Gunmen abduct Abuja train passengers in Kaduna

Gunmen on Saturday attacked vehicles conveying travellers, who alighted at  Rigasa railway station from Abuja, injured some of them and abducted several others.

News Agency report (NAN) gathered that the attack occurred along the road linking airport road from the railway station at about 8pm. A similar attack occurred on Friday at about the same time on the same road after passengers left the train station heading to their homes in Kaduna and other places.

Already, some families of those abducted have been contacted by the kidnappers demanding N20 million ransom.

One of those shot by the kidnappers is at the moment in critical condition at the 44 Army Reference Hospital Kaduna receiving treatment.

Two nabbed for stealing car from Lagos church

The police have arrested two suspected car thieves, Bamidele Adebayo and Hakeem Taofik, for allegedly stealing a Toyota Corolla car at the Shagari Estate in the Ipaja area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the suspects removed the car around 1pm from an unnamed church’s car park, while the Sunday service was ongoing.

A member of the church, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch Metro that the robbers pretended to be members of the church, sat and listened to the sermon.

He stated that the suspects might have targeted the vehicle, known the owner and when the owner was likely to go out, adding that otherwise it would have been almost impossible for them to come into the church’s car park and remove the vehicle.

The source stated, “We couldn’t believe it when the owner of the vehicle wanted to go home after the service and he went right to where he parked the car but couldn’t find it. It was like a joke and a thorough search was conducted on the church’s premises and outside.

“When we couldn’t see the vehicle, the pastor had to call the police, who conducted their investigation.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, said the car was stolen around 1pm on Sunday, January 19, 2020, while the church service was still ongoing.

He added that when the police were informed about the incident, they used available technologies to track it to Ijagba village in Sango Ota after the Obasanjo Farms, Ogun State.

Others who died alongside Kobe Bryant NAMED

Two coaches and five others died alongside Kobe Bryant and his daughter when their helicopter crashed Sunday morning have been named.

Initial reports claimed five people had been killed, but the death toll was raised to nine - including the pilot, named locally as Ara Zobayan. Among those also killed was John Altobelli, a baseball coach at Orange County College, his wife Keri and daughter Alyssa.

Girls basketball coach Christina Mauser was also killed in the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation but the control tower at Burbank Airport was contacted by the pilot shortly before 10am local time. At around 9:40 AM the helicoter turned south, towards a mountainous area, flight tracker data shows. Five minutes later it hit the hillside at 1700 feet, near the home of Kourtney Kardashian.

In air traffic control audio taken shortly before the crash the pilot is told he is 'too low' for radar tracking although this does not appear to be part of a mayday or distress call. The pilot appears to be getting guidance through the bad weather before the unfortunate crash.

Son attempts to chop off mother's private part in Lagos over suspected adultery

A woman's private part has nearly been chopped off with a knife by her 22-year old son, Joshua Adetutu in Lagos over suspicion of adultery.

According to PM Express, the incident happened at Odobanjo Street, off Governor’s Road, Ikotun area of Lagos, where his mother, Mrs. Jennet, resides with her own mother.

It was gathered that Joshua locked his mother inside room, held her hostage and then brought out a knife to chop off her private part after he reportedly pushed her down to carry out the act.

However, Jennet was lucky after their neighbours came to her rescue and then contacted Police from Area M Command, Idimu, Lagos.

Joshua was arrested and detained at the Command for interrogation. While being interrogated, he claimed that his mother was disgracing him and does not respect herself in the area.

Jennet was married and had Joshua with other children before she separated from her husband and started living on her own. Then Joshua was living with his father before he allegedly defrauded the father and was remanded in Badagry prison. The mother, Jennet rallied round, got him released and he started living with her and his grandmother.

It was while living with his mother that he discovered that she was having male visitors, who he suspected were sleeping with her. When it became unbearable, he attempted to chop off the mother’s private part which has landed him in trouble.

The Police found his action culpable and charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrates Court for the alleged offence.

He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Supol Kenneth Asibor, asked that since he pleaded not guilty, the Court should give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.O. Shomade, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till 26th February, 2020.

Oko Oloyun's son breaks silence over father's death

One of the children of popular trado-medical practitioner, Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, said his father was killed hours after he received a call that his workers burnt some important documents in his Igando, Lagos office.

The son said the family was notified of the burnt files around 7am on Thursday, about 10 hours before the alternative therapist was killed by some gunmen on the Abeokuta-Igbo-Ora-Iseyin Road, Oyo State.

Speaking with Punch on Saturday, the son who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, confirmed that Oko Oloyun was buried on Friday evening.

He said, “I was in school when I got a call that my father was shot. On getting home, I learnt he is dead.”

The son added that his late father uncovered fraud in the company following complaints from some investors who had difficulty relating with the management over their investments.

He said, “The investors know him well and trust he would never steal their money. He was open and there were times he would call us (his children) and tell us what was going on. He engaged an auditor in December 2019 who discovered that there was a fraud.

“In the morning of the day he was assassinated, some of his workers set fire to important office records. He was in a hotel in Ogun State when he got a call from my mother around 7am that some files had been burnt. I don’t know the amount involved in the fraud but it must be something huge for those involved to return.”

According to him, those who killed his father not only hurt the family but also dealt a huge blow to many people benefiting from him.

He described the late herbal practitioner as a loving and generous person who liked making people happy.

“He would rather leave something for you rather than fight you.  The police have promised to investigate and bring all the people involved to book. God will expose them. He was preparing for an event on Sunday (today) in Akure, Ondo State when this happened,” he added.

NSCDC arrests pastor for child trafficking in Osun

The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a pastor, Isaac Akanasema, for child trafficking.

The pastor, a Tiv from Benue State, who resides in Ede, Osun State, the command alleged, took custody of under-aged children and placed them in care of foster parents as domestic workers.

The command, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Afolabi, on Sunday, claimed that Akanasema admitted to have brought the children from Benue State.

The pastor, however, explained that the children were released to him by their parents, who were mostly farmers displaced by the farmers/herdsmen’s crisis in the state.

The statement read in part, “Akanasema claimed to have done this in good faith and not for monetabenefits. The only agreement he usually made with the foster parents was for them to take care of the children and be responsible for their education.

“He was said to have begun this in 2014 and the ages of the children involved ranged from 10 to 14 years. When asked whether they were well treated and cared for, the children answered in the affirmative and agreed to stay with their foster parents till they would complete their education.”

Commenting on the development, the NSCDC Commandant in the state, Adeyinka Oguntuase, advised parents to avoid the mistake of giving birth to children they would not be able to care for.

Four die as suicide bomber hits Borno mosque

Four persons were said to have died during a suicide attack on a mosque in Gwoza, southern Borno State.

Gwoza was, at the peak of the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency, the administrative capital and caliphate of the terrorist group.

It was learnt that the suicide bomber ran into a group of worshippers during an early morning prayer.

A source, who could not ascertain if it was a male or female, said the suicide bomber was lost along with three worshippers in the mosque.

He said several other persons were injured in the explosion which shook the mosque.

Another source in one of the humanitarian communities in Borno State told The PUNCH in confidence, “I received Information of suicide bomb attack this morning in Gwoza, the attack was said to have happened in a mosque. Three people including the suicide bomber were killed.”

However, a top security agent, who did not want his name mentioned, said it was only the suicide bomber that died.

He equally disclosed that 13 worshippers had injuries and were assisted to a health centre for treatment.

Start strike immediately your salary is stopped, ASUU tells lecturers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has directed its members nationwide to go on strike as soon as the Federal Government stops lecturers’ salaries.

The ASUU chairman of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Dr Adebayo Oni, said this in a telephone interview with one of Punch correspondents on Sunday.

He said there had been a standing order to commence strike once “members’ salaries are stopped.”

Oni said, “By the decision of NEC,  we don’t have to hold  any  formal meeting at all .

“The decision of NEC is that, immediately our salaries are stopped we will invoke the principle of no pay no work.

“We don’t need to wait for any directive from NEC and an injury to one is an injury to all.

“Immediately salaries are  paid and we discovered that other members of staff are paid and our  members are not paid, we will automatically begin the strike.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's aunt reappears after six years

The aunt of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has been seen in public for the first time since the execution of her husband in 2013.

Kim Kyong-hui is the daughter of North Korea's founder, Kim Il-sung, and sister to former leader Kim Jong-il.

She had not been seen since her husband, Chang Song-thaek, was executed by her nephew for "acts of treachery".

But on Sunday, state media released a photo of her enjoying new year celebrations.

The photo, released by North Korea's state news agency KCNA, showed Kim Kyong-hui seated next to Kim Jong-un and his wife in a crowded theatre in Pyongyang. She was also included in the list of top-ranking officials in attendance.

Oliver Hotham, editor at NK News, which covers events in the reclusive nation, said the reappearance was a surprise.

"Many North Korea watchers had assumed that Kim Kyong-hui had gone into exile or even been killed in the wake of her husband's death," he told Reuters.

Her appearance seated next to the leader suggested she had retained - or regained - significant influence, he added - possibly as an advisor.

"It's also a reminder of how weird and brutal North Korea is, after all she's sitting next to the man who ordered her husband's execution."

Kim Kyong-hui and her husband Chang Song-thaek were major players within the North Korean state at the time of their nephew's ascension to power nearly a decade ago.

Mr Kim succeeded his father as leader in 2011, and it was widely believed that Mr Chang was one of his mentors during the transition.

But two years into the new leader's rule, Mr Chang was removed from a meeting by armed guards in dramatic fashion. Official statements claimed he had confessed to plotting to overthrow the state, and that he had been immediately executed.

Many observers of the North Korean state believe he may have been considered a threat to the young leader, and killed as part of a purge.

Rockets hit US embassy in Baghdad amid protests

At least three rockets struck the US embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Sunday. One rocket hit the embassy cafeteria while two others landed a short distance away, a source told AFP.

At least three people were injured, security sources told Reuters. This would be the first time in years that staff have been hurt in such attacks.

No group has claimed responsibility but the US has blamed Iran-backed military factions in Iraq in the past.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi condemned the attack, stating that the continuation of such acts could "drag Iraq into becoming a battlefield".

The US State Department said: "We call on the Government of Iraq to fulfil its obligations to protect our diplomatic facilities."

Woman dies in Australian Day lamington-eating contest

A woman has died in Australia while taking part in a contest to eat as many lamingtons as possible.

The woman, aged 60, is reported to have had a seizure during the event at a hotel in Hervey Bay, Queensland, to mark Australia Day on Sunday.

Contestants had earlier been filmed speed-eating the lamingtons, a traditional sponge cake covered in chocolate and desiccated coconut.

She was given CPR at the scene and taken to hospital but later died.

Witnesses said the woman had crammed one of the cakes into her mouth when she appeared to get into difficulties.

Footage has emerged showing other patrons of the pub cheering on the eaters, who have glasses of water next to them, before the accident.

The Beach House Hotel in Hervey Bay posted a message on Facebook expressing condolences to the family and friends of the woman, who has not been named.

They thanked the ambulance service for their "prompt and professional response while this tragic incident was unfolding".

Eating competitions are a popular game during Australia Day, a national holiday marking the arrival of the first Europeans to Australia.

Teen banned from graduation because of his haircut

A teenage boy has been suspended from school and told he will not be walking at his graduation because of his haircut.

DeAndre Arnold, 18, from Texas, was told his dreadlocks violated the dress code and was given an ultimatum - cut them off or miss walking across the stage with his peers.

The policy at Barbers Hill High School prohibits hair that touches the collar, ears or in the face, and he was told to change it over the Christmas break if he wanted to come back to school.

But, DeAndre's mum claims his hair doesn't break the policy as he always has it tied up.

After multiple meetings with school officials and an unfair ultimatum, DeAndre told KRIV he decided not to cut his hair and was punished with in-school suspension.

It was only at this point that DeAndre was given the news that he wouldn't be able to walk the stage with his peers at his graduation unless his abided by the school dress code.

And DeAndre family stands by his decision, insisting that he will not be cutting his hair too.

DeAndre's father is Trinidadian, so hair is at the forefront of his culture and heritage.

Gary Monroe of the United Urban Alumni Association also said: "DeAndre [and] his family should not have to go through this. But I expect it from a board that has zero diversity”.

Both the school board and Greg Poole, superintendent, refused the appeal and claimed that their issue hasn't been raised against DeAndre's dreadlocks, but the length of them.

Greg claimed: "There is no dress code policy that prohibits any cornrow or any other method of wearing of the hair. Our policy limits the length. It’s been that way for 30 years.”

But DeAndre isn't giving up there. With the help of his supporters and family, they're planning to take the school board to the federal court with 48 hours if they do not offer a solution.

DeAndre's father said: "I won’t stand for anybody bullying my child. He has rights. All he wants to do is graduate."

Leah Sharibu’s father reacts to reports that she has welcomed a baby

The father of abducted Dapchi Schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, has reacted to the news making the rounds that his daughter has welcomed a baby and has been married off to a commander of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

In a phone conversation with Channels Television’s correspondent on Sunday, Mr Nathan Sharibu said he would rather not make any comment on the issue.

He added that his primary concern is to see his daughter return alive and will, therefore, not give any credence to any rumours.

News that she had given birth, as well as her alleged marriage to a Boko Haram commander, started making the rounds after Journalist, Ahmad Sakilda, who is believed to have access to the insurgents announced in a tweet that the abducted schoolgirl is now a mother.

The tweet read: “Why, I wonder, do we pretend that leaving Leah behind won’t result in pregnancy? Since the terror group announced condemning her to slavery, is there any step or collective focus on preventing similar occurrences? She’s a mother, but I don’t know about the gender of the baby,”.

Leah had been abducted from her school – Science Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19, 2018, along with over 100 other schoolgirls.

Although the others were later released, she was held back on the grounds of refusing to denounce her religion – Christianity.

The Christian Association of Nigeria and several other human rights groups from across the world have continued to campaign for her release.

Imo senatorial senatorial candidate shot by his aide

An operative of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Sunday shot the 2019 senatorial candidate of the Action Alliance in Imo North Senatorial District, Ndubuisi Emenike.

The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed that the incident had been reported to the police.

The incident took place around 5 pm during a victory party for the All Progressives Congress candidate, Miriam Onuoha.

The APC candidate had been declared by Independent National Electoral Commission as the winner of the rerun election in Okigwe North Federal Constituency held on Saturday.

However, the victory party hosted at the APC’s candidate house at Umunachi in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state was aborted after the NSCDC officer attached to the AA senator mistakenly shot his boss.

It was gathered that he was shooting consistently into the air and mistakenly shot Ndubuisi Emenike.

The victim fell and lost consciousness and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, St Joseph’s Hospital, Umunachi, before he was later rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, in an ambulance.

One of the sources said, ” Ndubuisi Emenike has been shot by one of his security aides. He was shot during APC victory party at Isiala Mbano LGA. He was shot at his lower abdomen by his aide, an NSCDC officer. This is very tragic and very unbelievable. We pray he makes it. The incident has shattered our victory party.”
