Record-breaking US astronaut set to return to Earth

Koch called three-time flyer Whitson "a heroine of mine" and a "mentor" in the space programme after she surpassed the 59-year-old's record.

She also spoke of her desire to "inspire the next generation of explorers."

Koch's return comes after an advert produced by the skincare brand Olay ran during an intermission in the American football Super Bowl with a call to "make space for women."

The advert featured NASA astronaut Nicole Stott and saw the company promise to donate up to $500,000 to the nonprofit Women Who Code, which works with young women seeking careers in tech and scientific fields.


This year's Super Bowl was watched by over 100 million people while advert space costs more than $5 million for a 30-second commercial.

The first woman in space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova whose spaceflight in 1963 is still the only solo mission carried out by a woman.

But the cosmonauts Russia has sent to the ISS since expeditions began in 2000 have all been men with the exception of Yelena Serova's launch in 2014.

Both Tereshkova and Serova are now lawmakers in the Russian parliament, where they represent the ruling United Russia party.

Unlike Koch, whose stay aboard the ISS was extended, Parmitano and Skvortsov are rounding off regular six-month missions.

Parmitano handed over command of the ISS to Roscosmos' Oleg Skripochka on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old Italian posted regular shots of the Earth while aboard, highlighting the plight of the Amazon rainforest and poetically describing the Alps as "like a spinal column, never bending to time."

Four male cosmonauts have spent a year or longer in space as part of a single mission with Valery Polyakov's 437 days the overall record.

Scott Kelly holds the record for a NASA astronaut, posting 340 days at the ISS before he returned home in 2016.

Prince Charles sparks fury over appointing American Katy Perry as an ambassador for a British charity for Asia

Prince Charles is embroiled in a row - over Katy Perry. Charles unveiled the American pop sensation, 34, as an envoy of the British Asian Trust, of which he is royal patron, at an event in London .

The prince said Katy has a “long-standing commitment to charitable causes around the world”.

But the move sparked anger from some who questioned the Californian’s credentials for the role.

Perry, 35, who married former husband Russell Brand in India, said that it has a very special meaning to her when she admitted that the country "has long held a special place" in her heart.

She continued: "On my last visit, I was able to meet with the Prince of Wales and the other leaders in Mumbai."


TV presenter Anila Chowdhry added it was "important to have diversity to reach different communities."

Musician Nitin Sawhney also insisted that inclusively among Asians was important.

Perry is assisting the fight to stop child trafficking.

British Asian Trust said: “We are delighted to have Katy raising awareness.”

Suspected Fulani herdsmen kill three policemen in Delta

Suspected Fulani herdsmen have reportedly hacked three policemen to death along the Ugbolu -Illah Road, in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday at the police checkpoint along the road.

A bricklayer, who did not want to be identified, said the three policemen were trying to stop a motorcycle rider carrying two men, who refused to stop.

He said, “One of the policemen fired at them. The motorcycle rider stopped and the three men moved towards the policemen.

“They shot two policemen and one of them pulled out a dagger and stabbed the third policeman to death. We rushed the three policemen to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba where they were confirmed dead.”


The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, said, “Our men were attacked, which led to death of one after saving the lives of a Sienna driver along with two others.

“The case is under investigation.”

Ariana Grande has been slammed for refusing to take a photo with a fan at the Grammy Awards.

The popular singer was up for five awards, which included Album of the Year for Thank U, Next, and it was the first time the 26-year-old earned a nomination in one of the Big Four categories.

However, in an unpredictable series of events, Ariana lost out on four of the gongs to newcomer Billie Eilish, who scooped more awards than anyone else on the night.

And it appears that losing out on the big wins had a rather negative effect on the 7 Rings singer, as she refused to take any pictures with fans once the ceremony was over.


 According to The Sun, one particular seat-filler felt the wrath of the talented songstress when he approached her for a quick snap.

Terry George - who looks after celebrities' seats when they step away from the ceremony - claimed that Ariana acted like "a bit of diva" after shutting down his request for a photo.

After bagging a candid selfie with the ever-popular Billie following her incredible wins, Terry was rather taken aback with Ariana's response when he asked for one with her.


 Speaking to Insider, he explained what happened when he approached the former Nickelodeon star at the end of the night.

"She said, 'Not right now, I'm not in the mood.' And then obviously I realised thinking back in hindsight that she didn't win anything, so she was pretty upset about it," he recalled.
 After hearing about Terry's dilemma, die-hard fans of Ariana rushed to Twitter to defend the talented star.

"What do you expect? She's just lost out on the biggest awards of her entire life. Why would she agree to get into a picture with some random dude?" wrote one unimpressed fan.

"So what? She's entitled to say no. Leave her alone oh my god!" another fumed.

Subscribers may be restricted to three phone lines

An individual may no longer be able to own more than three phone lines going by a directive handed down to the Nigerian Communications Commission by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isah Pantami.

The directive was based on security considerations.

Pantami directed the NCC to revise the policy on SIM card registration and usage, according to a statement issued by his Technical Assistant on Information Technology, Dr Femi Adeluyi, in Abuja on Wednesday.


The revised policy would ensure that, henceforth, the National Identity Number would become a compulsory requirement for registration of new SIM cards in the country.

The new policy would also put a cap on the number of mobile phone lines or SIM cards that could be obtained and registered by an individual.

Currently, many Nigerians have multiple mobile phone lines as they could buy as many as possible.

Pantami, in the directive issued to the NCC, suggested that an individual should not have more than three mobile phone lines or SIM cards.

While fresh registration of SIM card is to be accompanied with a subscriber’s NIN, all already registered SIM cards are to be updated with the identity number before December 1, 2020.

Similarly, foreigners are to use their passport and or visa numbers to register SIM cards.

With so many kids – North, 6, Saint, 4, Chicago, and 8-month-old Psalm – it makes sense that Kim would be more of a drill sergeant than a “Cool Mom” when it comes to how she runs her household. “The whole day is chaotic, but I’m very micromanaging. Kylie Jenner begs daughter Stormi to call her 'mummy' but she refuses

Kylie Jenner was feeling blue when her two-year-old daughter Stormi refused to call her "mummy" in a super cute video.

Taking to her Instagram stories, the makeup mogul, 22, filmed her little girl showing off her cheeky side as she ran around her mum's feet saying "Hi Kylie!"

Kylie tried her best to correct Stormi, saying sweetly: "No, that's not my name. My name is mummy."

But Stormi wasn't playing along and kept saying "Kylie" over and over as she ran around the room with a smile on her face.


Kylie was clearly upset and said "no!" every time Stormi said her name.

In the clip Stormi looked adorable in a brown top and blue jeans as she smiled up to the camera.

Only Kylie's bottom half could be seen in the video and she appeared to be wearing a dressing gown and slippers.

All was forgiven when Kylie posted her next video, which saw her cuddling Stormi as they posed together.

Shocking! Son stabs parents to death at home in Lagos

A man, Micheal Okhide, has absconded after allegedly stabbing his father, Clement, and mother, Toyin, to death in their house located on No 6, Akeem Gbadamosi Street, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that Michael and his parents were at home when an issue happened which led him to perpetrate the crime.

Afterwards, it was learnt that the 23-year-old also allegedly attacked his sister, Mercy, an NYSC serving corp member, who just returned home around 5.30pm, from her primary place of assignment.

Michael’s sister, Mercy, said when she got home, she saw bloodstains in the house, adding that her brother allegedly attacked her but she escaped with injuries.


She said, “When I got home around 5.30pm, I met the entrance door open and saw blood on the net.

The door to the kitchen was also open but when I entered into the kitchen, I saw that there was bloodstain everywhere and I became scared.

“As I was leaving the kitchen, I heard my mummy screaming my name that I should run, and immediately, I saw Michael came where I was and I saw bloodstains on him.

“He told me to come inside and I refused, so, both of us started struggling and he stabbed me in my stomach and my hands but I was lucky that the cut was not deep. He wanted to prevent me from escaping but I was lucky to escape and he ran back inside and later I heard that he ran away and locked the gate with a padlock.”

A resident in the area, who identified himself has Salau, said Michael absconded after perpetrating the crime, alleging that he was a drug addict that had been rusticated from three universities.

“I know that boy that killed his parents; he stabbed the mother and the father to death and also stabbed his sister who just got back from work where she is serving but she was able to run out of the house and survived. The police from the Ejigbo Police Division visited the scene of the crime yesterday to evacuate the corpses and also came today for further investigation.

“Nobody was around when he stabbed his parents to death in their apartment. That boy has been a torn in their flesh and was a drug addict that had been rusticated from three private universities. He ran away after perpetrating the crime.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said a manhunt has been launched for the arrest of Michael, adding that the corpses were evacuated to the Isolo General Hospital.

Overhead tank kills two pupils in Anambra

An overhead tank on Wednesday crushed two schoolchildren to death in Anambra State. Two other pupils, it was gathered, sustained injuries.

It was gathered that the tank fell inside their classroom at the Royal Kings Foundation Nursery and Primary Schools, Nkpor-Agu in the  Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The source said,”The tank of about 800 gallon-capacity filled with water  fell from its stand from a house adjacent to the school on the roof of the pre-nursery class and into the classroom.

“The victims, three boys and a girl were immediately rushed to the hospital, where two of them were confirmed dead.”


The police spokesperson for the state,  Haruna Mohammed, said the Commissioner of Police, John Abang, had ordered  a discreet investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.

He added, “Two of the children – Wisdom Ezewudo (3)  and a female pupil of about two years, whose identity has yet to be ascertained were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

“Two others namely, Chimelumeze Obelenwa (one-year and seven months) and Kosisochukwu Anthony (one year and ten months) are responding to treatment.”

Spartacus actor Kirk Douglas dies aged 103

Oscar-winning actor Kirk Douglas has died aged 103. The stage and screen actor was well-known for a range of roles, including the 1960 classic Spartacus, in which he played the titular character.

His son, Michael Douglas said in a statement:

"To the world he was a legend... but to me and my brothers ... he was simply Dad.

Kirk's life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet."

Bayelsa council chief appoints 118-year-old woman as special adviser (photos)

The vice-chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area of Bayelsa State, Brian Wotari, has appointed an 118-year-old woman, Omonigbalebo Dani Orogono, as his “special adviser on elder matters.”

Orogono’s appointment was contained in a letter dated February 4, 2020, and signed by Bedford Ineye, one of the vice-chairman’s aides.

“It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been appointed as Special Adviser on Elder Matters to the Vice-Chairman, Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA,” the letter read.


“Your appointment is with immediate effect. Congratulations and accept the warmest regards from the Vice-Chairman.”

Just over a week since the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his wife Vanessa continues to remember the bond they shared and how caring of a father and family man he was.

Vanessa took to her Instagram with a pair of heartfelt posts honoring the late Lakers legend on Wednesday (Feb. 5). Bryant also lost her 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in the devastating helicopter crash that left nine dead in total.

The first featured a recent photo of a smiling Kobe, who she called her "best friend" and the "best daddy" to their four girls. "#mybestfriend #theBestdaddy Miss you so much. #handsome #sweet #funny #silly #lovinghusband. Miss you saying, 'Bonjourno principessa/reina,'" she reflected.

The other is Kobe joking around in a segment for Extra. The five-time NBA champion is seen recalling his first job of mowing lawns and rehashing his childhood fears of bees and stepping in dog poop. Girl, 13, 'pregnant with 10-year-old boyfriend's baby' now social media influencer

The pregnant teenage Russian girl who says the father of her unborn child is a 10-year-old boy has become an online "influencer" and is looking for sponsors after her social media following rocketed following news of her pregnancy.

The schoolgirl mum-to-be, who lives in Siberian town Zheleznogorsk, attends seventh grade while the 10-year-old who is reportedly the boyfriend and father of her child is still in fourth, according to reports.

She was only 13 when she fell pregnant but the girl, who was initially identified as Daria "Dasha" Rubchinskaya but later as Daria "Dasha" Sudnishnikova, has reportedly recently turned 14.


After the story of her pregnancy made headlines around the world, Daria has been using her new-found fame to build up a following on social networks.

As well as sharing snaps and video clips, Daria also includes the hashtag 'Pregnant at 13' on her posts.

Local media said the schoolgirl is trying to monetise her social media accounts to become an online 'influencer' and is willing to work with famous brands and sponsors.

Daria's mother Elena reportedly has terminal cancer, but says she is determined to overcome it in order to be there for her pregnant daughter.

She said: "Initially, we thought she had food poisoning, but slowly we started to realise that whatever was happening had nothing to do with her belly. We then bought a pregnancy test and it showed up positive."

Elena said that she never considered making her teen daughter have an abortion despite her own circumstances, adding that she would be concerned that she would not be able to have children in later life.

Elena also added that, despite her terminal-stage cancer, she plans to stay around as long as possible in order to take care of the baby in the future, adding: "Now I have a reason to live."

Coronavirus vaccine could be tested on animals by next week after breakthrough

A potential vaccine against the killer coronavirus could be tested on animals as soon as next week in a breakthrough in the global fight against the outbreak.

Hundreds of experts are set to meet in Geneva next week to set research and development priorities for coronavirus drugs, diagnostics and vaccines, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

The scientist leading the UK's research into a jab has meanwhile announced a significant breakthrough as experts race against time to develop a vaccine.

Professor Robin Shattock, head of mucosal infection and immunity at Imperial College London, has told Sky News his team could be ready to test the vaccine on animals next week.

If enough funding is secured, the vaccine could be tested on humans by summer, he added.

Husband slits his pregnant wife's throat during s.e.x for getting pregnant for the third child

A jealous husband confessed to using a razor blade to slash his pregnant wife's throat while they were in the middle of having s.e.x, police in Brazil said.

Marcelo Araújo, 21, claimed under questioning that he killed his wife, 22-year-old Francine dos Santos, after they rowed about her becoming pregnant for the third time.

The couple already had two children, a daughter, four, and a son, two. 

He reportedly admitted that he didn't want any more children, resented sharing his wife with them and hated the financial burden it placed on him as a young dad.


The suspect was found seriously injured after the crime, with cuts to his neck and wrists, in the family home in Várzea Paulista, a municipality in the State of São Paulo.

Cops said he had apparently tried to take his own life.

Investigators told Brazilian news outlet G1 that the admission came following more than six weeks of interrogation during which the accused gave several versions of what happened.

According to detectives, the suspect claimed that on December 22 last year, the couple started off discussing plans for their family Christmas dinner but matters escalated and it turned into a blazing argument about the pregnancy.

Shortly after the disagreement the pair appeared to resolve their differences and headed for the bedroom to make love.

But during the intimate session the suspect apparently stabbed his wife, a make-up artist, with a knife several times before slashing her throat with a blade.

Tanzanian preacher granted bail over deaths in stampede

Tanzania’s Boniface Mwamposa has been released on bail after he was arrested over a stampede that killed 20 people on Sunday during an outdoor religious service he was leading in the northern town of Moshi.

Mr Mwamposa — who refers to himself as “the apostle” — was arrested together with seven other suspects though the charges against him were not revealed.

He was arrested in the coastal town of Dar es Salaam, about 540km (335 miles) away from Moshi, where he had gone to preach in another branch of his church.

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Anna Mghwira confirmed to the BBC that the preacher had been released on bail.


She said police have gathered preliminary information and investigation is ongoing.

Twenty people — including five children — lost their lives following a rush to be anointed with “blessed oil”.

The preacher had told hundreds of people gathered at the service to pass through an area where the oil had been poured over the floor.

The crowd rushed forward to try to step in the oil in the hope of being cured of sickness.

Kenyan female rapper Razz Msupa dies after a short illness

 Upcoming female Kenyan rapper Razz Msupa is dead. The rapper passed on after what is termed as a short illness.

Confirming the shocking news, Kennedy Ombima, popularly known as King Kaka took to social media to express his shock considering he had seen her the previous night and even prayed for her.

"I am now ready for 2021 too much going on this year, just saw you jana night and prayed, it’s sad that you are gone. Razzmsupa Tuko Ligi Soo! Safiri Salama," he wrote.

His wife, Nana Owiti, also expressed how broken she was after learning that the female rapper was no more.


“We don’t know what to tell Makayla. Why did you give up that fast? Why Razz? @thekingkaka and @darkskinmagero and I came to see you last night. You lay on that bed peacefully as you tried to fight. Didn’t know it is the last time we will see you breathing. We are beyond sad.”

PR practitioner Magero, who accompanied King Kaka and Nana during the last trip to see Razz, also mourned her saying:



“Last night at a time like this @nanaowiti, @thekingkaka and I came to see you in hospital, we saw you struggle to breathe despite you being on on the oxygen mask, this broke our hearts and as we left the hospital @thekingkaka told us "itabidi tukuwe wastrong" little did we know that, that would be the last time we'd see you alive on earth. RIP Dayo,” she wrote on Instagram

She is known for songs such as ‘Spit Barz’ and was among the female rappers to watch out for in 2020.
