Nigerian student in her 6th grade at Ukraine medical school commits suicide after school allegedly expelled her

A Nigerian students schooling in Ternopil State Medical University in Ukraine has allegedly killed herself after the school allegedly expelled her.

Badmus Ololade Rafiat, a final year medical student, felt she had no choice after she was expelled from her school for failing to pass her mock exam ahead of her final MBBS.

According to reports, she made attempts to transfer to another school to take the MBBS as other students do, but the school allegedly kept frustrating her and refused to provide the transcript needed for the process.  They allegedly only gave her the option of returning to Nigeria to reapply for a student visa to start all over again.

After her pleas yielded no result and her dean refused to reconsider her case, Ololade wrote a suicide note and took her life on Thursday, January 16th.

The school mourned her and put up a notice on a wall in the school with her photo, saying she killed herself because she was depressed and suicidal. 

But her friends are saying she was never suicidal, and the school made her commit suicide.

Nigerian students in the school are now planing a protest. "Lets meet in Centre @ 12pm," a notice sent out to Nigerian students in the school reads.

Céline Dion's mother, Thérèse dies at 92

Celine DIon;s mother, Thérèse Tanguay-Dion is dead. She was 92.

Dion's management confirmed in a statement to ET that Thérèse, known in Canada as "Maman Dion," died late Thursday after months of battling serious health issues. She was surrounded by her family and friends.

"It is with deep sadness that Feeling Productions announces the death of Mrs. Thérèse Tanguay Dion," the statement reads. "Mrs. Dion died peacefully at home last night, surrounded by her family. The family and loved ones thank you in advance for respecting their privacy during these difficult times. Details related to the funeral will be communicated later."

In addition to Céline, Thérèse was the mother to 13 other children with husband Adhémar-Charles Dion: Denise, Clement, Claudette, Liette, Michel, Louise, Jacques, Daniel, Ghislaine, Linda, Manon, Paul and Pauline. Adhémar died in December 2003 at the age of 80.

Céline, who is currently on her Courage World Tour, has concerts scheduled Friday and Saturday in Miami, Florida. She posted about the loss on her Instagram page, noting that the show would go on, in memory of her late mother.

"Maman, we love you so much," she shared in English and French. "We dedicate tonight’s show to you and I’ll sing to you with all my heart. Love, Céline xx."

The heartbreaking death comes just two days after Céline mourned the four-year anniversary of the death of her husband, René Angélil. The music producer died on Jan. 14, 2016 at the age of 73.

Mother, grandmother and grandfather arrested for locking children in wooden cages

A mum, grandmother and grandfather from Alabama, US, have all been arrested by police for allegedly locking children in cages as Investigators look into reports of possible abuse that went on in the home.

Pamela Deloris Bond, 66; James H. Bond, 69, and Kylla Michelle Mann, 30, were arrested by a team of policemen led by Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones.

The County sheriff's office posted a photo of a wooden crib-shaped cage with a mattress and blanket inside which they believe children lived in.

While at the home, police noticed another wooden cage with locks, and said they greatly believed that the children had been locked in the cage multiple times.

The three suspects have been charged with two counts of aggravated abuse of a child less than 6 years of age and two counts of reckless endangerment. 

While Pamela Bond is charged with one count of tampering with physical evidence.

All five children picked up from the house have been placed in state Department of Human Resources custody.

Pakistan court sentences 86 members of a far right religious party to 55-year prison term each

A Pakistani court has sentenced 86 members of a far right religious party to 55-year prison terms each for taking part in violent protests against the acquittal of a Christian woman in a blasphemy case, party officials say.

The verdicts were announced late on Thursday night by a court in the northern garrison city of Rawalpindi, Pir Ejaz Ashrafi, a senior leader of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA) party, told Al Jazeera.

The 86 TLRYA activists were arrested in November 2018, as the party led violent protests against the acquittal by the country's Supreme Court of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman who was on death row for having allegedly committed blasphemy in 2009.

Days of protests saw TLRYA activists - led by party leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi - block big highways and destroy public property across the country, but mostly centred in the central province of Punjab.

At the time, senior TLP leader Pir Afzal Qadri had called for the judges who announced the acquittal to be killed.

The charges against those sentenced include destroying public property, attacking passers-by and disrupting citizens' everyday life. Ashrafi said the sentences were "harsh" and that his party would be appealing the decision at the high court.

"This is the murder of justice. We are hopeful that they will suspend the verdict in the high court, and our legal team is working on it," he told Al Jazeera by telephone from the eastern city of Lahore, where the TLYRA is based.

Here's why internet has been slow in Africa lately

Internet users across more than a dozen sub-Saharan African nations experienced slow service after two undersea cables to the continent’s western coast were damaged this week.

-The so-called WACS and SAT3/WASC cable systems are in the Atlantic Ocean and connect South Africa and many other African countries to Europe, according to Openserve, a unit of South Africa’s biggest fixed-line telecommunications provider, Telkom SA SOC Ltd. One break is near Libreville in Gabon and the other is in the vicinity of Angola’s capital, Luanda, Openserve said in an emailed statement.

The cause isn’t yet known and a ship is being sent from Cape Town to repair the cables, Vodacom Group Ltd., South Africa’s biggest mobile-network operator, said in reply to emailed questions.


At least 12 countries besides South Africa were affected to at least some degree, according to NetBlocks.org, a non-profit organization that tracks Internet shutdowns and government censorship. Other nations affected include Ghana, Ivory Coast and Cameroon. Vodacom doesn’t know when the cables will be repaired.

In some countries, consumers and businesses can’t send emails or make international phone calls. With parts of the cabling lying deep underwater, it’s unclear when full connectivity will be restored.

MTN Group Ltd., Africa’s biggest telecommunications provider, apologized to customers in Nigeria and Ivory Coast for slow Internet speeds and difficulties in accessing data services. The company, in newspaper advertisements and via Twitter, said the problem was beyond its control.

“This situation is affecting all operators and customers in the region,” a Johannesburg-based spokeswoman said in an emailed statement. “MTN has already begun to restore traffic through other channels and will continue to find alternative routes of connectivity until the situation is resolved.”

South Africa-based Internet Solutions, a unit of Dimension Data Holdings Plc, told customers in Ghana a “major” service impact had started on Thursday afternoon and it didn’t know when services would be restored.

10-year old boy impregnates 13-year old girl in Russia

A 13-year-old schoolgirl has become pregnant by a boy aged ten in Russia, local media reported.

The children study at different schools in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in Siberia but are understood to have been friends since they were younger.

The pregnant girl is planning on keeping the child and her family are supporting her in the decision, according to TBK.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances and the girl's school have said they will be offering every assistance possible.


In a statement the police said: 'On January 13, 2020, the police received information from doctors of the Federal State Budget Healthcare Institution KB No. 51 of the city of Zheleznogorsk that a 13-year-old schoolgirl was pregnant.

'The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Republic of Khakassia have launched an investigation and a decision will follow.'

Little is known about the boy, but social media accounts showed the pair were listed as 'married' on their profiles.

A local paediatrician Nikolai Skorobogatov has expressed doubts over whether the boy is indeed the father.

'Theoretically, this is possible,' the doctor told KRSK. 'I don't know anything about this particular case, but I feel the boy could have been blamed while another has impregnated the girl.

'All this, of course, is very easily verified with the help of an examination, which will certainly be carried out.'

In 2009 the UK was stunned by the case of Alfie Patten, a 12-year-old boy who claimed to have had a child by his girlfriend Chantelle Steadman, then 15.

It prompted a national debate about morality and teenage pregnancy with then Tory leader David Cameron saying it raised 'worrying' questions about modern Britain.

But DNA tests later revealed that Mr Patten was not the father, but a 15-year-old boy called Tyler Barker.

Soldier stabs Kaduna trader to death

There was pandemonium at the Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Central Market, Kaduna, on Thursday as a yet-to-be-identified soldier allegedly stabbed a shoe seller to death.

The soldier, according to an eyewitness, narrowly escaped being lynched.

He was, however, beaten up by traders in the market. The incident was said to have created confusion as many ran helter-skelter.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, confirmed the incident to Punch correspondent on the phone.


Sabo said the incident involved four soldiers, three of whom were at large.

He identified the slain trader as Yusuf.

An eyewitness, who simply identified himself as  Lawal, said trouble started when the deceased trader approached the soldiers to advertise his shoes.

He said no one could say what transpired between the soldiers and the trader, as one of the soldiers pulled out a jackknife and stabbed the victim on his stomach.

“Immediately other traders saw what happened, they pursued and held the one that stabbed the boy and beat him thoroughly,” Lawal said.

The Secretary of the Sheikh Gumi Central Market Union, Alhaji Aliyu Shuaibu(Fancy), who also confirmed the incident, said the soldier was rescued and taken to an undisclosed hospital in the metropolis.

He said immediately the incident occurred, market officials, not wanting the incident to escalate, put a call to security officials, including the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan.

The police spokesman said the soldier at the centre of the incident was brought in unconscious and that he was being treated while investigation was ongoing.

Sabo said, “There was such an incident today(Thursday) involving a group of four soldiers. The soldiers had a misunderstanding with a trader called Yusuf at the Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Central Market which resulted in one of the soldiers removing his jackknife and stabbing the said Yusuf.

“He(Yusuf) was rushed to the Yusuf Dantsoho Specialist Hospital but later confirmed dead.  One of the soldiers was arrested and he is currently undergoing investigation, while the  other three are still at large.”

Jeff Bezos and girlfriend Lauren Sanchez have finally made their romance red carpet official.

The Amazon CEO and richest man in the world  was spotted walking the carpet with the TV personality in Mumbai, India, as part of an Amazon Prime event.

The pair dressed to the nines, with Bezos rocking a marble-patterned black and white tuxedo jacket paired with black tuxedo slacks, while Sanchez stunned in a sultry red and black gown featuring a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit.

The glitzy appearance comes amid a reported investigation into Amazon's business practices in India which is being conducted by the country's Competition Commission, an antitrust regulatory agency, according to the New York Times.

Wike approves N30,000 wage for Rivers workers

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has approved the payment of N30,000 minimum wage for civil servants in the state, effective from January.

A Government House Press Statement signed by Paulinus Nsirim,Commissioner of Information and Communications said the approval was sequel to what was endorsed by the Federal Government.

It was however silent about the commencement date or whether there will be arrears.

Labour unions in the state are bargaining for the commencement date of payment to take effect from April 2019 when President Muhammadu Buhari signed the National Minimum Wage Bill into Law,

The state government argued that it would start from January 2020 so that this year’s budget can foot the bill.

Eddie Murphy thinks if Michael Jackson and Whitney had not made their life all about showbiz, they had probably still be alive

Eddie Murphy has opened up about why he quit Hollywood and he wishes he had persuaded late greats Whitney Houston, Prince and Michael Jackson to have done the same.

Eddie recently returned to stand-up comedy with an appearance on Saturday Night Live but before that, he had given himself a self-imposed ban from Tinseltown.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the 58-year-old revealed how he decided to take a break in 2012 and how he had wished his "contempraries" had done the same.

Eddie revealed: "Maybe about eight years ago, I said it's time to take a break and not really be pushing at movies like I used to.


"Getting it right, and getting it right with the director, and getting it right with the writers, and having everything work together - that takes a lot of effort, you know, and it's strenuous."

Eddie continued to say that there is more to life than work: "My career, or what I am as an artist, that's not at the centre of my life.

"At the centre of my life is my family and my kids. That's the principal relationship, and everything comes after that.

"I have 10 kids, and I'm present, and I'm part of their lives. You got to have some kind of balance with career and personal life."

Eddie first auditioned to appear on SNL when he was 18 and started making films when he was 20, giving him over four decades in the industry.

He said that he needed time out to "just be Dad."

Speaking about the passing of the likes of Jackson, Prince and Whitney, Eddie said: "So many of my contemporaries are dead, like the people that came on the scene when I came on the scene in the '80s," he told the publication.

"The people that I knew around my age - that had impact in their areas - they're mostly... they're gone. Michael... and Prince... and Whitney, those are my contemporaries. And they're gone."

Eddie went on to explain how their careers as artists became "all-consuming".

He continued: "The centre of their whole s***, their life revolved around them as artists. Everything else suffered as a result of that. Your personal relationships, and your finances, and all that stuff. Substance abuse problems.

"All that stuff [happens] because show business can't be what's at the centre. Especially if you get to reach these highest levels, and you're Michael Jackson or you're Prince, or you're Elvis.

"If you're sitting on that, and show business is everything, that's the recipe for early exit."

Son of 'Lord of the Rings' author dies at 95

Christopher Tolkien, the son of Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien, has died aged 95.

The Tolkien Society has announced.

The society, which promotes the life and works of the celebrated writer, released a short statement on Twitter to confirm the news.

The statement said: “Christopher Tolkien has died at the age of 95. The Tolkien Society sends its deepest condolences to Baillie, Simon, Adam, Rachel and the whole Tolkien family.”

Nine oil bunkering suspects handed over to EFCC

The Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, NNS Delta has handed over a motor vessel, MV Salvation and nine crew members allegedly involved in illegal oil bunkering to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Benin Zonal Office for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The suspects are Tamuno Abereniboye, John Gwuene, Simon President, Nice Bien, Daniel Aghovwieokpo and Prince Ogun. Others are Jabu Kimidengiyefa, Daniel People and Olawale Bello.

Captain AV Kujoh who represented NNS Delta at the handing over in Warri stated that the vessel and crew members were arrested by Nigerian Navy Ship Zaria around Escravos for Illegal trans-shipment of about 50,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automative Gas Oil, AGO.

Receiving the vessel and the suspects on behalf of the Commission, Richard Ogberagha, a Principal Detective Superintendent, said the Commission would carry out further investigations and ensure that those found culpable were brought to book.

Juventus head coach Maurizio Sarri said it is "really annoying" that any player has won more Ballons d'Or than superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi moved one ahead of Ronaldo for the Ballon d'Or record, claiming his sixth individual honour in December.

The result came despite Ronaldo helping Juve to an eighth consecutive Serie A title and Portugal win the inaugural Nations League crown.

World’s first transgender children’s doll with p.e.n.i.s underneath women’s clothes spotted on sale in toy store

The world 's first transgender doll has gone on sale in a Russian toy shop.

Pics of the doll  - which features a p.e.n.i.s and dress - have gone viral after being spotted in Planeta Igrushek (Planet Of Toys) shop in the city of Novosibirsk, Siberia.

The images, posted online, show a doll with long blonde hair and female facial features.

And underneath a red and yellow polka dot dress, there appears to be male genitalia.


The doll is the first of its kind spotted in Russia - and thought to be among the first child transgender dolls in the world.

A transgender doll divided opinion in Argentina when it went on sale at Toys R Us in 2018, while in 2019 toy company Mattel announced a gender neutral Barbie doll.

The images attracted opinion on social media, with one writing: "Is it ok to produce toys like that for children?"

Another said: "All they have to do is buy a medical tool kit and the kid can learn how to amputate."

But some people were unimpressed by the forward thinking toy.

One user wrote: "I think it is really terrible what is going on in this child's parent's head.

"Have you considered that it could simply be a manufacturing defect? Or they accidentally put a female head on a male body?"

Another simply wrote: "I believe this is a liberal attempt to change the society."
