NURTW: Mc Oluomo, others asks Makinde to revert proscription on union’s activities in the state

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Southwest on Tuesday urged Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to revert the proscription decision on the union’s activities in the state.

It issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government to also revert the appointment of ex-chairman of a faction of the union in the state, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxiliary, as the chairman, Disciplinary Committee for the motor parks.

The union threatened that NURTW will begin strike if the decision is not rescinded by the government
At a briefing at the zonal secretariat complex in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the union accused the governor of “deliberate attempt to take away our means of livelihood.”

Those at the briefing included Southwest Zonal Chairman Mr. Olamilekan Folorunso, Deputy Chairman Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo, National Deputy General-Secretary and Chairman, Caretaker Committee Oyo State chapter, Comrade Kayode Agbeyangi and a Zonal Trustee, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle aka Sego.

The speech was read by Agbeyangi.

According to them, NURTW is a trade union recognised by the constitution and extant provision of labour laws.
They described the interference as undue and a violation of members’ freedom of operating as a union.
The union urged the government to stop interfering in the affairs of the union and allow the NURTW to carry out its legitimate duties.

Agbeyangi condemned Governor Seyi Makinde’s imposition of park managers to run the operations of the union at parks.

He also accused the governor of acting the script of some individuals to truncate the activities of the union and arrest its leaders.

US visa ban on Nigerians not permanent -U.S Ambassador

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Mary Beth Leonard, has said the recent ban on the granting of fresh residency visa to Nigerians is not permanent but subject to review if certain conditions are met.

She said the ban was based on the United States’ concerns for information sharing between Washington and Abuja and not about character definition of Nigeria as being erroneously peddled.

Speaking yesterday during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, in Abuja, Leonard said the US would like to see Nigeria work harder towards diversifying its economy and exploiting the huge entrepreneurial manpower abound in the country.

On the visa restriction, the ambassador said: “I need to clarify something for you here. The immigrant visa ban does not affect people who are currently resident in the United States. It does not cancel the status of anyone who is currently in the United States. What the Secretary of State, Mike Pompey, said was something that was meant to be temporary.

And it is about problems with information sharing, which are investigable, achievable and resolvable and we look forward to Nigeria in a very short time being able to meet those information sharing goal so that the decision can be reviewed”.

Leonard said students visas were not affected by the current visa ban.

According to her. Nigeria should look inwards to exploit the huge entrepreneurial manpower and diversify its economy.

Passengers leave virus-riddled cruise ship in Japan after 14-day quarantine

Relieved passengers began leaving a coronavirus-wracked cruise ship in Japan today, Wednesday (Feb 19) after testing negative for the disease that has now claimed more than 2,000 lives in China.

The Diamond Princess has proved a fertile breeding ground for the virus with at least 542 positive cases, and Japan has faced mounting criticism for its quarantine arrangements as the passengers disperse.

"I'm relieved ... I want to take a good rest," a 77-year-old Japanese passenger, who declined to give his name. He said he would be boarding Japan's famously crowded railway system to go home.

Yellow-dotted city buses, plus a dozen or so taxis, were lined up to whisk the passengers into the wider world, many of them dragging their luggage behind them.

Some of the passengers waved as they left to those still on board the ship, some of whom could be seen waving back from balconies.

The ship is the biggest cluster outside China, where new figures showed the death toll surging beyond 2,000 with more than 74,000 infected. Hundreds more cases have been reported in two dozen countries.

Ben Affleck calls divorce from Jennifer Garner ‘the biggest regret of my life’

Ben Affleck says his divorce from Jennifer Garner is “the biggest regret” of his life.

The actor opened up to The New York Times about his personal life, including the end of his relationship with Garner and his history with alcohol abuse and sobriety.

Affleck and Garner, who have three children together, were married in 2005 and divorced in 2018.

“The biggest regret of my life is this divorce,” Affleck said of the split.

He elaborated on his feelings, adding: “Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”

Affleck went on to say it’s not healthy for him to “obsess over” over past “failures”.

“I have certainly made mistakes. I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward,” he added.

Photo: I stabbed my customer to death out of anger, says drinking bar owner

A  53-year-old owner of a drinking bar, Obioma Dennis, has admitted killing one of his customers out of anger.

According to him, the deceased and two of his friends who were smoking Indian hemp in front of his joint, had attacked him for rebuking them.

The suspect who is being detained at the Homicide section of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (SCIID), Panti Street, Yaba, under the watch of DCP Yetunde Longe, attributed his action to the handwork of one of his competitor and landlord who may have charmed him.

He said: “I regret my action because the deceased is a young man I know. I stabbed him in anger”.

Narating how the drama started, he said he got three telephone calls from an unknown numbers on January 22, being the day of the unfortunate incident. He rushed to his bar located at No. 17, Jogosimi Street, Alausa, Ikeja, which is opposite his residence, only to see the deceased, one Ifeanyi and two others smoking substances suspected to be Indian hemp in front of his bar.

According to him, all efforts to make them desist from further smoking in front of his bar fell on deaf ears. “In rage, I grabbed hold of the chair they were sitting on, which is mine and threw it inside my shop. While I was inside my shop, one of the guys who I later identified as Emeka started destroying my electronic appliances.

“He smashed my television. To save what was left of my belongings, I pushed him out of my shop. The next thing I saw was that Ifeayi grabbed a bottle of beer and smashed it on my head. I ran into the inner part of the shop where we prepare food. I grabbed one of the kitchen knives and stabbed Ifeanyi on his chest. He fell down in a pool of blood holding his chest.

“I regret my action now because Ifeanyi is like my younger brother. I contributed cash when his father died three years ago. If I was not gripped by anger, I don’t think I would see myself killing anyone”, he said.

The police said the suspect was arrested and detained at Alausa Police Station but that the case was later transferred to SCIID, Panti for elaborate investigation. “It is a clear case of culpable homicide. The case would be charged to court at the end of investigation’, the police said.

BVN requirement for new e-passport not acceptable – Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike said Nigeria has failed if her way to check corruption is by requesting Bank Verification Number (BVN) as a condition for obtaining the new e-passport.

Wike, who spoke on Tuesday at the roll-out of the enhanced international e-passport in Port Harcourt, said he was shocked when he was informed that his BVN will be needed to obtain an international passport.

He noted that the method would create problems for couples intending to travel with their families and urged NIS to revisit the requirement.

Wike said: “I was surprised when I was told to present my Bank Verification Number (BVN). Assuming I want to travel with my one-year-old child, does it mean my child cannot travel with me because he does not have a bank account?

“I don’t know how the BVN has become a factor in the issuance of international passport. That is not acceptable. If this is the only way to check corruption, then we have failed.

“As a governor, you know my salary; you know my account and this can be collected from the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). It is not hidden.”

Wike, however, praised the NIS for introducing the e-passport with 10-year validity, saying it would help in acquiring long-term visas.

He also hailed the agency for the improved security features on the passport.

“Introducing the e-passport is laudable because of its improved security features and others. The 10-year validity will afford people the opportunity to have longer visas,” he said.

Border closure: Customs rakes in N6BILION DAILY

Nigeria rakes in between N5 billion and N6 billion daily from imports since the closure of its land borders with neighbouring countries.

Prior to the closure in August 2019, daily duty collections hovered between N4 billion and N5 billon, said the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos on Tuesday.

The NCS Comptroller-General Col. Hammed Ali (rtd.) attributed the rise to increased activities at the nation’s seaports.

”The NCS daily collection before the border closure ranged between N4 to N5 billion but now, the NCS collects N5billion to N6 billion daily as a result of the rise in activities at the nation’s sea ports,” Ali said on Tuesday at a forum on the “impact of land border closure on the Nigerian economy.”

The forum was organized by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and the support of Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) in Lagos.

Despite trade wars, Trump says US 'open for business'

US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on billions of dollars in goods and launched disputes with most key US trading partners over the past three years.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he wants to avoid policies that make it difficult for other countries to do business with the United States -- even as his administration has done precisely the opposite.

Trump has imposed tariffs on billions of dollars in goods and launched disputes with most key US trading partners over the past three years, but in a lengthy Twitter thread, the president said, "We don't want to make it impossible to do business with us. That will only mean that orders will go to someplace else."

"The United States cannot, & will not, become such a difficult place to deal with in terms of foreign countries buying our product, including for the always used National Security excuse, that our companies will be forced to leave in order to remain competitive," he tweeted.

Trump appeared to be directing his tweets at hardliners in his White House, referring to a proposal to block General Electric from selling jet engines to China.

"I want China to buy our jet engines, the best in the World," he said. "I have seen some of the regulations being circulated... and they are ridiculous."

US officials are considering denying a license to CFM International, a joint venture between GE and France's Safran SA, to export more of its jet engines to China, the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend, citing people familiar with the discussions.

The report said the aim was to cripple development of China's Comac airliner.

Gerard Piqué calls journalist defending Barça president a 'puppet'

Gerard Piqué appears to have stoked the fire of Barcelona’s behind the scenes unrest by hitting back at a journalist on Twitter.

All has not been well at Camp Nou since Lionel Messi recently slammed Eric Abidal on Instagram after the sporting director appeared to accuse the club’s players of not trying hard enough for former coach Ernesto Valverde.

Then, an explosive story from Cadena SER earlier this week claimed the club had hired a company called I3 Ventures to create disparaging social media posts about Messi, Piqué, former players and possible presidential candidates.

Speaking on Tuesday, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu categorically denied the story but did admit they had hired a service at the end of 2017 to monitor the club’s reputation in different areas of social media.

Later in the day, Barcelona-based journalist Marçal Lorente tweeted in support of the club’s board …

“For many years I have known the Barça environment and the idiosyncrasy of the supporters and fortunately, the club is becoming less manipulable and more intelligent and knows how to perfectly identify who wants to reach Barça to use it for their media, political and economic interests,” wrote Lorente.

But in response to that tweet, Piqué made it pretty clear that he doesn’t buy either Bartomeu’s denial or Lorente’s defence whatsoever …

“Titella” wrote the 33-year-old, which means “Puppet” in Spanish.

Strike causes fuel scarcity in Rivers state

There is panic in Port Harcourt, Rivers State as fuel scarcity hits the city, following an action by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.

Many filling stations in the city have refused to sell while others are closed this morning.

The fuel scarcity follows a strike action by tanker drivers in the state.

It would be recalled that there have been unresolved issues between the Demobilisation Taskforce of the state government and tankers drivers in the state.

It was learned that the taskforce had impounded two tankers and arrested some drivers over an offence that could not be ascertained at press time and had refused to release the same despite some interventions by NUPENG.

Chairman of NUPENG, Port Harcourt Zone, Mr Alex Egwanwo, disclosed that the cause of the action was following the lingering issues between the state government taskforce and the Union.

Egwanwo noted that its members were still been detained alongside their trucks, regretting that the government failed to implement the outcome of their meeting.

He said: “You are aware of the lingering issue between the government taskforce and the Union. As we speak our members are still in detention and their trucks still ceased.

“Let the government release our members and their trucks. We are not after those arrested in illegal business, but those our members who they arrested without due cause.

“We embarked on this action to protect the interest of our members. We understand the plight of the masses which we are part of but, we want social justice for our members.”
