Leah Sharibu’s father reacts to reports that she has welcomed a baby

The father of abducted Dapchi Schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, has reacted to the news making the rounds that his daughter has welcomed a baby and has been married off to a commander of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

In a phone conversation with Channels Television’s correspondent on Sunday, Mr Nathan Sharibu said he would rather not make any comment on the issue.

He added that his primary concern is to see his daughter return alive and will, therefore, not give any credence to any rumours.

News that she had given birth, as well as her alleged marriage to a Boko Haram commander, started making the rounds after Journalist, Ahmad Sakilda, who is believed to have access to the insurgents announced in a tweet that the abducted schoolgirl is now a mother.

The tweet read: “Why, I wonder, do we pretend that leaving Leah behind won’t result in pregnancy? Since the terror group announced condemning her to slavery, is there any step or collective focus on preventing similar occurrences? She’s a mother, but I don’t know about the gender of the baby,”.

Leah had been abducted from her school – Science Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19, 2018, along with over 100 other schoolgirls.

Although the others were later released, she was held back on the grounds of refusing to denounce her religion – Christianity.

The Christian Association of Nigeria and several other human rights groups from across the world have continued to campaign for her release.

Has he complained to you? – Buhari speaks on relationship with VP

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the opinion of Theophilus Danjuma, a retired general, is not more important than that of millions of Nigerians who voted for his reelection last year.

Mr Buhari made this comment in an exclusive interview with The Interview by email released in Abuja on Saturday.

Asked if he was concerned about the vote of low confidence expressed by Mr Danjuma during a recent book launch in Ibadan, Mr Buhari said, “And what is the vote of confidence of Nigerians in me, as expressed in the polls last year? That is what matters more, not the opinion of one man.”

Mr Danjuma had said if he says what he knows about the goings on in the government, Nigerians would lose sleep.

The comment has been viewed in some quarters as an expression of lack of confidence in Buhari’s government, and a blow from a man who is widely believed to have been one of Mr Buhari’s major financial pillars.

The president, however, said his re-election was a vindication of his voters’ confidence and support for him and his government’s policies.

On his relationship with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Mr Buhari said things were “perfect”, between them.

He was asked to rate his relationship with his deputy on a scale of one to ten. But the president replied, “Perfect. Or has he complained to you?”

In a press release on Sunday, the MD/Editor-In-Chief of The Interview, Mr. Azu Ishiekwene, said, “This interview, published on our website: www.theinterview.ng is a window on what the President is thinking about some of the most important issues of his second term so far, from the Economic Advisory Council to the rule of law; and from his relationship with his deputy and 2023 to the country’s debt profile.”

He also commented on the insinuation that a “cabal” runs his government; his promise to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty; and criticisms that his claim that he is now a “reformed democrat”, is fake.

Sanwo-Olu orders full scale investigation into Mushin market fire disaster

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a full-scale investigation into the cause of the fire incident that gutted the popular Amu Plank Market in Mushin.

The Governor, who gave the order when he visited the market that was razed by fire on Friday, allayed the fears of the traders that the government would take over the market.

He assured the victims of the fire incident, which gutted about eleven houses and goods worth over 10 billion, of his administration’s assistance, adding that the government will help to rebuild the market.

The traders who spoke at separate interviews appealed to the Governor to support them to go back to their businesses and help in rebuilding the market.

Sanwo Olu, who was accompanied by his deputy, Dr Femi Hamzat, and members of his cabinet, said relevant government authorities have been mobilised to take inventory of the situation and report back to his office.

The Governor, who lamented the huge losses recorded in the market inferno, said: “This is a rather very unfortunate incident, nobody ever imagined this amount of destruction to happen in this market. We will also further start a full investigation into the remote causes of this fire incident so that we can plan in future how to forestall incident like this.

“After the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) and other agencies have finished their physical process we will come back with Ministry of Physical Planning to take inventory of the various store owners in this place and also sit with our market leaders to see what kind of lasting solution that we can bring about in markets like this.”

“We will do enumeration of the houses affected by the fire incident. Then the government will go back and see what support it can render. We thank God that it is only goods that were lost, no life was lost. Because we cannot equate the life of anybody to any amount of goods and services,” the Governor said.

Channels TV gathered that the victim, 26-year-old Titilayo Akinsola, had been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-aba in Abeokuta, on Wednesday and after a series of tests, she was diagnosed with the virus.

According to the head of the Public Relations Office of the hospital, Segun Orisajo, Akinsola eventually died after failed attempts by the medical team to save her life.

Dozens killed as heavy rains cause floods, landslides in Brazil

At least 30 people have been killed and 17 are still missing after two days of heavy rain led to widespread floods and landslides in Brazil's southeast, according to civil defence officials.

Narrating to NAN how it happened, a source who pleaded anonymity recounted how the deceased narrated the incident to him before she gave up the ghost.

He explained that the deceased and her boyfriend (Solomon) who were popularly known to be in a romantic relationship by most people in the area, had a heated argument when the deceased received a phone call from a male friend in the middle of the night.

“She narrated to me before she died that everything happened at about 1:30 am on Friday morning.

“She said she received a phone call from just an ordinary male friend and her boyfriend (Solomon) got jealous, started harassing her verbally, and that as she was trying to explain to him, he pounced on her and started hitting her.

“She took a bottle, hit him on the head in self defence because the beating was too much for her, and the man picked up a knife in response and stabbed her at the back.

“She said she lost a lot of blood before she was rushed to a clinic in the morning where she was treated and brought back home in the evening, when she narrated the incident to me.

“Unfortunately, when I left the place, I heard that the wound degenerated and she was rushed to a hospital where she eventually gave up,” narrated the source.

Federal Government warns against buying foreign films

The Executive Director of the National Films and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Adedayo Thomas, has warned Nigerians to desist from buying foreign films.

He made the statement at the public burning of unwholesome and unapproved movies and video works worth N100 million in Lagos. According to Thomas, majority of those films imported are unapproved and illegal, The Nation reports.

Some of the items destroyed included multiple-in-one films, unclassified foreign, local and pornographic films, all in DVDs and CDs format. According to him, many of the burnt products were pornographic with other obnoxious materials illegally imported into the country.

“Most of these foreign films are uncensored, smuggled into the country without rightful permission; therefore, it must be totally banned. It’s against the growth of this country to ship in foreign films without censorship and permission of the property right of the owner. This has caused reductions in our rating, in term of the intellectual property right.

The ones allowed are the ones in the cinema because we are able to manage the cinema and censor it. Therefore, parents and guardians must ensure their children/wards consume only films and video works classified by the National Film and Video Censors Board.” he said

He revealed that the board has arrested five offenders at Alaba Market and charged them to court while some other retailers were placed on training so as to sensitise them on the kind of products they are supposed to be selling.

Thomas said the burning exercise was recently held in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Benin, Sokoto and it will be a continuous exercise so as to stamp out the distribution of these items to safeguard our future as a nation and to also send a strong message to miscreants who feast on other people’s sweat.
