Photos: Man disrupts ex-girlfriend's wedding for allegedly using his money to organize it

Man to die by hanging for stealing iPhone 6

An Ogun State High Court sitting at Isabo, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, sentenced one Olumide Adekanbi to death by hanging for armed robbery.

It was learnt that Adekanbi had earlier pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery preferred against him.

He was said to have committed the offence at Saraki-Adigbe area of Abeokuta in 2016.

The state principal counsel, Owolabi Akinola, had told the court that the convict committed the offence around 4 a.m. on the said day.

Akinola informed the court that the convict and others at large, made away with one laptop computer, one iPad and an iPhone 6 from his victims during the robbery operation.

It was gathered that the stolen items were later recovered from him where he kept them at a computer village in the ever busy Okelewo area of the metropolis.

A victim, Abowaba Salmon, also told the court that Adekanbi, while trying to escape, hit him with an offensive weapon on the head.

Salmon added that while he was struggling with the robbers, the convict’s mobile phone dropped.

He was reportedly tracked and arrested by the police, using the mobile phone.

Consequent upon this, Justice Rotimi Balogun, in his judgement, said the prosecutor proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the convict truly committed the crime as he never denied robbing the victims.

Justice Balogun found him guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Buhari backs demand for Diaspora voting

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday supported the calls by Nigerians in the Diaspora to vote in future elections.

But he said such a decision should pass through a legislative process.

The President spoke at a meeting with the Nigerian Community in Ethiopia (NICE).

He assured Nigerians at home and abroad of his administration’s resolve to defeat terror groups, like Boko Haram, ISWAP and other groups of criminals across the country.

President Buhari urged Nigerians to support and cooperate with security agencies, who he said were ready to defend and preserve the unity of the country.

The meeting, which was moderated by the Chairman/Chief Executive of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, observed a minute silence in honour of about 30 Nigerians burnt to death by Boko Haram terrorists in Auno, Borno State, on Monday.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the President spoke on Diaspora voting while responding to a question  by the leader of NICE, David Omozuafoh.

“I have said it severally that I am not against it (Diaspora voting). However, you will need to convince the National Assembly to amend the relevant laws to make Diaspora voting a reality,” the President said.

Jussie Smollett indicted in attack that police called a hoax

A grand jury in Chicago revived the criminal case against the actor Jussie Smollett, indicting him Tuesday on charges that he lied to the police in connection with the alleged hate crime attack against him a year ago. The indictment came 11 months after prosecutors dropped similar charges against him.

The new charges were announced by a special prosecutor, Dan K. Webb, who was assigned to the case after a judge ruled that the Cook County state’s attorney, Kim Foxx, had not properly handled it the first time.

In a rebuke to Ms. Foxx’s office, Mr. Webb criticized the decision by her prosecutors to abruptly drop the case, saying in a news release that his review of the record showed that her office had believed it had strong evidence against Mr. Smollett. Mr. Webb said the state’s attorney’s office had not offered any evidence showing that it had gained new information indicating Mr. Smollett’s innocence, nor any documentation that similar cases had been handled the same way.

Mr. Webb said that he had not reached any conclusions about whether prosecutors engaged in wrongdoing and that he was continuing to investigate.

Mr. Smollett, 37, was charged last February with filing a false police report after the Chicago police concluded that he had paid two brothers to stage an attack on him in which they shouted homophobic and racial slurs and yelled, “This is MAGA country,” a reference to President Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan. The police said Mr. Smollett was looking for publicity because he was unhappy with his salary on the television show “Empire,” which dropped him from the cast after his arrest.

The new indictment charges Mr. Smollett with six counts of disorderly conduct related to false statements to Chicago police officers. Five of the counts were related to accounts Mr. Smollett gave police the morning of Jan. 29, 2019, when he said the attack occurred; and one was related to a statement he made on Feb. 14, around when the police started to view Mr. Smollett as a suspect.

Yemi Solade reveals why he is 'hated' in Nollywood

Popular Yoruba actor, Yemi Solade has revealed why some of his colleagues do not like him in the industry and what caused that.

Speaking to City People, the actor opened can of worms about Nollywood.

Below is what the ace actor who recently turned 60 said...

“I can remember when Mama Rainbow met me on the set of “Oju Inu”. She said “Doctor, if I invite you will you work for me? I played the role of Medical Doctor in the movie back then and everything was well structured. I began to point out certain things that I felt were missing such as calling someone Mrs. Tayo in a Corporate environment. Once you use the prefix, the surname has to follow.

“So they began to frown at my ideas, that Baba Ogunde already said it that some English people will come and hijack this theatre work. But despite everything I was focused because I already made up my mind to come and make impact. And don’t forget this is what I was trained to do. It is my job. It’s my life and I was not doing it for money. I was so excited that the Marketers who saw the flicks were interested in my job.

“I began to be their bride at that point. Many major roles were coming to me, and I was enjoying myself. I had clashes with a few of them who were not ready to embrace my style, and I was telling them I wasn’t shifting grounds.

“But I give it to them, they are a bunch of raw talents, that no one can take from them. If you see their crafts, you will fall in love with their skills, but the technical know-how and power of articulation we don’t have,” he added.

Speaking on how he adapted to the existing tradition in the Yoruba movie industry, Solade said; “I have had to adjust a bit. I met a lot of traditional ways they do their thing when I joined.

“There is this particular practice in the Yoruba movie industry, it is called: I do for you, you do for me. It works for some people but not for me because I didn’t run a clique. They will invite stars to location, and end up giving them money just for fuel, and end up running around society men and women for the bigger survival.

“So, I chose to remain the consummate actor that I am. Just be different, to do my craft and collect good fees and live a normal life.”

Solade also revealed that Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka influenced him into studying Theatre and becoming a drama student in his department at the University of Ife.

He said, “If you ask me who trained me, I will just tell you, Wole Soyinka. He was a lecturer in the University of Ife, a Civil Servant that was paid. He did not employ or write any Jamb for me. He only influenced my studying Theatre and becoming a drama student in his department.

“But in the Yoruba arm, you must have an Oga. They have master and apprenticeship schemes. Somebody must train you and you cannot erode that, it has come to stay. Here I was, coming from Wole Soyinka’s line, where things like that were not applicable.

I could give him all the respect that he taught me, but not to the extent of being subservient to him. That was the structure I met, and I was doing my thing differently and I had issues because they saw me like someone that was arrogant and doing something they were not used to. They concluded I was just one guy that just came to have a feel of the industry.

The actor disclosed that he was warned about voodoo in the industry. He said. “Also, the fear of Voodoo but I didn’t see all of that, I was cautioned to be extremely careful, but here I am today. I have contributed in my own little way and I’m still doing that now. And I think, we have more understanding now because those critics thought I was out to destroy the structure.”

APC threatens Ex-Governor Ayo Fayose with EFCC

The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has threatened to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), if former governor Ayodele Fayose fails to give a satisfactory explanation about the N400m earmarked for Akure-Ado-Ekiti road.

The party urged the ex-governor to clarify why it terminated the reconstruction of Ekiti portion of the road and chased away workers of KOPEC Construction Company, who were handling the project without a justifiable reason.

Fayose had last Wednesday lamented the poor state of the road, saying the interstate road linking Ondo State capital Akure and Ekiti State capital Ado-Ekiti has turned to a death trap.

However, the ruling APC expressed surprise that he could be describing the road as being deplorable, alleging that the ex-governor during his first term misappropriated the N400 million earmarked for the project.

Responding, Fayose told the party to refrain from constituting itself into a court of law or an anti-graft agency that would be judging people on the issue of alleged corruption, urging it to petition the EFCC if it had evidence against him.

He said the APC-led government should dissipate its energy on how to deliver the dividends of democracy to the citizenry instead of spreading a campaign of calumny against him.

Addressing reporters in Ado- Ekiti yesterday, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ade Ajayi, said the ruling party as a responsible and patriotic party would earnestly petition the EFCC if the ex-governor failed to give a satisfactory explanation about the money.

He added: “We are not accusing former governor Fayose of embezzlement, but he must explain why he terminated the Ado-Akure road contract. The public want to know whether he terminated that contract for the construction of Afao road, because the Ado-Akure road is very germane to our economy in Ekiti.

“The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Federal Government had shown interest to reconstruct the road. Why was the former governor now lamenting? We were able to decode that he had ulterior motive, which was to dent the image of Governor Kayode Fayemi.

“When we asked him about how he spent the money, he dodged the question and we were baffled, because we expected him to say the truth. All Ekiti and the public knew that Fayose was responsible for the bad state of the road by revoking the contract after the contractor had mobilised to site.

“Why would a person who was responsible for the deplorable state of the road should now be lamenting? We are baffled over this. He should tell us where the money went, rather than lamenting. Our people must be careful with the politics he is playing.”

Ajayi further said: “This Fayose that was lamenting, spent N17 billion on a flyover that is not necessary. It could have been better if such money was spent on roads across the state.

“Governor Fayemi has re-awarded Oye-Ayede-Otun, Ilupeju-Ire-Igbemo-Ijan and Ode-Isinbode-Omuo roads. He should bury his head in shame. Anytime he is in Ekiti, he should ruminate on his past and how he got it wrong.

“We want to warn that APC won’t tolerate any dirty politics from him.”

Kastina headmaster remanded for severally defiling girl

A 35-year-old headmaster at Alhazawa Primary School, Danja, in the Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State, Kabiru Husaini, has been remanded in a correctional centre for the alleged rape of a minor in his school.

Husaini, who resided at Sabon Gari Quarters, Zaria, Kaduna State, allegedly defiled the victim several times, although the victim’s father found out on January 26, 2020.

Husaini will be in the correctional facility till April 14, 2020, when his case comes up for mention before Hajiya Fadile Dikko of a Katsina senior magistrate’s court.

The police alleged that Husaini sexually violated the 10-year-old girl ‘about five times’ inside one of the classrooms in the school.

The victim’s father, Ibrahim Sani, reported the incident on January 27, 2020, at the Danja Police Station, leading to Husaini’s arrest.

According to the police, Sani observed that the victim was walking abnormally on January 26, which prompted him to query her.

The victim reportedly revealed that Husaini “who is the headmaster at Alhazawa Primary School, deceived and lured her into the said school classroom and about five times had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.”

Husaini is facing a charge for the offence of rape in line with Section 254 of the Katsina State Penal Code Law of 2019.

The presiding magistrate directed that he should be remanded.
