Trump celebrates impeachment acquittal and blasts rivals

US President Donald Trump has taken a victory lap one day after his impeachment acquittal, in a tirade against his political enemies.

"I've done things wrong in my life, I will admit... but this is what the end result is," he said as he held up a newspaper headlined "Trump acquitted".

"We went through hell, unfairly. We did nothing wrong," he said at the White House. "It was evil, it was corrupt."

He earlier criticised impeachment foes who invoked their religious faith.

"Now we have that gorgeous word. I never thought it would sound so good," Mr Trump said from the East Room, which was crammed with supporters and cabinet officials.

"It's called 'total acquittal'."

Mr Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, but was acquitted on Wednesday after a two-week trial in the Republican-controlled Senate, which did not include any witnesses.

Man hanged himself after murdering partner then r.a.p.i.n.g and killing her teenage daughter

A Scottish manual worker killed his partner before r.a.p.i.n.g and killing her teenage daughter in a 'barbaric' double murder-suicide, an inquest in Northern Ireland has heard.

The bodies of the mother and daughter were discovered in an apartment in Newry on March 7, 2019, along with Russell Steele by police after they had all been reported missing.

Coroner Joe McCrisken found Giselle Marimon-Herrera, 37, died from asphyxiation and suffocation and 15-year-old Allison Marimon-Herrera died due to manual strangulation and suffocation.

Their chihuahua dog was also found dead. Mr McCrisken in County Armagh described the deaths of the mother and daughter as "one of the most difficult" inquests he has ever presided over.

He said he could not be certain that Ms Marimon-Herrera had been sexually assaulted, but that there is evidence her daughter had been raped.

Steele was found to have died by hanging, and he had intended to die, the inquest heard. Torn women's underwear was found in his pocket.

Steele's family had been kept informed of the proceedings but chose not to attend, the hearing was told.

At the opening of proceedings on Thursday morning, Mr McCrisken said he was holding separate inquests into the deaths of Ms Marimon-Herrera and her daughter, and Steele.

He heard evidence about events in the run up to the deaths.

A statement from Ms Marimon-Herrera's sister Paola was read to the inquest.

She described how her sister had arrived in Northern Ireland in 2016 after separating from her Portuguese husband, and was followed by her daughter in 2017.

She also told the inquest that her sister had felt Steele was "controlling" and she had wanted to end the relationship.

PSNI Investigating Officer Victoria Holmes said text messages exchanged between Steele and Ms Marimon-Herrera revealed a recent argument which included an attempt by her to end the relationship.

Statements from two Polish men, Szymon Kosecki and Pawel Bronk, who had been work colleagues of Steele, were read to court.

They are believed to be the last to have seen Ms Marimon-Herrera and her daughter alive after meeting up with the mother and Steele for a night out on Saturday March 2 at Brass Monkeys in Newry.

They returned to the Glin Ree Court apartment where they saw Miss Marimon-Herrera with her pet dog.
They stayed for around an hour for drinks, leaving at around 3am.

Ward Devlin, an ex-partner of Ms Marimon-Herrera, gave evidence to the inquest about how he raised the alarm after she failed to respond to messages for several days.

Neighbour Gerard Doran is believed to be the last person to have seen Steele alive.

The family said they were devastated by the deaths, adding in a statement: "We are a very private family who have been catapulted into the public domain as a result of this murder."

They thanked the public and others who organised donations, which the family used to travel from France and Colombia to Northern Ireland, where they were able to see where the victims had lived and to meet pupils and teachers at Allison's school.

The fund also assisted in paying for the cremation in Belfast and for family members to travel to Portugal, where their ashes have been laid to rest.

The statement concluded: "The family appeal to anyone who is at risk of domestic violence to seek help."

Mel B's ex Stephen Belafonte seeking full custody of their daughter in brutal legal war

Mel B's ex-husband Stephen Belafonte is now seeking full custody of their daughter Madison as their brutal legal battle turns uglier.

The 'Scary Spice' and Stephen currently have joint custody of the eight-year-old.

However in court documents filed this week, Stephen has asked for full legal and physical custody of the child.

And reports by TMZ allege that Stephen claims Mel has "all but abandoned" her youngest child since moving to the UK after the couple split.

Stephen, 44, claims he's been the sole caregiver of Madison for the vast majority of 2018 and much of last year.

The producer says he is still willing to let Mel see her daughter, however he wants the court to rule that visitation can only happen in Los Angeles and under supervision.

Mel is also a mum to Phoenix, 20, whom she had with Jimmy Gulzar, and 12-year-old Angel whom she had with Eddie Murphy.

The latest turn of events in the former couple's custody battle comes after Mel was banned from taking Madison home to the UK for Christmas.

The Spice Girl lost a court dispute and was ordered to leave the eight-year-old with her dad in LA rather than take her to Leeds to join her sisters and grandma and aunt for the festive period.

Claims emerged in the LA downtown court that Madison was “traumatised” in her mother's company and with the travelling.

A psychiatrist report was produced, citing that Madison should not jet to the UK after past issues - all of which Mel denies.

Mel was “disappointed” her lawyer said, but a business associate added: “Mel is livid and sick and tired of her ex wrecking her life.”

Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas refused to allow Mel to take her daughter back after allegations emerged she suffered the last time she was in the UK.

FG slashes visa fees for U.S. citizens

The Federal Government has slashed its  visa application charges for citizens of the United States from $180 to $160.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the old amount comprised $160 as visa fee and $20 as “processing and expedient fees”.

According to the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Muhammad Babandede, the reduction followed a review of the U.S.’ visa reciprocity policy for Nigeria.

abandede stated this in a Feb. 5 memo marked NIS/HQ/CGI/806/7 and addressed to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In August, 2019, the U.S. government imposed additional visa fees on Nigerians in retaliation for the “treatment afforded to U.S. citizens” by the Nigerian government.

The policy required successful applicants for nonimmigrant U.S. visas in the B, F, H1B, I, L, and R categories to pay between $80 and $303 as reciprocity fees.

This is in addition to the normal visa application fees of between $160 and $190.

“The total cost for a U.S. citizen to obtain a visa to Nigeria is currently higher than the total cost for a Nigerian to obtain a comparable visa to the United States.

“The new reciprocity fee for Nigerian citizens is meant to eliminate that cost difference,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement on its website then.

In his letter, the NIS urged all Nigerian missions in the U.S. to immediately implement the new visa charges payable by US citizens, and “discontinue charging processing or expedient fees”.

“Our Missions are to issue up to two years multiple entry visa to frequent short visit travelers on request in line with reciprocity,” he said.

I’ll not tolerate any more protests in Imo – Uzodinma

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has warned that his administration will deal with individuals and groups of persons sponsoring inciting protests in the state.

He said he would no longer tolerate any more protests designed to destabilize government activities and tamper with the peace of the state.

Uzodinma’s threat followed series of protests that greeted the removal of Emeka Ihedioha as the governor of the state by the Supreme Court.

Speaking when the National Union of Road Transport Workers and Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) held solidarity rally for him at the government house in Owerri, the governor said that he had tolerated enough destabilization from some disgruntled elements in the state.

He warned that he would no longer fold his arms and watch any group under any guise trample upon the peace of the state.

He said: “My government will do all within the ambits of the law to maintain peace and order; those who are engaging in these incessant protests must stop forthwith. I took an oath to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of the citizens, I will not fail to deal with any group causing breach of the peace in the state.”

The governor reassured Imo citizens that his administration was for peace and service, ready to provide equal opportunities for the overall development of the state and her citizens regardless of cadre and status as the government would not condone any act of marginalization or unruly attitude.

He also assured the persons living with disabilities that they would not be marginalized against.

“Whatever anybody can do I’m sure you can do it, you’ll be given equal opportunities; so I implore you to go on and be happy because this is your government”, the governor said.

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, stated this when he appeared before the Senate Committee on health.

He briefed the Senate panel on the level of his ministry’s preparedness to manage the Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

He said the fund would come directly from the service-wide vote.

Enahire said the ministry, on Thursday, submitted a memo proposing for the release of the sum of N620m to take proactive measures to contain the virus.

Enahire said already,  N71m was released to the port health services for its operations.

He said the national intervention on containing the Lassa fever outbreak enjoyed timely release of N313m intervention fund from the Federal Government to manage the outbreak.

Nicki Minaj accuses Meek Mill of ‘beating’ her sister as he calls her brother a ‘rapist’

Nicki Minaj and her ex-boyfriend Meek Mill have exchanged a series of very heated tweets last night, in which serious allegations came to light.

The Starships rapper, 37, fired claims of domestic violence against Meek, who is also a rapper.

Nicki claimed her ex “beat” and “spit on” his own sister as the Twitter feud progressed into a vicious exchange.

Meek, 32, fired back as he mentioned her brother’s convicted rape trial in one of his tweets.

Nicki kicked the argument off by saying Meek liked a since-deleted meme on Instagram that poked fun of the way her husband Kenneth Petty dresses.

She then called Meek a clown on her Instagram Stories, before adding: “U do IT for likes. #TwitterFingers beat women, scared of men."

Not stopping there, Nicki took the fight to Twitter, writing: “N***a been tweeting bout my man for a year now.

“Talking bout he went to my page to see him but he was blocked. My n***a, move on. I know ya b***h embarrassed. S*****d yaself in that store when u got pressed tho."

She then dropped a bombshell allegation of Meek's alleged attacks of domestic violence, saying: “You beat your own sister and taped it.

“Spit on her & taped it. Kicked me in front your mother and sent her to the hospital. Sucking drake d**k made u feel tough again. Move on."

However Meek, from Philadelphia, hit back: “The only way you can try to kill my career is to say I beat women.

"Talk about ya brother convicted of rape and you been knew and paid for his lawyer ... ya little brother touched that lil girl too! You know I know. You want me to crash with ya boyfriend and I won’t.”

The pair famously dated from 2015 until 2017.

Meek added: “You sad you willing to crash your man because you losing now and everybody in the industry know you a bad person!

“You been knew your brother was raping that little girl that’s why I got away from you!”

Nicki's brother was last month jailed for 25 years to life after being found guilty of child rape.

And after the rant exploded into a trending topic on Twitter, thousands of followers kept up with the heated exchange between the exes.

Nicki added more fuel to the fire by adding: “Imagine talking about an alleged rape of a child to hurt someone who wasn't involved just so ppl can dislike me.

"You can never stand on your own. You won’t tell ppl the mother is on tape asking me for $20 million to make the charge go away tho. U was around. U know. See u soon.”

And Nicki's fierce allegations against Meek forced him to stand up for himself, tweeting: “For clarification I don’t hit women.

"And I won’t let my interviews be filled with question about her or any situation to do with her when I come out to do press for my new album! No devils tricks.”

Third UK patient 'caught coronavirus in Singapore'

A third UK patient has been diagnosed with coronavirus, medics have said. The person, who has not been identified, contracted the disease overseas, the Department of Health confirmed.

According to The Guardian, the patient was diagnosed in Brighton, and is being taken to a hospital in London.

It comes after two people in York, believed to be a student and his mum, were taken ill with the deadly disease, which has claimed more than 500 lives worldwide.

The student had been staying at Staycity Aparthotel in the city when they were taken ill last Wednesday, January 29.

Professor Chris Whitty said the person, who did not contract the virus in the UK, is currently being transferred to one of the UK's four infectious diseases centres for treatment.

Two other patients are still being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary infectious diseases centre in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In a statement, Prof Whitty said: "A further patient has tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to three.

Father of suspected suicide bomber caught in Winners Chapel speaks

The father of Nathaniel Samuel, the man who was arrested for trying to bomb a Living Faith Church, a.k.a Winners’ Chapel, in Kaduna, has confirmed that his son is a Christian, and not a Muslim as being speculated on social media.

“No! Not even for a single day has he been a Muslim,” Nathaniel’s father, Mr. Samuel Ezekiel, said in his Marabar Demishi village in Kaduna.

The alleged bomber’s true identity has become a controversy in the social media, with some accusing the police of changing his name to deflect anger against Boko Haram or the Muslim community.

Some reports said Samuel had told the Christian leaders who arrested him at the Winners Chapel branch in Kaduna that he was Mohammed Sani, only for the police to parade him as Nathaniel Samuel.

According to Daily Trust, the father along with the Kaduna state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Joseph Hayab, found otherwise.

Nathaniel was born in 1991 and schooled in the state, his father said. His mother is from Nasarawa state even though she no longer lives with them.

Mr. Ezekiel said his son has been a Christian and not a Muslim even for a single day. He denied that his son bears Mohammed Sani.

Ezekiel also said he was shocked when he was told that his son carried a bomb into a church because he wondered what would have happened to the lives of people in the church.

“If he was alone, I don’t care but for the lives that are in the church, I begin to wonder. I shed tears,” he said.

Reverend Hayab Joseph said he knew the father of the suspect for many years, noting that it’s just that he didn’t know that Nathaniel was the son of Mr. Ezekiel until he visited the house.

He said CAN is not concerned about Nathaniel’s name or religion but the act of criminality that he would have committed which should be addressed.

He also expressed disappointment over the failure of the Police to do a thorough check on the suspect’s background, saying that would have saved Nigerians a lot of stress on the identity of the suspect.

Record-breaking US astronaut set to return to Earth

Koch called three-time flyer Whitson "a heroine of mine" and a "mentor" in the space programme after she surpassed the 59-year-old's record.

She also spoke of her desire to "inspire the next generation of explorers."

Koch's return comes after an advert produced by the skincare brand Olay ran during an intermission in the American football Super Bowl with a call to "make space for women."

The advert featured NASA astronaut Nicole Stott and saw the company promise to donate up to $500,000 to the nonprofit Women Who Code, which works with young women seeking careers in tech and scientific fields.

This year's Super Bowl was watched by over 100 million people while advert space costs more than $5 million for a 30-second commercial.

The first woman in space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova whose spaceflight in 1963 is still the only solo mission carried out by a woman.

But the cosmonauts Russia has sent to the ISS since expeditions began in 2000 have all been men with the exception of Yelena Serova's launch in 2014.

Both Tereshkova and Serova are now lawmakers in the Russian parliament, where they represent the ruling United Russia party.

Unlike Koch, whose stay aboard the ISS was extended, Parmitano and Skvortsov are rounding off regular six-month missions.

Parmitano handed over command of the ISS to Roscosmos' Oleg Skripochka on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old Italian posted regular shots of the Earth while aboard, highlighting the plight of the Amazon rainforest and poetically describing the Alps as "like a spinal column, never bending to time."

Four male cosmonauts have spent a year or longer in space as part of a single mission with Valery Polyakov's 437 days the overall record.

Scott Kelly holds the record for a NASA astronaut, posting 340 days at the ISS before he returned home in 2016.

Prince Charles sparks fury over appointing American Katy Perry as an ambassador for a British charity for Asia

Prince Charles is embroiled in a row - over Katy Perry. Charles unveiled the American pop sensation, 34, as an envoy of the British Asian Trust, of which he is royal patron, at an event in London .

The prince said Katy has a “long-standing commitment to charitable causes around the world”.

Saigon Love Story film-maker Ringo Le said: "This is what happens when white people listen to Joaquin Phoenix’s BAFTA speech about dismantling systematic racism."

"They double down and pick Katy Perry to be the face of their Asian Trust."

This Morning star Dr Ranj Singh initially queried the 'unusual' move.

He insisted: "She is a massive pop star with great influence. Her music is fab.

"But she’s not British, nor Asian... it just seems like an unusual choice."

Perry, 35, who married former husband Russell Brand in India, said that it has a very special meaning to her when she admitted that the country "has long held a special place" in her heart.

She continued: "On my last visit, I was able to meet with the Prince of Wales and the other leaders in Mumbai."

TV presenter Anila Chowdhry added it was "important to have diversity to reach different communities."

Musician Nitin Sawhney also insisted that inclusively among Asians was important.

Perry is assisting the fight to stop child trafficking.

British Asian Trust said: “We are delighted to have Katy raising awareness.”
