Don’t borrow to celebrate Christmas - Wunmi Toriola

Actress and new mother, Wunmi Toriola, has advised celebrities in the country not to put themselves into debt in the name of celebrating Christmas.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, Toriola said, “Sometimes, celebrities are pressured by fans to look good but one can still look good without breaking the bank. I always look good without trying to break the bank or even borrow. There should be a limit to everything. You can still look good in whatever you have. Cut your coat according to your size and don’t go borrowing. It’s always better to enter the New Year without any debt.”

The actress also stressed that there hasn’t been any major changes in her life since she became a mother. She said, “I have not really changed asides from the fact that there is now more demand on my time. I am still the same fun-loving person; nothing is going to change as such.”

On how she would be spending the Yuletide, the actress said, “I’ll be spending Christmas at home with my family, especially my baby.”

Nine-year-old pupil drowns in Cross River

A nine-year-old primary school pupil in Calabar, Cross River State, simply named Christian, has drowned in a swampy river close to Ibesikpo Street by Ambo Street in Calabar South.

Until Thursday morning when the tragedy occurred, Christian lived with his aunt on Ambo Street.

The boy drowned when he was allegedly sent to fetch water from the river in company with some boys who were said to have taken a dip.

Eyewitnesses said after the boys jumped into the river to bathe and later came out, Christian did not as the river swept him away.

An alarm was raised and a search party and divers searched everywhere but could not find him.

A neighbour, Ibanga Peter, said the boy’s body was afloat later that evening.

He said, “It was when the water brought back the body that the search party and divers were able to remove it.”

He also said the parents of the boy were living separately and that the father had travelled to Benin in Edo State.

Peter said Chritians’ father had been informed about the incident and he said his son should not be buried until he arrives.

It was gathered that the aunt denied sending the boy to the river to fetch water.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo said the incident had yet to be reported to the police.

Student, 17, is jailed for 16 years for urging her besotted boyfriend to 'prove his love' by killing his ex-girlfriend

A college student who urged her besotted boyfriend to murder his ex-girlfriend during a macabre plot 'to prove himself' was jailed today for 16 years.

Sarah Mohamed, 17, loitered outside the victim's home in Openshaw, Manchester for two hours while she waited for her boyfriend, Rhett Carty-Shaw, also 17, to kill the mother of his child.

She sent more than 50 text messages to encourage him to carry out the brutal attack in May earlier this year including one that read: 'Why you taking so long? Hurry up and do it.'

Today, the pair were both jailed for 16 years.

Mohamed had first plotted the murder after she discovered that her boyfriend was continuing his relationship with the victim, 17-year-old Imam Nasir.

Manchester Crown Court heard during the trial that she had been left on 'incensed' and 'felt humiliated'.

She proceeded to end her relationship with him and said that he had 'let her down' and that she 'cannot trust him'.

But Carty-Shaw was upset about the relationship coming to an end and arranged to meet with Mohamed at lunchtime the day before the attack in an attempt to talk her round.

She applied make-up to her neck to fake strangulation and closed her eyes so that he could take a photo but when she opened her eyes she saw him holding a knife.

Miss Nasir tried to call 999 as well as one of her friend's but he prevented her from doing so.

She instructed him to leave and tried to push him down the stairs and out of the house into the garden which is when Carty-Shaw unleashed extreme violence.

He inflicting numerous blows that left her with wounds to her face, neck and armpit plus three to her back and was lucky to escape with her life.

Carty-Shaw left the scene shortly after and made his way to his Mohamed who was waiting outside.
The pair talked and embraced after returning to Mohamed's home before he left and she returned inside the property.

Carty-Shaw was arrested a short time later while standing at a bus stop close to his co-defendant's address.

Nigerian woman jailed in UK over £114K benefits fraud

A Nigerian woman, Olusola Owoeye has been jailed for two years in the UK for falsely claiming over £114,000 after saying she was homeless while renting out her own house.

Forty-nine year-old Owoeye, a mother of three, bought her own home before claiming she had been made homeless and was then given a flat by her local council, a court heard.

She then rented out her original property – which she had purchased with a fraudulent mortgage – charging tenants up to £820 a month.

Owoeye is thought to be the first person in London to be convicted of fraud after receiving payments while under ‘no recourse to public funds’ (NRPF) immigration status. She pocketed more than £114,000 over five years.

She may have to sell her home to pay back money to Bexley Council in south-east London, the Mail Online reported on Saturday.

She was found guilty of three charges of fraud following a four-day trial at Woolwich Crown Court last month.

She was subsequently jailed for two years by Judge Jonathan Mann QC, who told her: ‘There is only one reason you did what you did and this is because you are greedy. For you this was money for nothing.’

Oyo government reaction on Lagos-Ibadan rail track

The Oyo State Government as described the level of work at the Ibadan Inland Dry Port at Akinyele Local Government in Ibadan and the ongoing construction of Lagos-Ibadan railway track as satisfactory.

The Director-general, Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency, Hon. Segun Ogunwuyi made this assertion today when he embarked on inspection of the two projects.

Ogunwuyi, alongside the officials of Nigeria Shippers Council (NSC) and the Railway Corporation of Nigeria (RCN) took a ride of the standard rail from Ibadan to Lagos to ascertain level of work done after which they visited the Inland Dry Port at Akinyele.

He added that the two projects would positively affect economic activities and standard of living of the people of the state, as they would provide job opportunities for the youths while the rail transport would ensure easy movement of people and goods at a cheap cost.

According to him, “We have taken a train trip to see the level of work done towards Lagos and back. We moved to the Ibadan Inland Dry Port as well and I can say the level of work done is satisfactory. These two projects are commendable as they are going to have a lasting positive effect on our people.

“You can imagine the number of people that will be directly and indirectly engaged in the activities of the Inland Dry Port and the consequential economic impact. We all know also that rail transport is the cheapest. It will afford our people to move to and from Lagos with less cost, while goods will be transported with ease as cargo rail will be there to haul goods.

“Look also at the relief that will be there for the roads that have been overburdened by movement of heavy trucks and thereby make the roads quickly get spoilt”.

Ogunwuyi reiterated that Oyo State would continue to nurse the good relationship between the state and the Nigeria Shippers’ Council so as to achieve the desired economic transformation, targeted by the state government.

The Ondo State Police Command, on Thursday, said it had arrested no fewer than 10 persons for looting the property of a church, the Sotitobire Praising Chapel, in Akure, which was torched on Wednesday.

The police said the suspects were arrested in connection with stealing of the church property during the violence.

The church was burnt down by irate youths in the Oshinle area of Akure in protest against the disappearance of a one-year-old boy, Gold Kolawole, from the church during a Sunday service last month.

Apart from the church, houses, vehicles and other properties belonging to the religious institution were also burnt by the protesters.

Three people lost their lives in the crisis, including a policeman, whose identity has yet to be revealed.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed to Punch Metro on Thursday that 10 persons had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said, “We have arrested 10 persons. While the violent crisis was going on, they were busy looting the property of the church. We even recovered some of the church’s property from them.

“Some of them were using vehicles to take the items away when we caught them. We will arrest more of those looters.”

Woman kills self after son, 11, steals her money

A 45-year-old woman from Mugai Village in Malava, Kakamega County, Kenya on Tuesday, December 17, killed herself after her 11-year-old son allegedly stole her Ksh500.

Hanna Mukangai allegedly took poison after she found the money missing from her wardrobe, and immediately suspected that her last-born child was behind the theft.

Upon asking the boy and his elder siblings who had stolen her money, Mukangai did not receive a response confirming her suspicion. When she stepped out of the house and returned later, she found the money had been placed where it had been stolen from.

Mum's heartbreak as daughter, 17, takes her own life

A grieving mum has told of her heartbreak over her 17-year-old daughter, who took her own life at a mental health hospital.

Staff at Huntercombe Hospital, near Norwich, were supposed to check on Mia Titheridge, 17, every 15 minutes because she had been deemed a high-risk patient.

But when the suicidal teen, from Leeds, was found unresponsive in her room in the early hours of March 19, 2017, no-one had checked on her for almost an hour.

An inquest heard that Mia had brought a ligature and alcohol back to the hospital after a home visit, but staff didn't find the items during searches.

Her devastated mum, Tori Titheridge, told LeedsLive that the death of vulnerable Mia "could have been prevented" and she might still be alive today if she had been at a facility closer to home.

Ms Titheridge said the family objected when Mia was moved from a hospital in Sheffield to Huntercombe, about 170 miles from their home in Leeds, in December 2016.

Mia, who had made several previous attempts on her life, was moved because she was deemed a high risk to herself following several self-harm incidents.

At November's inquest, a coroner in Norwich found that Mia died after staff failed to adequately respond to the threat of suicide and failed to carry out frequent observations on the night she was found.

Ms Titheridge said: "Listening to the evidence around why she died has been heart-breaking but what is even worse is that we are left with the feeling that Mia’s death could have been prevented."

She added: "We were against Mia being moved because of the distance. She was going to be moved to a place where she would be isolated and alone, hundreds of miles from her family and friends who could offer her the support she needed.

“Mia was terrified when she was transferred. We just didn’t see how this would help with her rehabilitation.

“The last time I saw Mia she thanked me for a lovely weekend. Little did I know that would be the last time I saw my beautiful daughter.

Kidnappers kill gang member for fleeing with N5m ransom

Suspected kidnappers, 28-year-old Best Kevwe Iweh and Emmanuel Tomson (30), have reportedly murdered a member of their gang, Raymond Enahon.

Iweh and Tomson were arrested by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) for the murder.

According to the police, the suspects, on August 19, 2019, murdered Enahon for fleeing with N5 million ransom, which the gang had earlier extorted from a victim’s family.

After fleeing with the money, Enahon bought a Lexus ‘Jeep’ and lavished the rest on his numerous girlfriends.

IRT operatives later found Enahon’s remains in a shallow grave at Obiaruku village in Delta State. The operation was led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, who is the national head of the IRT units.

According to sources, Kyari and his men launched investigation into the activities of the kidnappers following a directive from the IG, Mohammed Adamu.

It was further learnt that Enahon’s body was exhumed after Iweh and Tomson were arrested. The suspects led IRT team to the shallow grave to recover Enahon’s body.

A police source said: “The downfall of the gang started after IRT operatives, on the instruction of the IG, went to Delta State on the trail of a notorious kidnapping gang, led by Best Kevwe Iweh. The gang, who is a native of Oria Abaraka in Delta State, was successfully arrested. He is a notorious kidnapper and had been terrorising Delta State. The second suspect, Emmanuel Tomson, was arrested on August 18.

“Both suspects have confessed to several kidnappings, including the kidnapping of a former finance officer in Delta State in August 2018. They also admitted to kidnapping and killing Raymond Enahon, their gang member. Raymond bought a Lexus RS 330 from N5 million ransom realised from one of their kidnappings.

“Raymond collected the ransom and fled. They confirmed that Raymond bought a Lexus from the money and spent the remaining part of the ransom with his girlfriends. According to the suspects, they lured Raymond somewhere and killed him. After killing Raymond, they sold the jeep for N1.8 million.”

Man who 'helped Tupac fake his death' faked his own to prove rapper never died

A man who claimed he helped Tupac fake his death has come back from the grave to reveal he faked his own - and says that proves the rapper is still alive too.

In December last year, it was reported that Michael Nice had died just days before he was due to release evidence that proved Tupac is still alive.

Michael, who was Tupac's former bodyguard, made headlines when he claimed Tupac had been smuggled into Cuba with the help of former President Fidel Castro after the drive by shooting that police said claimed his life.

Now, Michael has revealed that he faked his own death.

In a video posted to YouTube, he says that he did what he did to evade his enemies.

He says: "My name's Michael Nice. I faked my death on the 18th of December, 2018 and I'm here today, back from the dead to show why and how I faked my death.

"I'm going to put the record straight."

Speaking from an unknown location, he continues: "I know it's a shock to all the people who know me but I'm back, I'm back to explain everything. I confess I faked my death and I feel quit ashamed about it but it had to be done and I'm here now to explain the reasons why."

Michael says the fact that he faked his own death proves that he also helped Tupac fake his death because he's got the "experience" required to pull it off.

He says: "I've done it again with myself. It proves that I've got those capabilities."

Michael also says he had been receiving threats and that if he hadn't faked his death when he did he would have been dead by now anyway.

Michael says he arranged for an ambulance to collect him after he faked his death and that he'd used a magic trick he learned as a youngster to stop his pulse so that when a paramedic checked him they believed he was dead.

He says his "body" was taken to the hospital and that his contacts in the funeral home business arranged to pick him up and switch him out for an actual dead body which was taken to the morgue.

He says he then made his escape and that he couldn't believe how smoothly it all went.

Michael goes on: "I laid low for a year and I'm back now to tell my story, put things straight and get on with the mission.

"There's only one thing I can guarantee out of all of this, it doesn't matter whether you believe it or not, retribution is coming."

Ondo Pastor arrested over missing child sues DSS, demands N100 compensation

Just after his church, Sotitobire Miracle Centre in Akure, Ondo State, was set ablaze by an angry mob over claims that the corpse of a one-year-old boy, Eniola Kolawole, who went missing on November 10 during a service at the place had been dug out from a section of the auditorium, Pastor Alfa Babatunde has dragged the Department of State Services to a Federal High Court sitting in Akure, over his arrest and continued detention by the secret police.

Babatunde in the suit filed by his counsel, Akinyemi Omoware, said his continued detention by the DSS without being charged to court was an abuse and violation of his fundamental human rights.

He noted that he had been arrested for over eight days and had remained in leg chains in DSS custody without food.

Joined in the suit filed are the Director-General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi, Emmanuel Anaobi, Isaac Babalola and Remi Oluwalogbon.

The applicant prayed the court to restrain the five respondents and their agents, servants, subordinates or any person(s) taking instructions from them from engaging in any further act of arrest, detention and violation of his right to liberty and or dignity of human person.

Pastor Babatunde is also asking for N100m for the violation of his fundamental human rights.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit.
