Muiz Banire reacts to his and Fowler’s sacking

Pioneer national legal secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Muiz Banire has reacted to his removal as chairman of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari. He also commented on the removal of fellow Lagos man, Babatunde Fowler as chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

Banire who is away in the UK for an educational programme, said his disengagement was not a big deal as it was a part time job. Besides, he has an alternative address.

“My days in AMCON as chairman were dominated by pressure I gladly entertained with all sense of responsibility in order to be able to serve my people. While it had its enticing pomp of “Mr. Chairman” appellation, it was a part-time service with only mandatory nine days of service in a whole year”, he wrote in a weekly column for the Sun newspaper, that was published today.

Interestingly, the senior advocate of Nigeria and commissioner in Lagos for transportation and later environment for almost 11 years, did not mention the change in the statute of AMCON that was being cited as the reason for his removal.

About Fowler, he wrote: “My position on the Fowler issue was simply appreciation of his service and contributions to the nation. In my view, he cannot and must not have any regrets once he is convinced of having discharged his duty meritoriously. The grumbling from the supposed well-wishers underscores the problematic aspect of Nigerians as a people who see appointments into political offices as open sesame to riches and an opportunity for self-enrichment”.

Read his article:

Yesterday on my Twitter handle, I announced that my response on the disengagement from Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) shall be the subject of discussion in my column today. So, where we are! Tuesday, December 10, 2019, my tenure as the chairman of AMCON would seem to have expired upon the nomination of Mr. Edward Adamu as the new chairman of the bad loan vehicle. News about this development came to me while in London in the middle of a crash education programme.

The negatively interesting aspect of it is the lamentations that trailed the announcement by some friends and associates who, in my view, had a disconnect between purpose of service and the relief that naturally accompanies the disengagement of an appointee with an alternative contact address. Barely 24 hours before the presidential nomination of a new chairman for AMCON over which I presided, Mr. Tunde Fowler was replaced in his chairmanship of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office by another appointee of Mr. President. Interestingly, I was disturbed with complaints and murmurs by some people who read lots of insinuations into the development and were apparently in a mourning mood, as if disengagement from a political appointment was tantamount to bereavement.

My position on the Fowler issue was simply appreciation of his service and contributions to the nation. In my view, he cannot and must not have any regrets once he is convinced of having discharged his duty meritoriously. The grumbling from the supposed well-wishers underscores the problematic aspect of Nigerians as a people who see appointments into political offices as open sesame to riches and an opportunity for self-enrichment.

Whereas, in saner climes, political offices are seen as opportunities to serve humanity, to the glory of God, in Nigeria, it is seen as an opportunity for self-enrichment. It is only in Nigeria that friends and “well-wishers” roll out the drums, make uniforms (aso ebi) and rent newspaper pages congratulating a new appointee or a newly elected public servant on his “rare achievement.”

The purpose of this outlandish display of craziness is just to ingratiate themselves with the appointee for him to remember each and every one of them in his “father’s kingdom,” which they consider political appointments to represent.

Representatives from his village, religious congregation, in-laws and several newly self-discovered relatives would bombard his doorstep in celebration of his new status and achievement. No one thinks of challenges the appointee is likely to meet in office or whether he would succeed in his responsibilities or not. At times, such nominees do not even know how to navigate the new terrain.

From this unfortunate moment, demands would start piling up on his back; those whose children and wards have been sent away from school for failing to pay school fees would appoint him an emergency Rockefeller. Those who want to celebrate birthdays, those who want to pay hospital bills and so many more would turn his doorstep to a Father Christmas yard where goodies from public coffers are meant to be shared in unrestrained generosity. The tap of public resources in his care must flow like water from Niagara Falls without care for accountability or any sense of responsibility. Some believe that their search for job over the years has come to a terminal point with their relative having been appointed into a public office.

This belief does not realise that the office into which their kinsman is entering has its fair share of the national workforce, the burden of which probably has been openly calling for downsizing. This is why election or appointment into public office is seen as an opportunity to share the national cake. It is evident and incontestable that, for a people with this kind of mentality, termination of appointment, loss of political office or disengagement from public office in whatever manner is a terrible disaster worse than loss of a child. And that is why many go so fetish and inhuman as to engage in all manner of sacrifices and disorientating mortgage of their spiritual existence to the Devil.

Once an appointee is relieved of his appointment, mournful glares compete on burrowed foreheads, languid expressions of personal losses dominate discussions among beneficiaries or intended beneficiaries of loot from a public office recently lost. Lots of motives, from ethnicity to religion, to personal scores and political intrigues are adduced as reasons why the appointer must have terminated the appointment or disengaged the public office holder. In my situation, messages of consolation and clear condemnation oozed from some mouths the moment it was announced that a new nomination had been made.

It was a terrible distraction as I was struggling to imbibe as much as possible from the highly intellectually resourceful lecturer that was handling the on-going session. Calls came into my phone in torrents. Loads of messages poured into my phone with the constant flashes of light from the mobile gadget constituting a needless distraction until I had to switch it off. I contemplated what could be the problem with my people sympathizing disengagement from office as if it was a deprivation of valuables by armed robbers or loss of an edifice to a raging inferno. What mentality dictated the somber and lugubrious feelings being expressed by some friends save for a few others whose dignifying understanding of political appointment is superb enough to appreciate that it is merely an opportunity to serve and no more? That you were considered worthy to serve the public in an elective or appointive office is an opportunity to give your best to the community to the benefit of the living and in preparation of a decent living for the yet unborn generations. It must not be regarded as a kingship on which someone should expect life tenure. It is a temporary occupation of office that must terminate one day, either scheduled statutorily or otherwise. It is only when we realise this that the humanity in us shall radiate to the uplifting of our society.

It is at such point that our sense of uprightness can compete with that of people of other climes. This can only be guaranteed when politicians and political appointees prepare themselves for self-sustenance in and out of office with what I call an “alternative address.” The concept of alternative address is a legitimate business or vocation from which one can pay one’s bills conveniently without expecting loot from a public office. It is a platform, the proceeds from which can sustain you and your family needs whether you are in office or out of office. This has been my advocacy in the last decade and the earlier the voters appreciate this, the better for our nation.

In fact, as may be recalled, during the resistance to my nomination at inception, I clearly made this point that “I am not jobless and, therefore, not in search of any appointment.” I only owe the nation my service whenever called upon and I have the capacity to deliver.

Having alternative contact address is the only thing that will make you comfortable as not to pander to enticing suggestions of unscrupulous elements who would justify their greed with you-profit-from-where-you-serve mentality and disposition.

It is only this that can shield you from the rapacious tendency to dip fingers of larceny into the public cashbox. You must have an alternative address so that you do not join those you condemned before you had the opportunity to saunter into public office.

My days in AMCON as chairman were dominated by pressure I gladly entertained with all sense of responsibility in order to be able to serve my people. While it had its enticing pomp of “Mr. Chairman” appellation, it was a part-time service with only mandatory nine days of service in a whole year.

Man on death row who slit prison supervisor's throat is executed by lethal injection

A convict who slit a prison supervisor's throat while incarcerated has been executed by lethal injection in Texas.

Travis Runnels, 46, was convicted more than a decade ago of killing a prison boot factory supervisor because he was upset he had to work as a janitor.

He was pronounced dead at 7.26 pm local time at the state's death chamber in Huntsville for the murder of 40-year-old Stanley Wiley, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said in a statement.

Runnels is the 22nd inmate in the United States and the ninth in Texas to be executed in 2019.

On Friday, Runnels' attorneys filed a request with the Supreme Court, asking justices to halt the execution so arguments could be heard challenging the testimony of a prosecution witness who said Runnels would be a threat to prison society.

During his 2005 trial, Runnels pleaded guilty to capital murder. His defense attorney told the jury during closing arguments that Runnel did so as his "first act of contrition," but jurors still sentenced him to death.

In the winter of 2003, Runnels worked as a janitor at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison in Potter County, where he was serving up to a 70-year sentence for convictions related to two burglaries and an aggravated robbery.

During his time in prison, Runnels was accused of assaulting guards, including throwing human waste at them on two occasions.

On the morning of Jan. 29, 2003, Runnels was upset he was not transferred to become a barber as he had requested, telling a fellow inmate "he was going to kill someone," court records showed.

Runnels also said he would kill Wiley if Wiley said anything to him that morning, the records said.

After telling two other inmates that morning of similar plans, Runnels came up from behind Wiley and cut his throat with a trimming knife. Wiley died hours later, according to court documents.

Maina hides assets using son Faisal’s name - witness

An EFCC operative, Mohammed Goji has revealed how Abdulrasheed Maina, former Pension Reform Task Team boss, illegally acquired several properties using his son, Faisal’s name.

Goji, who is a Principal Detective Superintendent with the anti-graft agency, was also the second prosecution witness (PW2) in the ongoing trial of Faisal.

Goji, a member of Pension Fraud Team of EFCC that investigated Maina, gave the narrative while giving evidence on Wednesday before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He said that the Pension Fraud Team was constituted in 2010 to conduct investigation into pension accounts audit at the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation as well as the Police.

“During that time, Abdulrasheed Maina was the chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, established to restructure the pension office.

“He also became a subject of investigation. It was in the course of the investigation of Abdulrasheed Maina that the name of the defendant (Faisal) featured prominently.

“We investigated Maina’s money laundering deals, which included movement of funds from the police pension account and the accounts of the pension office of the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation to corporate entities as payment for biometric enrollment.

“The monies were also allegedly meant for the payment of collective allowances and payment of contracts, which were fraudulent,” he said.

He added that in the course of the investigation, a letter was sent to Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to request for information on some of the companies they came across.

“They obliged us with copies of incorporation, Form C02 and other documents, which revealed the directors of the companies and their shareholders.

“Also, we sent letters of investigation activities to banks and requested for details of accounts and they obliged us with these documents,” he said.

The EFCC operative explained further that sometimes in September 2019, the EFCC received an intelligence report that Abdulrasheed Maina was in the country but they did not know where he was.

“So, the EFCC liased with the DSS to assist us in effecting the arrest of Maina.

“He was eventually arrested along with the defendant (Faisal) on Sep. 29, 2019.

“The DSS handed them over to us on Oct. 2, 2019 along with some items recovered from them, which included cars and personal belongings in suitcases, handbags and Bagco bags.

“We granted them an opportunity to invite their lawyers because we were directed to record their statements.

“On Oct. 3, Faisal was interviewed in the presence of his lawyer. His statement was recorded in his own handwriting and signed.

“Additional statements were recorded about three or four times later. He also filled his declaration of assets form in the presence of his lawyer,” Goji said.

The witness added that during the investigation, they came across an account owned by Alhaji Faisal Abdullahi Farms, with the UBA, with Faisal and Abdulrasheed Maina as co-signatories.

He added that the account was operated by Abdulrasheed Maina, with further investigation revealing that the account was funded with the proceeds of illegality.

Badger found butchered to death in Satanic “Jack The Ripper-style” killing

A “Jack The Ripper-style” killing of a harmless badger has left locals concerned.

The animal was found butchered to death on a farm in West Cornwall - an aggressive attack that has left the area shocked.

West Cornwall Hunt Saboteurs posted a photograph of the badger on its Facebook page, stating the animal had its stomach slit open front to back with its intestines wrapped around its mouth in a “ritual-style killing”.

The incident has been reported to police.

The terrible discovery was made on a farm near the hamlet of Sheffield, near Penzance .

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We have been made aware of a report of a dead badger being located on farmland in St Just on Saturday, December 7.”

A spokesman for the group said: “Our badger expert who has seen it all said this is the worst thing he’s seen in all his years.”

The saboteurs stressed that the badger wasn’t killed by a local hunt.

A former member of West Cornwall Badger Group said: "I have been involved with 'badger rescue' for over 20 years in West Cornwall and have the unfortunate experience of seeing at first hand injuries to these animals.

"Sometimes they are inflicted by other badgers, sometimes caused by road traffic accidents and other times gunshot or snare wounds . In all of these years I have never something so depraved such as this.

Another young boy writes Santa as his homeless family face Christmas in emergency accommodation

A young boy has written a heartbreaking letter to Santa as his homeless family face Christmas in emergency accommodation.

The family-of-four have been living in a cramped hotel room in Ennis, Ireland, and say their battle with homelessness is "destroying their lives".

Margaret Maughan is staying there with her husband Kevin and two children – Kevin, seven, and six-year-old Shakira.

Young Kevin is looking forward to Santa returning to the emergency accommodation after his visit last year, reports the Irish Mirror.

His simple letter reads: “Santa, my name is Kevin, please come to the hotel again with Batman toys.”

Ms Maughan explained the family has no cooker or fridge in their room.

This means it is more expensive as fresh items such as sandwiches and yoghurts have to be bought and prepared for school lunches every day.

In the evenings, with nowhere to cook, usually unhealthy takeaway meals have to be bought in.

Ms Maughan said: “My little girl is six years old and was always a happy, bubbly, healthy child, but since becoming homeless she’s been nervous, anxious, sad and very hard to deal with.

“She has now been accepted by CAMHS [Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services] and is awaiting an assessment.

“My little boy is seven and ever since becoming homeless he has got severe asthma from staying in cold, damp rooms. He is on two inhalers and a nasal spray which he was never on before.

“My husband has got severe depression and has tried to kill himself three times in the last two months as this is just getting too much to deal with now.

“I am trying my best to hold everything together, but I just can’t keep it going much longer. We are really and truly struggling with being homeless. It is destroying our lives.”

“I am a mother of three. We have been living in a one-bedroom B&B accommodation for 16 months.

“This is our second Christmas here. My son has autism. “He hits, kicks and spits. We have breakfast in the morning here in the B&B.

“But I can’t bring him to the dining room for breakfast because of his behaviour. We all sit on the floor in the bedroom to eat.

“We have no access to the kitchen so we eat takeaway.”

Heartbreakingly, these are just a fraction of the shocking cases which highlight the real state of the housing and homelessness in Ireland.

Other horror stories emerging involve a homeless man with cancer, a property with five people in a bed and three students kicked out of a converted shed at the back of a garden for complaining about paying €500 each a month.

ECOWAS court dismisses Kanu's suit against FG seeking $800m compensation for 'torture, assault, inhuman treatment'

The ECOWAS Court of Justice has dismissed a suit brought by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, alleging torture, assault, inhuman treatment and the violation of his property rights by the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Kanu, who is also the Director of Radio Biafra, registered under the regulatory laws of the United Kingdom and the United Nations, demanded $800 million in compensation.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Dupe Atoki, leading a three-man panel, held that Kanu had failed to prove the claims and dismissed the request for compensation.

The judge also ruled that Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest and detention were not unlawful and arbitrary as claimed by the Plaintiff.

While the Court acknowledged that Mr. Kanu had the legal capacity to approach the Court for the alleged violation of his human rights, it adjudged that without a mandate, he lacked the legal personality to represent the IPOB before the Court.

Rob Kardashian appears to be making his intentions with a sexy Instagram model extremely clear.

Kim, Kourtney and Khloe's little brother hasn't publicly dated anyone since his rather disastrous relationship with Blac Chyna, who is the mother of his daughter Dream, three.

Thank God! Nigerians to now have light as electricity workers end strike

Nigerian electricity workers blamed for the collapse of the National Grid have suspended their strike.

In an email to customers today, Eko Electricity Distribution Company(EKEDC) announced the suspension.

“Dear customer, NUEE has ended its strike. Our offices & payment channels are open for business. Thank you for your patience & understanding”.

On Wednesday, NUEE members on Wednesday barred the Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, from gaining access into his office in protest against the dismissal of their colleagues without payment of terminal benefits among other grievances.

The workers picketed the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Power, Abuja, disrupting the day’s work.

They also denied personnel of the ministry access to their offices.

In different statements, DisCos said the blackout being experienced across the country was as a result of the industrial action by electricity workers.

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), the country’s largest power distributor said the action has led to a nationwide shut down of electricity installations and has resulted in the disruption of service across its network.”

“We sincerely apologise for all inconveniences to our esteemed customers. Power will be restored immediately the strike is called off.”

FG orders probe of DSS Abuja court invasion

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said the Federal Government has ordered a probe into the invasion of a Federal High Court last Friday by operatives of the Department of State Service.

Malami spoke to reporters at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, after visiting the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho. He also visited the President, National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Benedict Kanyip.

Fielding questions from reporters, he said he did not visit the Chief Judge over Sowore’s case but to congratulate him on his confirmation by the Senate as the substantive Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

Asked if he was not appalled by the DSS’ conduct, Malami said, “Whatever affects the integrity of the court is a worrisome issue for us.

“I can never be preemptive of an incident over which I was not a live witness to.”

“But one thing I am certain of is that the government has put in place mechanism for investigation of the reported incident.

“So, I would not like to be preemptive in terms of a conclusion, one way or the other, without allowing the consummation and conclusion of the investigation process.”

Disgraced film mogul, Harvey Weinstein strikes $25m deal with his accusers

Disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein has struck a "tentative" deal with dozens of his alleged victims, according to a report.

The New York Times says the proposed settlement of $25m (£18.9m) would end nearly every lawsuit filed by those who say they are victims of sexual assault by the former Hollywood producer.

And Weinstein would not have to apologise, or pay from his own bank account as insurers representing the Weinstein Company would cover the settlement's cost, the report says.

More than 30 actresses and Weinstein employees, who have sued him for accusations ranging from sexual misconduct to rape, have agreed to the deal, according to half a dozen lawyers.

A court would then have to approve the settlement before it is paid out.

Weinstein is also facing a criminal trial in which he faces five charges, all of which he denies, including two of rape, and insists that all of his sexual encounters were consensual.

The charges relate to two women, although more than 70 others have made similar claims against him.

Video of Boko Haram killing soldiers fake – Army

The Nigerian Army says the recent video clip allegedly released by Boko Haram terrorists portraying capture and killing of some Nigerian soldiers was the fabrication of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, in a statement on Wednesday said that the video was not an occurrence that took place in Nigeria.

He urged the public and personnel of Nigerian army, especially those in the North East theatre of operation, to disregard the video.

According to him, it is a video concocted to cause disunity and fragmentation of Nigeria.

“Accordingly, the call by one Simon Ekpa, (the principal actor in the clip), calling on soldiers of South East extraction presently serving in the North East to desert the Army and return to Biafra proved it.

“Also, the call on South Easterners not to join the Nigerian Army is an obvious indication of the essence and objective of the masterminds of this fake video which should be discountenanced by the public.

“Meanwhile the leadership of the Nigerian Army wish to also reiterate its unflinching commitment to sustain the war against terrorism.

“It shall not be deterred by the evil machinations or propagandist activities of mischievous persons whose main interest is the disunity of our beloved nation,” he said.

Any African is now free to enter Nigeria without a visa

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) said the Federal Government has approved that all Africans could come to Nigeria without Visa from January 2020.

The Comptroller General, NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede, disclosed this at the inauguration of the Africa–Frontex Intelligence Community (AFIC) on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The announcement would be made soon by the President of the Federation.

”But we cannot succeed without a tool like AFIC. This tool is key if we want to implement an effective free movement across our border.

“The tool is actually coming at the right time. AFIC would help African countries especially Nigeria that want to open its border for all Africans to enter at will. And now that tool is available, it would make the work easier for us,” he said.

Kenyan court grants bail to Nairobi governor charged with corruption

Kenyan court granted bail on Wednesday to the Nairobi County governor charged with multi-million dollar corruption in one of the most high profile cases in the government’s anti-graft push. The move was opposed by the prosecution, which argued Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was likely to interfere with witnesses and obstruct the investigation.

Sonko, an elected official from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party known for his flamboyant lifestyle, was arrested on Friday.

He has denied charges of conspiracy to commit corruption, conflict of interest, failure to comply with procurement laws, unlawful acquisition of public property and laundering.
