Nine dead, 100 hospitalised after consuming locally-brewed alcohol

Nine people died and more than 100 were hospitalised after drinking local liquor made from coconut sap in two separate incidents in the Philippines, police said Monday.

Eight people died after drinking a local brand of the traditional liquor, known as lambanog, at a get-together in Rizal town in Laguna province, some 70 kilometres south of Manila, a police report said.

At least 122 residents from the town were also rushed to hospital suffering with stomach aches, vomiting, and numbness in some parts of the body, with some collapsing and losing consciousness, it added.

The ninth victim died in nearby Candelaria town in Quezon province on Sunday, three days after he drank an unbranded bootleg lambanog with neighbours.

Six people from there were also rushed to hospital, including two who were comatose, the police report added.

China to cut import tariffs on pork and tech parts

China will cut tariffs on hundreds of products ranging from frozen pork to high-tech parts next year, lowering trade barriers to support the economy.

In a statement, Chinese authorities said import tariffs on 859 items would be reduced from 1 January.

The world's second largest economy has typically used high tariffs to protect local industries.

China is fighting a long-running trade war with the US and faces a series of domestic challenges.

The ministry of finance said the tariff changes would be made to "increase imports of products facing a relative domestic shortage, or foreign speciality goods for everyday consumption".

That includes tariff rates on frozen pork - due to be lowered to 8% from 12% for some countries - as China struggles to cope with an outbreak of African swine fever.

Fire guts Benin market, EPDA office complex

Properties worth millions of naira were on Sunday destroyed by fire at the popular Ekiosa Market in Benin, Edo State.

The fire also gutted a five-storey office complex of the Edo Property Development Agency, located on the Sakponba Road.

The market fire, which started around 11am, caught the residents, most of who were still in church, unawares and forced many of them to abandon church services to salvage the situation.

One of the shop owners, Mrs Grace Edomo, said she was there when the market went up in flames, but could not state what actually started the fire.

“I was in my shop when I saw flames of fire in the market. My husband and I were inside the shop when he said he wanted to go home; as he was about to go, I looked outside and saw fire in the centre of the market. Unfortunately, there was nobody to help extinguish the fire since when it started,” she stated.

Isis in Iraq: Militants 'getting stronger again'

There are growing indications that the Islamic State (IS) group is re-organising in Iraq, two years after losing the last of its territory in the country.

Kurdish and Western intelligence officials have told the BBC that the IS presence in Iraq is a sophisticated insurgency, and IS attacks are increasing.

The militants are now more skilled and more dangerous than al-Qaeda, according to Lahur Talabany, a top Kurdish counter-terrorism official.

"They have better techniques, better tactics and a lot more money at their disposal," he said. "They are able to buy vehicles, weapons, food supplies and equipment. Technologically they're more savvy. It's more difficult to flush them out. So, they are like al-Qaeda on steroids."

The veteran intelligence chief delivered his stark assessment in a London accent - the legacy of years in the UK after his family had to flee from the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Fuel scarcity looms as petroleum tanker drivers threaten strike

Nigerians may be in for another round of scarcity of petroleum products in the New Year as members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of National Union of Petroleum and Engineering Gas Workers (NUPENG) have threatened to withdraw their services from January 15, 2020, should the Federal Government fail to clear Lagos roads of containers.

Speaking in Benin at the weekend at the end of the quarterly branch Executive meeting ‎of Petroleum Tanker Drivers, the national chairman of the drivers, Comrade Salmom Akanni Oladiti insisted that the January 15 deadline arose as a result of the inability of the federal task force set up to decongest Lagos‎ roads of trucks carrying containers.

Oladiti conceded that the task force may have tried it best to carry out its mandate but the problem of gridlocks on the roads, particularly at Coconut and Tin Can Island axes, persist, a situation which forces their members to always spend weeks before loading petroleum products from the Lagos Tank farm.

The chairman lamented that vandals have destroyed pipelines across the country which were meant to ensure free flow of petroleum products all over the country.

Abiodun appoints eight permanent secretaries

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced the appointment of eight permanent secretaries to reposition the state public service for greater efficiency and effectiveness.

But sixteen old permanent secretaries retained their portfolios and 12 others swapped ministries, agencies and parastatals in a major reshuffle since Abiodun assumed office in May.

On Friday, when the immediate past Head of Service, Lanre Bisiriyu, alongside 11 permanent secretaries, bowed out of the public service, the governor promised that he would apply merit in appointing the new leadership of the state civil service bureaucracy.

The new permanent secretaries were chosen from the directors’ cadre and they include Ms. Fadimitu Olusola, Ojetola Razak, Mr. Sodeinde Olukunle and Sotubo Olurotimi. The others are: Orekoya Bolaji, Lukan Jubril, Benson Lateef and Sorunke Dotun.

Dowry paid, rituals performed for corpse that ‘refused to be buried’

Traditional rituals had to be performed on Friday to “appease” a dead Kakamega woman, 34, who “refused to be buried”.

K24 Digital was told that Night Makunda, who hailed from Shamberere Village in Malava, clenched her fists and slightly raised her hands in the coffin to communicate her “disapproval of being buried without her grievances addressed”.

Her family members said Makunda’s dowry hadn’t been settled by her husband, hence her “frustration”.

“According to the Luhya culture, when a corpse clenches its fists, you cannot bury it because it is communicating its frustrations. The corpse, therefore, has to be appeased before it accepts to be interred,” a Luhya elder told K24 Digital.

On Friday, when it was time to lower Makunda’s coffin into the grave at around 1pm, it reportedly firmly clutched its fists.

It was then that Makunda’s family ordered her widower to settle her dowry before Makunda accepts to be buried.

On Monday, when Makunda’s body was taken home from the Kakamega County Referral Hospital morgue, the two families — from the Maragoli and Abashuu sub-tribes — differed sharply over where Makunda’s head will face in her grave. So vicious were the exchanges that a physical fight erupted, leaving several injured.

And on Friday after “declining” to be buried, attempts to “speak to Makunda to reveal her frustrations” bore no fruit as she “failed to give clear communication”.

It was then that Makunda’s family remembered that her widower hadn’t settled her dowry despite living with her for several years as his wife.

Makunda’s widower obliged and paid the dowry later Friday and, surprisingly, the corpse unclutched its fists. Traditional rituals were, thereafter, performed by elders before Makunda’s body was eventually lowered into her grave.

Makunda, who died after a short illness last month, is survived by her husband and four children.

George Michael's cousin says he 'has been forgotten' as he asks for public memorial

George Michael’s ‘cousin’ is urging the late singer’s family to build a memorial to the star, insisting: “He has been forgotten.”

George, who died on Christmas Day three years ago, is buried beside his beloved mum Lesley in an unmarked grave with only a small headstone that still carries no inscription.

Andros Georgiou, 57, says that needs to change so relatives can grieve properly for the singer, and a public memorial should be created for fans.

He said: “I believe the family are planning to have a simple cross on George’s grave with nothing on it.

“There should be an inscription on there. It should be his nickname, Yog, and something like, ‘The man and his music’. That’s how we all knew him.

“That needs to happen for the friends and family, and the estate need to make that happen. The sooner the better really – it’s already been three years.”

The grave is in a private section of Highgate cemetery, North London, away from tours that take visitors to see other famous resting places, including those of Karl Marx and Hitchhiker’s Guide author Douglas Adams.

Andros, a friend of George who grew so close to him that they called each other cousins, says the singer would not have wanted fans at his graveside.

He said: “He was private in life and that’s how it should be in death.

“But a beautiful tree, with a fence around it with flowers inside would be perfect. He loved walking, taking his dog out and he always loved flowers. An orchid was his favourite.

“One of his former houses had a tree growing through it. It would be amazing to replicate that.

“Even to plant a few trees in an area where fans could hang out and pay their respects would work well.”

A shrine that sprang up opposite George’s Highgate mansion was removed 18 months after his death, when its hundreds of visitors a week began to disturb neighbours.

And a bid to put up a statue in the Oxfordshire village of Goring-on-Thames, near the home where he died, was rejected by local councillors.

George’s dad Kyriacos and sisters Melanie and Yioda plan to leave the plot unmarked so they can mourn privately.

Andros, who fell out with George 19 years ago, visited his pal’s grave in 2017 and will return in the coming days.

Anthony Joshua enjoyed secret late-night flirtation with Man City ace Riyad Mahrez’s wife

Boxer Anthony Joshua enjoyed a secret late-night flirtation with Rita Mahrez, wife of Man City ace Riyad.

Model and singer Rita, 26, was seen with her hand on the world heavyweight champ’s knee at London club Tape on Friday.

Rita and Algeria skipper Riyad, 28 — dad to her two kids — have agreed a trial split, and are living 200 miles apart.

A clubgoer said: “Rita bumped into AJ on her way out and he invited her to join him at his table in VIP.

“Rita, who was with a female pal, clearly thought AJ was incredibly hot. They then spent much of the evening laughing and flirting.

“He didn’t have a clue who she was. He simply thought she was a pretty girl and enjoyed their chat.
“But when the club owner pointed out she was Riyad’s wife, AJ got a bit awkward, and totally backed away.

“He explained he didn’t want to step on any toes or cause a scene, and that he’d be stupid to be seen doing anything in public. They left with friends at 3am, but got into separate cars.”

AJ, 30, is the second boxer Rita has been linked to recently. American WBC champ Deontay Wilder flirted with Rita at Manchester’s Club Liv in August.

Okrika, gala hawkers arrested for robbery in Lagos

Two inter-state robbers who have been breaking into homes and boutiques in Lagos and Ogun State and dispossessing residents of their belongings were on Wednesday arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Oshodi after another successful outing.

The robbers, Gbemi Ogunleye, 45, a fairly used cloth seller in Ijora and Ini Effiong, 32, a road side Gala hawker in Oshodi were arrested after an all night robbery at the resident of one church cleric in Ibafo, Ogun State.

The suspects, in their confessions stated that they broke into homes and boutiques in Ibafo at midnight, cart away clothes, mobile phones and electronics.

They added that during the day, they sold the electronic and phones as well as clothes before returning to their respective businesses in Ijora and Oshodi, Lagos.

Ogunleye stated that apart from the fairly used clothes, popularly known as ‘okrika’, which he sells in Ijora, he also sells clothes and shoes taken from their victims at night. He maintained that they targeted boutiques and surveyed the environment days before breaking into them at night.

Effiong, in his confession to the police disclosed that although he hawked snacks in traffic, he teamed up with Ogunleye to rob at night.

He explained that he also robbed in traffic at night, adding that he had snatched many mobile phones in traffic in Oshodi Oke, Bolade and PWD while hawking snacks.

The two suspects who could not give the specific figure of houses and boutiques they had broken into confessed that their operations had been more restricted to Ibafo and Mowe because they feared they would be arrested if they attempted to rob in Lagos.

Ogunleye said he met Effiong in February 2019 in Oke – Koto, Agege. He stated that their discussions on how to survive the nation’s economic realities made them team up.

He further maintained that before he met his colleague, he had been operating alone, limiting himself to Ibafo and Mowe. “I don’t rob or burgle houses and boutiques everyday. Whenever I have money, I buy ‘okrika’ in Kotangoa market and sell them in Ijora, Lagos”.

The suspects disclosed that whenever they wanted to rob, they would converge at Kara, Ogun State before proceeding to Ibafo around 11:00 p.m to hang around the area before striking their target at about 1:00 a.m.

On their last operation in Ibafo, he said, “we hid in the bush till 2:00 a.m before we could gain entrance in to the house. We used cross bar to shift the burglar – proof from where we entered. We were with the occupants of the house till 5:00 a.m.

“We collected 5 mobile phones, N4, 000 and a motorcycle. We were in Oshodi when RRS bike riders intercepted and arrested us in the morning.”

Already, about three of their victims have identified the suspects at RRS headquarters. One of them, a teenager revealed that the suspects spent more than five hours with her and her younger sister while their parents were away.

She added that they parked all her mother’s jewellery, clothes and two flat screens before escaping.

Also arrested with the suspects was one Chinedu Onyema, their receiver. He came to Oshodi with N30,000 trying to bribe the police to release the suspects.

Recovered from the suspects were seven mobile phones, N4,000 and a motorcycle with the registration number GGE 962 QN

Onyema has confessed being their receiver and that he bought mobile phones and electronics from the suspects.

Commenting on the development, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu stated that there would be no hiding place for criminals in the metropolis.

19,273 fail teachers’ exam

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, Professor Segun Ajiboye on Sunday revealed that 53,674 candidates passed the November diet of the Professional Qualification Examination, PQE, organised by the Council to certify teachers in Nigeria.

The breakdown of the results, according to the Registrar, showed that 72,947 wrote the examinations in various centers across the country out of which 19,273 failed.

Ajiboye lauded the commitment of Nigerian teachers to excellent delivery in spite of the challenges they face and the support given to TRCN to reposition the teaching profession in the country.

Lagos State topped the list of those who registered for the examination with 8,224 while 6,067 passed the examination.

This was followed by Oyo State with about 5,599 registered, while only 4,243 passed and Kaduna where 3,769 passed out of 4,008 who registered for the examination.

According to Ajiboye, the professional qualification examination was a continuous exercise and urged unqualified teachers to register and write the next diet to escape the sanction which awaited uncertified ‘teachers’ in 2020.
