There is panic in Port Harcourt, Rivers State as fuel scarcity hits the city, following an action by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.
Many filling stations in the city have refused to sell while others are closed this morning.
The fuel scarcity follows a strike action by tanker drivers in the state.
It would be recalled that there have been unresolved issues between the Demobilisation Taskforce of the state government and tankers drivers in the state.
It was learned that the taskforce had impounded two tankers and arrested some drivers over an offence that could not be ascertained at press time and had refused to release the same despite some interventions by NUPENG.
Chairman of NUPENG, Port Harcourt Zone, Mr Alex Egwanwo, disclosed that the cause of the action was following the lingering issues between the state government taskforce and the Union.
Egwanwo noted that its members were still been detained alongside their trucks, regretting that the government failed to implement the outcome of their meeting.
He said: “You are aware of the lingering issue between the government taskforce and the Union. As we speak our members are still in detention and their trucks still ceased.
“Let the government release our members and their trucks. We are not after those arrested in illegal business, but those our members who they arrested without due cause.
“We embarked on this action to protect the interest of our members. We understand the plight of the masses which we are part of but, we want social justice for our members.”

A dad said has been left in agony with a permanent erection after an operation to fix his damaged manhood left it stuck upright.
James Scott, a former glazier, suffered serious pelvic injuries after 1.5 tons of glass fell on him at work four years ago.
The 57-year-old suffered four injuries in his groin area, fractured a bone at the bottom of his spine, had lacerations on both legs and suffered a blocked urethra.
The dad of one underwent an operation to repair his p.e.n.i.s problem two years ago. However, this left him with further complications and unable to get an erection, he told the Daily Record.
But an operation to fix that has now left him with a permanent erection.
Now, he says he is a prisoner in his own home as he can't put trousers on and is in constant pain.
He also can't have his nine-year-old daughter round to visit as he can't get rid of his stiff p.e.n.i.s.
But he claims doctors have refused to visit his home to sort out the painful problem.
James, from Balornock, in Glasgow, said: "After the operation, I wasn't able to get an erection, so I had another op. They inserted metal rods into my p.e.n.i.s.
"I was told it would be sore for about six to eight weeks after but I never expected anything like this.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a 60-year-old fish-farmer, Muyiwa Otuyalo, for attempting to smuggle a substance believed to be hard drug for his son, Damilola Otuyalo, who is currently in the custody of the commission’s Ibadan zonal office.
The older Otuyalo was at the premises of the EFCC in Ibadan on Monday, supposedly to visit his son. But while discussing with the son, an officer noticed that he brought out a sachet of tablets and handed same to him. The officer subsequently raised alarm which led to the confiscation of the drug.
When the in-house nurse was called upon for assessment of the content, it was revealed that the said item was Rohypnol, a tranquilizer used under strict prescription for treatment of severe insomnia and assist in anesthesia.
The drug is said to possess high sedative effect and is rarely used except when prescribed by licensed medical officers.
The younger Otuyalo was recently arrested after a criminal case of money laundering detected in the United Kingdom and reported against him. The case which involved £45,000 was a fragment of a wider one involving about £500,000 for which he has been declared wanted by the London’s Metropolitan Police. He has been on the wanted list of the International Police, Interpol, before the petition was filed at the EFCC, Ibadan zonal office.
Officers of the Nigerian Interpol were already in contact with the commission in respect of the said case before the suspect’s father attempted to smuggle in the hard drug for him.
Further investigations are ongoing, even as the commission intends to hand him over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), for possible prosecution of the suspected narcotic case.
