Senate prepares to acquit President Trump and end impeachment process

The US Senate prepared on Wednesday to acquit Donald Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, ending the impeachment process and further clearing the skies over the White House as the president angles for re-election.

The Senate was scheduled to vote separately on the two articles of impeachment beginning at 4pm. The vote was prefaced by a third day of speeches by senators arguing their views.

“When the framers wrote the constitution, they did not think of someone like me as being a United States Senator,” said Democrat Kamala Harris of California, urging Trump’s removal. “But they did envision someone like Donald Trump being president.”


“Donald Trump is going to get away with abusing his position of power for personal gain, and falsely claim he’s been exonerated,” Harris said. “He’s going to escape accountability because a majority of senators have decided to let him.”

An out-of-reach two-thirds majority of senators would be required to remove Trump from office. Trump would become the third president in US history to be impeached and then survive a Senate trial.

Even before his acquittal, Trump was enjoying a run of positive political news. At his State of the Union address Tuesday night, he touted strong economic data and new international trade deals, skipping mention of impeachment.

Another OAU lecturer suspended over sexual molestation

The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have suspended another lecturer, Mr Monday Omo-Etan, over alleged sexual molestation of a 19-year-old female student of the university’s Centre for Distance Learning.

Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the University management dealt with another case of sexual harassment, less than three weeks when a lecturer of the Department of International Relations, Mr. Olabisi Olaleye, was investigated and suspended.

According to him, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, expressed its zero tolerance against sexual harassment.

“The management has reiterated its commitment to the total eradication of any form of sexual harassment, molestation or other social vices.” he said.

Kanu’s kinsmen send warning to IPOB members, stay away from his parents burial

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra have been declared personae non gratae at the burial of the parents of Nnamdi Kanu, their founder.

The Afaraukwu community in Umuahia North council area of Abia State, home town of the Leader of Kanu, handed out the warning on Tuesday, warning IPOB members to keep away, appealing for peace at the burial.

Kanu’s younger brother also echoed the warning.


The burial of His Royal Highness Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and his wife, Ugoeze Meme Sally Kanu is slated for 14 February in their country home, Isiama Afaraukwu community in Umuahia local government area of Abia state.

President General , Afaraukwu community, Chief Ikechukwu Ndubueze, who briefed the media on the preparations for the burial, said the community wants a peaceful burial for their late monarch and his wife.

“What we are doing is a traditional burial. The entire Afaraukwu community wants a peaceful burial. We have been meeting with the security agencies in the state. What we are doing is not an IPOB affair, we are only burying our late monarch and his wife. They should allow us bury our dead. Afaraukwu is a peaceful community.

19-year-old Yusuf Ali pushes girl off balcony for rejecting his rude advances

A teenager is facing a lengthy prison sentence after he shoved a girl over a fourth-floor balcony for spurning his advances and stabbed two people.

Yusef Ali, 19, was hosting a party with his friend at a luxury flat in Empire Square East, Bermondsey, in south London on August 4 last year. However, Snapchat video from the scene showed him becoming disrespectful and aggressive during the party.

The victim, 18, arrived with her friends and Ali started making inappropriate advances towards her. He put his hand in the thigh rip of her jeans and aggressively placed his arm around her neck saying ‘this is what I do in the bedroom’.

He became involved in a scuffle with a group who arrived at the party. As they fled he took a knife and stabbed two guests in the melee. The girl frantically hit a lift button to escape, but Ali rushed at her and pushed her over the internal balcony.

She fell 40 feet, breaking her neck and lower back, leaving her needing several weeks in hospital and spent some time in a wheelchair.

Ali was arrested as he tried to leave the building and he has now been convicted of wounding with intent, affray and possession of a bladed article. A jury at Croydon Crown Court found him not guilty of attempted murder.

Prosecutor Kathryn Iyer said: ‘This was a senseless act of violence during a party that went badly wrong.

‘Ali claimed he did not push the victim and did not see who did. But unlike every other person who walked down the steps, he did not stop to look at the victim in distress on the floor, rather he pulled his T-shirt up over his face and left the building just as police officers were walking in.

‘The victim in this case was extremely lucky to have survived the fall. I hope she continues in her recovery and gains a sense of closure following this conviction.’

Detective Constable Tom Waller said: ‘Ali did not care who he injured that night and was clearly intent on harming anyone in his path.

‘Those at the party were left terrified and we are grateful for those who have provided their own witness accounts and had to re-live what happened.

‘Thanks to them and the dedicated work of our officers, Ali has been brought to justice and is now likely to face a significant time in prison.’

Woman gets biggest surprise ever, as her boyfriend turns her birthday into their wedding day (photos)

This is the moment a woman found out she was getting married hours before her wedding - after her long-term boyfriend secretly arranged an 80-person strong ceremony behind her back.

Dave Griffin, 38, picked Sofie’s dress, bridesmaids and venue - but luckily she loved it all.

He was assisted by all her mates and her mum, Carolyn, who took her to a bridal boutique and encouraged her to try on a frock, saying: "It might be the only time I get to see you in a wedding dress."

Sofie and Dave married in June last year on her 30th - despite previously claiming she wouldn’t marry past the age of 29 as it was so old.


Sofie, 30, from Rhyl, north Wales, explained: “Dave really had planned the perfect day, down to the last detail. He had tracked down my old school pals to be my bridesmaids, he had ordered a white Bentley.

“He had even found my dream wedding dress – with a little help from my mum."

She continued: “I had absolutely no idea at all, though I did become a little suspicious because he was spending so much time out of the house.

“Apparently at one point I actually said to him: ‘Anyone would think you’re planning a wedding.’ but it was just a quip. I didn’t think that for a second.”

She even got into a row with him the night before the wedding - after he revealed he would be away on her birthday.

“Dave announced he was working and would be away overnight, and I was really cross because it was the night before my birthday,” she admitted.

“I realised he wouldn’t be there to see me open my presents and we had words before he left.”

Sofie, a self-confessed ‘control freak’, said despite making no decisions relating to her wedding she loved it.

“It was a fairytale,” she added.

The newlyweds met in their local pub in October 2011, getting together months later and having baby Evan in August 2012.

But they never married despite Sofie being keen.

“Our friends got married," she said. "I was a bridesmaid once. Dave was best man three times. It made me really long to get married.

“We went to so many weddings and I’d watch the happy couple making their vows and I was so happy for them – but I really wished it could be me too.

“The years went by and I just thought we’d never get around to it. I thought I’d be single for good.

“I always said I’d never get married after turning 30 too. I felt that was too old.”

Due to turn 30 in June last year, Sofie decided to throw a party.

But her plans went on the back-burner during a busy spell at work.

Soon after, Dave had a dream in which Sofie’s late grandfather, Terry, appeared to him and urged him to marry her.

The vision was enough to set the wheels in motion.

So, secretly Sofie’s mum, Carolyn, managed to lure her out on a shopping day.

Sofie continued: “Mum had had a busy time on the family farm so I thought I was doing her a favour, agreeing to a day of shopping and pampering.

“We passed a bridal shop. Mum said: ‘This might be the only time I ever see you in a wedding dress.’

“I went in and tried on a dress then thought nothing of it – because I knew there was no chance of me getting married.”

Also behind the scenes, cars, venues and flowers were being booked.

Policeman detained for killing man in Lagos commits suicide in cell

A policeman has reportedly hanged himself in a cell at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

The policeman identified as Eze, was said to have been arrested after he allegedly shot dead a man.

“He was brought to the state CID for investigation and prosecution.

“But he hanged himself in the cell around 2am today. He was attached to the Dangote factory and shot a man dead,” The Punch quoted a source as saying.

However, Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, is yet to confirm the report.

Saudi teenager who fled to Canada says she loves her new life as she shares bikini photo

A young woman has received a barrage of abuse after she showed before and after pictures as she celebrates her new life in Canada following her escape from Saudi Arabia.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun posed in a bikini and compared it to an old image of herself in a niqab.

She said it was ‘the biggest change in my life.. from being forced to wear black sheets and being controlled by men to being a free woman’.

Critics in Saudi Arabia were quick to hit out at her, saying that she was making herself ‘naked’.

But, she has also received a large amount of support with people saying she was incredibly brave and that she looked amazing.

Qunun fled the kingdom in January last year and barricaded herself in her hotel, saying she was escaping abuse from her family.

For Saudi women, running away can be a matter of life and death, and they are almost always doing so to escape male relatives.

Following the recent pictures, one follower told her: ‘I really feel sad for people like you, Saudi woman are living in happiness, they are living a normal live they drive, go malls and now they travel alone, plus our prophet Muhammad said that women and men are equal.’

Another said: ‘I was checking her previous posts and got to know that she literally got all this fame because she threw hijab away and started clothing like in the second picture.’

Qunun escaped her family while they were visiting Kuwait then flew to Bangkok. She was denied entry by immigration police and her passport was seized.

She then took her case to social media, sparking the hashtag #SaveRahaf, and posted video of herself using a table to block the door to her hotel room.

She renounced Islam and declared herself an atheist, saying: ‘Physical, emotional and verbal abuse and being imprisoned inside the house for months.

‘They threaten to kill me and prevent me from continuing my education. They won’t let me drive or travel. I am oppressed.

‘I love life and work and I am very ambitious but my family is preventing me from living.’

As a result of her campaign she was given UN protection and she chose to fly to Canada after being granted asylum there.

Rahaf thanked her followers for their ongoing support, writing: ‘I would like to thank you people for supporting me and saving my life.

‘Truly I have never dreamed of this love and support. You are the spark that would motivate me to be a better person.’

Scientists name Robert Pattinson the most beautiful man in the world.

Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson has been crowned the world's sexiest man by scientists.

The 33-year-old Twilight star beat out fellow hunks Brad Pitt and David Beckham in a study that rated the allure of top celebs based on a measure of their "physical perfection".

Pattinson, who takes over as Batman in a new blockbuster next year, was found to be 92.15 per cent accurate to the Greek Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi.

The ratio marks someone's physical attractiveness by taking into account measurements of their lips, chin, eyes, and other facial features.

Ten people on quarantine cruise ship test positive for coronavirus

Around 3,700 people are facing at least two weeks locked away on a cruise liner anchored off Japan after health officials confirmed on Wednesday that 10 people on the ship had tested positive for coronavirus and more cases were possible.

While the infected patients were transferred by Japan’s coast guard to hospitals on the mainland, the remainder of the passengers and crew on board the Carnival Corp ship were placed in quarantine.

Japan’s Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said: ‘I want to take sufficient care of the health of passengers and crew and make every effort to prevent the spread of the virus.’

The decision means that passengers on Carnival’s Diamond Princess, who had embarked for a planned eight-day round trip that was due begin on Tuesday, will instead spend at least 14 days off Yokohama port near Tokyo. Passengers on the ship took to social media to detail their predicament, posting photos of officials in masks and gowns conducting health checks, room service meals, empty corridors, and a barren deck.

British passenger David Abel said all passengers were confined to their cabins on Wednesday morning, with staff delivering food room-by-room.

He said: ‘The challenging situation for me is that I’m an insulin dependent diabetic. We don’t have a choice in what we can eat, the announcement recently was that they’re starting on the bottom deck and working their way up – I’m on the ninth deck.’

‘This is not a good situation for me as a diabetic and I’m certain that there are many, many more diabetics on the ship.’

Another passenger, using the handle @daxa_tw, tweeted that he was ‘hearing from many sides that people are troubled and uneasy.’

The cruise ship was caught up in the global coronavirus epimedic after an 80-year-old Hong Kong man who sailed on the vessel last month tested positive for the virus. The man disembarked in Kagoshima in Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on January 22, where he joined a bus tour, local media reported.

The trial of three alleged Internet fraudsters who scammed some white men by presenting themselves as President Muhammadu Buhari, resumed on Tuesday before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The defendants – Uche Julius, alias Musa Mohammed; Kenneth Ezeomu, alias Abdul Karim; and Agu George, alias Dr Lina Norman were arraigned in November 2018 on 16 counts bordering on forgery and cybercrime.

In the charges, the police alleged that Julius and some persons still at large on August 8, 2018 sent forged electronic messages to one Engr Gmemnzes, “purporting same to have been sent by Her Excellency, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the First Lady and wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari.”


According to the police, the accused titled the messages, ‘Attention: Geraldo Francisco Menezes,’ wherein he demanded immediate payment of $20.5m.

At the resumed trial on Tuesday, a police detective, Musa Naneri, narrated to the court how Julius was lured to a pub, where he was arrested.

Naneri said after their investigation pointed towards Julius, they contacted him and arranged to meet with him at a pub “because he has love for Gulder.”

Chinese doctor who blew the whistle on coronavirus is now infected

A Chinese doctor who was targeted by Beijing authorities after sounding the alarm about the new coronavirus during its early days has now being hospitalized with the deadly illness, according to a new report.

On Dec. 30, Dr. Li Wenliang, 34, posted on the WeChat app a chilling warning among his medical-school alumni that seven people from a market in the Chinese city of Wuhan were quarantined in his hospital with a SARS-like illness, according to CNN.

Evoking memories of the SARS epidemic that claimed hundreds of Chinese lives amid a government coverup in 2003, Li told CNN, “I only wanted to remind my university classmates to be careful.”


But within hours of posting what he’d intended to be a private alert, screenshots of his messages had gone viral.

“When I saw them circulating online, I realized that it was out of my control and I would probably be punished,” Li said from his Intensive Care Unit bed after he was diagnosed on Saturday.

On the day that Li messaged his friends, Wuhan health officials informed medical facilities in the epicenter city that several patients from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market had contracted an “unknown pneumonia.”

“Any organizations or individuals are not allowed to release treatment information to the public without authorization,” the city’s Health Commission warned.

The next day, Wuhan authorities publicly announced the outbreak and informed the World Health Organization.

The late Mafe was said to have celebrated his birthday in Emuren, his home town, and Sagamu on Tuesday night before he slumped and died.

Yinka Mafe who was born on the 4th of February, 1974, is a Nigerian lawyer; he was elected the Councillor of Ward three in Sagamu Local Government Legislative Council in December 1998, a term which ended in 2002. He was 46.

Madonna sued for starting her own show late

Madonna should've been on time for her recent concerts in NYC, because her tardiness screwed over a bunch of fans -- financially and otherwise, according to a new lawsuit.

The pop icon is being sued by a couple guys named Andrew Panos and Antonio Velotta, who claim they were forced to wait 2 to 3 hours for Madonna to take the stage on Sept. 21 and Oct. 1 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

According to the docs, obtained by TMZ, the start time was supposed to be 8:30 PM for the Madame X tour stops, but things didn't actually get started until 11:30 PM on the September date, and 10:40pm in October.


Andrew and Antonio say they were left high and dry on more levels than one. They claim the value of their tickets was greatly diminished, and more importantly ... they say they were left stranded at around 1 AM because they'd missed their scheduled trains or other rides home.

The guys claim the unannounced delay -- which they insist Madonna admitted was her fault -- ruined their plans for work and school the next day. They say they weren't able to arrange alternative rides since their phones were confiscated during the show.

Adding insult to injury, they claim Live Nation -- the company that put on the event -- wouldn't issue refunds to them after the fact. They also allege that the rest of Madonna's September and October shows followed the same pattern of tardiness.

And so now, the boys want compensation.

SON destroys N480m substandard mobile phone accessories

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) says it has destroyed substandard mobile phone accessories worth N480 million.

Its Director-General, Osita Aboloma, made this known at the destruction of the accessories in Epe, Lagos, on Tuesday.

Aboloma, represented by Mr Obiora Manafa, Director, Inspectorate, Compliance and Directorate of SON, said that the organisation was on top of its game to ensure that substandard goods did not find their ways into the Nigerian markets.


He said that the mobile phone accessories were seized by SON for not meeting up with the required standards.

Aboloma said the move was to serve as deterrent to unscrupulous importers who indulged in illicit trade to short-change unsuspecting consumers of their hard-earned money spent purchasing these goods.

The SON director-general stressed that the safety of lives and property of Nigerians was of great importance to the organisation.

Kaduna bombing suspect told us his name was Mohammed, not Samuel, CAN speaks

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, Rev. John Hayab, says the bombing suspect arrested while attempting to blow up a Winners’ Chapel Parish in Kaduna State on Sunday identified himself as Mohammed Sani when he was apprehended by the church.

Hayab claimed after the church handed him over to the police, the suspect’s name suddenly changed to Samuel Nathaniel.

He, therefore, said there was a need for the matter to be thoroughly investigated.

The CAN chairman said this during an interview with The Punch.


The cleric said, “The church was in session when the young man came in, dropped his bag and exited as if he was going to the toilet, but didn’t come back in time. Some church members became suspicious. The church had put security measures in place such that they monitor everything going on in the church and they even have CCTV cameras.

“They discovered that what was in the bag looked like explosives, so they called the police. Let me state clearly that it was not the police that arrested him. It was the church that arrested him and then handed him over to the police.

“The police came to pick him up at the church. At the time he was interrogated at the church, he told the church that  his name was Mohammed Sani, but when he was handed over to the police, the police told everyone that his name was Samuel Nathaniel.”

Hayab said the mix-up in the name of the suspect had further given credence to the claims by the United States that Nigeria remained a terrorist-prone country because of a lack of database.

He said the religion which the suspect practises should not be the focus of public discussions but the act of terrorism.

The cleric said the police had failed to effectively investigate and profile suspects, adding that a few weeks ago, the  force also arrested a hoodlum and erroneously paraded him as a pastor.

Mum infected with coronavirus delivers healthy baby girl while in quarantine (photos)

A coronavirus patient quarantined in a China hospital has given birth to a baby girl who has gone on to test negative for the deadly strain.

Photos show midwives in protective hazmat overalls and masks as they deliver the baby girl before she was isolated from her mum for observation.

The mother is said to be in a stable condition at the hospital in Harbin, located in China’s most northeasterly province of Heilongjiang, reports yahoo! news.

Hospitals across China have been pushed to their limits, with videos emerging of staff breaking down after relentless shifts in a desperate bid to keep the virus at bay.


Images of a 22-year-old nurse’s badly-cut hands shared by Chinese state owned, English-language outlet China Daily, are believed to have been caused by constantly changing gloves and using disinfectant.

This latest birth comes after a mum-of-two, named only as Ms Gong, also welcomed a healthy boy on February 1 while in quarantine at Wuhan Union Hospital, having been transferred there on January 31 from Heilongjiang.

The baby's dad has tested positive for the virus, while his mum is also suspected to be infected.
