misplaced, he deliberately refused to clear the air and speak for the President who appointed him in the first place.

“Consequently, his action has shown a complete breakdown of trust between the First Family and him.

“Mr. Shehu was privy and part of the plan and it’s execution and he was shocked when he realized that I had publicized my return to Nigeria on October 12, 2019 and cleared the air on the many rumors that took over social media, a job he was supposed to do but kept mute to cause more confusion and instability for his Principal and his family. “Garba then, vented his anger on the National Television Authority (NTA) Management insisting that the media crew to my office must be sacked. He succeeded in getting them suspended for doing their job. I had to intervene to save the innocent staff from losing their means of livelihood by involving the Department of State Services (DSS) in order to ascertain roles played by key actors in the saga.

“It is at this late hour that I recall, sadly, that it was the same Garba Shehu who claimed that the government will not allow office of the First Lady to run. He was later to confirm to one of my aides that he was instructed to say so by Mamman Daura and not the President. This antic attracted the anger of Nigerian women. He didn’t realize the fact that First Lady’s office is a tradition which has become an institution. ” Today, even without a budget, I am able to run my humanitarian programmes. In saner climes, Garba Shehu would have resigned immediately after going beyond his boundaries and powers.

“The latest of his antics was to wage a war on the first family through an orchestrated media campaign of calumny by sponsoring pseudo accounts to write and defame my children and myself.

“Based on Garba Shehu’s misguided sense of loyalty and inability to stay true and loyal to one person or group, it has become apparent that all trust has broken down between him and my family due to the many embarrassments he has caused the Presidency and the first family. We all have families to consider in our actions and therefore it is in the best interest of all concerned for Garba Shehu to take the advice of the authority, given to him sometimes in the first week of November, 2019,” Mrs Buhari wrote.

Mrs Buhari has repeatedly complained about the influence of Mr Daura in the villa and on her husband.

She once accused him and others of hijacking her husband’s presidency and threatened not to support Mr Buhari’s second term bid.

Mr Daura is one of the closest confidants of the Nigerian leader and is considered one of the most powerful unelected officials in government.

30 pirated films sellers arrested in Lagos

The Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB) on Tuesday said that 30 traders had been arrested in clampdown on sellers of pirated films in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Mr Dele Balogun, said in a statement that the traders were arrested after a week-long raid on pirated films outlets in eight local governments areas across the state.

He said that between Dec. 3 and Dec. 10, the board, in collaboration with security agencies, raided Kosofe, Alimosho, Mushin, Surulere, Oshodi-Isolo, Agege, Lagos Island and Ikorodu council areas.

He said that tens of pirated DVDs, CDs, unclassified films, film production equipment, as well as pornographic materials, were seized within the period.

Balogun added that during the raid, which was met with some resistance in some areas, cameras and other equipment were seized from presumed movie practitioners for shooting movies in the state without the approval of LSFVCB.

He said the raid was part of efforts to rid the state of pirated and unclassified movies and ensure that producers of movies compiler with laid down rules in the production of films.

The LSFCVB boss said the sale of pirated and unclassified films had become a thriving business in the state, saying the board would do all possible to check the problem.

R.a.p.e.d for money 'by her father's friends! The sad story of an Indian teen girl

Every weekend for two years, men would come home and rape her, the 12-year-old told counsellors. Some were known to her father, some were not.

It all began, she said, with her father inviting friends home for drinks. The inebriated men would tease and grope her in front of her parents. Sometimes, she said, the men would disappear into their single, musty bedroom with her mother.

Then one day, the girl recounted, her father pushed her into the bedroom with one of his friends and locked the door from outside. The man raped her.

Childhood soon became a nightmare. Her father would call up men, booking their time with his daughter, and taking money from them. Counsellors believe the girl was raped by at least 30 men since then.

On 20 September, acting on a tip-off from teachers, child welfare officers rescued the girl from her school and took her to a shelter home. A medical examination confirmed rape, according to child welfare officials.

Four men, including her father, have been arrested in connection with the case. They have been charged with rape, using a child for pornographic purposes and sexual assault. All have been denied bail.

Police are looking for five more men known to the father who also allegedly raped and sexually abused the girl. Investigators have a list of names and photographs of some 25 men known to the family that they have been showing to the girl.

"I don't remember any faces. It's all a blur," she told them.

The family lived in a fairly prosperous town in southern India known for its lush hills, clean air and freshwater streams. But the good fortunes of their hometown seemed to have passed her family by.

On that day in September, the school received word from a couple of teachers who lived in the same neighbourhood as the girl.

"There's something wrong with her family and something is going on in her house. Try talking to her," they said.

The school management immediately called a counsellor from a women's assistance group.

Next morning, the counsellor arrived.

They sat face-to-face in the staff room. Upstairs, her mother, unaware of what was going on, attended a routine parent-teacher meeting.

"Tell me," the counsellor said to the girl, "about your family and your life."

They spoke for four hours.

The girl said she was having a tough time at home because her father was jobless. The family could be evicted at any time for not paying rent, she said, and began sobbing.

Then she grew silent. The counsellor told her about the gender classes in her school and how child abuse was common.

"Something is happening in my home also. My father is abusing my mother," the girl interjected.

The counsellor asked if she could share some details.

She said she had once been assaulted by a man who had come to see her mother. Her mother had admonished the man. But then many men came to see her mother when she was away in school, she said.

More and more men began coming to her home. After late drinking sessions, they would sexually abuse her, she said.

The counsellor asked her whether she knew about contraceptives which helped avoid pregnancy and diseases.

"No, no, we use condoms," the girl said.

That was the first time, halfway into the conversation, she admitted to having sex.

After that she told the harrowing story of a lost childhood.

"Men would come and take my mother into the bedroom. I thought this was normal. And then my father pushed me into the room with strangers," she said.

Sometimes her father forced her to take nude pictures of herself and send them to the men who visited her.

Earlier this year, she said, her parents panicked after she missed her periods for three months. They took her to a doctor, who ordered an ultrasound test and prescribed some medicines.

By now, the counsellor was convinced that the girl was a victim of serial rape. She called in child welfare officers, and told the girl they were taking her to a shelter home. She appeared to be unfazed.

Her mother, coming out of her meeting with the teachers, saw her daughter being taken into a car and screamed.

"How can you take my daughter away?"

The counsellor told her they were taking her away because she had "some emotional problems" and needed counselling.

"Who are you to counsel my daughter without my permission?"

Her daughter was already on her way to the home. For the past two months, she has been living there with other girls - all victims of sexual abuse.

India has a shameful record in the sexual abuse of children. The majority of abuses are committed by people known to victims, such as relatives, neighbours and employers, according to official records.

In 2017, the most recent year for which data is available, there were 10,221 rapes of children recorded in India. Crimes against children in the country have been steadily rising in recent years.

Counsellors say horrific stories such as this one are not uncommon. At the shelter where the girl has been staying, there are three girls, aged between 12 and 16, who have been sexually abused by their father.

A counsellor said she had helped transport a heavily pregnant 15-year-old girl - who had been raped by her father - to her exam hall.

"When we asked the girl to surrender the child when it was born, she said, 'Why should I give away my child? This is my father's child. I will bring up the child,'" the counsellor said.

At the shelter, the girl featured in this article slept endlessly for the first few days. Then she scribbled notes on how much she loved her Amma (mother).

Her mother says her daughter "made up this story [of sexual exploitation] because she had been fighting with us and wanted to teach us a lesson".

There was a time, her mother said, when things were not so bad. Her husband sometimes used to make up to 1,000 rupees (about $14; £11) a day in his job.

Now she is the only occupant of an empty house - her husband in prison awaiting trial, her daughter in a shelter.

Saudi's Aramco shares jump in world's biggest ever market debut

Saudi Aramco's stock rose sharply as the world's biggest share sale got underway in Riyadh, rising 10% above the initial public offering price.

Last week the oil giant, which produces more than a tenth of global crude supply, raised $25.6bn (£19.5bn).

Saudi Arabia's royal family is privatising assets as part of a plan to move the kingdom away from its reliance on oil.

The money raised from the sales will be used for non-energy investments.

Today's 10% rise, which is the Riyadh Stock Exchange's daily limit, gives Aramco a market valuation of around $1.88tn.

That easily makes it the world's most valuable listed company but still less than the $2tn targeted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

However it is still the biggest share sale to date, surpassing that of China's Alibaba which raised $25bn in 2014 in New York.

US arrests Mexico's ex-minister, Genaro García Luna in Dallas on drugs charges

A former Mexican security minister has been arrested in the US, charged with taking bribes from a drugs cartel.

Genaro García Luna is accused of allowing the Sinaloa cartel of "El Chapo" Guzman to operate in Mexico in exchange for millions of dollars.

Prosecutors say Mr García Luna gave the cartel safe passage for drug shipments and access to sensitive information.

They say that on two occasions cartel members delivered up to $5m (£3.7m) in two briefcases to him in person.

He has previously denied any wrongdoing.

Mr García Luna, 52, served as public security chief in the administration of President Felipe Calderon between 2006 and 2012.

His arrest in Texas is a major development in Mexican politics.

Mr García Luna was taken into custody in Dallas, Texas, on Monday.

Court documents unsealed on Tuesday in Brooklyn showed he had been charged with cocaine trafficking conspiracy and making false statements.

"García Luna stands accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes from 'El Chapo' Guzman's Sinaloa cartel while he controlled Mexico's Federal Police Force and was responsible for ensuring public safety in Mexico," said US Attorney Richard Donoghue, announcing the arrest.

He was also accused of lying about his criminal past when he applied for US naturalisation in 2018.

The repulsed father, from Udon Thani in north eastern Thailand, described its texture as sticky and stretchy.

"I felt like I wasn't finished defecating, like something was left.

"Turns out there was something sticking out of my bottom," the freelance photographer said.

Pictures show the long tapeworm wriggled up on the toilet.

Katie Price planning to be new Real Housewives star in US TV career relaunch

Katie Price is reportedly planning to launch herself in America in a bid to become their latest reality TV star.

The 41-year-old was recently declared bankrupt and she is hoping that she could bring a version of her reality show, My Crazy Life, to US channels.

Katie allegedly believes she could be the next 'real housewives' star and has flown to New York with on/off boyfriend Kris Boyson, and his mum, in a bid to persuade him that their lives would be better served on the other side of the Atlantic.

Millions of people watch shows like the Real Housewives of New York and Katie reportedly thinks that she belongs among them.

A friend of Katie told The Sun : "Katie doesn’t think America has seen anything like her before and that she could do really well over there.

"Katie also needs a fresh start in the New Year so living somewhere else would really appeal to her."

She has jetted into New York in a bid to show Kris "what an amazing life they could have their together."

So far it has apparently worked as the friend said: "It has opened Kris' eyes up to a new world which was part of the reason for the trip.”

Kris and Katie's relationship has had a bit of a battering in recent weeks, with the strain of bankruptcy proceedings and Katie admitting to cheating on him twice, leaving them very close to ending it all for good.

Getting away from their situation in the UK was regarded as a priority in a bid to heal their relationship.

The friend continued: "Katie and Kris needed to get away from the house, which is a building site and be able to spend some time together.

"Katie has certainly been making a fuss of Kris and they’ve put the romance back in their relationship."

Despite claiming that she is broke, Katie is apparently looking forward to Christmas and is not going to let her financial situation "ruin things for her or for the kids."

She is planning to spend the festive period with Kris at her mum's after she returns from her New York break.

Britney Spears 'going to court to challenge lack of custody time with sons'

Britney Spears is reportedly not happy with the custody arrangements for her sons and is planning to challenge it in court.

The 38-year-old singer is currently at the sharp end of a 70-30 split on time with her ex-husband Kevin Federline and she wants to try and gain more time with Sean Preston, 14, and Jayden, 13.

Us Weekly has reported that Britney will challenge the conditions of the contact in court, where she will ask to have more time with her children.

Over the festive period, a source told the magazine that she will have her sons on Christmas Eve before they head to their father for Christmas Day.

The relationship between Kevin and Britney is pretty much non-existent apart from "everyday co-parenting stuff."

Another source told the magazine that the pair "do not have much of a relationship" and "don't do very much as a family."

The custody arrangement used to be a 50-50 split but was changed in September after reports that Britney's father Jamie allegedly got into an altercation with Sean Preston.

The teenager allegedly got into an argument with his grandfather and then reportedly "locked himself in a room" for his own safety.

Kevin filed a restraining order against the grandparent but this was dismissed by police as no child abuse charges had been filed.

At that point, the court changed the custody to 70-30 in Federline's favour and Britney has 'barely spoken' to her father since then, according to a source.

Bill Cosby's appeal to overturn sexual conviction denied by court

Bill Cosby's appeal to overturn his sexual conviction has been denied.

The 82-year-old entertainer was given a ten-year jail sentence in April after a jury found him guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for the drugging and sexual assault of his one-time friend Andrea Constand.

In October his lawyers began working to overturn the conviction - as they said the judge Steven O'Neill should not have allowed the five additional accusers to testify at his trial.

Yesterday, the appeals court ruled that O'Neill was correct in allowing their testimony - even if they happened 22 years prior to Crosby's assault of Andrea.

The appeal court said, according to NBC News: "Here, the time period in question is substantial, especially in relation to existing case law. Nevertheless, several factors tend to demonstrate" that the value of the "evidence remains strong, despite that substantial time gap."

The court cited: "distinctive similarities between the additional testimony and Cosby's assault of Constand.

"Furthermore, there were multiple prior sexual assaults, not merely one, and all of those prior assaults evidenced the same, signature pattern of misconduct."
Cosby's lawyers have previously taken issue with judge O'Neill's wife being a psychiatrist who works with sexual assault victims.

After a jury found Cosby guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for the drugging and sexual assault of his one-time friend Andrea Constand, O'Neill on Sept. 25 branded him a "predator" and sentenced him to three to 10 years in prison.

The once-beloved comedian, known as America's Dad in the 1980s and 1990s during the run of his hit television sitcom, was marched out of court in shackles and began serving his sentence immediately.

Lagos courts to go digital in 2020 – Attorney-General

As part of measures to ensure speedy dispensation of justice in Lagos, the administration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is to oversee a digital reform of courtrooms in the state.

Speaking during a media parley on Tuesday at the Ministry of Justice, Alausa, Lagos, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), said that the reforms would take place in 2020.

He said the digital reforms would make the Lagos courtrooms first class in Africa.

“We are going to support the judges by using the latest technology to assist them in their work.

“Our goal is that before this administration leaves office, the courts should be completely paperless as well as deploying technology which is available in other parts of the world.

“We do not want to see our judges writing down in longhand again. We also want to ensure that when people go to court, relying on audiovisual evidence will not be a difficult thing.

“This administration wants to ensure that Lagos has the best digitally enhanced courts in Africa.

“The governor is totally committed to doing this and we should be rolling out our plans in the next quarter of 2020,” Onigbanjo said.

Obaseki disowns Ize-Iyamu’s defection rally in Benin

The crisis rocking the Edo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), worsened on Tuesday, as embattled Governor Godwin Obaseki, denied knowledge of a rally planned by the party to hold in Benin City, on Friday.

This is even as the state chairman of the party, Anselm Ojezua, described the supposed rally as provocative and handiwork of unauthorized persons.

According to sources, the mega rally is for receiving a former governorship candidate of the PDP, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and hundreds of his supporters, to the APC.

It was also gathered that the Vice President, Prof. Yomi Osinbajo and the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will be at the rally to receive the defectors.

The Governor, in a chat with journalists after meeting with heads of security agencies in the state at Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said “I have checked with the state APC secretariat and as far as I am concerned, the party has not announced officially that they will be having a rally.”

He said issues of public safety was reviewed at the security meeting, particularly in relation to the yuletide season.

“The issue of public safety is a major concern to us as a government and this being the last security council meeting for the year, we had to put up measures in place to tackle security challenges,” he said.

On his part, Ojezua in a statement on Tuesday, said the purported rally is capable of disrupting peace in the state.

He noted that neither the state governor, Obaseki who is the leader of the APC in Edo State nor other leaders of the party is aware of the purported declaration rally.

He, therefore, urged members of the APC in the state not to have anything to do with the event.

According to him; “The attention of the party has been drawn to an information being circulated by some unauthorised people to the effect that the APC in the state is receiving some new members on Friday 13, December 2019, at Garrick Memorial School, Ekenwan Road, Benin City.”
