3 million people practicing open defecation in Bauchi state

Mr Garba Magaji, the General Manager (GM), Bauchi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), on Friday said 3 million people practice open defecation in the state.

Magaji disclosed this at a one-day sensitisation and partnership meeting organised for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Coordinators and Community radio personnel in Bauchi.

He said statistics have shown that about 3 million people practise open defecation, while out of 10,000 communities, 6,000 of them practise open defecation with 4,000 using toilet facilities.

The GM said that Gov. Bala Mohammed became disturbed with the prevalence of open defecation among the people and directed stakeholders to work out strategies to reduce the prevalence.

“The Governor directed all stakeholders in WASH sector to redouble efforts and work towards meeting the water supply and sanitation needs to eliminate open defecation in the state.

“The statistics on open defecation, accessible water services and sanitation in the state are disturbing,’’ he said.

According to him, we organise the sensitisation and partnership workshop for WASH stakeholders in the communities and media personnel to strengthen the partnership and work towards attaining an open defecation free society.

He explained that open defecation has negative effects in public health, educational attendance and socio-economic development of a state.

Missing British backpacker found dead after she disappeared while out hiking in New Zealand

A missing British backpacker has been found dead after she disappeared while out hiking in New Zealand.

Stephanie Simpson, 32, was last seen by fellow hikers in Mount Aspiring National Park on the South Island on Saturday.

The alarm was raised when Miss Simpson, from Essex, failed to turn up at her landscaping job in the town of Wanaka on Monday, 45 miles from the park.

Police in New Zealand found her body around 1.40pm local time on Friday near an area of the park called Pyke Creek, close to where she was last seen.

It comes after search teams found her backpack and hiking boots earlier in the day, helping to restrict the search area.

It was not immediately clear how she died and her death has been referred to the coroner.

Sergeant Mark Kirkwood said that her family were grieving and had asked for privacy.

Waitress arraigned for ‘cooking noodles with marijuana’ for friend

A twenty-eight-year-old waitress, Dora Edet, appeared on Thursday before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly adding marijuana into noodles she cooked for her friend.

Edet, a resident of No. 4, Mufutau Shobola St., Ifako-Ijaiye in Lagos State, is facing a count charge of breach of the peace.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, the defendant conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by adulterating food with marijuana and giving same to the complainant, Miss Faith Nwakwo.

Unah told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in November 2019 at her residence.

He submitted that the defendant, who was living with Nwankwo, added the substance into noodles she prepared for her, without her consent.

“The defendant was squatting with the complainant in her mini flat.

“The complainant had told the defendant to leave her house after she noticed that the defendant was always smoking weeds in the room.

“The defendant invited an unwanted guest into the room and they smoked together. This was eyesore to the complainant.

“All attempts made by the complainant to prevent the defendant from smoking the weeds in the house proved abortive.

“This made the defendant to carry out the wicked act,” Unah said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A. A. Fashola, granted the defendant N100, 000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Fashola ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The magistrate adjourned the case until March 3 for hearing.

Manchester city may sack me If i don't beat real - Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he could be sacked if he fails to beat Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Guardiola has won five major trophies in three seasons at the Etihad, but a failure to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League has been the big disappointment of his reign.

Guardiola’s side trail Liverpool at the top of the Premier League by a mammoth 22 points this season with their campaign now set to be judged on how they fare in Europe.

“I want to win the Champions League. I dream (of it) and I will enjoy preparing for the games against Madrid,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“If we don’t beat them, OK, come the chairman or the sports director and say, ‘It’s not good enough, we want the Champions League, I’m going to sack you.’

“I don’t know (if this would happen). It has happened many times and could maybe happen.”

Guardiola has a contract at the Etihad until the end of next season.

After four years at Barcelona and three in charge of Bayern Munich, he is expected to fulfil his deal and enter the fifth season at one club for the first time in his managerial career.

But the Catalan coach also hit back at the suggestion that the success or failure of a season should only be measured in trophies.

“We give a bad, bad message for the new generation, for our kids, to just count the winner, the trophies to winning,” added Guardiola.

Sleeping with more than 10 people 'increases your chance of getting cancer'

Having s.e.x with more than 10 partners over a lifetime can increase your chances of getting cancer, according to a shock new study.

And women with a higher number of sexual partners are more likely to report a limiting, long-term condition, experts from the UK, Austria, Turkey, Canada and Italy found.

The researchers analysed data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) involving adults aged 50 and over in England.

Some 5,722 participants reported how many sexual partners they had had and rated their health and any long-term condition on a questionnaire in 2012/13.

Those who had more sexual partners were younger, more likely to smoke, drink frequently, and do more vigorous physical activity each week, the researchers said.

The average age of participants was 64, and almost three-quarters were married.

Some 22% of men and and just under 8% of women reported 10 or more sexual partners.

The researchers found a statistically significant association between the number of lifetime sexual partners and risk of a cancer diagnosis among men and women.

Compared with women who reported 0-1 sexual partners, those who said they had had 10 or more had 91% increased odds of being diagnosed with cancer.

Men who reported 2-4 lifetime sexual partners were 57% more likely to have been diagnosed with cancer than were those who reported 0-1.

And those who reported 10 or more, were 69% more likely to have been diagnosed with the disease.

The study, published in BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health, also found that women who reported five to nine, or more than 10 lifetime sexual partners were 64% more likely to have a limiting chronic condition than those who said they had had 0-1.

The researchers did not find any association in men.

While the study does not establish cause, it mirrors previous findings linking sexually transmitted infections in the development of several cancers and hepatitis.

The small number of cancer diagnoses in the participants meant the researchers were not able to analyse the results broken down by cancer type.

President Putin rules out Russia legalising gay marriage

President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday Russia would not legalize gay marriage as long as he was in the Kremlin.

He made clear he would not allow the traditional notion of mother and father to be subverted by what he called "parent number 1" and "parent number 2".

"As far as 'parent number 1' and 'parent number 2' goes, I've already spoken publicly about this and I'll repeat it again: as long as I'm president this will not happen. There will be dad and mum," Putin said.

During his two decades in power, Putin has closely aligned himself with the Orthodox Church and sought to distance Russia from liberal Western values, including attitudes toward homosexuality and gender fluidity.

He made the comments as he met a state commission to discuss changes to Russia's constitution.

Cooking with paracetamol causes Kidney failure -NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned food vendors and others against the use of paracetamol as tenderiser in cooking meat and beans, saying it can cause kidney and liver failure.

Mrs Roseline Ajayi, the Kwara Coordinator of NAFDAC, said this on Thursday in Ilorin during sensitisation programme for fast food operators and food vendors on dangers of using the drug to cook.

Ajayi said “the use of paracetamol to tenderise meat and beans while cooking may be considered as a way to cut cost, but with grevious and unprecedented health implications, which include liver and kidney failure.”

The NAFDAC coordinator explained that paracetamol is a drug used to treat pain and fever, belonging to the class of drugs referred to as analgesic and anti-pyretics.

According to her, the common brand names available are panadol, Emzor paracetamol, commonly available in tablets, caplets and syrup dosage forms and is over the counter drug which is readily accessible.

She noted that foods provide nutritional support for life, while drug is a substance used in treatment, cure, and prevention of diseases.

She warned that “foods are not drugs and it’s a necessity for life, while drug is indicated for or against ailment.

“When drug is used for cooking, it is hydrolyzed or broken down into components, which include 4-aminophenol, a highly toxic chemical to the kidney and liver.

“NAFDAC is compelled to respond to the emerging food safely issues, which is capable of consuming the health of several unsuspecting and innocent victims and citizens.”

She, therefore, warned people who patronise food vendors either Bukateria, cafeteria or fast foods that they may be exposed to indiscriminate intake of paracetamol unknowingly, which is harmful to their health.

Tension as Nnamdi Kanu parents’ burial holds today

There is palpable tension as all is set for the burial today of Eze Israel Kanu and his wife, Sally, the parents of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The burial will hold in Isiama Afaraukwu in the Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The Punch observed on Thursday that there was heavy presence of policemen at the command’s headquarters ready for action during the burial.

Earlier in the day, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Mr Ene Okon, ordered the removal of Close Circuit Television installed by unknown persons around Isiama Afaraukwu Umuahia ahead of the burial of Eze Israel Kanu and his wife Sally.

He said while individuals had the right to install CCTV in their homes, nobody had the right to install one on public properties on the street because of its security implications.

Okon spoke during a final meeting with the elders of the three communities that made up Afaraukwu on Thursday at the command’s headquarters in Umuahia. The meeting was meant to avert crisis.

He said the command had made plans to police the burial venue and would implement it to the latter.

He maintained that the state police command was ready to provide security during the burial of the monarch and his wife, adding that he had no plans to scuttle the burial.

He said, “I invited the elders of the Afaraukwu communities to tell you how prepared we are for the burial of the deceased monarch and his wife.

“I’m sure that the community selected February 14 as the burial date for the King and his queen to indicate the love they have for each other and I commend you for that.

“I want to assure that we are prepared to provide security during the burial of the monarch and beyond; but the police would not fold its arms and watch any group truncate the peace of Afaraukwu and Abia State in the name of IPOB, which is a proscribed organisation.”

The CP urged the elders to warn the Leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to desist from playing propaganda with his parents’ burial.

Katsina housewives chained for 10 months seek divorce

Two housewives whose husband, Samaila Musa, allegedly locked up, chained and subjected to inhuman treatment for 10 months in the Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Thursday urged a Katsina Upper Sharia Court to dissolve their marriage to the man.

Fatima and Hadiza, both 20, prayed the court to dissolve their marriage, insisting that Musa violated their fundamental human rights.

The housewives told the Sharia Court that Musa, among others, starved, prevented them from interacting with their family members and forcefully shaved their hairs for unknown purposes.

The duo further told the court that if permitted, they were ready to expose other atrocities that Musa allegedly perpetrated against them.

The two women, who were present at the court sitting, showed the pictures of their alleged maltreatment.

Their counsel, Hamisu Malumfashi, who led a team of lawyers to the court, cited several instances in the Holy Quran to justify the divorce request.

Malumfashi told the court that there were witnesses, including the police, who were ready to testify in the case.

Musa, who was also brought to the court by the police, denied all the allegations.

He told the court that he was being framed up.

The court’s Alkali (judge), Ali Ingawa, adjourned the case till  February 20, 2020, to enable the witnesses to testify.

A Katsina-based non-governmental organisation, Gender and Social Inclusion, had approached the court on behalf of the duo and filed a case of infringement on their human rights.

The police had on  January 23, 2020, arrested Musa following a tip-off at Yan-Mabayye village in Rimi  LGA.

The spokesman for the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah, who gave reasons for the arrest, said on January 23, 2020, around 3.30pm, a team of policemen, led by DPO Rimi division, uncovered the house where the suspect incarcerated his two wives and shackled them with a chain in one room.

He said, “In the course of investigation, the police discovered that the victims had marks and signs of brutalisation on their bodies. They defecated in the same room where they were chained and their hair barbed for ritual purposes by the suspect.

“He also ground pepper and put it in their private parts and eyes, among others, during their menstrual periods. The suspect also asked them to clean up the semen on their clothes after having sex with them and forced them to drink the water.”

Khloe Kardashian's awkward response to Kim inviting her ex Tristan out for dinner

Khloe Kardashian was taken back by surprise after sister Kim revealed she invited her ex-boyfriend Tristan Thompson for dinner.

Khloe, 35, was cringing when Kim let slip she invited Tristan, 28, out for dinner after the pair bumped into each other in New York.

In a new teaser for the upcoming season 18 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim shared she was trying to repair her relationship with Khloe's NBA ex.

Fireworks exploded last year when the Tristan and Jordyn Woods cheating scandal rocked the showbiz circuit.

In a FaceTime conversation, Kim tried to soften the blow to her sister by divulging it was the basketball player who had got in contact with her first.

Kim said: "I was leaving the Mercer Hotel and then I get a call on my cellphone from Tristan. And he was like, 'Oh my god! I'm right next door.'

"And he's like, 'What are you doing?' And I was like, 'I'm gonna go have dinner with my friends.' So, I was like, 'Do you wanna come?'"

Khloe had been completely oblivious and she was surprised by the development in the saga.

"You invited him to dinner?" Khloe asked.

Kim said: "But I was just like, Oh my god, what did I do? Should I not invite him to dinner?"

Khloe tried to be as understanding as possible as she maintained her cool while chatting to Kim.

She told Kim: "I think you gotta do what's best for you.

"If you want him to have a drink at the end, there's nothing wrong with that. That's beyond generous of you."

Kim added: "I don't think what Tristan did was, obviously, right... Obviously, I can't. That's not my thing and I brutalized him."

"But, I also know that that's True's dad and that mom [Kris Jenner] cheated on dad, you know what I mean? And all of their friends forgave mom."

Khloe heaped on the praise to her sister for "doing a nice thing" but she admitted she was still surprised the pair went to dinner.

Kim added: "I think forgiveness is the best way."

Khloe and Tristan's relationship crumbled after it was claimed the basketball player kissed Kylie Jenner's ex-BFF Jordyn.

The pair have remained amicable while raising their daughter True Thomspon.
