Fayemi urges FG to ban imported ‘Aso-Oke’ fabric

The wife of Ekiti State governor, Bisi Fayemi, has urged the Federal Government to ban imported ‘Aso-Oke’ fabric and revive the nation’s textile industry to boost sustainable economic growth.

‘Aso Oke’ is a hand-woven cloth created by the Yoruba people, which means “top cloth” in the English language, denoting cloth of high status.

However, Fayemi made the call to ban the importation of Aso Oke fabric during the 2019 Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN) on Saturday in Lagos.

“I will be a hypocrite to say that we should ban all fabrics because I do wear imported fabrics every now and then.

“But when it comes to Aso-oke that I know that our women in our local communities toil at to do; and do not have the capacity to produce to scale, instead of investing in that capacity, we are acquiring a situation that others are coming to rip off our intellectual property.

“So, I join others to call for a ban on imported Aso-oke from China,” Fayemi said.

According to her, Africa fashion is all about identity, self-love, dignity, attitude, and ownership to preserve its culture, heritage and connection to the international community.

LASU set to get first hostel after 36 years

Students and staff of the Lagos State University (LASU) are about to witness the construction of an 8,272 unit of hostels for the first time in thirty-six years.

This move is the first of its kind since the creation of the institution in the Ojo area of Lagos state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement with six private property developers to deliver the project in the next 18 months, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Gboyega Akosile.

The deal which will lead to the construction of six blocks of Hall of Residence was wrapped under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) policy of the State.

Although the concessions will run for 35 years, it is expected that 30 percent of the school’s 26,000 student-population will be served when finally completed and delivered in 2021.

“The partnership we just sealed with the six private investors is strategic, because it is going to strengthen our capacity as a Government to scale up education quality and bring about improved academic performance of students.

“It will also help LASU in terms of global rating and outlook. We are using this model as a test case, which governments from other parts of the country will come and emulate. I believe we can deliver on this project and set a precedent that will change the course of tertiary education for good,” he stated.

I met boy who abducted and defiled me on Facebook – 15-year-old girl

The police in Lagos State have arrested a 17-year-old boy, identified simply as Ojo, for the alleged abduction and defilement of a 15-year-old girl.

Ojo reportedly picked the girl, Bola (not real name) from her parents’ home in Ikeja, Lagos and took her to his father’s residence, where they spent the night together.

City Round learnt that the next day, Ojo and Bola checked into a hotel and spent over a week before the girl was found and Ojo arrested by the police.

After much pleading by his family, the boy wrote an undertaking that he would stay away from the girl, but returned to her about two months later and took her away for days.

A manhunt was launched for him by the police at the Mosalasi division and he was rearrested. The case was consequently transferred to the gender unit at the police headquarters in Ikeja.

The senior secondary school pupil told the police that she became submissive to Ojo after he hypnotised her, adding that he sexually harassed her to the point that she became tired.

She stated, “I met him on Facebook. He traced me to my house on September 16 when my parents were not around. He told me he is a yahoo boy (an Internet fraudster) and that he has made a lot of money. He brought out a loaf of bread and biscuits and forced me to eat the biscuit. After eating it, I didn’t know what I was doing again. I told him my mum had N500,000 in her drawer and he asked me to bring it which I did.

“He then took me to his house where I slept that night with his father and sister. The next morning, he took me to a hotel. On September 27, I was found and taken back home. After one month, he came to my house and I reported him to my parents. They then reported to the police.

“On November 12, he came to my mum’s shop and gave me a phone. He came back on a bike and took me to a house where he kept me for one week. He then took me to another house where his aunt and her husband stay. He forcefully had sex with me.  He also inserted his fingers in my private parts. He would ask me to suck his private parts and beat me if I refused.

“I became very tired and lay on the bed. His aunt came to meet me and said she didn’t want police trouble. She put me on a bus which dropped me near my school.”

Bola, who said she was a victim of circumstance, explained that one of her teachers saw her unconscious and rushed her to hospital.

“I have never forced myself on a man before. I have been a very good girl with good records in school,” she added.

Ojo, in his statement, however, said he did not force the girl into the relationship, claiming that she ran away from home of her own volition.

The teenager, who just completed his secondary school, said they started dating each other in August 2019.

He said, “She came to me one day and said her mother had sent her packing and that she had nowhere to go. So I had to accommodate her. The next day, her uncle came to my house and warned me to stay away from her and he took her home. After one week, she called me and we started talking again.

“On September 16, she ran away from home and came to meet me. She said her mum beat her but I didn’t know she was lying. We went to a hotel where we stayed together for 11 days. We were later picked up by the police and taken to the station. They asked me to write an undertaking that I would stay away from her.

“I was at home one evening with my friends when I saw her coming towards me. I was shocked and asked her what she came to do. She said her mum saw a phone with her; collected it and beat her. I told her that I have nothing to do with her again because of the undertaking I had written. She left and since then I have not seen her.”

Bola’s mother stated that her daughter had told her she was going to school on September 16. She said she became worried when Bola did not return and she contacted the school, but was told that the girl was absent.

The woman said, “We started looking for her with the assistance of the police. On September 27, police tracked her down and arrested her with the boy (Ojo). Because of the intervention of his family, I decided to let go of the case and he wrote an undertaking that he would not come near my daughter again.

“But some weeks later, he started coming to my house secretly. When I knew, I reported back to the police. The police officer invited the boy and his father but they refused to honour the invitation.

“On November 12, Ojo came to my house on a bike. Before I could come out, he  abducted my daughter  and took her to an unknown place. She stole my N500,000 which they spent in the hotel.”

Ojo was subsequently brought before an Ogba magistrates’ court on two counts of abduction and defilement by a police prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi.

The charges read in part, “That you, Ojo (surname withheld), on November 12, 2019, around 8pm, at Ikeja, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully abduct a 15-year-old girl out of the custody of her parents, thereby committing an offence punishable Under Section 141 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

“That you, Ojo, did unlawfully defile a 15-year-old girl contrary to Section 27 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till February 20, 2019.

Man climbs mast in Taraba, threatens suicide and not to get down excepts he sees TB Joshua who is in Lagos

A yet to be identified man has threatened to commit suicide by climbing a telecommunications mast.

The incident occurred on Friday in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital in the north-eastern part of the country.

According to eyewitnesses, the man was seen approaching the mast with chains around his waist without knowing that he had the intention of climbing the mast.

Speaking to Channels Television, two persons – Mohammed Aminu and Suleiman Musa – explained that they suddenly discovered that the man was already at the peak of the mast.

They added that he started shouting and throwing down papers with a short message entitled ‘To Whom It May Concern’.

“I did not know when he climbed the mast; I’m the guardsman here,” said Aminu who added, “This is the first of its kind.”

“He was throwing down some papers which were picked by some persons,” the guardsman narrated.

The man, however, made a demand that he would only terminate the suicide mission if the founder of Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet T.B. Joshua, intervened in his case.

One of the papers read, ”People of God, I need your prayer for my safety. As Zacchaeus climbed the sycamore tree to see Jesus Christ out of the crowd, fortunately, he got his salvation from God.

“After so many revelations about SCOAN, I am not coming down from this place until prophet T.B. Joshua asks me to come down. This is my last hope even if it is the last thing that I will achieve in life, so be it.

“Please and please prophet of God, help and deliver me for God’s sake.”

Meanwhile, security operatives have arrived at the scene in an attempt to bring the man down in the dark without any iota of light.

This strategy, according to the team, is to avoid suspicion by the victim and prevent him from jumping off the mast.

PDP must change its name to win future elections - Okupe

Former spokesperson of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to change its name if it intends to win future general elections in the country.

Okupe gave the advice in an article posted on social media yesterday. According to him, the PDP suffered major setbacks in 2019 but it can redeem itself if it changes its name amongst other things.

FOR THE LOVE OF PDP.

Pdp has suffered major and serious setbacks in 2019. In spite of this it is still the strongest and most resilient party in the country. The present national executives have performed very well in this very trying and daunting if not perilous circumstances.

The presidential flag bearer has demonstrated commendable courage, experience and commitment and deployed personally unprecedented resources in the pursuit of our collective noble objective of taking over power from Apc.

The Apc is not our match. They are bullish and brutal in their political pursuits. But our position of not subjugating national interest and unity to parochial and selfish desires is not something we should regret.

A few individuals also did us proud. Former Senate President Dr.Bukola Saraki and some of his colleagues in the national assembly, including but not limited to, senator Dino Melaye deserve our commendation. So also are former governor ayo fayose and Femi fanikayode. Both Performed as self appointed spokespersons for the opposition in critical times.

Now as we go into the new year and look forward to 2023 we must prepare for a new begining.
I recommend that the party and its leadership consider the following:

1. The party must urgently rebrand and take up a new name and a new constitution if it intends to win general elections in the future.

2. The leadership of the party should cease from been allocated to the state governors. Government and party must be separate to avoid authoritanianism and corruption.

3. Every state branch must work strenuously to find within their respective states at least 25/30,000 financial members who can contribute minimum of N1000 per month to the party. This is apart from monthly contribution of members at the ward levels. This will guarantee collective ownership and independence.

4. Any party official that collects bribe from an aspirant should automatically lose his office once found guilty by a disciplinary committee.

5.Campaign organisations for all aspirants at all levels, can only come into existence 6 months before the primaries of the particular elections. All aspirants at all levels should after submission of expression of interest forms, join the party executives and work with them to build and strengthen the party for victory at the elections.

6. The party must compulsorily agree on some critical national issues which must be clearly stated in the new constitution. This will include:
Federalism, Restructuring, role of religion in governance including Sharia, state police, Revenue sharing, issues relating to Herdsmen, Ruga, immigration, indigene and settlers issues, power rotation, federal character, upholding the rule of law, economic policy, foreign relations policies including relationship with Isreal, and the  middle east, IOC etc.

7. Lingering crisis must be addressed. President Jonathan must be reconciled with Dickson. Also Dickson and the leadership of the party in Bayelsa State.

8. President Jonathan should be appeased to forgive party leaders and government officials especially of northern extractions, who betrayed him in the 2015 elections.

9. President Jonathan must be acknowledged and acclaimed as the leader of the party. He should host a grand love feast where the foundations for these healings must be laid.

10. The PDP governors from the south east must be appealed to and appeased if necessary, for them to maintain their steadfastness and loyalty to PDP and resist pressure to the contrary.

11. The leadership of the party must begin to identify with and stand by party faithfuls under persecution or trials all over the federation to increase bonding and sense of camaraderie among members.

12. Party members nationwide must stand firm and remain within the PDP family instead of deflecting to APC, a fledging party though in power. People should take cue from the overwhelming misfortunes and lack of proper recognition that has befallen most of PDP members who defected to APC.

I have said it in the past and I repeat it again, APC is not truly a political party in the real sense of the word. Rather it’s a conglomeration of incongruous and immiscible components which will eventually disintegrate irretrievably when it comes under power struggle intensity which is already building up.

LONG LIVE THE PDP LONG LIVE THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

19-year old arrested for $1m cryptocurrency fraud after hacking 75 phones

A 19-year old man has been indicted for identity theft as part of an alleged $1m cryptocurrency heist affecting at least 75 victims in the United States.

A news release published on Dec. 18 by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance alleged that Yousef Selassie, 19, conducted a complex “SIM-swapping” scheme targeting residents across 20 different states.

SIM-swapping, also known as a port-out scam involves the theft of a victim’s cell phone number in order to hijack their online financial and social media accounts by intercepting the automated messages or phone calls used for two-factor authentication security measures.

As the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office news release outlines, Selassie has been indicted on nine counts, including identity theft in the first and second degrees, grand larceny in the first and fourth degrees, computer trespassing and tampering and scheming to defraud in the first degree.

In a statement, Attorney Vance said that the suspect had perpetrated the crimes from his Brooklyn apartment, illicitly accessing accounts belonging to 75 victims and siphoning over $1 million in cryptocurrency using “little more than an iPhone and computer.”

Selassie allegedly compromised online accounts in order to determine whether his targets had cryptocurrency holdings, which included, but were not limited to Gmail, Yahoo, and Dropbox.

He is alleged, in some instances, to have changed the passwords to these accounts to prevent victims from regaining control, and to have “intentionally selected and targeted victims known to be active in cryptocurrency, due in part to the inherent difficulty in tracing the theft and transfer of cryptocurrency.”

Selassie was arrested in Corona, California, pursuant to the execution of a search warrant, which led to the authorities’ recovery of various electronic devices as well as custom-made jewelry allegedly purchased using Bitcoin (BTC).

They moreover recovered a handwritten note containing a wallet seed phrase for a cryptocurrency wallet, which, when reconstituted, linked him to a number of known victims and the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency.

Sierra Leone grants Idris Elba and his wife honorary citizenship

Idris Elba and his wife have been granted honorary citizenship in his late father’s homeland of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leonean authorities gave diplomatic passports to the British star and his Canadian wife Sabrina Dhowre, asking them to serve as “brand ambassadors” for the country.

Sierra Leone is mostly remembered as the scene of a brutal war from 1991 till 2002, depicted in the film Blood Diamond.

On Friday, President Julius Maada Bio had breakfast with Elba and his wife.

The leader encouraged them to help “change the narrative of Sierra Leone from a war-torn and Ebola-affected country to a country that is full of investment opportunities and one of best destinations for tourism”, a presidential spokesman said.

Elba, 47, was raised in the UK by his Sierra Leonean father and Ghanaian mother.

The actor, best known for his roles in The Wire and Luther, was named Sexiest Man Alive in 2018 by People magazine.

Video & photos: Bobrisky, Eniola Badmus fly private jet

Bobrisky shared a video showing him boarding a private jet and boasted if it's not a private jet, then he isn't flying. But then, shortly afterwards, Eniola Badmus posted a photo too, showing her in a private jet. A look at it shows it's the same jet Bob is in, the interior is just the same. Few others also shared photos from the same jet, making it obviously not exclusive to Bob.

Their location was all still Abuja, showing there's a show at the capital.

Horror in Ibadan as motorcyclist r.a.p.e.s mom, beheads her five-year-old son

The Oyo State Police Command on Friday paraded a commercial motorcyclist, Gbenga Oduola, for allegedly beheading a five-year-old boy after reportedly raping his mother.

Oduola was among the 20 suspects paraded at the police headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, by the Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu.

The CP said the beheaded boy, Opeyemi Fadeyi, and his mother, Bosede Jimoh, 34, got into the hook when they boarded Oduola’s motorcycle at Oja Oba, Igbo Ora in the Ibarapa Local Government Area of the state, on Sunday, December 8, 2019.

Olukolu said the motorcyclist took Bosede and her son to his house on Lawal Estate, Imeleke Road, Igbo Ora, around 8pm instead of taking them to their destination and had carnal knowledge of the woman three times before daybreak.

The police boss said, “The following day, the commercial motorcycle rider took the victim’s son to another room and beheaded him with a cutlass.

He claimed to have dumped the remains of the boy at a nearby bush. The remains were later recovered and the body had been deposited at the general hospital mortuary for autopsy.”

The suspect said he buried the head of his victim in his shop and “threw his body in the bush.”
