Santa lookalike robs bank, shouts ‘Merry Christmas’ as he sprays stolen money in the air

A man who dressed as Santa Claus decided to rob a bank and threw the stolen cash in the air while shouting ‘Merry Christmas’ at passersby, according to police.

David Wayne Oliver, 65, was arrested at a Starbucks coffee shop after he held up the Academy Bank in Colorado Springs on Monday afternoon.

He is currently being held on a $10,000 bond. Police said the suspect had ‘threatened the use of a weapon’ and left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Colorado Springs television station KKTV reported that eyewitness Dion Pascale recounted Oliver stepped outside the bank and tossed the money ‘all over the place’. ‘He started throwing money out of the bag’ before yelling, ‘Merry Christmas’.

Pascale said bystanders retrieved some of the money and gave it back to the bank as Oliver walked to the Starbucks, sat down and appeared to be waiting for police to arrest him, KKTV reported.

The Denver Post said police believe ‘thousands of dollars’ remained unaccounted for, adding there was no indication Oliver used a weapon in the heist.

Oliver, pictured in police mug shots with gray-and-white hair and a full white beard, is being held at the El Paso County jail and is set to make his first court appearance on Thursday.

Ganduje bans opposite sexes from plying same tricycles

The Kano State Government has banned persons of opposite genders from plying same commercial tricycles across the state from January, 2020.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje revealed this on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of 77th annual Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) organised by Zone A of Muslim Society of Nigeria (MSSN) held at Bayero University, Kano.

Mr Ganduje, who was represented by Commander General of Hisbah Board, Harun Ibn-Sina, said the state government is committed towards upholding Islamic values.

Commercial tricycles, popularly known as ‘A daidaita sahu’ in Kano, were introduced by a former governor of Kano, Ibrahim Shekarau, as a means of transportation for women only.

This was after Mr Shekarau’s government banned commercial motorcyclists from conveying women.

Since Mr Shekarau’s exit as governor, however, tricycles have been allowed to carry people of both sexes, a move the state government has now said will be changed.

Bauchi’s pregnant women conveyed to hospitals on donkeys

Residents of some communities in the Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State say they convey pregnant women and sick people to hospitals on donkeys and ox-drawn trucks due to lack of good roads.

Members of the communities stated this on Wednesday when a News Agency of Nigeria correspondent visited the Babuwuri and Ngummachame settlements, which were tagged ‘Hard-to-Reach’ in terms of health care by the European Union and UNICEF.

The heads of the settlements, Malam Magaji Abdu and Alhaji Ahmadu Garba, said the only means of conveying pregnant women and sick residents to health facilities were donkeys and ox-drawn trucks.

Abdu said, “This is due to the hard-to-reach nature of our settlements, coupled with the lack of a good road network and the distance from health facilities.

“If a woman develops obstructed labour or any delivery complications and when we have sick persons, who cannot be conveyed on motorcycles, the last option is to use either donkeys or ox-drawn trucks.

“This is done over a distance of 15km to 20km, depending on the location of the settlements and health facilities.”

The community leader, however, stated that in 2018, the EU/UNICEF introduced a health programme whereby a medical team was coming to the settlements once a month to conduct antenatal care for pregnant women and children below five years.

On his part, Garba stated, “They visit our settlements once in a month and render various medical services, including antenatal, nutritional, treatment of minor ailments, immunisation and others.

“Fortunately for us, the services and drugs are given to us free of charge and they have reduced both maternal and child mortality rates.”

The community heads, who are also the village mobilisers for the programme, stressed that in spite of the EU/UNICEF assistance, they were still using donkeys and ox-drawn trucks to convey patients during emergencies.

They called on the state government to provide roads, health facilities and schools in the communities as well as to sustain the EU/UNICEF outreach programme in their areas.

Teenager who had been missing for two years found alive in cupboard of suspected paedophile

A 15-year-old German boy who vanished for more than two years has been found alive in the cupboard of a suspected pedophile’s home.

The teen, only identified as Marvin, was discovered inside the cabinet on Friday as authorities searched the Recklinghausen home of a man suspected of distributing child p3rnography.

He was dressed in the same clothes he wore on the day of his disappearance and looked like “a broken old man,” his mother, Manuela B., told the German outlet Bild.

Police in the western German city said they had no indication that the boy was being held against his will.

But Manuela told the outlet she doubts her son was there of his own free will.

“The man whose place they found him at must have manipulated him,” she said. “I could go crazy thinking about what’s been done to him.”

The 44-year-old resident of the apartment was taken into custody on suspicion of carrying out serious s3xual crimes. Various electronic devices were also seized.

The man’s 77-year-old father was arrested but later released, according to the report.

Marvin, who was 13 at the time of his disappearance, was living in a care home for young people, after struggling to process the death of his father. Social workers there reported him missing in June 2017.

Marvin is currently in psychiatric care.

“He now needs to process what’s happened over the past two-and-a-half years,” his mom told Bild. “This is all so painful.”

In the meantime, his mother plans to visit him for Christmas — and has a gift in mind.

“I want to give him new clothes,” she said.

Teenager kills pregnant older sister and fakes her suicide because he thinks she's an embarrassment to the family

A Texas teenager staged a suicide by his 8-months-pregnant sister to cover up the fact that he strangled her because he thought she was an “embarrassment to their family,” cops have said.

Eduardo Arevalo, 19, wrote a phony note that was found by his relatives in which Viridiana Arevalo, 23, purportedly said she wanted to kill herself, officials allege.

In reality, Eduardo choked the life out of Viridiana on Dec. 16, one day before her boyfriend reported her missing to cops in The Colony, 30 miles north of Dallas, police Sgt. Aaron Woodard said.

Following the murder, according to Woodard, Eduardo stuffed his sister’s body into the trunk of his car and dumped it in a remote area about an hour away from their home.

But when his family started questioning Viridiana’s disappearance, Eduardo retrieved her body and left it in an alley in The Colony, where neighbors found it Sunday and called the police, Woodard said.

Investigators quickly zeroed in on Eduardo, who allegedly confessed to the crime and described it as an honor killing.

Eduardo claimed that his sister was an “embarrassment to their family” and that “it would be better off that she wasn’t here,” Woodard said.

In addition to admitting that he faked the suicide note, Eduardo described the gruesome retrieval of his sister’s body nearly a week after her death, Woodard said.

“As the week went on, Eduardo stated that he wanted his family to know where Viri was, at so he went and picked up her body and brought her back Sunday morning in the early morning hours and dumped her body in the alleyway,” Woodard said.

Cops credited local residents with helping them crack the case by turning over video from “their home surveillance and doorbell cameras.”

“That really assisted the investigation and helped piece together the timeline for this,” Woodard said.

Neither Viridiana’s boyfriend, who fathered her child, nor any of his relatives are suspected in the slaying, cops said.

Eduardo has been charged with capital murder because his sister was pregnant.

Under Texas law, he would face either the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted.

He could also face additional charges.

Eduardo is being held without bail in The Colony Municipal Jail.

Canadian man accidentally shoots himself while trying to steal puppy

A Canadian puppy thief has accidentally shot himself in the leg while trying to make a getaway, police said.

The 20-year-old suspect, who wasn’t identified, arranged through an online classifieds section to purchase a nine-week-old American Bulldog named “Tarzan” in Brampton on Friday, according to Peel Regional Police.

But when the pooch was handed over to him, the man refused to pay and brandished a firearm at the seller, authorities said.

But when he ran away with the dog he mistakenly shot himself in the leg and then fell to the ground.

The seller called authorities, who rendered aid to the suspect before he was brought to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

Peel Regional Police Constable Heather Cannon said Tarzan was returned to the seller unharmed after the incident.

“I know that in the end we did have an unharmed very happy puppy that was returned to the seller … but I think it is something to be mindful of, especially when people are considering buying and selling online,” Cannon said.

The suspect has been charged with robbery and firearm-related offenses stemming from the botched theft.

If you like, call me Baba Go Slow - Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), says he will uphold the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in pursuing the policies of his regime “whether you call me Baba Go Slow or not”.

Buhari stated this when he received residents of the Federal Capital Territory led by the Minister, Muhammad Bello, during the traditional Christmas Day homage at The presidential Villa, Abuja.

Before receiving the FCT residents, he had earlier on Wednesday met with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

The VP had presented Christmas gifts, including a card to his boss.

Buhari said his administration would focus on the provision of infrastructure, especially roads, power and railway transport, notwithstanding any criticisms it had faced.

According to him,  Nigerians will not care about who is the President or in government so long as they have good infrastructure.

The  President said, ‘‘This administration sincerely believes that if you get infrastructure right, most Nigerians will mind their own business. They may not even care who is in government.

‘‘But when you deny them infrastructure, then there is nothing they can do.”

He thanked Nigerians for voting him into office twice, saying it was proof they sympathised with him.

He added, ‘‘But I can assure you that I thank Nigerians very much from the bottom of my heart.

When I travelled to all the 36 states before the elections, what I personally observed and the number of Nigerians that turned up in every state to see and listen to me, were more than what anybody can pay or force.

‘‘What I saw made me believe that the majority of Nigerians understand and sympathise with me.

“I swore to hold this office by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, whether you call me Baba Go Slow or not.

“I will be diligent in serving this country dutifully.”

Nigerian man arrested while trying to catch a flight home over wire money

A Nigerian man, caught trying to catch a flight home, is in the process of being extradited from Washington to Stamford, where he will face charges that he illegally intercepted a $30,000 wire transfer from Purdue Pharma, police said.

According to Port of Seattle Police, Emmanuel Mong, 24, of Savannah, Georgia, was trying to catch an Emirates Airlines flight to Nigeria on Dec. 16 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Seeing there was a felony warrant in his name, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained him until police arrived at Sea-Tac Airport.

According to the report, Stamford police issued a warrant for Mong’s arrest in 2017, charging him with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree computer crime and conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, with a court-ordered appearance bond of $250,000.

Despite his protests that he has never lived in Georgia and claims that he is not the person wanted in the warrant, Mong is being extradited to Stamford.

His Stamford criminal defense attorney, Allan Friedman, said Mong is eager to clear his name.

“Mr. Mong is looking forward to coming to Stamford and having his day in court and presenting evidence of his innocence,” Friedman said. “We will resolve this matter in court.”

Prison officer who fell in love with a dangerous inmate at Britain’s biggest men’s jail locked up for 12 months

A prison officer who fell in love and had a fling with a "dangerous" inmate at Britain’s biggest men’s jail was locked up for twelve months on Tuesday.

Ayshea Gunn, 27, was sentenced to a year behind bars after numerous phone calls, some sexually explicit, were found between her and prisoner Khuram Razaq, 29.

Mr Razaq was an inmate at Berwyn Prison, Wrexham, serving 12 years for conspiracy to rob.

Mold Crown Court heard that there were snaps of the pair kissing and hugging in Ms Gunn's bedroom and that she had smuggled in a pair of knickers for him inside her bra.

The prison officer, from Pant Glas, Wrexham, Wales admitted misconduct in public office between July and November last year.

Prosecuting barrister Simon Mills said Ms Gunn had been a probation officer at the 1,200 inmate prison since it opened in February 2017 - and had been trained in security awareness and corruption prevention.

She also had "conditioning" training - making officers aware of the risk of prisoners trying to compliment and later exploit them.

Mr Mills said the pair "weren’t being particularly subtle" about their inappropriate relationship.

Colleagues noticed Ms Gunn spent a lot of time with Mr Razaq and went in his cell for long periods.

The number of reports led to an internal investigation and his in-cell official phone was examined.

The prosecutor said Mr Razaq had added the name of a woman purporting to be a Keeley Mason and by November had called her 913 times for many, many hours.

They were listened to and Ms Gunn’s voice was recognised.

In the same month, Ms Gunn had sent her bank details to an associate of the inmate and £1,500 was paid into her account.

His mobile phone wasn’t found, but it was revealed Ms Gunn had been using three phone numbers.

A total of 1,213 calls were identified between them from late August 2018 to the following November.

The pair would send each other explicit sexual videos and stream lewd live footage of themselves - and they even remained in touch after her arrest.

In one explicit video, Mr Razaq told the prison officer: "I can’t wait until next week. I am going to throw you on my bed."

The court also heard that Ms Gunn sent screenshots to him of prison officers’ WhatsApp chats about prisoners including discussion about search tactics - which was deemed by the court as a "betrayal."

Ms Gunn, a university graduate, also bought clothing for Razaq and placed a bet for him, having "fallen victim to compliments."

Cabals are respectable Nigerians – Garba Shehu

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, on Wednesday insisted that cabals are not powerful people controlling President Muhammadu Buhari in key decision making.

His comments come less than a week he reportedly said there is nothing wrong in having ‘cabals’ around the President Buhari in the daily running of the government.

Shehu on Wednesday told Channels TV that contrary to beliefs that cabals manipulate the President, they are respectable Nigerians who deserve respect because they have achieved a lot.

He accused Nigerians of coining the words and recalled that people believed former Presidents Umaru Yar’adua, Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinets were influenced by cabals.

“A lot of people who are being dragged into this cabal thing, they are respectable Nigerians who have achieved a lot for themselves and for the nation. They are not there as hungry people who are there to grab things for themselves,” he said.

Shehu who noted that it is a privilege appointed into the President’s cabinet said one wouldn’t have been chosen by the President if not for trust.

He, therefore, warned that Nigerians not to brand people cabals simply because they offered to serve the nation by being close to the President.

“Nigerians have formed the practice by labelling people that are in some advisable positions of the President as a cabal.

“People (cabals) should not be labelled negatively simply because they have offered themselves to support the President of this country,” he stated.

Woman who married in 1984 gives birth to first child

A 58-year-old woman, Mrs Dorcas Osiebo, who stopped menstruating in 2006 without a trace of pregnancy, has been delivered of a baby boy.

Dorcas, who delivered the baby on 13 Dec in Abuja, said that she was confused and excited when her Pastor’s wife, a nurse confirmed her pregnancy.

“She (nurse) looked at my face and said, ‘Mummy, to God be the glory, you are pregnant”. I was very surprised”.

Dorcas got married to Mr Christopher Osiebo, now 64 years old, with both hoping to have a child in their 35-year-old union.

“But early this year (2019), I just felt in my body as if I was pregnant, but I thought how can that be especially when I have not seen my period since 2006,” she said.

“I got married in January 1984, but there was no child at all; people who got married the same year with us have children; even my immediate younger sister has grand-children,” Dorcas said.

She said they sought help from both the traditional and orthodox medical practices but there was no respite.

According to her, she entered menopause in 2006, and her younger sister, who got married after her, is already a grandmother.

“I drank a lot of concoctions (herbal mixtures) in my effort to get pregnant.

“One of the concoctions, I cannot withstand the smell; to drink it; I will block my nose, and close my eyes before I can drink it.

“I did all these to make things better for me but nothing good came out of it,” she said.

“We have gone to many places and hospitals that we cannot even number them all. In 2006, my husband took me for scanning at a hospital in Jos and obstruction was discovered (not fibroid).

“An operation was carried out at the hospital and I came back home but no solution, rather, since the operation was carried out, I didn’t see my period again.

“When I told my husband, he didn’t believe I was pregnant. But I discovered that I no longer like to eat my best foods and my clothes no longer size me,” she explained.

While her period of waiting for a child lasted, she said: “None of my in-laws disturbed me. My late father-in-law did not disturb me, although he once asked why we were just folding our arms and doing nothing about the situation.

“We then told him that we were not folding our arms but trying our best, but that the thing never worked out.

“But I and my husband were worried. My husband is the firstborn of his father and I am the first of mine also.

“We have younger ones who already have good number of children but it is only us that did not have children of our own. Whenever we remembered all these, we were not happy,” she said.

However, Mr Osiebo said after a long period of marriage and prayer without a child he decided to depend on God for a miracle.

“But by the grace of God today, a baby boy has entered this family; that is the cause of my joy. I am very happy, thank God,” said the excited husband.

Oshiomhole’s mum rejects Obaseki’s Christmas gifts

Hajiya Aishetu Oshiomhole, mother of the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), has rejected Christmas gifts sent to her son, Adams Oshiomhole by his successor in Edo, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Mr Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to Edo State Governor on Media and Communications, disclosed this in a statement in Benin on Wednesday.

Osagie said the conventional Christmas presents reserved for former governors of the state that were sent to Oshiomhole’s home were returned.

He said that messengers from the state government were dispatched to deliver the gifts on Christmas eve.

“The messengers said they met the mother of the former governor who rejected the items, stating that her son would not accept the gifts.

“The gift items meant for Comrade Oshiomhole include four cows and ten bags of rice”.

He said the distribution of Christmas gifts was an annual ritual by the state government which serves as an expression of love, further strengthening the ties between the government and the people.

He said the gifts were distributed to other government functionaries, political appointees, heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and heads of institutions of higher learning, among other prominent people in the society.

Osagie said Obaseki and Comrade Oshiomhole had been locked in a political tussle over the governor’s policy choices focused on prioritising the peoples’ welfare as against pressures by a handful of politicians to share the state’s resources.

He said the governor had set the political rift aside to perform the ritual of sending the gifts to Comrade Oshiomhole.
