Police kill two suspected armed robbers in Anambra
The Command’s PPRO, SP Mohammed Haruna, who confirmed the death via a statement he issued to journalist on Monday evening in Awka, said, at about 1:15 pm, January 13th, 2020, that Police operatives attached to the Command Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) responded to a distress call and stormed the hideout of a robbery gang who allegedly attacked one Chiegulem Chidera ‘m’ at Agouye Umuko Awka and snatched his Nissan Xterra jeep with Reg number Cross River GGJ 402 AA at gunpoint.
According to Mohammed, the suspects were trailed at Nkwo Agulu and on sighting the Police opened fire after which the police responded promptly, as a result, the two suspects one Onyebuchi Ngala ‘m’ aka Ceaser and Izuchukwu Okoro ‘m’ were fatally wounded during the gun encounter. And they were taken to the hospital for treatment but confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor.
“Exhibits recovered from the suspects include the snatched Xterra jeep, one Ak 47 rifle, one pump action gun, six life cartridges, four expended ammunition, five life ammunition of 7.62mm and two Ak47 magazines.
He noted that the deceased suspects were also among the gang responsible for the Abduction of one Engr Emeka Chiaghana ‘m’ of Nibo on 25/10/2019.
“Meanwhile, the case is still under investigation and effort is ongoing to locate the whereabouts of the abducted victim.

Barcelona sack Ernesto Valverde and appoint Quique Setien
Valverde, 55, helped the club to two successive La Liga titles and they lead on goal difference this season.
However, the Catalan side have produced a series of unconvincing displays under his leadership and have failed to reach the Champions League final.
Setien, 61, led Betis to their highest finish since 2005 and to the Copa del Rey semis before leaving in May.
He has agreed to a two-and-a-half-year deal and will be presented to the media at 13:30 GMT on Tuesday.
In a statement, Barca said they had reached an agreement with Valverde to terminate his contract and thanked him "for his professionalism, his commitment, his dedication and his always positive treatment towards all that make up the Barca family".

Same-sex marriage now legal in Northern Ireland
For couples who are already married, their marriage will now be legally recognised in Northern Ireland.
However, those who are already in a civil partnership will not be able to convert it to a marriage at this stage.
The Northern Ireland Office is set to begin a consultation later this year about converting civil partnerships and the role of churches in same-sex marriages.
Heterosexual couples will also be able to enter into civil partnerships.

US reverses China 'currency manipulator' label
The US said it made the change because China had agreed to refrain from devaluing its currency to make its own goods cheaper for foreign buyers.
Washington and Beijing are expected to sign that "phase one" pact this week.
The deal is aimed at de-escalating the tit-for-tat tariff war the two countries have engaged in since 2018.
"China has made enforceable commitments to refrain from competitive devaluation, while promoting transparency and accountability," US Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, said.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused China of allowing the value of the yuan to fall, making Chinese goods cheaper.
But, on Monday, the US said that the value of the yuan had appreciated since August, at the height of the trade war.
Mr Mnuchin also said that China had made "enforceable commitments" to refrain from devaluation and to share more information about its exchange rates.

Breaking! Queen supports Harry and Meghan as Royal summit ends
Shortly after 5 p.m. local time, Buckingham Palace released a statement from the queen in which she described the discussions on the future of "my grandson and his family" as "constructive."
"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family," the statement said. "Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family."
She said Harry and Meghan made it clear they don't want to rely any longer on public funds in their new lives.
"It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K," the statement said. "These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days."

Prince Harry arrives at Sandringham for royal 'Megxit' summit showdown with the Queen
The Duke of Sussex wants his 93-year-old grandmother, father and brother to let him and his wife keep their royal titles while living abroad and grabbing 'financial independence' to earn their own money using the Sussex brand, which experts say could be worth £400million.
Harry drove into Sandringham via its rear entrance in a blacked-out Range Rover Evoque at 11.20am - just as he and his older brother released their first joint statement since the abdication crisis blasting claims William has been bullying the Sussexes.
William arrived from nearby Anmer Hall at 1.45pm - 15 minutes before the 2pm meeting started - suggesting he chose to miss lunch with his brother and the Queen, who has been there since Christmas, as well as Charles, who arrived by helicopter yesterday.
Her Majesty has been supported by Prince Philip throughout the abdication crisis and her husband of 72 years has acted as her sounding board for finding a solution. The Duke of Edinburgh ducked out of the palace before the mega-summit started, leaving his wife to broker the deal, but is said to be furious with his grandson and his Californian-born wife.

Prince William and Prince Harry issue joint statement denying 'bullying claims'
The pair said the speculation about their relationship was "offensive" and "potentially harmful".
The extremely strong statement was released this morning by Buckingham Palace - just hours before crunch talks at Sandringham.
It said on behalf of the brothers: “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge.
“For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful.”
Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, announced last week they are to step back as senior royals and become 'financially independent'.
It has since emerged that Harry and Meghan reportedly have a 'private WhatsApp plan' for during the talks, being chaired by the Queen later today.
The Duchess is also said to have 'told Harry that being in Royal Family is not working for me'.
And it is claimed Harry was reportedly ‘heartbroken’ at being put in a position where he has been made to choose 'between Meghan and the Queen’.
He will come face to face with his grandmother this afternoon as senior royals race to thrash out plans for his and Meghan's future.

Charles is 'hurt' after giving millions of his OWN cash to Meghan and Harry
Harry's father has reportedly tapped into private income from his £1.2billion Duchy of Cornwall estate to support the Sussexes because he was desperate to keep them happy in the UK and particularly to support Meghan after she moved to Britain from Toronto.
A source told the Evening Standard: 'There is a great deal of hurt given that the Prince of Wales has gone out of his way to help his son who he loves dearly and embrace his daughter-in-law into the family'.
It came as father and son will face each other for the first time in the abdication crisis today as crunch talks begin at Sandringham with the Queen and Prince William also in the room. Meghan will be 'dialling in' to support her husband from Vancouver this afternoon - but Kate has stayed at Kensington Palace.
A grim-faced Prince Philip was seen driving from the Norfolk palace this morning but the 98-year-old will not help broker an exit deal with the Sussexes, who he is said to furious with.

New book suggests pilot could have jumped out of plane carrying him and Emiliano Sala
Sala was killed in tragic circumstances in January last year just days after completing a transfer to Cardiff City .
The former Nantes striker was on board a Piper Malibu light aircraft, piloted by Ibbotson, over the English Channel, when it disappeared off Alderney.
After intensive searching, the aircraft was located in the channel a fortnight later at a depth of 63 metres, before Sala's body was recovered from the wreckage.
Ibbotson's body however, has never been found.
Now a new book titled: 'The killing of Emiliano Sala', as serialised by the Sun , is due for release, and claims Ibbotson may have avoided the fatal crash.
In the book, author Harry Harris writes: "How is it that if David Ibbotson had one outstanding skill, it was as a skydiver?
"And why was the pilot not in the plane when the privately funded salvage operation discovered (Sala’s) body?
“Was the pilot able to eject before it plummeted to its fate? If the pilot survived, where is he? If he didn’t, where is his body?"

Meghan Markle reportedly 'told Harry being in Royal Family is not working for me'
The Duchess of Sussex, 38, is understood to have told Prince Harry 'she wants to leave'.
The pair had reportedly become frustrated by 'constantly being told their place' over the last two years.
"She wants to leave," a source told The Times of the Duchess. "She thinks, 'It's not working for me.'"
However, the Duke of Sussex, is also said to be torn about his future, but under pressure from both sides.
Meghan previously revealed in an ITV documentary how she had struggled with the media attention and that 'not many people had asked if she was ok'.
When questioned how her physical and mental health was faring, the former actress said: "Look, any woman, especially when they're pregnant, you're really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging.
"And then when you have a newborn, you know?"
"And especially as a woman, it's really — it's a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed, it's ..." she said, trailing off.
She added: "Also, thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I'm OK. But it's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes."
When asked if things had been a struggle, she replied "yes".
Harry will this afternoon come face to face with the Queen as senior royals race to thrash out plans for his and Meghan's future.

Man develops 'eggshell testicle' after being bitten by a mosquito
The 80-year-old man, who is unnamed, went to the doctor after discovering blood in his urinate and having problems urinating.
While the man assumed these symptoms were the result of a urinary tract infection (UTI), doctors discovered that one of his testicles had actually calcified, with an ‘eggshell’ forming around it.
According to a report, published in BMJ Case Reports , his right testicle had become ‘grossly enlarged’ and felt ‘stony’ to the touch.
A CT scan revealed that fluid had accumulated in his testicle, causing the wall of his sac to calcify - the process of calcium building up in a body tissue.
The doctors believe that this process was caused by an infection from filarial worms known as filariasis.
These worms are transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, and can cause a number of issues if they reach the lymphatic vessels.
In their report, the researchers, led by Dr Pavan Kumar, wrote: “Elephantiasis – painful, disfiguring swelling of the legs and genital organs – is a classic sign of late-stage disease.”
This kind of infection can usually be treated with drugs, but sometimes requires surgery, according to the researchers.
However, in the case report, the researchers don’t elaborate on any treatment the man received.

Security agents are impregnating teenagers in border communities - Agency
The IPCR said this during an enlightenment programme held on Saturday at Oke-Odan in the Yewa South local Government Area of Ogun State.
The Senior Research Fellow of IPCR, Mr Akangbe Moses, said security agents were compounding the issues in the border areas through the act.
Moses said, “Security agents are causing conflicts in their host communities. Some of them impregnate teenage girls and this has been leading to crises in those communities. This is aside from the usual problems they create.
“This is why we have been preaching women in governance so that you can collectively salvage the situation as mothers. You can contest any political office in your area as a woman, especially when you notice those who have been holding those offices are not doing it right.”

Reverend’s wife burns 9-year-old with iron, as series of abuses including a sexual one is discovered
The woman was arrested along with the reverend, Adebanjo, as the couple were alleged to have subjected the nine-year-old girl to series of physical abuse since she started living with them two years ago.
Sunday Punch learnt that the girl’s travails came to the limelight recently when one of the Adelekes’ two dogs bit her in the chest while she was feeding them.
It was said that the couple did not take her to hospital for treatment which prompted a mandated reporter to inform a child rights advocate, Mrs Toyin Taiwo-Ojo, about the case.
Taiwo-Ojo, a lawyer, told Punch correspondent that apart from the dog bites and mark of iron, there were scars of lashes all over the girl’s body.
She explained that she approached the reverend, who claimed his wife was playing with the victim when the hot iron burned her skin.
She said, “I asked him if the iron is a toy but he was speechless. The woman didn’t tell us what the girl did that warranted such inhumane treatment but the girl said she was punished for bedwetting.
“She said she is from Ajara (in Badagry). According to the girl, the couple lured her to their house two years ago through her mother’s friend. They told the mother that an elderly couple without a child needed somebody to keep their company and they promised to send her to school. That was why her mother released her to the couple
“We have been trying to reunite her with her family. She doesn’t know her surname; she only knows that her father was an Alhaji before he passed on. The suspects are pastors. They used horsewhips to beat the little girl who is about nine years old. There were scars all over her body from several previous beatings.”
Punch correspondent learnt that the state’s Ministry of Youth and Social Development were involved in the matter and the suspects were arrested on Thursday and transferred to the gender unit of the state police command headquarters in Ikeja.
The lawyer said the victim while narrating her experience stated that the couple gave her tough chores to do, including tendering to Adeleke’s aged mother.
She said, “The malnourished child said she had been staying with the couple for the past two years without going to school. Her daily chores include changing the diaper and cleaning of a 90-year-old grandmother, who also resides in the place. She also feeds the two Alsatian dogs in the house and takes care of their kennel. A scar by her breast was a dog bite she sustained four days earlier but the reverend and his wife did not deem it fit to take her to a hospital for anti-rabies and anti-tetanus injections.”
The child rights activist stated further that the girl was taken to a hospital for treatment where a preliminary report revealed that she had been sexually abused.
“A medical test has been carried out on her and the result will be out on Monday. The girl has not revealed who did the dastardly act to her because of the trauma she had gone through. We are still waiting for the outcome of the police investigation to know the perpetrator,” she added.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the arrest of the couple.

After sharing $9m on social media, Japanese billionaire hunts for girlfriend to take on trip to moon
The fashion mogul, 44, is set to be the first civilian passenger to fly around the moon on the Starship rocket.
Planned for 2023, the mission will be the first lunar journey by humans since 1972.

Retired Pope warns against celibacy change
Pope Benedict made the appeal in a book co-authored with Cardinal Robert Sarah.
It comes in response to a proposal to allow married men to be ordained as priests in the Amazon region.
Pope Benedict, who retired in 2013, said he could not remain silent on the issue.
In the book, Pope Benedict says celibacy, a centuries-old tradition within the Church, has "great significance" because it allows priests to focus on their duties.
The 92-year-old says "it doesn't seem possible to realise both vocations [priesthood and marriage] simultaneously".
It is rare for Pope Benedict, who was the first pontiff to resign in almost 600 years, to intervene in clerical matters.
