20 die in church service as they rush for ‘blessed oil’

At least 20 people died and over a dozen injured in a stampede during a church service at a stadium as the victims were rushing to get anointed with blessed oil.

Hundreds of people had packed the stadium in northern Tanzania, on Saturday evening in Moshi town near the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and crushed each other as they rushed to be blessed with “blessed oil”.

“Twenty people died and 16 others were injured in the incident,” Moshi district commissioner Kippi Warioba told Reuters.

Five of those killed were children, he said.

Pastor Boniface Mwamposa, a.k.a bulldozer, has been drawing huge crowds by promising prosperity and cure for disease to worshippers who walk on what he describes as “blessed oil” during his church services.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise due to the size of the crowd and dark conditions when the stampede occurred.

“The incident took place at night and there were many people, so there is a possibility that more casualties could emerge. We are still assessing the situation,” Warioba said.

Tanzania has seen a rise in the number of “prosperity gospel” pastors in recent years, who promise to lift people out of poverty and perform what they call miracle cures.

Shehu Sani breaks silence, speaks on detention at EFCC... what he went through

Senator Shehu Sani, back home from a month long detention in the cell of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Saturday recounted his ordeal in custody.

The former senator from Kaduna Central claimed he was thrown into an underground cell and forced to declare his assets by operatives of the EFCC.

He described his detention as unfair, unjust and “a clear breach of my fundamental rights and hence stands condemned.”

He said: “During my unjust stay in the EFCC cell, I was subjected to traumatizing interrogations; my houses and offices were searched.

“They compelled me to declare my assets, they tried to subject me to polygraph lie detector tests, my accounts were blocked, and my phone was seized, all in the name of fictional $24,000 or $25, 000 extortion.

“Any Information planted in the media by the EFCC spokesperson while I was in their custody about me is false and nothing but bacterial and fungal infested concoctions, typical of their style.

“Our country will continue to be at the bottom strata of the transparency International index as long as our anti-graft agencies only use their might and arsenal to crush ants while lacking the courage, the heart, and the liver to confront the snakes, the vultures and the hyenas of the ruling establishment.

“They can frame me, detain me but can’t silence me. I shall abide by all the conditions of my bail and appreciate the courage, compassion, and wisdom of the court in granting me bail.”

Whatsapp will no longer work on these devices

WhatsApp recently bade farewell to Windows Phone. The giant chatting app is now ready to do the same with some Android and iOS devices. This is not surprising as there have been talks about it for quite a while.

Starting from February 1, 2020. WhatsApp will no longer work on phones running Android 2.3.7 or iOS 7 (and earlier). So, if you are using an Android phone running that Android version or earlier, then WhatsApp will stop working on your phone. The same applies if you are using an iPhone 4 or an earlier model.

When WhatsApp pulled the plug on Windows Phone, the app no longer started. In fact, it was impossible to access the chat history.

So, you may want to save a backup of your chats if your phone is still running any of the old Operating Systems. That way, you will have your important conversations intact upon switching to a more updated phone.

My husband stinks, he does not shave, woman seeking divorce tells court

A 20-year-old woman in India has filed an application with the authorities seeking a divorce from her husband for not maintaining a hygienic lifestyle.

The woman, Soni Devi, from Bihar’s Vaishali district claimed in her application that her 23-year-old husband, Manish Ram, stinks “because he does not shave, take a bath or brush his teeth regularly.”

Taking action on the complaint filed by her, the State Women’s Commission (SWC) gave a two-month ultimatum to her husband to mend his ways or face the legal action for not complying with the orders.

SWC membe, Pratima Sinha, said that the 20-year old woman approached the commission recently and said she wanted a divorce from her husband.

“I was taken aback by reasons that was cited for seeking divorce,” the official was quoted as saying.

In her petition, Soni said she married Manish, who is a plumber by profession, in 2017.

“My husband stinks as he does not shave and bathe for nearly 10 days at a stretch. Moreover, he doesn’t brush his teeth. He also doesn’t have manners and follow etiquette,” she alleged.

“I don’t want to live with my husband anymore. I can no longer bear the humiliation. Kindly get me rid of this man … he has ruined my life,” woman said.

Soni’s husband, however, said he did not want a divorce and wanted to live with her, adding that he would try his best to improve his lifestyle.

12 members of gang who kidnap kids for sale meet waterloo

The operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have smashed a child trafficking syndicate, which specialised in abducting little children from their homes and selling them off.

According to  authoritative sources, 12 of the suspects have been arrested and  six of the abducted children rescued by the IRT operatives.

It was gathered that  members of the syndicate in several states of the  country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, operated in several groups, one of which involved a couple, Ifeoma Ebony and Emmanuel Onyekwere, who went around the country stealing children and middlemen, who would buy the stolen children from the couple and in turn  sell to people in dire need of children.

It was also disclosed  that Ebony, a mother of two, and her hubby, Onyekere, allegedly abducted several children from their homes in Abia, Enugu and Edo states who and sold them to their buyers some of whom were identified as Blessing Nwankwo, Chioma Nike and one Onwa, whose real names are yet unknown.  Each of the stolen children, we learnt, was sold for between N250, 000 and 450,000.

They were said to have run into trouble after they allegedly stole two children from their parents at Tunga Maji and Gwagwa areas of Abuja respectively  and sold them to Nike for N300,000 each. The suspect’s day of reckoning began when the father of the child stolen at Gwagwa area of Abuja, identified simply as Olobo, reported the abduction of his child to the police and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, directed his operatives at the IRT, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, to go after the Abductors.

A crack team of IRT operatives from the Abuja office were then detailed to crack the syndicate. The operatives set to work by first debriefing Olobo, who disclosed to them that Ebony and her husband, Onyekwere, rented an apartment in the compound where he(Olobo resides with his family.

The couple, according to him, soon became close to his wife, who had a one-year-old baby.?He said one week after staying with them, Ebony, who pretended to be assisting his wife, carried her(his wife’s) child, deceived her that he wanted to go and  plait her hair and before they knew what was happening, Ebony and her husband had absconded with their daughter.

Another source disclosed that based on the information which  Olobo provided  about the suspects, the IRT operatives launched  a man-hunt for the suspects whom  they trailed to Asaba, Delta State.

They were promptly arrested. On being interrogated, they confessed to the crime and aided the operatives to  arrest  their alleged receivers, namely Nwakwor and Nike, who normally sold the abducted  children to people who needed them.  The source also identified other suspects arrested as Onyinye Benjami, Ngozi Okoli,  Nwokocha OkoliNdiya Kalu and Esther Ihiediwa.

Real Madrid beat Atletico to move six points clear

Zinedine Zidane’s double substitution at half-time transformed the Madrid derby on Saturday as Real Madrid edged past Atletico 1-0 to move six points clear at the top of La Liga.

Karim Benzema scored the winner at the Santiago Bernabeu after Zidane’s decisive intervention turned a contest that Atletico had dominated into another comfortable Real Madrid victory.

Vinicius Junior, one of the substitutes, was a key to the goal.

Second-place Barcelona can cut the gap back to three points by beating Levante at home on Sunday but Atletico now trail the leaders by 13 points.

While Diego Simeone’s side were excellent in the first half, they were yet again blunt in front of goal and then failed to respond when their opponents found a different gear.

This is Atletico’s fifth game without a win. The worry is that on this form, they should worry not about the title race but about missing out on Champions League qualification.

It is a far cry from pre-season when Atletico thrashed Real 7-3 and many were tipping them as serious challengers.

Anyone who opposes Amotekun would not survive the wrath of the gods - Gani Adams

Are Ona kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams has disclosed that people of southwest would not tolerate any form of threat from any individual or groups over its decision to safeguard the region.

He added that the masses in the region would stand by the South West governors in their bid to rid the region of criminality through the Western Nigeria Security Outfit codenamed “Operation Amotekun”.

He spoke at the South-West Security Stakeholders Group summit at The Grand Place event centre Osogbo on Friday.

Adams, who convened the meeting said anyone who opposes the Amotekun initiative would not survive the wrath of the gods of the land.

He urged the different groups who were involved in local security not to be bothered by the states government inability to engage everyone for the outfit but to prioritise curbing insecurity in the region.

He said no state government has the capacity to engage above 1000 locals for the outfit, but stressed that the challenge of insecurity is a task for the entire populace.

The Yoruba generalissimo emphasised the need for all the groups to consider socio-economic effect of insecurity as a reason to get involved in the project rather than emphasising material gains.

“We want everyone out there to know that the people of this region would not tolerate any form of threats from any individual or groups in relations to the issues of insecurity and the birth of Amotekun”.

“As you have seen events unfolding in recent times that the people of the southwest are behind the governors on the Amotekun project. Whoever opposes it would die mysteriously and the gods of Yorubaland would soon visit its wrath on its betrayers”.

It is nauseating that a group, Miyetti Allah was giving orders that Amotekun should not be allowed to stay in the region.

“We are using this medium to tell any group with criminal tendencies to leave the region. Yoruba is not known for hostility, the race is accommodating and we love to live in peace and harmony with other race, but we should not be pushed to reacting to criminality against our people, such as kidnapping, banditry, destroying farms and raping women”, he said.

He frowned at the imbalance in the nation’s polity, wondering the rationale behind the existence of security outfits in some parts of the country, while it is termed illegal in other parts.

He said it is pertinent for security groups not to take laws into their hands, but work with the police and other security agencies in ridding the nation of criminals.

According to him, for centuries, Fulanis have herdsmen in southwest, they have even become an integral part of the society, but stressed the need to check those who under the guise of herdsmen involve in criminal activities across the region. “Amotekun has exposed imbalance in the structure of Nigeria, while Hisbah, civilian JTF thrive in the northwest and east, why would Amotekun be different?

“We are not against those outfits because even in the United kingdom, a central Police system is not practised because it cannot take care of the numerous challenges, which is why Forest Guards, Train station police, University police exist with the central Police structure. It is obvious in Nigeria that the police, as they are, have failed and cannot secure Nigerians anymore”, he added.

While speaking on the need for unity in the region, Adams stressed the need for the masses to be united against the divisive tendencies of the elite, saying it is the only way to prioritise the interest of the masses as he added that no elite is interested in the welfare of the common man.

His words, “The elites are always united to fight for their cause, not for the interest of the masses. they only fight because of contract or political gains. The unity of the masses is the only weapon

Man charged with murder of two women in East London found dead in freezer

A man has been charged with two counts of murder after the lifeless bodies of two women were found in a freezer in east London.

Zahid Younis is charged with murdering Mihrican Mustafa,38, and Henriett Szucs, 34, nine months after they were found dead at a property in Canning Town.

Scotland Yard launched a murder probe after the women’s clothed bodies were found fused together in a small chest freezer in April.

Mihrican Mustafa was a missing mother-of-three who had not been seen for months before she was found dead.

Henriett Szucs was a Hungarian national who had been in the UK for several years but was of no fixed address. She had last been heard from in summer 2016, the Metropolitan Police said.

When the bodies were found, the case made national headlines and sent shockwaves through the Canning Town community.

Post-mortem examinations showed they both suffered multiple injuries.

Det Ch Supt Richard Tucker previously said: ‘The launch of any murder investigation is naturally of concern to the local community.

‘We have borough officers in the area supporting colleagues from the Homicide and Major Crime Command as they investigate the full circumstances.’

Younis will appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on February 14.

On May 1, 2019, Younis was charged with two counts of preventing the lawful and decent burial of a dead body. He appeared at Kingston Crown Court on May 29.
