I want him back, 31-year-old woman stabbed in private parts by husband says

A 31-year-old woman from Lunza Village in Butere, Kakamega County, Kenya is nursing injuries at the Mbale Hospital in Vihiga County after she was allegedly stabbed in the private parts and breasts by her husband on Tuesday, January 14.

Lucy Moraa told K24 Digital that her partner, Ephraim Malenge, attacked her at their Lunza Village home after she declined to give him money to spend on alcohol.

“He [Malenge] came home and told me to give him Ksh40. I said that I did not have the money. He, thereafter, responded, warning: ‘You either give me the Ksh40 I am demanding, or I behead and walk around the streets carrying your severed head’. I thought he was joking, but, nonetheless, I gave him the Ksh40,” Moraa said on her hospital bed.

“He left, but returned home minutes later. He found me carrying a purse, and ordered I give him the money that was in the bag so that he could go drinking. I declined, telling him that the money in the purse was our children’s school fees. It was at that point that he reached for a kitchen knife and stabbed me in the chest and private parts. He even attempted to attack our child with the knife, but the baby was rescued by neighbours,” added the mother-of-two.

The 31-year-old woman claimed that her marriage to Malenge has been marred by physical abuse.

“He has formed the habit of seeking forgiveness every time he wrongs me. After a significant period of marital peace, he, again, goes back to his old habits [of violence]. I am still ready to accept him back, but he has to apologise to my family and assure me that he won’t mete out violence on me, again. I want him in my life because he is the father of my children,” said Moraa.

The suspect is yet to be arrested because Moraa is yet to file a formal complaint with police.

30 killed, 100 kidnapped as gunmen attack Emir of Potiskum

At least 30 people were killed while 100 were feared kidnapped after gunmen opened fire on commuters along Kaduna-Zaria Highway on Tuesday, according to security report and police statement.

The Emir of Potiskum Umar Bubaram was amongst those who sustained severe injuries and still receiving treatment at the hospital as of Wednesday night, police said.

Gunmen opened fire on Mr Bubaram’s convoy around Maraban Jos interchange of the busy highway at about 11:00 p.m., according to security sources.

The emir reportedly lost four of his drivers in the attack.

A police statement on Wednesday night said the men were dressed in military fatigues when they struck on the axis, which has been amongst the most notorious haven for kidnap-for-ransom criminals in recent years.

Kaduna police spokesperson Sabo Abubakar said only six people were killed in the attack while five sustained injuries. He admitted many people were kidnapped but did not give a figure.

The attack marks the latest in a string of violent attacks on civilian population across Kaduna and nearby states in Nigeria’s northwest.

Prince Harry will not fly back to join Meghan in Canada

Prince Harry will not be flying back to join Meghan and Archie in Canada yet as he continues to thrash out the details of the 'Megxit' deal which confirmed the Sussexes would be stepping down as senior royals.

Harry broke cover for the first time tonight in a video on the 'Sussex Royal' Instagram page to reveal the power his Invictus Games had to 'heal families' after the Queen announced the split in the Royal Family on Monday.

The Duke of Sussex posted today's video to announce that the 'story continues' with Dusseldorf in Germany hosting his charity sports competition for wounded veterans in 2022.

Harry's appearance follows the first sighting of Meghan since the crisis talks at Sandringham. The Duchess, who was absent from the meeting, was seen smiling as she boarded a sea plane on Vancouver Island in Canada yesterday.

The Queen had revealed in a deeply personal statement that she had agreed for Harry and Meghan to begin a 'new life' as an 'independent' family, a move which Meghan is understood to have pushed for just 20 months after their wedding.

Prince Harry is expected to remain in the UK into early next week to hammer out the details of this unprecedented arrangement before heading back to join Meghan and Archie in Canada where they have been staying at the £10.7 million mansion where the family spent Christmas.

You can’t declare ‘Amotekun’ illegal… there are similar outfits in the north, Adebanjo tells Federal Government

Ayo Adebanjo, a leader of Afenifere, Yoruba socio-political organisation, says the federal government has no right to declare Amotekun, a south-west security outfit, as illegal.

On Tuesday, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, declared Amotekun as illegal, saying security remains the exclusive preserve of the federal government.

But in an interview with TheCable, Adebanjo said the AGF has no right to make such pronouncement.

The elder statesman said the federal government ought to have gone to the court if it had anything against the outfit.

He said similar civilian organisations are operating in the north, wondering why the one in the south is considered illegal.

“He (Malami) has no right to declare the authority of state governments as illegal. If it is illegal, he should take them to court and beg the court to declare it illegal under the constitution of the country. He has no authority to do so at all,” he said.

“Civilian organisations in Kano and other places in the north, they are not illegal, how are they now illegal in the south? For me I am not surprised, any dictatorial tendency from the federal government is welcomed because I have predicted it so they are only confirming all that I have said about Buhari’s dictatorial tendency.

“The judiciary is established to adjudicate between persons and between governments. I have said it before that this is not a government of the people, it is the military government of the north by Buhari. It is a dictatorship per se.”

Tyler Perry reacts to Oscar snub

The lack of diversity and notable snubs in this year’s Oscar nominations left Tyler Perry annoyed, but he says it’s not worth getting upset because it’s a system that is not going to change.

“There is no need in going back and forth, or fighting, or protesting. It is what it is. This is how it is in Hollywood, and it’s how it will always be,” Perry told The Associated Press after the nominations were announced.

Not only were there no female nominees in directing for the 87th time in Oscar history — a direct snub to Greta Gerwig, director of “Little Women,” as well as several other worthy candidates.

There was also only one person of color, Cynthia Erivo, among the 20 acting nominees.

Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (“The Farewell”) was denied a chance at an Oscar. Globe nominees Jennifer Lopez, for her role in “Hustlers,″ and Beyoncé, for original song ”Spirit” from “The Lion King,″ were also overlooked.

And the Gypsy King hopes it will give him the ‘upper hand’ as he bids to become WBC world heavyweight champ.

Speaking after the first press conference concluded ahead of the big fight, the 31-year-old said: “I’m doing a lot of things I didn’t before.

“I’m eating five/six meals a day, drinking eight litres of water. If it’s gonna give me an edge, I’m willing to try it.

“I’m ma$turbating seven times a day to keep my testosterone pumping.”

Fury, married to wife Paris since 2008 with the couple having five children, then quoted lines from the 2004 hit song by Danzel, titled Pump It Up.

Breaking! Amotekun has come to stay – Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has declared that the establishment of Operation Amotekun by Southwest governors ‘has come to stay irrespective of its legality’.

Soyinka said the supplementary security outfit launched in Ibadan last week, came up as a result of series of meetings by the leaders of the region to curb insecurity issues that the existing security bodies have not been able to put an end to.

The Nobel Laureate prize winner made this known at the ongoing press conference at his Kongi’s Harvest Art Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos, opposing the Justice Minister and Attorney-general of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who declared the security outfit illegal.

“Amotekun is a result of meetings to curb menace in the region,” he said.

“Some people who have been sleeping all this time, taking belated actions while villages are been wiped out are now telling us this…that people do not have right to flush out the evil ones among them which the exiting security outfits have not been able to do.”

“I think they should go back to sleep because Amotekun has come to stay,” he added.

Acting, truly my first love - Temi Otedola

Daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola has stated in an interview that acting has been her first love, and she is happy she is finally at a place she loves. Speaking about her first feature and in a major movie -- ''citation'' produced by Kunle Afolayan, Temi said she was actually introduced to the producer/actor and not the other way round, has it has been speculated the actor sort for her.

Explaining how fate brought her back to her first love, she said:

“I have been watching Mr. Afolayan’s films like forever. From ‘Figurine’ to ‘October 1’, ‘Phone Swap’, and I was actually introduced to him, I told him that from university and through school I have always been into acting and that was my first passion in life and he told me about a script coming out and the lead character is actually a girl of my age and a university student and the story tells a tale of something that is so relatable and relevant to what is happening today, not only in Nigeria but all over the world.”

On why she accepted the role, Singer Eazi's girlfriend said; “the lead character is a girl of my age and in the university while also treating a global issue that confronts women. So it is a story that is close to my heart, and I thought I could really bring that story to life.”

On why she kept this creative side of hers for so long from the public, she said;

“For me, it’s all about timing, so, for me until this movie proposal had come, I don’t think I would have entered into this arena of creative work, but this script is perfect for me. I’m so happy that I waited for this time. With Kunle Afolayan’s film, it means I am starting at the top. So, I’m just so humbled to have been given this opportunity. The message is to tell women that we are hearing their stories, that we believe them. Women are being harassed in several ways.”

Will she leave fashion for acting? The young actress said;

“Both of them are still very close to my heart; I will always be designing and doing fashion, but also, this is my one true love. So I’ll continue acting.”

Another sex-for-marks scandal rocks OAU, as female student records lecturer threatening to fail her over s.e.x

A fresh sex-for-marks scandal is currently rocking the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as a 400-level student of the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Administration, has accused a lecturer, Olabisi Olaleye, of sexually harassing her.

Motunrayo Afolayan, who has since lodged a complaint at the university’s Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies, alleged that Mr Olaleye failed her in ‘Diplomacy,’ course code IRS 305.

The lecturer teaches the course alongside a female colleague, Omolara Akinyemi.

The allegation comes nearly two years after a widely publicised scandal involving another lecturer in the faculty, Richard Akindele, and a student.

Mr Akindele, a professor of Accounting, was dismissed from the university after he was indicted for demanding sex from a female student to help improve her grades.

A federal court later sentenced the disgraced professor to 24 months in prison.

Reliable sources within the university told Premium Times that Ms Afolayan first took IRS 305 during the 2017/2018 academic calendar while in 300 Level but was allegedly failed because he refused to sleep with the lecturer.

During the next academic year, the 2018/2019 academic session, the student registered again for the course but received repeated threats from the lecturer that “she would fail again and again if she refuses to sleep with him.”

A senior official in the faculty, who does not want to be named, said the student sought the intervention of another lecturer in the department, Sunday Omotuyi, on the matter. Ms Afolayan, it was gathered, had feared she could fail again since she was still being pestered by the lecturer.

“But Omotuyi declined to intervene. He said he had approached the same lecturer in 2014 on behalf of another student but Olaleye flared up and insulted him. He even walked him out of his office. He said Omotuyi was too “junior” to talk to him on such matter. He even asked the student to go as far as the office of the vice-chancellor to report him,” the official said.

The official further stated that when other lecturers got wind of the development, they asked for proof of the allegation against the lecturer, and Ms Afolayan played a recorded voice of Mr Olaleye saying – in Yoruba – that, “I promise you would fail this course three times except you sleep with me.”

The recording, Premium Times learnt, was done based on the advice of Ms Afolayan’s friends, who also claimed the lecturer had “tormented” them in a similar manner in the past.

A university source said, “So, she was in Olaleye’s office and just as predicted, Olaleye held her by the hand and began to fondle her. While he was carried away, the lady turned on the voice recording application on her phone and taped all his vulgar words including the threat.”

Ms Afolayan has refused to share the audio record with anyone, saying she was afraid of being subjected to public ridicule.

With officials within her faculty unable to help, she sought outside help, from the Faulty of Law where a female lecturer advised her to report the matter to the university authorities.

As soon as Mr Olaleye learnt that the matter was being escalated, he reportedly released Ms. Afolayan’s result which had been withheld alongside a few others. The released result showed that the student passed.

In response to the student’s complaint, the university authorities set up a probe panel headed by Yetunde Ajibade, the provost of the university’s postgraduate college. Ms Ajibade, a professor, is the first female provost of the college.

The panel has since met with all the concerned parties including Ms Afolayan; Mr Olaleye; Mr Omotuyi, whom the matter was first reported to; Kehinde Olayode, Head of Department, International Relations, among others.

While Mr Olaleye appeared before the panel in November last year, Mr Omotuyi met the panel on January 9.

Premium Times learnt that Ms Afolayan had appeared before the panel accompanied by other female students in the department who also served as witnesses.

Both the lecturer and the student have confirmed the development to Premium Times. But while Mr Olaleye chose to speak about the incident, Ms Afolayan said she had been advised to keep sealed lips until the university makes its verdict public.

Mr Olaleye said he had earlier submitted a written response to a query from the management, where he denied harassing Ms Afolayan.

He said the student had approached him to alter the examination timetable when the rerun course had clashed with another course she takes at 400 level.

“I didn’t know her until the timetable issue came up,” the lecturer said.

“She approached me with two other ladies but I told them I could not help. I only advised them to go and write their 400 level course first, and return to join us in the hall for my course.”

Mr Olaleye said the delay in the release of Ms Afolayan’s result was due to his co-lecturer, who teaches the course with him, being busy with “accreditation issues.”

Iran 'arrests person who filmed plane downing'

Iran says it has arrested the person who filmed the footage showing a Ukrainian passenger plane being shot down by a missile.

It is believed the person being detained will face charges related to national security.

Flight PS752 was brought down after it took off from Tehran on Wednesday last week, killing all 176 people on board.

Iran has said it was shot down by accident and announced the arrest of several people over the incident.

President Hassan Rouhani said his country's investigation would be overseen by a "special court".

"This will not be a regular and usual case. The whole world will be watching this court," he said in a speech.

Mr Rouhani also stressed that the "tragic event" should not be blamed on one individual.

Mail on Sunday defends publishing Meghan's letter to her father

The Mail on Sunday will use evidence from the Duchess of Sussex's father, Thomas Markle, in a High Court battle over the publication of a private letter she wrote to him.

Meghan accuses the paper of misusing her private information, breaching copyright and selective editing.

The Mail on Sunday rejects the claims and says there was "huge and legitimate" public interest in publishing the note.

No date has been set for the case.

Documents submitted to the High Court by the paper laying out its defence show much of the evidence it looks like it will rely upon comes from Mr Markle.

He was at the centre of controversy in the lead up to Meghan's marriage to Prince Harry in 2018.

The documents include text messages sent from Mr Markle to his daughter ahead of the wedding.

"The fact that so much of the evidence appears to come directly from him and that he appears to be co-operating with the paper presents at least the possibility of him being called to testify in court against his own daughter," BBC reporter John Donnison said.

The newspaper has given what BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond describes as a "very robust" response to Meghan's claims.

The paper argues in legal documents that members of the Royal Family, including the duchess, "rely on publicity about themselves and their lives in order to maintain the privileged positions they hold and promote themselves".

It said the duchess "did not have a reasonable expectation of privacy that the contents of the letter were private and would remain so".

"There is a huge and legitimate public interest in the Royal Family and the activities, conduct and standards of behaviour of its members," it said.

"This extends not merely to their public conduct, but to their personal and family relationships because those are integral to the proper functioning of the monarchy."

As evidence that it did not infringe her privacy, the paper says the letter was "immaculately copied" in Meghan's "elaborate handwriting", arguing that this care in its presentation meant she anticipated it would be seen and read by a wider audience.

India to welcome Amazon boss, Bezos with protests

The last time Amazon boss Jeff Bezos was here, he wore a long Indian coat, climbed into a gaudily decorated truck, posed for pictures and promised to invest a couple of billion dollars. He also gave dozens of media interviews. "Your hear all the time that there are so many obstacles in doing business in India, but that's not our experience," he told a newspaper.

Five years on, the world's richest man has arrived on a two-day visit to a much less enthusiastic reception.

A union of small traders who claim to represent tens of millions of brick-and-mortar businesses have planned protests in 300 cities against Mr Bezos, accusing his firm of predatory pricing. They complain that the online giant's now six-year-old retail operation in the country is hurting them badly. Praveen Khandelwal of the Confederation of All India Traders, which is organising the protests, says Amazon's "sinister game and evil designs" have "already destroyed the business of tens of thousands of small traders" in India.

If this was not enough, hours before Mr Bezos's arrival, India's anti-trust regulator opened a formal investigation into the business practices of Amazon and its Indian competitor Flipkart, an Indian e-retailer, mostly owned by Walmart.

The regulator says it is looking into allegations of predatory pricing, the exclusive launch of mobile phones, deep discounting and preferential treatment of selected sellers by the online giants, among other things.
