US threatens to withdraw $380 Abacha loot

The United States Government has warned that it will recover the over $308million looted and stashed abroad by former Head of State, the late Gen Sani Abacha, if it is re-stolen in Nigeria.

The threat followed a February 4 repatriation pact the Federal Government signed with the Americans and the government of Jersey to return the money.

The pact was sealed 22 years after Abacha’s death and after almost two decades of litigation involving the three parties.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which partook in what is being regarded as the world’s largest asset recovery across borders, said the foreigners warned against the money being re-looted.

The Commission’s Secretary, Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, stated this in Lagos last Friday during an anti-corruption walk organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Olukoyede said: “Two weeks ago, I was privileged to be on the team that went to recover $308million for Nigeria. They are from Washington.

“You know what the Oyinbos told us when we wanted to sign the treaty? They had the audacity to look into our eyes and said: ‘If you people steal this money again, we will collect it back from you.’

“I stood up against them, I said: ‘We are not a corrupt nation. A few people might have stolen money, but Nigeria is not a corrupt nation. We have a lot of youths who are not corrupt.

“And you know it is not their fault, (they said that) because they have seen recovered loot being looted again.”

Public money looted by Abacha during his five years in power is estimated to be about $5 billion.

Since 1998, Nigeria has been finding the loot mostly in the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and New Jersey.

Prince Andrew linked to another billionaire accused of r.a.p.e

Prince Andrew might want to think more about where he stays on vacation.

The prince was not only buddies with Jeffrey Epstein -- both a convicted pedophile and an accused s.e.x trafficker -- but now he’s linked with billionaire fashion executive Peter Nygard, who is accused of r.a.p.e and sodomy in a scathing federal class-action lawsuit.

Nygard lured “a slew of young disadvantaged teens to his Bahamian mansion under the promise of fame and fortune,” then r.a.p.e.d, sodomized and coerced them to engage in depraved fetishes, alleges the lawsuit, which was filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court.

And now it has come to light that in 2000, Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson stayed at Nygard Cay, near Nassau, Bahamas, with their daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie.

Pictures of the visit, obtained by the Daily Mail, show the prince and Nygard strolling together at the luxury estate.

There is no evidence that the Duke of York knew anything about Nygard’s alleged activities.

Andrew has also faced scrutiny over his friendship with Epstein, whose body was found last summer in his Manhattan jail cell. Late last year, the Duke - who also stayed with the convicted child s.e.x offender told the Guardian newspaper that he regretted the visits but thought he was doing the “honorable” thing at the time.

The lawsuit also alleges Nygard used yachts to transport drugs and liquor for the parties and kept a database with the names of 7,500 “potential victims” for decades.

Andrew and Sarah stayed with Nygard in the Bahamas during the time that the lawsuit makes the accusations against Nygard.

Wife who set up spy cam to catch 'cheating' husband discovers he's grooming teenager

A wife who installed a hidden camera in her husband's office in a bid to catch him cheating on her was horrified when the footage revealed he was grooming a teenage girl.

Anthony Merrikin was jailed for six years after he was caught in the act by his suspicious spouse who initially feared he was having an extra-marital affair.

The 42-year-old builder of Blundell Avenue, Cleethorpes, admitted three offences of sexual activity with a child and another of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

A court heard that his indiscretions happened during a "moment of madness" that was completely wrong, according to the Grimsby Telegraph.

Jeremy Evans, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that Merrikin, who had set up a charity with his wife and was a member of a marching band, groomed the teenage girl and there was sexual behaviour between them in his office.

Merrikin's wife suspected that he was cheating on her with another woman and set up a hidden camera in his office.

But to her "shock and dismay"  it revealed that he was sexually involved with the girl. She confronted him with a text message image from the filming and he immediately confessed.

"At the heart of this, he deceived his family," said Mr Evans.

The girl later said: "Throughout this time, I just felt that I was worthless. I felt that I was dirty.

"I felt horrible for deceiving my mother.

"I am living in constant fear that something is going to happen.

"At the time this was happening with Tony, I felt trapped and scared. I know what was happening with Tony was wrong."

She felt it hard to concentrate at school but it was also an escape.

"I struggle to think about what has happened," said the girl.

"I cry a lot. It hurts a lot. I try not to think about Tony because it brings back bad memories.

"I still think about what happened every day."

Nigeria among countries vulnerable to coronavirus outbreak - World Health Organisation (WHO) warns

Besides Egypt, which already has a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), researchers and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have identified Algeria and South Africa as African countries most at risk while Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Angola, Tanzania, Ghana and Kenya as having moderate chance of importing the virus.

The researchers, in a study published in Nature, said they were most concerned about Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Angola, Tanzania, Ghana and Kenya because of their weak healthcare systems, low economic status and unstable political situation which make them highly vulnerable.

WHO Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, had said the agency’s decision to declare the outbreak a global health emergency, was mainly based on concerns that the epidemic could spread in nations with fragile healthcare platforms.

For that reason, researchers are also worried about the disease spreading among people in Africa.

An epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, United States and a co-author of the Harvard team’s model, Marc Lipsitch, said though Africa was not as exposed to the ailment as those nations in South East Asia due to direct international flights from Wuhan.

But, he nonetheless feared that a large number of Chinese labourers on the continent and their travels between China and Africa were a possible route for transmission.

The analysis, posted on medRxiv, examined flights to Africa from Chinese cities that had reported infections, but it excluded towns in Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, because of the lockdown that has restricted travels from many locations there since late January.

He said: “On 15/02/2020, at about 11:48a.m. following intelligence report, police detectives attached to Ogbunike Division arrested at Oye Olisa Market, Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area, one Mrs. Ngozi Dike, aged 37, of Umuaka Town, Isu-Njaba LGA of Imo State.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is neither blind nor afflicted with any ailment as she claimed.”

Haruna added that the woman got the two children she uses from their parents, whom she deceived that she wants to train the girls in school, but brought them to the town instead to use them for begging in the market, stating further that the case is under investigation after which the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.

Tragic last photo of Caroline Flack just HOURS before she killed herself

This is believed to be the last photograph of Caroline Flack, pictured on Valentine's Day just hours before she killed herself.

Flack's friend Mollie Grosberg, a TV producer, posted the picture in an Instagram story, saying: 'Our funny valentine bought us cookies and oat milk this year.'

Grosberg added that she is looking after Flack's dog Ruby, and it comes as reports emerged last night that Flack had warned police she would take her own life.

The 40-year-old troubled star was taking anti-depressants as she battled mental health problems and was terrified of the prospect of her upcoming trial.

It was claimed yesterday paramedics had been sent to her home the day before she was found dead, following fears for her welfare, but she was not taken to hospital.

The distraught TV presenter was understood to be horrified by the prospect of a 'show trial' over an alleged assault on her boyfriend and was worried she could not cope with the fallout.

Friends said she was tormented over the idea of a jury being shown police 'bodycam' footage taken during the night she was accused of attacking Lewis Burton, 27. She had hoped the trial would not go ahead.

A court had heard police found the pair covered in blood and that Miss Flack had cuts to her wrist.

The revelations about her mental health prompted questions about whether she was given enough help to tackle her depression and panic attacks.

Police last night refused to reveal if they had referred the star to mental health services.

Man attacks medical workers, stabs nurse over son’s death

An aggrieved father has attacked medical workers at the Sapele Central Hospital, Delta State, over the death of his child at the medical facility.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the man went berserk minutes after medical workers broke the news of the death of his one-year-six-month-old child to him.

The man, whose identity could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, was alleged to have accused the doctors and nurses on duty of complicity in the child’s death and vowed that “one of them must die with his son.”

The incident happened on Wednesday around 4pm.

According to a source, the bereaved father attempted to stab a nurse in the throat, but missed.

The suspect was also alleged to have chased one of the doctors in an attempt to stab him, but the latter escaped.

The source said, “The baby was brought in with a bad health condition. The accident and emergency unit resuscitated and admitted him to the children ward.

“The doctors there reviewed the case and commenced medication. Being that the condition was already very bad, maybe the father expected a miraculous recovery, but the condition deteriorated further and the baby died.

“The child’s father was angry that the doctors and nurses could not save him. He threatened that anybody he saw would die with the child. He saw one of the nurses inside the ward and attacked her.

“He first gave the nurse a headbutt and the lady fell. He beat her up and brought out an object. He attempted to stab her in the neck, but the lady dodged it and the object landed on her ear and almost cut it off.

“When people raised the alarm, he rushed back to the children ward and fled with the baby’s corpse. The management of the hospital reported to the police.”

The Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying she could not tell the gravity of the injury sustained by the nurse.

The Medical Director of the Central Hospital, Sapele, Dr Benedict Ogbimi, noted that the case had been charged to court.

Lagos begins Eko City market next sunday

Lagos State Government says its Eko City Farmers’ Market will upgrade the agricultural supply value chains in the state by connecting the value chains with their markets.

Agric Commissioner Prince Gbolahan Lawal, who disclosed this in Lagos at the weekend, noted that the Eko City Farmers’ Markets is a platform where the best of Lagos producers will meet with consumers and end users by using the traditional and innovative development methods to showcase a well organised high quality market to meet the consumers’ ever increasing demand for farm produce.

Lawal, who said that the maiden edition of the market would hold in Lagos next Sunday at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island and subsequently hold every last Sunday of every month, noted that the market would help the rebuilding of the local food economies by providing a cost-effective, retail sales prospect for local food producers in Lagos State and across Southwestern states.

“The notable objectives of the Eko City Farmers’ Market are to provide Lagosians access to a wide variety of fresh, local, in-season farm products direct from the producers; to make Lagos the most desirable destination for businesses with direct socio-economic impact and beneficial returns; and an avenue to further champion regional integration through composite economic development, leveraging on the existing relationship with the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission to coordinate the participation of other states,” the commissioner said.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva apologises to President Buhari over Bayelsa loss

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva has apologised to President Muhammadu Buhari for “disruption to his busy schedule” by the Thursday Supreme Court judgment that truncated the inauguration of David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Bayelsa State governor.

He said the apology was necessary because he was aware that the President, his wife, Aisha and top Presidency officials had made preparations to be in Yenagoa on Friday to witness Lyon take his oath of office as the successor of Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sylva, a former governor of the oil-reach state in Nigeria, described as a “temporary setback,” the judgment that produced Douye Diri of the PDP as governor.

He called on all APC members in the state not to take laws in their hands as the party’s leadership in the state, had initiated moves with their lawyers to study the verdict.

To Buhari and the national leadership of the ruling party, he said: “APC in Bayelsa remains strong and its members resolute in our support for the ideals of a greater and prosperous Nigeria.”

The statement reads: I want to use this moment to call on all the people of our dear state Bayelsa to kindly shun all acts of violence and lawlessness. Also of great importance to me is to extend my profound apology to our President over the avoidable disruption to his busy schedule which was caused by the events of the moment.

“I am aware that Mr. President and his wife, Aisha Buhari, had concluded arrangements to travel to Bayelsa State to witness the inauguration of the APC governorship candidate as governor. I therefore extend my apology to Mr. President and members of his entourage.

“To the good people of Bayelsa, I would like to emphasise the need for restraint at all times. No doubt the events of the last few days are as painful as they are regrettable. But, however, tempting it might be for anyone to take the law into their hands. Such temptation must be resisted in the greater interest of our state and the political stability of the country at large.

The leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress has directed its team of legal experts to study the situation critically and proffer legal options available to the party accordingly.

“We should therefore all remain faithful to, and have confidence in, the wisdom and ability of the party leadership to provide direction at this very sensitive time.

“Once again I call on all people of Bayelsa State irrespective of whatever differences there may be to eschew violence and respect the security measures put in place by appropriate authorities.

”Let me conclude by assuring Mr. President and our party hierarchy that despite this temporary setback, APC in Bayelsa remains strong.”

The Supreme Court verdict and the inauguration of Duoye last Friday drew the ire of some thugs who went on rampage, destroying property in the homes of former governor Dickson and Diri.

Knife wielding armed robbers steal hundreds of toilet rolls in Hong Kong as coronavirus causes shortage

Armed robbers in Hong Kong made off with hundreds of toilet rolls worth more than HKD1,000.

Toilet rolls are currently in short supply in Hong Kong due to shortages caused by panic-buying during the coronavirus outbreak.

Knife wielding men robbed a delivery man outside a supermarket in the Mong Kok district, police said.

Police have arrested two men and recovered some of the stolen loo rolls, local media reports said.

The armed robbery took place in Mong Kok, a district of Hong Kong with a history of "triad" crime gangs, early on Monday.

According to local reports, the robbers had threatened a delivery worker who had unloaded rolls of toilet paper outside Wellcome Supermarket.

An Apple Daily report said that 600 toilet paper rolls, valued at around HKD1,695 ($218; £167), had been stolen.

Stores across the city have seen supplies massively depleted with long queues when new stock arrives.

Boko haram terrorists reportedly rejected ransom FG was willing to pay for Leah Sharibu

Much earlier in the days of her terrorist abduction, there was a spirited attempt by the Federal Government acting through third parties to pay a ransom in a bid to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, but her abductors who had made the financial demand backed out when payment was offered.

According to knowledgeable government sources last night, the money was already to be delivered when the terrorists who had made the request for a specific amount totaling several tonnes of millions of Naira in hard currency, changed their minds and rejected any ransom.

While the channels of communication between top security agents of the government, third parties and the terrorists at times take more than a month to complete one line of messages back and forth, the FG reached an agreement after such a long communication procedure only to be turned back after an agreement.

In the circumstances the FG determined to secure the release requested for an explanation as to the sudden refusal to receive the ransom by the terrorists only to be told by some of the third line communication channels that the terrorists decided they would never accept a ransom on Leah because they hoped to use her abduction to rankle religious passion and possibly cause a religious war in the country if they could.

According to a government source, “while the FG remains strongly committed to securing the release of Leah and all other identified and unidentified abductees, by any means necessary, the terrorists chose much earlier after Leah’s abduction to use her to fan religious embers and cause devastating division in the country. And that was why the terrorists rejected the ransom government security agencies prepared to pay for Leah’s release.”

The source explained further that top presidential officials still encouraged FG officials to remain actively engaged with the channels of communication and the negotiators until a positive resolution is secures “because the President has set a firm target and resolve to ensure the freedom of Leah and others by any means necessary.”

Japan suffers worst economic slump in 5 years

Japan has suffered its worst quarterly GDP contraction in more than five years, with a tax hike and a deadly typhoon taking a toll on the world’s third-largest economy.

The nation’s gross domestic product in the three months to December shrank 1.6 percent from the previous quarter, even before the novel coronavirus outbreak in China hit Japan, according to official data published on Monday.

The quarter was marked by a rise in consumption tax from eight percent to 10 percent, as well as Typhoon Hagibis, which killed more than 100 people and caused widespread flooding.

Economists were braced for a contraction of around one percent but had not expected such a poor figure, with Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute, saying it was “quite an undershooting”.

“There was a hit from natural disasters but consumer sentiment was particularly weak after the tax hike despite government measures to ease the impact,” he told AFP.

Monday’s data snapped four quarters of growth and was the biggest contraction since the second quarter of 2014 when the economy shrank 1.9 percent.

America finally evacuates citizens from quarantined ship

Two planes carrying Americans from the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess have left Japan.

The aircraft chartered by the US government left Tokyo's Haneda Airport in the early hours of Monday.

There were some 400 Americans on board the ship, which has been held since 3 February due to infections from the new coronavirus which has hit China.

The Diamond Princess has been quarantined in Japan's port of Yokohama with some 3,700 people on board.

The ship was held after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was found to have the virus.

It has the largest cluster of coronavirus cases outside China. The Japanese authorities on Sunday said the number of new cases on board the ship had risen by 70 to 355.
