Lassa Fever Kills One In Ogun

One person has died in Ogun State following the recent Lassa fever outbreak in parts of the country. It is the first case of Lassa fever to be reported in the state.

Channels TV gathered that the victim, 26-year-old Titilayo Akinsola, had been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-aba in Abeokuta, on Wednesday and after a series of tests, she was diagnosed with the virus.

According to the head of the Public Relations Office of the hospital, Segun Orisajo, Akinsola eventually died after failed attempts by the medical team to save her life.

“Yes she (Akinsola) was rushed to the hospital four days ago and series of tests confirmed that she had Lassa fever,” he said.

“Our medical team did everything possible to save her life but unfortunately she died.”

Orisajo, however, asked members of the public not to panic, insisting that the hospital, in conjunction with the state government, is doing their best to prevent further spread of the disease.

“The hospital management is in touch with the Ministry of Health to work together to put everything in check. There’s no cause for alarm.”

Days prior to the incident, the state government had dismissed a report by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), which listed Ogun among states with Lassa Fever in the country.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker in the statement, insisted that there was no case of Lassa fever in the state.

She, however, noted that the government had put its health officials on red alert in the event of a suspected case.

Dozens killed as heavy rains cause floods, landslides in Brazil

At least 30 people have been killed and 17 are still missing after two days of heavy rain led to widespread floods and landslides in Brazil's southeast, according to civil defence officials.

More than 2,500 people were evacuated from their homes in the hardest-hit Minas Gerais state as the downpours drenched the region over Friday and Saturday.

The deaths were reported in the regional capital, Belo Horizonte, and across the state.

The Brazilian weather service said on Saturday that Belo Horizonte had received 171.8 millimetres of rain in just 24 hours - its biggest total for one day in more than 100 years.

State Governor Romeu Zema is expected to fly over the affected areas on Sunday to evaluate the damage.

More rain is in the forecast in the coming days across Minas Gerais and for Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

The period from December to April is generally the wettest across southern Brazil.

INEC cancels rerun in eight Cross River polling units

The Independent National Electoral Commission has canceled the rerun election in eight polling units of Afafanyi/Igonigoni Ward in Cross River State.

The electoral body explained in a statement that it took the decision as a result of the violence recorded in the ward.

It added that the Election was not conducted in eight polling units of the riverine area due to kidnap of the Supervisory Presiding Officer and hijack of election materials by gunmen.

INEC says the kidnapped victim later regained freedom from his abductors while the gunmen refused to release the sensitive and non-sensitive materials in their possession.

Items stolen include nine smart card readers, ballot papers, and several result sheets among others.

INEC confirmed that no life was lost during the incident, but a policeman was injured.

Tragedy: Jealous man stabs girlfriend to death in Bauchi

Tragedy struck in Bauchi on Friday when a jealous man, simply identified as ‘Solomon’ stabbed his girlfriend, Patience Zakkari, to death for picking a phone call from another man.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent reports that the incident occurred around 1.30 am in the house of the deceased located at gwallameji area of Bauchi metropolis.

Narrating to NAN how it happened, a source who pleaded anonymity recounted how the deceased narrated the incident to him before she gave up the ghost.

He explained that the deceased and her boyfriend (Solomon) who were popularly known to be in a romantic relationship by most people in the area, had a heated argument when the deceased received a phone call from a male friend in the middle of the night.

“She narrated to me before she died that everything happened at about 1:30 am on Friday morning.

“She said she received a phone call from just an ordinary male friend and her boyfriend (Solomon) got jealous, started harassing her verbally, and that as she was trying to explain to him, he pounced on her and started hitting her.

“She took a bottle, hit him on the head in self defence because the beating was too much for her, and the man picked up a knife in response and stabbed her at the back.

“She said she lost a lot of blood before she was rushed to a clinic in the morning where she was treated and brought back home in the evening, when she narrated the incident to me.

“Unfortunately, when I left the place, I heard that the wound degenerated and she was rushed to a hospital where she eventually gave up,” narrated the source.

Another source, Mercy Cirfat, told NAN that Solomon, who was living two blocks away from his girlfriend’s, had taken to his heels after carrying out the heinous act, and is now at large.

She said that the deceased was a National Diploma (ND) graduate from the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi.

DSP Kamal Abubakar, the state Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the incident to NAN, adding that the owner of the clinic where she died, had been arrested.

He also assured that the command was on the trail of the culprit and would soon be apprehended to face the wrath of the law.

“I can confirm to you that the incident is true; we got the information from a good samaritan that this was what happened in Gwallameji.

“When the incident happened, without informing the police, her friends took her to a clinic for treatment because the boyfriend stabbed her twice.

“However, the clinic also treated her without informing the police and discharged her the same day.

“When the thing became worse, they took her back to the clinic where she was put on a drip and eventually gave up.

“We have arrested the owner of the clinic and the staff that treated her because they did not inform the police.

“We have swung into action and the case is under investigation; we are on the trail of the suspect and anybody involved; they will all be brought to justice,” said the PPRO.

Federal Government warns against buying foreign films

The Executive Director of the National Films and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Adedayo Thomas, has warned Nigerians to desist from buying foreign films.

He made the statement at the public burning of unwholesome and unapproved movies and video works worth N100 million in Lagos. According to Thomas, majority of those films imported are unapproved and illegal, The Nation reports.

Some of the items destroyed included multiple-in-one films, unclassified foreign, local and pornographic films, all in DVDs and CDs format. According to him, many of the burnt products were pornographic with other obnoxious materials illegally imported into the country.

“Most of these foreign films are uncensored, smuggled into the country without rightful permission; therefore, it must be totally banned. It’s against the growth of this country to ship in foreign films without censorship and permission of the property right of the owner. This has caused reductions in our rating, in term of the intellectual property right.

The ones allowed are the ones in the cinema because we are able to manage the cinema and censor it. Therefore, parents and guardians must ensure their children/wards consume only films and video works classified by the National Film and Video Censors Board.” he said

He revealed that the board has arrested five offenders at Alaba Market and charged them to court while some other retailers were placed on training so as to sensitise them on the kind of products they are supposed to be selling.

Thomas said the burning exercise was recently held in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Benin, Sokoto and it will be a continuous exercise so as to stamp out the distribution of these items to safeguard our future as a nation and to also send a strong message to miscreants who feast on other people’s sweat.

Nurse makes EXPLOSIVE revelation, says 90,000 already infected with coronavirus in China

A nurse wearing a protective suit and face mask treating the sick in Wuhan has made an explosive revelation claiming 90,000 people have already been infected by the coronavirus in China – far more than the figure of just 1,975 issued by government officials.

Her warning from the heart of the outbreak emerged as the Chinese government faced accusations of censoring criticism of its handling of the disease in order to play down the crisis.

The outbreak of the new virus originated in China, where it has infected more than 1,970 people and killed 56, and has spread worldwide.

Speaking in a video footage seen online, the unnamed woman says: ‘I’m in the area where the coronavirus started. I’m here to tell the truth. At this moment, Hubei province, including Wuhan area, even China, 90,000 people have been infected by coronavirus.’

Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying the country is facing a grave situation, held a politburo meeting on measures to fight the outbreak, state television reported on Saturday.

The country is facing a 'grave situation' where the coronavirus is “accelerating its spread,” Xi told the meeting, which took place on the Lunar New Year public holiday.

Hardwork doesn't pay but KILLS, Reno Omokri warns

Reno Omokri has warned his followers on micro-blogging website -- twitter, telling them hardwork is good but does not pay. He warned that as a matter of fact hard work kills. But was fast to tell them the secret -- SMARTWORK. His tweet...

''HARD-WORK is not necessarily a virtue, though it‘s not bad. HARD-WORK doesn’t PAY. It KILLS! It ages you before your time. If HARD-WORK PAID everyone will want to be a labourer. What PAYS, is SMARTWORK. A SHARP ax cuts a TREE faster than a DULL one.

I read an actor’s write up about a poor, hardworking and honest man who treats his wife like a Queen. Not possible! If you are poor, hardworking and honest, you can treat your wife well. But even in Scripture, it takes MONEY to look after a Queen!''.

Several killed as Iraqi forces raid Baghdad protest camp

Iraqi security forces raided Baghdad’s main protest site on Saturday and tried to eject protesters in southern cities, firing tear gas and bullets killing four people and wounding dozens more, police and medical sources said.

The new push to end the sit-ins and restore order came hours after populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who counts millions of supporters in Baghdad and the south, said he would halt his involvement in anti-government unrest.

Sadr’s supporters, who had bolstered the anti-government protesters and sometimes played a role in protecting them from attacks by security forces and unidentified gunmen, began withdrawing from sit-ins early on Saturday after Sadr’s announcement.

Clashes then took place after authorities began removing concrete barriers near Tahrir Square where anti-government demonstrators have camped out for months, and across at least one main bridge over the Tigris River in the capital, Reuters reporters said.

Major crackdown on protestors in Iraq underway. Muqtada al-Sadr’s support was critical but it was withdrawn after he struck a deal with the government & Iran’s proxies - they have carte blanche to neutralise the protestors. Huge boost for Iran & its allies

In the southern city of Basra, security forces raided the main anti-government sit-in overnight and deployed in force to stop protesters gathering there again, security sources said.

Police arrested at least 16 protesters in the city, they said.

Jeff Bezos' girlfriend disclosed their affair in texts to her brother who sold them to the National Enquirer for $k

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have evidence that the brother of Jeff Bezos' girlfriend provided his intimate text messages to her sibling, who sold them to the National Enquirer, according to a new report.

Prosecutors have obtained documents including a May 10, 2018 text message sent from the phone of Bezos' girlfriend Lauren Sanchez to her brother Michael Sanchez, containing her intimates texts with Bezos, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal said it had reviewed the text messages as well as a $200,000 payment Michael Sanchez received from the Enquirer under an October 2018 contract.

Prosecutors obtained the documents in an ongoing investigation into Bezos' allegation that the Enquirer tried to extort him by threatening to publish his nude pictures, as well as whether his phone was hacked. Bezos himself has long pushed the suggestion that Saudi Arabia was involved as the Enquirer's source.

The latest revelation comes after a report by Bezos' investigators, endorsed by U.N. officials, indicated that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia had sent malicious code in a WhatsApp message that compromised the cell phone of Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post.

Saudi Arabia denies hacking Bezos' phone. The Enquirer claims that Michael Sanchez was their source for the bombshell story that revealed Bezos' affair, while Michael Sanchez denies he had anything to do with it.

'In September of 2018, Michael Sanchez began providing all materials and information to our reporters,' a spokesman for American Media told the Journal.

The spokesman said that any suggestion that a third party, such as Saudi Arabia, 'was involved in or in any way influenced our reporting is false.'

Michael Sanchez told the Journal in an emailed statement: 'With spoon-fed lies and half-truths, Wall Street Journal keeps getting it wrong.'

In January 2019, the Enquirer exposed Bezos' extramarital affair with Lauren Sanchez. The same week he abruptly announced a separation from his wife of 26 years, and has been romantically linked with Lauren Sanchez ever since.

Included in the tabloid's exposé was a quote from the Bezos text message that the Journal says Lauren Sanchez had sent to her brother in May 2018.

Another text message sent from Lauren Sanchez's phone to her brother's on July 3, 2018 includes a photo of a shirtless Bezos, according to the Journal.

After his affair exposed by the Enquirer, Bezos and his investigator, Gavin de Becker, began to push the suggestion that Saudi Arabia may have played a role in obtaining Bezos' private messages.

Bezos texts published by National Enquirer
'I love you, alive girl. I will show you with my body, and my lips and my eyes, very soon.'

'I want to smell you, I want to breathe you in. I want to hold you tight.… I want to kiss your lips…. I love you. I am in love with you.'

'I miss you. I want to kiss you right now and tuck you in slowly and gently. And maybe in the morning wake you up and not be quite so gentle with you.'

'Your energy and ideas and competence and SPIRIT turn me on. You make me better. You're meant for me.'

'I am so full of love for you. My heart is growing just so it can have room for you. It's bigger than it's ever been and still swelling.'

'I want to hold you tight.… I want to kiss your lips…. I love you. I am in love with you.'

'You know what I want? I want to get a little drunk with you tonight. Not falling down. Just a little drunk. I want to talk to you and plan with you. Listen and laugh … I basically WANT TO BE WITH YOU!!! Then I want to fall asleep with you and wake up tomorrow and read the paper with you and have coffee with you
