Killings: CAN declares Jan 21 annual national prayer day

The Christian Association of Nigeria on Friday declared January 21 of every year as its day of national prayers for the persecuted Christians in the country.

The decision was taken in honour of the  slain  CAN Chairman in the Michika Local Government of Adamawa State, Rev Lawan Andimi, and other victims of Boko Haram  and herdsmen attacks.

The resolution to honour Andimi, according to the President of CAN, Rev Samson Ayokunle, became imperative in honour of all the Christians being killed by  Boko Haram, herdsmen, and the bandits nationwide.

A statement  by the Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the CAN President, Adebayo Oladeji, said Ayokunle called on the body of Christ in the country, especially denominational leaders to reflect the date in their annual calendar of activities.

The statement read in part, “The decision was taken on February 21  at the  just-concluded meeting of the National Executive Committee at its National Secretariat in Abuja where they also confirmed Joseph Daramola as the substantive General Secretary and Biodun Sanyaolu as the Assistant General Secretary of CAN.”

Car mechanic electrocuted by massive shock when he plugged in phone charger

A man has been killed and his girlfriend injured when when they both received electric shocks as he plugged in his mobile phone charger.

Kirill Matveev was electrocuted and his girlfriend Mira Polyshina who was stood next to him was unable to save him.

She was hit by a less severe shock and survived.

Police suspect that the electric cable on the charger was not properly insulated, but an investigation is now underway.

Mr Matveev, was a 20-year-old Lada car mechanic, and died at the scene in Yoshkar-Ola city, Russia, on Monday.

His girlfriend Mira Polyshina, 20, immediately called an ambulance but the paramedics were unable to save the electrocuted man.

The Investigative Committee in Russia’s Mari El Republic said the likely cause was “due to problems with the insulation of the wiring” on the charger.

"He put the smartphone on charge and got a shock, as did his girlfriend,” said a spokesman.

"The young man died at the scene."

A video posted by his girlfriend shows the couple together, and another was a tribute by his friends to the popular Matveev.

Mari also posted an emotional message reading: ”Forgive me for not being able to save you.

“I tried, I did everything to make you breathe, but even the ambulance crew could not.

"I love you, as you know very well …Oh, how painful it was to look at you then, when I couldn’t save you.

"Sorry, my dear..I will always remember how you carried me in your arms…You know, you are the best."

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott reportedly still have romantic feelings for each other

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are said to still have romantic feelings for each other, as fans continue to wish they'd get back together.

The former couple broke up in October amid rumours that the make up mogul, 22, was hanging out with her ex Tyga.

She denied there was any wrongdoing and insisted that she and Travis have remained close.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star said the main focus for her and her rapper ex was their two-year-old daughter Stormi, who they have continued to co-parent.

But now, it seems there's fresh hope that they could rekindle their romance.

Friends of the pair say they still have romantic feelings for each other and could get back together at some point in the future.

A source told Us Weekly: "They still spend a lot of time together as a family and have romantic feelings towards each other.

"Her family loves Travis and respect him as part of the family, but thinks it’s best for them to have some time apart as a couple and grow up a bit as adults and parents."

And it's said that Kylie's famous family would also love to see her back with Travis, 27.

A source previously told People: "Her family wants them to be together. Travis might not be perfect, but he’s a great partner and dad.

"Everyone would be upset if Kylie can’t figure things out with Travis."

It was reported recently that Travis and Kylie had been spending a lot more time together.

A source told PEOPLE: "They are very happy. It seems too early to say that they are officially back together, though.

"[Kylie] doesn't want the pressure to announce that they are back together until there is more of a commitment from Travis.

"[She] has done very well without Travis. Her family knows that she will continue to do well, even if things with Travis don’t work out."

UK warns Nigerian students against fraud, freezes 95 accounts

The United Kingdom Government has warned Nigerians intending to study in Britain to desist from money laundering and other criminal activities.

The UK gave this warning on Friday in Abuja through the UK’s National Economic Crime Centre at a meeting, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education.

The NECC said students were usually targeted through social media platforms for the use of their accounts for third party funds transfer, usually for a fee.

The Ministry of Education, in the statement by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Goong, said, “The British Government has warned intending Nigerian students to the United Kingdom against engaging in money laundering and other criminal activities. The British Government emphasised the need for students to be mindful of how their bank accounts are used, especially for the transfer of illicit funds as this will result in the termination of their studies and prosecution, when caught.

“While pledging to strengthen its fight against money laundering this year, the government disclosed that it discovered and froze 95 bank accounts, mostly belonging to international students.

“It stressed its resolve to take more concrete steps against the activities of money launderers, saying this is prompted by its plan to reintroduce a post study work visa for international graduate students in 2020 which is expected to increase the number of international students, including Nigeria.”

Daughter sues mum over rape allegation against dad

One Jessica Obinomeh and her mother, Sandra, have drawn a battle line at an Ogba magistrates’ court, Lagos State, over lingering family issues.

Obinomeh alleged that her mother and siblings tortured her with a hot iron, compelling her to lie that her father r3ped her.

The plot, according to the 20-year-old woman, was meant to shame her father who is based abroad, and his extended family.

But the mother debunked her claim, saying that she was tortured for stealing N345,000 from her (Sandra’s) account.

Obinomeh said her mother wanted to get back at her husband for allegedly marrying another woman abroad.

In a petition dated January 27, 2020 and addressed to the Divisional Police Officer, Man Centre Police Station, Ikeja, Obinomeh stated that her mother in connivance with her (Obinomeh’s) brothers, held her in a room for days and declared her missing.

She stated, “Sometime in 2016, my mother and two brothers came to pick me from my school (a private varsity) under false pretences that my father was seriously sick and flown home from abroad. I was shocked but on getting home, I discovered it was a lie.

“The next day, my mother summoned all of us (her children) to the living room and announced to us that my dad was having some issues abroad with his wife and he would not be able to come to Nigeria for now. She said she was afraid that our stepmother might come to Nigeria and fight for our father’s property.

“She said our father’s family would support her (the stepmother) and they would throw us to the street. My mother said it’s me that can help the family and she told me to say my dad s3xually abused me so that it will be a big shame on him and his family. I said I can never say such against my dad. My bothers supported my mother and they started forcing me and beating me while they tried to make a voice record of me. I was locked up in a room for almost a week and declared missing.”

Obinomeh explained that when her mother and siblings noticed she would not dance to their tune, they resorted to assaulting her. She said she surrendered because they threatened to kill her.

“My mother dragged me to herself, put my head in between her legs and held my hands. One of my brothers held my legs firmly why the other brought a hot iron and placed it on my back. The torture was too much that I agreed to do what they wanted.

“My mother told me what I must say so, so that nobody would know it was planned. They took me into the car in the compound and they started the recording. I lied to save my life,” she revealed.

She said after the recording, the family members refused to set her free because the injury on her back was fresh, adding that she eventually managed to sneak out and reported the case to her uncle. She stated that the uncle confronted her mother but she denied beating me.

“Two months after I ran away from home, my mother and brothers started calling me to console me over the death of my father. I was shocked because I wasn’t aware of my father’s death. My mother has already identified herself as a widow on Facebook but I later found out that my dad is alive.

“My mother and brothers are trailing me. I walk around in shame because my mother is spoiling my name. I want the government to bring my mother to book,” she added.

Following the petition, Sandra was arrested by the police, but she denied her daughter’s allegations, stating that the complainant was punished by her brother for stealing.

She explained that sometime in 2016, Obinomeh confessed to her that her father had been having sex with her. She said she was shocked, but she “didn’t react because the matter was really huge.”

Sandra said she had gone to the bank one day to withdraw money and was told her account was empty.

She said, “The bank printed a paper for me. In that paper, I saw transfers from my account to Jessica’s account to the tune of N345,000. It was then it dawned on me that all the while she came to my shop, she had taken my phone and transferred money from account to hers and then deleted the alerts.

“I was wondering if she was giving the money to men or using it to take drugs and I told my first son. I called her home and her brother gave her serious beating. She was not beating on the day she confessed to me her father was sleeping (having sex) with her.”

A police prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi, consequently brought Sandra before the Ogba Magistrates’ Court on three counts bordering on assault and false accusation.

Emuerhi told the court that the offences contravened sections 168(D), 245 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Sandra Obinomeh and others now at large, on September 2, 2016 and January 14, 2020, at Ikeja Magisterial District, did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace, by falsely accusing one Miss Jessica Obinomeh of having carnal knowledge with her biological father.

“That you, Sandra Obinomeh, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit, assault by placing a hot iron on one Miss Jessica Obinomeh.”

Sandra, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted her bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in the like sum. The case was adjourned till March 4, 2020.

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday killed two suspects during exchange of fire with armed robbers in Dawaki area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the FCT, DSP Anjuguri Manzah disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

He said the armed robbery gang had engaged police operatives in a fierce gun duel at the robbery scene.

Manzah said the suspects were overpowered and dislodged by police operatives while responding to a distress call from the area.

Kaduna court frees 91 shiites after four years in detention

A Kaduna State High Court has discharged and acquitted 91 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

The presiding judge, Justice Hajaratu Gwada, acquitted the defendants of the charges filed against them by the state government in her judgement delivered on Friday.

The freed members of the Shiite group were arrested during a clash with soldiers in Zaria in December 2015.

They were arraigned on five counts of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, culpable homicide, disturbance of public peace, and causing grievous hurt.

During their trial, the defence counsel had filed a no-case submission before the court on the grounds that his clients were innocent.

He also stressed that the state government had failed to prove its allegations against them beyond a reasonable doubt.

Giving her judgement, Justice Gwada struck out all the charges filed against the IMN members and acquitted them.

She held that the decision was as a result of the prosecutor to prove the allegations levelled against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.

In its reaction, the state government rejected the judgement which it described as ‘erroneous‘.

The State Director of Public Prosecution, Daris Bayero, told Channels Television that the state would appeal the judgement at a higher court until justice was served on the defendants.

In the post, Oluwo attached a video, showing him partying and dancing to a song that states that he was not pained by “abuses”.

The Osun State Traditional Council has only recommended his suspension from the council meetings and activities for six months on the guise that his conduct (being too flashy, stylish, human rights defender and swagging); and that (the suspension) is even subject to Governor’s approval. South Sudan rebel leader appointed vice president

South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Friday appointed rebel leader Riek Machar as vice president, after the two men finally agreed to form a long-delayed unity government -- a crucial step towards ending six years of war.

A presidential decree included "the appointment of the vice presidents and the dissolution of all institutions at national and state levels," Information Minister Michael Makuei told AFP.

The decree was read on state television, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, appointing Machar as the first of five vice-presidents in a bloated cabinet to accommodate various warring parties.

But consensus has only been reached on three of the four others, including current first vice president Taban Deng Gai -- a former Machar ally who defected.

James Wani Igga from Kiir's ruling party, and Rebecca Nyandeng, a former minister and Kiir ally-turned-critic are the other named vice-presidents as part of the long-awaited unity government..

The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Saturday, Makuei said.

We are not opening borders now, President Buhari tells neighbouring countries

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the partial closure of Nigeria’s land borders would remain in force.

He called on neighbouring countries affected negatively by the policy to be patient until the report of the tripartite committee made up of Nigeria, Benin and Niger Republic was ready.

Buhari spoke in Abuja when he received the President of Burkina Faso, Mr Roch Marc Christian Kabore, at the Presidential Villa.

He stated that Nigeria’s next action would be determined by the content of the report, an intervention by the Economic Community of West African States.

The Burkinabe leader heads the committee.

Buhari explained that security was the major reason Nigeria shut the borders.

“Our major problem is security; the inflow of weapons, ammunition and drugs.

“We have witnessed a decline in banditry using such weapons since the partial closure of the borders. Also, our farmers are now able to sell their rice since we stopped the inflow of foreign rice, usually dumped in the country,” he said.

However, he told Kabore that his regime was not unaware of the concerns raised by Nigeria’s neighbours over the border closure and was doing everything possible to take the next step.

“I will work as fast as I can as soon as I receive the report”, his media aide, Mr Garba Shehu, quoted him as telling Kabore.

Ticket goes for $10,000 as Wilder, Fury battle in Las Vegas

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will face each other again almost 15 months on from a controversial draw that left punters desperate for a re-run of their thrilling affair in Los Angeles.

Tickets in Las Vegas are exchanging hands for thousands of dollars, the fighters are volleying spiteful words at one another with gusto and pundits who have frequented Sin City more times than they care to remember have labelled the occasion a “monster”.

Somewhere amid the chaos is the prize of Wilder’s WBC world title. If Fury wins it, all four heavyweight belts will be shared between two British fighters – him and Anthony Joshua, who holds the IBF, WBA and WBO titles.

Wilder starts as favourite (just) before the fighters walk to the ring at around 05:00 GMT tomorrow morning.A handful of tickets remain for the fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, with prices ranging from $425 (£330) on the open market to $10,000 (£7,754) on resale.

On the Las Vegas Strip, fans can pay $100 (£77) to watch on a big screen while the fight will cost $74.99 (£58) to buy at home in the US, meaning $150m (£116m) could be raised before even accounting for ticket revenue. In terms of earnings, it will be an eight-figure night for both men.

It is the biggest heavyweight bout in 20, 30, or – if you listen to Fury – close to 50 years.

Protesters attack buses carrying Wuhan evacuees in Ukraine

Protesters attacked a convoy of buses carrying Ukrainian citizens and other nationals evacuated from the Chinese city of Wuhan, injuring nine police officers and one civilian.

As global fears and misconceptions spread about the coronavirus outbreak that originated in the city, protesters blocked roads in the Ukrainian town of Noviy Sanzhari, where 72 evacuees are to be monitored for two weeks at a medical center. Ukraine has no diagnosed cases of the novel coronavirus.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs said that "aggressive citizens" began to pelt the buses with stones, and that one man tried to hit police with a car.

"Those people who today threw stones at the evacuees ... and law enforcement officers, injured nine police officers, one of them has serious injuries, we will make a decision on their punishment," Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

Police opened criminal proceedings after the clash, the ministry said.

Video circulating on social media appeared to show residents protesting prior to the evacuees' arrival, blocking roads and confronting police.

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have sought to ease tensions over the returnees for the last two days.

In a show of solidarity, Ukraine's Health Minister Zoriana Skaletska said Thursday that she would spend the 14-day quarantine "in the same space, the same conditions" as the evacuees.

She said in a Facebook post that her daughter turns 10 today, and apologized for not celebrating it with her. It is unclear whether she has already joined the returnees.

Zelensky urged Ukrainians to remember that "we are all human" and there was no danger, in a Facebook statement on Thursday.

Boko Haram: God using insurgency to punish Nigerians for their sins – Sultan of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, has declared that God was using insurgency in the Northern part of the country to punish Nigerians for their sins.

Abubakar said Nigerians must learn to adhere to the teachings of the Quran and the Bible to escape God’s wrath.

The monarch stated this at the 5th International Conference on “Love and Tolerance: Countering Violent Extremism for Peaceful Coexistence” in Abuja, on Thursday.

Represented by the Emir of Jiwa, Dr. Idris Musa, the Sultan of Sokoto stated that the challenge of insurgency would come to an end when Nigerians stop committing sin.

He said: “The security challenge is our problem. The Holy Quran is a message to mankind. The Holy Bible is a message to mankind. If we cannot listen to what the Bible and Quran have taught us and we continue in our bad ways, what do we expect?

“It is part of the punishment we are receiving based on our sins. If we can stop committing sin and abide by God’s words, things will change.

“It is part of the punishment we are receiving based on our sins. If we can stop committing sin and abide by God’s words, things will change.”

He added: “We are appealing to everyone to live together and be our brother’s keeper and live in harmony. We should not create problems for each other.

“We can win the fight against insurgency. Everyone is afraid of each other, but I am sure that we are going to win the war. Today, it has reached a situation where a senior citizen is running away from the common man, because, he is thinking that he would lose his life, why?”

Raheem Sterling poses with Real Madrid shirt as he responds to transfer speculation

Raheem Sterling has not ruled out playing for Real Madrid in the future but insists he is "really happy" at Manchester City for now.

The 25-year-old is a reported transfer target for Real following City's two-year ban from European football for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Sterling, who posed with Real Madrid and City shirts over his shoulders, has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu in the past but he is contracted to City until 2023 and would command a hefty fee.

In a new interview with Spanish outlet AS, Sterling was asked if he would one day like to play for Madrid and responded: "How do I answer that one? Is the camera live or is it just taking pictures?

"No one knows what the future will hold. I am a player and I am always open to challenges but right now my challenge is at City and I'm really happy. I have a contract with City now and I have to respect this.

"Real Madrid are a fantastic club. When you see the white shirt you know exactly what the club stands for, it's massive."

Asked about speculation linking him with a move to the Bernabeu, Sterling said: "It's something that you see all the time, but I'm a City player and I'm enjoying it at the moment, even if things haven't gone quite planned in the league.

"We now have a massive opportunity in the Champions League."

City play Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the first leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday and the return game at Etihad Stadium on 17 March.

Sterling is facing a race to be fit in time for the tie after suffering a hamstring injury against Tottenham at the beginning of February.

George and Amal Clooney's multimillion country pile submerged under floodwater

George and Amal Clooney's lavish country pile located in Sonning-on-Thames in Berkshire has been affected by epic flooding.

The leafy grounds of the stunning Aberlash House including the tennis court, the veranda attached to the summer house and the majority of their lawns are submerged under murky floodwater after storm Dennis hit the area leaving devastation, earlier this week.

The flooded area is bigger than the house itself but luckily the main property, which is a Grade II-listed building which backs onto the River Thames, appears to not have been damaged in aerial snaps taken above the Clooney's country retreat.

The outdoor swimming pool, driveway and parts of the garden appear unaffected from the monstrous winds and heavy rainfall that hit the UK over the past week and taken five lives.

However, the flooding could become worse as more heavy rain is in the forecast in the days ahead, triggering fears of further destruction.
