Army captures more terrorists, rescues over 165 victims

The Nigerian Army says its troops have neutralised and captured more Boko Haram/Islamic State of West Africa’s Province (ISWAP) terrorists and rescued 165 women and children from their captivity in Borno State.

The Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the operations were carried out in conjunction with the troops of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJT).

Iliyasu said the troops of Nigerian Army Super Camp 7 deployed at Bama area of the state killed one terrorist, captured one alive and rescued eight women and six children at Tafana 1, 2 and 3 villages in Bama on Dec. 27, 2019.


He disclosed that the rescued children were immediately administered with Polio Vaccines.

According to him, troops captured Boko Haram flags, recovered 16 arrows and 32 refilled rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition during the encounter.

Iliyasu also disclosed that troops of 25 Task Force Brigade deployed at Super Camp 2 in Damboa, arrested a high profile Boko Haram informant/logistics supplier, Ibrahim Buba and two others suspected to be his couriers at Shuwari village in Damboa District.

He added that troops of 242 Battalion in Monguno, arrested suspected terrorists’ logistics suppliers, Abubakar Aisami and Modu Baba with food stuff and drugs concealed in a bag of smashed corn powder for delivery to the terrorists.

26,039 babies born on New Year’s Day in Nigeria ― UNICEF

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says an estimated 26,039 babies will be born in Nigeria on New Year’s Day.

UNICEF’s Nigeria Representative, Mr Peter Hawkins, said this yesterday in a statement.

Nigerian babies would account for almost seven per cent of the estimated 392,078 babies to be born on New Year’s Day globally.

Hawkins said that this figure is the third-highest number of babies in the world, after India with 67,385; and China, 46,299.

Study reveals young males who own cars have more sex than those who don't

Young men who own a car have more sex, a study has found.

Having their own wheels gives lads higher self-esteem and is a status symbol women find attractive, researchers say.

Those with a motor typically had sex twice as often, and with double the number of partners — but they were less likely to use a condom.

A car also makes it easier to get to places for sex — and can be used for bonking in public places.


Study leader David Soriano-Hernandez said: “It can act as a sexual enhancer in emerging adulthood.

“Women still demonstrate a clear preference for men that possess or show the potential to acquire material resources.

"In Western culture material resources can be measured in terms of bank accounts, homes and cars.”

“It is not unusual for cars to have a type of erotic effect on their owners and spectators.

“Expressions such as ‘hot’, ‘sexy’, and ‘exciting’ are often used to describe automobiles.”

The university researchers in Mexico asked 1,000 males aged 17 to 24 about their sex lives.

The findings are published in the journal Sexuality Research and Social Policy.

Google Doodle honours Amaka Igwe on 57th posthumous birthday

Late Nollywood filmmaker, Amaka Igwe, has been honoured with a Google Doodle on her 57th posthumous birthday.

A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepages intended to commemorate holidays, events, achievements and notable historical figures.

The doodle went live today as an honour of late Igwe’s contributions to Nollywood.

She was a Nigerian filmmaker, broadcasting executive, and the owner of Top Radio 90.9 Lagos and Amaka Igwe Studios.

She was recognised as one of the second generation filmmakers who helped begin the video film era of Nigerian cinema.

Cancer patient dies on operating table after surgeons accidentally set her on fire

A woman with cancer died during a routine operation after surgeons set her on fire, it is believed.

Doctors at Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest, Romania, used an alcohol-based disinfectant on the woman, 66, before accidentally igniting the fluid with an electric scalpel, according to reports.

She suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body and died a week later.

Police have now launched an investigation into her death.

Her family  said they hadn't been told of "the gravity of the situation" - and were only told that an "accident" had killed her.

A relative said: "We found out some details from the press, when they were broadcast on TV stations.

"We aren't making accusations, we just want to understand what happened."

Romania's Ministry of Health are launching an investigation into the incident.

Romania's health minister Victor Costache promised to investigate the "traumatic" incident, adding: "We hope to learn from this troubling episode.

Woman and her husband shot dead by her dad in New Year horror

A dad reportedly gunned down his daughter and her new husband on New Year's Eve before turning the gun on himself.

The gunman, thought to be the estranged father of Lindita Musai, is under police guard in hospital after the festive horror which saw the 25-year-old woman and her new husband shot dead at an address in Melbourne, Australia.

The suspected killer, who police said was a 55-year-old man, was said to have blasted 29-year-old Veton Musai and his wife at around 10.30am on Tuesday.

A witness then reportedly saw him jump out of a bush and put a gun to his chin before pulling the trigger.

Veton's cousin Jetmir Lumani today posted on Facebook : "Today we lost my beautiful baby cousin Veton Musai and his angel wife Lindita Musai..... I can't even begin to explain how I feel.

"The only thing keeping us strong is belief in God.

"How a father can take his own daughters (sic) life is beyond comprehension.. but the devil truly is among us."

The couple had just celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

TV presenter gives birth to baby boy after spending nearly N40m on IVF

A couple who documented their struggle to conceive have finally achieved their dream after spending nearly N40m (£80,000) on 15 rounds of IVF.

TV news presenters Hannah and Lewis Vaughan Jones spent years battling with infertility.

But just before Christmas the pair announced the arrival of Matheson Calon Tallett Vaughan Jones - or "Sonny" for short - who they described as "perfect in every way".

"We've been through many years of heartache, but we've got the best Christmas present at the end of it all," said CNN news anchor Hannah, who gave birth to Sonny on December 10.

"We have been very public about it for the past three years or so, but in the years before that it was very private and painful - and there was a lot of shame involved which anyone going through infertility will be familiar with.

"But we have been lucky. We are the very, very lucky ones."

Lewis, originally from Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, said it was harrowing watching his wife going through round after round of IVF which involved frequent injections and hormone treatment.

"We wanted a family, but frankly we didn't think it was going to happen for us," said Lewis, a freelance news presenter for BBC News and ITV News.

"In fact, I think we'd already emotionally moved on. We said to each other that this was going to be our last round [of IVF].

"And it was the last little embryo that we had left. We'd sent it off for testing and the results came back inconclusive, so we didn't think it was going to work at all.

"But we'd come this far, so we made the decision to put the embryo back in and, unbelievably, it grew to become Sonny."

Nigeria’s oldest surviving World War II soldier dies

The oldest surviving soldier of the Nigerian Army, Pa Adama Aduku is dead.

The World War II veteran died on Tuesday at age 101.

The news of his death was announced today by the Nigerian Army on their official Twitter handle, @HQNigerianArmy

According to the post by the Nigerian Army, his death was announced by one of his relations on the Whatsapp platform of the Director Defence Information Defence Headquarters news platform early this morning.


Born 1918, to a peasant farmer at Abejukolo-Ife, at Omaha Local Government Area of Kogi State, Aduku joined the army in 1945.

Aduku, on December 31, 2018, was presented with an award of excellence by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, given to him by the Nigerian army.

Car theft: Why Naira Marley might never appear in court

Controversial singer, Naira Marley who failed to appear in court over an alleged car theft has reportedly opted for out-of-court settlement after being given a last chance to appear in court.

Chief Magistrate, Tajudeen Elias, had Naira Marley, till January 14, 2020, to appear in court, else a warrant will be issued for his arrest.

However, the legal counsels representing Naira Marley, his two brothers Idris Fashola, 18; Babatunde Fashola, 24; and their cousin, Kunle Obere, 22, disclosed that the four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, assault and obstructing the police against their clients might be dropped before the next hearing of the case if the talks between them and the complainant’s lawyers is successful.


The rapper’s counsel, Mr Awokulehin Ayodeji who spoke to The Nation disclosed that the Police are not against a peaceful resolution of the matter.

He said; “We hope that an agreement will be reached before the next adjourned date. The police have no problem with an out of court settlement.”

In the four counts filed in court by the police, Naira Marley and his siblings were accused of stealing a Toyota Camry valued at N1.8m along with an iPhone X5 said to be worth N330,000.

The car and the mobile phone, according to the police, belong to one Mr Adelekan Ademola.

The prosecutor, Edet Okoi, said Naira Marley and others acted contrary to sections 112, 172, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Mariah Carey’s Twitter account hacked, racist slurs and Eminem jokes posted

Mariah Carey‘s Twitter account appeared to be hacked briefly yesterday, sharing tweets featuring racist slurs and comments about Eminem.

Most of the tweets shared with Carey’s 21.4 million followers were quickly deleted. While many appeared to be meaningless and were designed to troll the singer’s fans, there were also some that featured some seriously offensive content.

“Merry Christmas You Dumb Ass N***as!!” one tweet read, while another since-deleted tweet said: “#n***a legalize the word for 2020 u fucking c**n fucks”


The tweets then turned their attention to Eminem, who Carey has been embroiled in a very public feud with for years.

“Eminem can still hold this pussy…” one tweet said. A second then poked fun at the size of the rapper’s manhood: “Eminem has a little p3nis.”

Apparently sleeping while the apparent hack was taking place, Carey later responded by tweeting: “I take a freaking nap and this happens?”

Thankfully, everything is back to normal now.

Being pregnant brought me depression – Ruth Kadiri

Nollywood actress, Ruth Kadiri has recounted her experience in 2019 when she suddenly became pregnant after her wedding, saying she was depressed as she never wanted a baby then.

She, however, said, last year brought her more blessings with the arrival of the baby.

On her Instagram page, Kadiri said after her wedding, she became pregnant and that she was not sure she wanted a baby and was scared.

She wrote: “2019 came with more than a blessing. After my wedding I became pregnant, wasn’t sure I wanted a baby now, was so scared it will affect my career, was so scared I wouldn’t be a good mum. For unknown reasons I became depressed.

Woman filmed ‘having s.e.x’ in club was so drunk she can’t remember doing it

A woman apparently filmed having s.e.x in a club has spoken about what happened to warn other people of the dangers of heavy drinking.

 The unnamed woman was filmed at The Beach in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, with a man thrusting against her. His trousers appeared to be down and his backside was covered by an emoji in the footage that we have chosen not to publish.

 She said that she was ashamed of the video and on the night in question she had ‘drunk more than I ever have’.

She said: ‘Alcohol can be dangerous and quite frankly the fact that I can’t remember even walking into the club unsettled me.’ The woman also added that she regretted the decisions she’d made.


She told Grimsby Live: ‘I do believe it has been blown out of proportion, as there was no physical penetration. ‘I understand the issues with what happened and the implication of what was seen, but would like to move on.’

The chairman of PubWatch in Cleethorpes, Anne Coleman said the incident will be discussed at next month’s meeting in a bid to learn lessons and reinforce licensing rules. Emergency services are now getting ready for New Year’s Eve, with thousands of people across the UK heading to parties.

Pope Francis apologises to smacked woman

Pope Francis has apologised for smacking the hand of a female well-wisher who grabbed him and yanked him toward her.

The leader of over one billion Roman Catholics said he had lost his patience and set a “bad example”.

His unusual apology came after he used his first homily of the new year to denounce violence against women, which he compared to profaning God.

Pope Francis, 83, had a sharp encounter with a woman on Tuesday evening during a walkabout in St. Peters Square.


The pilgrim, who has not been identified, unexpectedly seized his hand and pulled him towards her, causing him evident alarm. A clearly disgruntled Francis wrenched himself free by slapping down at her arm.

“So many times we lose patience, even me, and I apologise for yesterday’s bad example,” the pope told thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday at the end of the traditional New Year Mass.

He had used the service to issue a forthright condemnation of the abuse of women in modern society.

“All violence inflicted on women is a desecration of God,” he told a packed St. Peter’s Basilica.

“How often is a woman’s body sacrificed on the profane altar of advertising, profit, pornography,” he said, adding that the female body “must be freed from consumerism, it must be respected and honoured”.

Despite creating life, women “are continually offended, beaten, raped, forced into prostitution” and made to have abortions, he said. “We can understand our level of humanity by the way we treat a woman’s body,” he told the congregation.
