Plateau records 5 new cases of Lassa fever

The Plateau Commissioner of Health, Dr. Nimkong Ndam, has confirmed five cases of Lassa fever in the state.

Ndam told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that the patients of the ailment had been admitted in two hospitals in the state, adding that three of them were undergoing treatment; one had completed treatment, while the fifth one had been discharged.

He said Lassa fever was not new in the state because the area had experienced the disease before.

“However, the health personnel are on the ground to handle the situation and they have the required protective kits to wear while treating such cases.

“We are in contact with the hospitals in the state to address such cases promptly and to curtail the spread of the disease. We also have the protective kits required of health workers to wear when treating such cases,” he said.

Lassa fever is transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected Mastomy rats who are hosts of the Lassa virus.

Storing grains and other foodstuffs in rodent-free containers and general hygiene is a preventive measure.

IPOB claims Facebook shutdown Nnamdi Kanu’s page to diminish his popularity

The Indigenous People of Biafra has flayed  Facebook Nigeria for allegedly shutting down the  page of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, in a statement, said  the action was taken by Facebook Nigeria to diminish the growing popularity of Kanu in his cause.

Powerful said the page had endeared Kanu to most people as it was used to expose the atrocities of government.

He said Biafra, during the Nigeria’s Civil War, suffered great denial of media space, and IPOB would not allow a repeat in the 21st century.

Powerful said, “We can confirm that Facebook Nigeria has shut down the page of our leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

“This is not unconnected with the fact that our leader’s page has become a rich resource for those determined to expose the evil regime in Nigeria and enthrone a better life for the masses.

“We mince no words when we say that Facebook Nigeria is more corrupt than the corrupt government they are seeking to protect.

“Biafra suffered immeasurably as a result of denial of media space in the late 60s, a situation we are not prepared to allow in this 21st century.”

Senators 'nap and play' in Trump impeachment trial

US senators have been accused of falling asleep, playing games and breaking other rules during President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.

Jim Risch and Jim Inhofe are among members who have apparently nodded off during the lengthy hearings.

Crossword puzzles, fidget spinners and at least one paper airplane have been spotted with senators.

The trial has heard that Mr Trump's alleged abuse of power threatens American democracy.

The senators are acting as the jury to decide whether the president should be removed from office.

The upper chamber of US Congress prides itself as a hallowed sanctum of decorum.

But some of its members - Republican and Democrat alike - have this week been accused by US media of acting like bored schoolchildren.

The rules call for senators to remain seated during the impeachment trial.

But at least nine Democrats and 22 Republicans left their seats at various times on Thursday, according to Reuters news agency.

They included Democratic White House hopefuls Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet.

Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, defended herself on Thursday after she was spotted reading a book in the chamber.

She tweeted that the tome - How Trump Haters Are Breaking America, by Kim Strassel - "provides good insights into today's proceedings".

"Busy mamas are the best at multi-tasking," she added. "Try it."

Mr Risch, a Republican who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was seen this week slumped motionless with his eyes closed at his desk during the hearings.

A spokesman for the Idaho senator denied he had been asleep, telling the Wall Street Journal he was just listening closely "with his eyes closed or cast down".

Mr Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, was spotted on Wednesday by an NBC reporter appearing to briefly doze off before he was nudged by Senator Todd Young, an Indiana Republican who sits next to him.

Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, was observed leaning on his right arm with his hand covering his eyes for 20 minutes.

On Thursday, Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican, handed out fidget spinners, a children's toy, to fellow senators to help them while away the hours in the chamber.

"I saw somebody grab up a few of them, so they must have some real anxiety going along with this," said Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican. He said he did not require one of the gizmos.

Phones, laptops and tablets are a regular accessory during normal Senate hearings, but all electronics have been banned in the chamber for this trial, leaving many restless.

S.e.x is for straight married couples only- Church of England

The Church of England has today declared civil partnerships between men and women are not as good as marriage.

A statement issued by the House of Bishops today, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, addressed the changes in marriage law for the first time.

The pastoral statement added that marriage, 'continues to provide the best context for the raising of children.'

The bishops defined marriage as 'a faithful, committed, permanent and legally sanctioned relationship between a man and a woman making a public commitment to each other,' and 'central to the stability and health of human society.'

US actress, Annabella Sciorra testifies in court, says Harvey Weinstein brutally r.a.p.e.d her

US actress Annabella Sciorra has testified in Harvey Weinstein's trial that the film producer pinioned and r.a.p.e.d her at her home 25 years ago.

Ms Sciorra, best known for her role in The Sopranos, said Mr Weinstein forced himself into her apartment and attacked her.

"I was trying to get him off me," Ms Sciorra said to the New York jury. "I was punching him, kicking him."

The 67-year-old denies all charges, which include r.a.p.e and sexual assault.

If convicted, he could face life behind bars.

The incident that Ms Sciorra alleges would have happened too long ago to be pursued under New York law.

But prosecutors intend to use her testimony to support their argument that the accused is a s3xual predator.

To do so, they must prove Mr Weinstein committed a serious s3xual offence against at least two people.

Mr Weinstein is charged with r3ping one woman, Jessica Mann, in a hotel room in the New York borough in 2013, and performing a forcible sex act on a second woman, Mimi Haleyi, in 2006.

His defence team said his actions were consensual, including one "loving" relationship.

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri thanks Ronaldo’s mum

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri complimented Cristiano Ronaldo's mother as the Portuguese star extended his scoring streak in a 3-1 win over AS Roma to advance to the Italian Cup semi-finals yesterday morning (Singapore time).

The Portuguese star picked up a Gonzalo Higuain cross after 26 minutes, finishing off from an angle in the Allianz Stadium.

It was the 34-year-old's 12th goal in eight consecutive games in which he has played in all competitions for the Turin giants, but his first in the Italian Cup.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has also scored seven goals in four matches this year.

"I believe that the compliments should be made to his mother," said Sarri of Ronaldo, who has now scored in 15 different club competitions throughout his career.

"He is in super form physically. In terms of explosiveness, he is doing well, he takes great care of the details.

"It is difficult to improve on an individual level.

"We are talking about one of the greatest of all time and I would like to help him win a sixth Ballon d'Or."

Australia fires: US crew killed in air tanker crash identified

Three US firefighters who died when their air tanker crashed while battling blazes in Australia have been identified.

Captain Ian McBeth, 45, first officer Paul Clyde Hudson, 43, and flight engineer Rick A DeMorgan Jr, 44, were killed in New South Wales on Thursday.

The cause of the C-130 Hercules crash is not yet known.

New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian called it an "unbelievable loss" and offered a state memorial.

Officials lost contact with the plane, owned by Canadian firefighting company Coulson Aviation, shortly before 13:30 local time (02:30 GMT).

It crashed in an active fire zone in the Snowy Mountains, south of Canberra, said the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Since September, Australia has battled a bushfire crisis which has now killed at least 33 people. More than 70 bushfires are still raging across NSW alone.

How Oko Oloyun was killed and what police are suspecting...

The Oyo State Police Command said on Friday, that the two Police escorts attached to a popular Yoruba herbal manufacturer, Alhaji Fatai Yusuff, killed by some unknown gunmen are being questioned at the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Iyaganku, Ibadan.

The Command in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi, also revealed that some staff of the deceased, apart from the 2-man armed escorts of Policemen, were being questioned by a team of crack detectives from the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department.

Yusuff, who is also known as Oko Oloyun, was shot while on his way from Abeokuta in Ogun state to Iseyin in Oyo state by unknown gunmen.

Fadeyi said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Shina Olukolu “seizes the opportunity to appeal to any member of the public with credible information not to hesitate in passing same to the Oyo State Police Command to assist in the detection of the crime and apprehension of the offenders.”

He maintained that the two escorts and the staff were being questioned to find and apprehend the fleeing suspects who wrecked the heinous act.

While giving more insights to the killing, Fadeyi said that a report was received by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Igbo-ora that around Akeroro Area on the Abeokuta/Igbo-ora/Iseyin road, the 2-car convoy of the deceased was ambushed shortly after passing through five different Police Stop and search teams along the route.

He added that the 2-man armed escorts of Policemen protecting the deceased engaged the assailants, but that the assailants managed to escape back into the forest after a single shot had hit the deceased who died later of his bullet injuries.

Fadeyi said, “The Commissioner of Police Oyo State Police Command, CP. Shina T. Olukolu wishes to put the record straight on the most unfortunate death of Alh. Fatai Yussuf a.k.a ‘Oko Oloyun’ on Thursday 23rd January, 2020.

“A report was received by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO Igbo-ora that around Akeroro Area on the Abeokuta/Igbo-ora/Iseyin road, the 2-car convoy of the deceased was allegedly ambushed shortly after passing through five different Police Stop and Search teams along the route by yet to be identified assailants who fired at the moving vehicles on the road from the thick forest.

“The 2-man armed escorts of Policemen protecting the deceased engaged the assailants, but they managed to escape back into the forest after a single shot had hit the deceased who died later of his bullet injuries.

“However, an interesting twist to the story was that the deceased probably had earlier detected an alleged book-keeping records fraud in his Lagos office which subsequently allegedly led to the burning/destruction of some financial/book-keeping records.

“In addition to other possible motives, a plausible nexus is, therefore, being suspected between the fire incident and the attack on the deceased.

“Meanwhile, some of the staff and his two (2) Police escorts are being questioned by a team of crack detectives from the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Iyaganku, Ibadan with a view of finding and apprehending the fleeing suspects who wrecked the heinous act.

“The Commissioner of Police, therefore, seizes this opportunity to appeal to any member of the public with credible information not to hesitate in passing same to the Oyo State Police Command to assist in the detection of the crime and apprehension of the offenders, while at the same time, assuring members of the public that the Police is on top of the situation and working with other Police formations/units to ensure that the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A. Adamu, NPM, to crack this case as quickly as possible is complied with to the letter.

“In addition, it is our resolve that no matter how long it takes, the Commissioner of Police promises to bring the culprits to justice within the shortest possible time”.

Armed men kill 6 Malian soldiers in an overnight attack

At least six Malian soldiers were killed and several wounded in an overnight attack in central Mali, the army said on Thursday.

The troops came under fire from "unidentified armed men" in Dioungani, an area in the country's volatile Mopti region near the border with Burkina Faso, the army said on Twitter.

It gave a "provisional toll" of six dead and several wounded without giving further details.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Two soldiers were killed in the Mopti region on Tuesday when their convoy hit a roadside bomb.

Mali has struggled to contain an armed uprising that erupted in the north in 2012 and has killed thousands of soldiers and civilians in the years since.

More than 140 Malian soldiers reportedly died in attacks between September and December alone.

The conflict has engulfed the centre of the country and spread to neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger - despite the presence of 4,500 French troops in the Sahel region, plus a 13,000-strong UN peacekeeping force.

China building 1,000-bed hospital in 6 days to treat coronavirus patients

China is embarking on an ambitious project to build within six days a new 1,000-bed hospital to treat victims of a new coronavirus in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Chinese state media have said they are mobilising machinery to get it ready by early next week, Reuters reports.

A total of 25 people in China have died from the virus and more than 800 have been infected, the government said on Friday, Jan. 24.

The World Health Organisation has declared it an emergency, but stopped short of declaring the epidemic of international concern.

The virus is believed to have originated in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, with Dec. 31 thought to be the start of the spread.

Prefabricated buildings will make the new hospital.

It is being built around a holiday complex originally intended for local workers.

It will be set in gardens by a lake on the outskirts of the city.

Building machinery, including 35 diggers and 10 bulldozers, arrived at the site on Thursday night.

The new facility should be up by Monday morning.

“The construction of this project is to solve the shortage of existing medical resources” the report said.

“Because it will be prefabricated buildings, it will not only be built fast but it also won’t cost much.”

Dasuki makes first court appearance after release from detention

The immediate-past former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, on Thursday, made his first court appearance after his release from four-year-long detention.

The ex-NSA was kept in detention for that period, in spite of the bail granted him on numerous occasions by various courts.

On Thursday, he appeared before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja for his trial on charges of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms instituted against him in 2015 by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The ex-NSA who appeared more relaxed than he looked in his previous court appearances, opted to remain standing in the dock even when the judge offered that he should sit.

There are two separate sets of charges of alleged diversion of funds earmarked for the procurement of arms meant for fighting Boko Haram in the North-East pending against him at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.

But none of the two other cases had come up since December 24, 2019, when he was released from the custody of the Department of State Services.

The judge subsequently struck out the applications and adjourned trial till March 11 and 12.
