The Forward Operating Base (FaOB) of the Nigerian Navy in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Friday declared wanted, one Iwatan Bamitale and 35 others, said to be members of a gang allegedly masterminding criminal activities in the coastal areas of the state.
The FOB alleged that Bamitale, a native of Ilaje Local Government Area, and his gang were responsible for several cases of kidnapping, sea robbery, illegal bunkering, cultism, rape and killings in the area.
Commodore Danjuma Ndanusa, the Commanding Officer of the FOB, told journalists in Igbokoda, that the Navy could no longer fold its arms and watch criminals turn the coastal areas to a “volatile terrain for the law abiding citizens.”
Ndanusa alleged that Bamitale, an ex-militant, who claimed to be have repented during the amnesty programme, “engaged in all sorts of nefarious activities in the riverine and coastal areas.’’
The Navy boss also alleged that Bamitale and his gang had been dispossessing local fishermen of their outboard engines and valuables as well as causing havoc to vessels plying Warri/Escravos/Ondo/Lagos and Ogun states.
He said: “On Oct. 27, 2019, Bamitale and his gang kidnapped five merchant vessel captains from Escravos and brought them to an unknown hideout in Awoye in Ilaje Local Government Area. It took the intervention of the FOB to rescue the victims.
“Intelligence reports have it that the kidnappers who killed four Nigerian Navy personnel and abducted three foreign nationals on board MV AMBIKA on Jan. 2, 2020 at Agge Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, were on their way to link with Bamitale and his cohorts before the FOB foiled their plan and rescued the victims on Jan. 8, 2020.
“Intelligence report also have it that the rifles of the four Navy personnel killed on Jan. 2, 2020 are in the possession of Bamitale’s gang as cache of arms and ammunitions are in their possession.
“Also, several cultist killings and rape cases in Igbokoda and its environs were reportedly masterminded by Bamitale and his cohorts.”
Ndanusa also said that three members of Bamitale’s gang: Odun Ogunse (Akaba), Sunday Adeojo (Gatuso) and ThankGod Edema (Adono) had been arrested by the FOB and handed over to the Department of State Security Services (DSS) for further investigations.
The Navy boss listed the remaining gang members on the wanted list as: Mayowa Iletuwa (Commande

Facebook plans to take down posts spreading false claims and conspiracy theories about the deadly coronavirus in an unusually aggressive effort to tackle misinformation.
The social media giant said it will remove content with bogus claims about how to cure or prevent the virus such as the idiotic idea that drinking bleach will get rid of it.
“We will also block or restrict hashtags used to spread misinformation on Instagram, and are conducting proactive sweeps to find and remove as much of this content as we can,” Kang-Xing Jin, Facebook’s head of health, wrote in a Thursday blog post.
Facebook will target claims flagged by health officials that could harm users who believe them, with a focus on claims that discourage people from getting treatment or “taking appropriate precautions,” Jin said.
The move came after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global health emergency. It has killed 213 people in China, spread to 15 other countries and prompted the US State Department to warn Americans not to travel to China, where the outbreak started.
Facebook’s announcement marked a bold step to combat misinformation by a company that has drawn fire for allowing political campaigns to run advertisements containing false claims.
Facebook said its outside fact-checkers will also keep working to debunk false information about the virus. The company restricts the spread of content that the fact-checkers determined to be false and sends notifications about their findings to people who have shared or try to share such posts, according to Jin.
The conspiracy group QAnon has reportedly spread a potentially deadly theory about the virus as it has sickened thousands of people and roiled global financial markets.

Federal Government has made a U-turn on its determination not to pay January salary of the staff of the federal universities, polytechnic and colleges of education, thereby aborting the nationwide strike billed to commence on Monday February 3.
It is gathered that the Federal Government has decided to halt its enforcement mechanism for a month with a view that the issues surrounding the scheme would have been sorted out.
The rift between the academic staff of the federal institutions in Nigeria is as a result of the refusal of the academic staff to enroll under the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS, scheme, claiming that it does not accommodate the peculiarities of the academic staff.
In a letter from the office of the Accountant General of the federation, signed by the Director of IPPIS, Olufehinti, O. J, dated January 21, 2020, and directed to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, the Minister was ordered not to release funds for payment of January salaries of the tertiary institutions.
Sequel to this, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, directed its members nationwide to go on strike as soon as the Federal Government stops lecturers’ salaries.
However, a twist was introduced to the saga as staff of the universities today received their salaries for the month of January.
It is gathered that the staff of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, and University of Ibadan, UI, have been paid January salaries.
Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie has revealed that she can never take up a romantic role in movies anymore.
She spoke on GoldMynetv recently during an interview on her new movie, “The Legend Of Inikpi.”
Johnson-Okojie said age is telling on her and that it was better to leave such romantic roles to younger girls in movies.
When asked: “Are you open to playing roles that require getting Romantic with another actor on set?”
She replied: “Age is telling on me, I just calculated that if I had to do that, what will the younger girls do? When you go past a certain level, you try to go above that level to do better.
“You don’t need people to tell you what is right or wrong. For me, I just felt I have gone past that level, I am answerable to many people, my husband, my kids; my daughter’s getting older and she gets hold of my phone, she begins to google such.
“Kids are very inquisitive and I don’t want them to question me in any way or have something in their mind. I don’t think I want to do that.
“My sense of maturing and judgment is better now and I now know better; the errors I have made in the past are things that I would not do now, some of the choices I have made in the past are things I would not do now.”
Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has appealed to President Donald Trump to reconsider the United State’s travel ban on Nigeria because of the two nation’s long standing relationship, saying he should not punish Nigerians as a result of President Muhammadu Buhari’s gross inefficiencies.
Trump, on Friday implemented his threat to restrict the ability of immigrants to travel to the United States from Nigeria and five other countries, with the visa ban taken effect from 22 February.
However, Atiku, while reacting to the development on Saturday said he received with sadness the policy of the government of the United States of America to place Nigeria on its travel ban list.
He said while he understood the reasons given by the Trump administration (the failure of the Muhammadu Buhari led administration to share information and to address issues of terrorism), the ban did not take into account the pro-American sentiments of the Nigerian public and the solidarity previous Nigerian administrations have had with the United States.
“I urge the government of President Donald Trump to consider the history of US-Nigerian relationships. Nigeria was one of the few African nations that joined the US-led coalition during Operation Desert Storm between 1990-1991 when the United States championed the liberation of Kuwait.
“The Trump administration may also consider the pivotal role Nigeria, in partnership with the US, played in bringing peace to Liberia, an American sphere of influence, that now enjoys democracy because Nigerian blood and money paved the way for peace in that nation,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria had also consistently voted in support of the United States and her allies at the United Nations and other multilateral world bodies, saying this “is even as we are perhaps the biggest trading partner that the United States has in Africa, even where we had alternatives.”
He added that Nigerians love the United States and had been a major force for the positive development of that great nation, as 77% of all Black doctors in the United States were Nigerians.
“Nigerians are also the most educated immigrant community in America bar none. Surely, the US stands to benefit if it allows open borders with a country like Nigeria that is able to provide skilled, hardworking and dedicated personnel in a two-way traffic.
“The current Nigerian administration may have its deficiencies and deep faults, but the Nigeria people ought not to be punished for their inefficiencies. Once again, I call on President Trump to consider adopting measures that individually target those in government who have failed in their duties, rather than target the entire Nigerian population,” he said.

President Donald Trump has implemented his threat to restrict the ability of immigrants to travel to the United States from Nigeria and five other countries. It visa ban will be effective from 22 February.
According to reports from Washington D.C, Trump will sign a proclamation approving the restrictions on Friday afternoon.
The proclamation will curb the ability of citizens of Nigeria, Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan and Tanzania to get certain immigration visas, according to officials with the Department of Homeland Security and State Department, but it is not a blanket travel ban.
The officials cited national security concerns in identifying those countries, saying those governments do not meet requirements for information-sharing and passport security.
The announcement comes just over three years after Trump first announced he would impose a travel ban targeted at several Muslim-majority nations. An altered version of that ban was later upheld by the Supreme Court, and travel from Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, North Korea, Venezuela and Yemen is still restricted.

It was learnt that influential persons were mounting pressure on the police to release Oba and sweep the matter under the carpet through bargaining for settlement, but the police had insisted on ensuring justice for the victim.
Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa were having busy schedules battling to save the life of Atia, who was said to be in shock when she was told her leg would be amputated to save her life.
A visit to the hospital revealed that Ati was in critical condition as she screamed intermittently in pains with blood dripping from her swollen leg.
Narrating the incident, the victim said: “On the day of the incident, we had an argument and he called me and asked me to come outside of our gate to get the rest of my things in his car. He said he was driving to our area at Ox-Bow Lake to come and give me my things since I was no longer interested in the relationship.
“He eventually showed up. He came down from his car, reached for the passenger seat, opened the door brought out two bags and handed them over to me. I opened the bag and I figured out my things weren’t complete, and I told him some of my things were not there and that I would come and pick up the rest of my things.
“At this point, he started screaming saying he would not want to see me close to his house. But I insisted I would come to take other things he did not bring to me.
“At this point, he was already in his car. He started raining abuses on me calling me unprintable names. I couldn’t take it. So, I responded. The next thing, he drove his car into me with speed. He hit me against our gate, held me there and did not reverse his car despite the fact that I was screaming in pains.
“He later reversed and I fell to the ground and he zoomed off. My neighbours, who watched what happened screamed for help and came to my rescue.
