Buhari breaks silence on coronavirus

President Muhammadu Buhari has spoken for the first time in more than 48 hours after the confirmation of a coronavirus case in Nigeria.

In a statement on Sunday night, Buhari expressed sadness about the case, confirmed in the commercial capital, Lagos, despite the ardent efforts of the government regarding preparedness and response measures put in place in our country’s borders and beyond.

President Buhari commended the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies whose diligence and efficiency enabled the case to be detected, diagnosed and isolated quickly, even while swift measures were taken to identify and follow up on those with whom the index patient came into contact.

The President commended the responses of the Federal Ministry of Health and Governments of Lagos and Ogun States as well as other relevant agencies to the reported incident.

He called for vigilance on the part of all citizens and responsible government agencies.

President Buhari urged Nigerians not to panic about the news of this first case of Covid-19 in our country, as undue alarm would do us more harm than good.

“Instead, Nigerians should strictly observe the advisories disseminated by the Ministry of Health, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation (WHO), on the best way to prevent infection.

“This information is being broadcast in all available media by the Federal Ministry of Information”, he said.

See pictures from inside Amir Khan's luxury home

Boxer Amir Khan and his wife Faryal Makhdoom welcomed their third child to the world last week - a son called Muhammad Zaviyar Khan.

The Olympian, 33, announced the exciting news that his son, Muhammad Zaviyar Khan had arrived with a post on Instagram to his 1.3 million followers.

He shared a photo from St Mary's Hospital of the newborn lying against his bare chest and wearing a knitted hat.

Khan wrote: "My beautiful Son Muhammad Zaviyar Khan was born today 22/02/20 weighing 7lbs 12oz."

Amir and Faryal, 28, will be welcoming their new bundle of joy to their estate in Bolton.

The couple already share two daughters – Lamaisah, who was born in 2014, and Alayna, who was born in 2018 – and have welcomed little Muhammad to the clan this week.

The tot is set to live a life of luxury from the moment he’s brought home.

Amir and Faryal’s estate includes two houses they reportedly split their time between, a trophy room for all the champion boxer’s gongs and a walk-in wardrobe bigger than most people’s ground floors.

Appearing in an episode of MTV Cribs last year, the boxer allowed fans a glimpse into his luxurious estate.

The family reportedly live in a more modest bungalow, rather than their £1.2 million mansion next door, after Faryal spent a cool £250,000 renovating it.

The quarter-of-a-million revamp seems money well spent as Amir’s doting wife turned the property into the perfect place for Khan to relax away from the strain of camp.

Amir has his very own “man cave”, whilst little Muhammad will be able to play in his lavish nursery room.

But the Khan’s and their new baby won’t be settling in the Bolton estate for long.

The couple are moving out of the boxing champ’s home town.

Their £1.2million mansion has been on the market since September 2018 but they have now sold up.

Faryal told her 883,000 followers last month: "Getting rid of some of my house furniture because I am moooooving soon!!"

How I overcame depression to qualify for Tokyo olympic games – Oshonaike

Nigeria women table tennis star, Funke Oshonaike has said suffered depression but had to stand strong in order to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In a Facebook live feed, Oshonaike expressed her joy by becoming the first African female athlete to compete in the Olympics on seven (7) occasions in table tennis, or in other sports, combined.

“I went through depression last year. I was crying almost every day. I was heartbroken by many people. I developed high blood pressure and now I have to live with it. I was operated on two times. My left arm was even injured.

“I couldn’t play table tennis for a long time after All African Games in Morocco. I had another surgery this year in January, I cried bitterly. My name was not on Africa Top 16 list, I was very sad because I was supposed to be there for the competition. I fought but lost,” she said.

She further thanked Sports minister, Sunday Dare, as well as some other Nigerians who came to her rescue in her time of depression.

“The same people that planned the removal of my name tried to remove me from Olympic qualification but God is greater. The Minister of Sports in Nigeria and some good people rescued me.

“I have been having sleepless nights because of these mischievous people. I have a lot to talk about but I leave it for another day.

“Tokyo 2020 here I come. 7 times Olympian. Don’t give up on your dreams,” she declared.

Oshonaike, who would be retiring after the 2020 Olympics, claimed a 4-1 victory over Algeria’s Lynda Loghraibi.

Real Madrid thrash Barcelona in El-clasico

Real Madrid have beaten fierce rival, Barcelona 2-0 in Sunday’s explosive El-Clasico at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium to go top of La Liga.

It was the second leg of the El-Clasico, the first leg having ended 0-0 at Nou Camp, Barcelona.

The game lived up to expectation, with both sides trying to score an early goal, but the first half ended goalless.

Madrid were the most adventurous side, losing several scoring chances to go ahead.

Brazilian young star, Vinicius Junior was Barcelona’s tormentor, with his runs and skills causing Barcelona much headache.

Then, the moment came on 71st minute as the Brazilian youngster broke the deadlock to make himself a hero.

Toni Kroos fed him down the left, he ghosts in behind Martin Braithwaite. The winger was in lots of space as he cut into the box, he powered his shot in, which was deflected by Gerard Pique and flied past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The young lad then celebrated his goal in Cristiano Ronaldo’s style.

Madrid mounted more pressure on Barcelona and super sub, Mariano, ended Barca’s hope of coming back with a superb strike on added time.

Mariano had been on the pitch a couple of seconds before he beat Samuel Umtiti for pace on the right wing. He slipped as he shot from a tight angle but his shot went through Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Jennifer Lopez speaks on the lowest time of her life -- reveals it's her divorce from Marc Anthony

Jennifer Lopez has opened up about her divorce from Marc Anthony.

“When we divorced it was the lowest time in my life. I felt I had failed miserably,” Jennifer admitted to Oprah Winfrey at “Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus” event in Los Angeles on Feb. 29.

“I had to re-examine my whole life…and regroup at that time,” she continued, noting that her priority was on the couple’s adorable twins Max and Emme Muñiz, now 12.

“I had waited to have kids [until I was] 38 and I had never wanted to not be with the person I had kids with and I felt that I was not going to give my kids what they needed and I just didn’t know what to do,” she added.

“I did therapy, I prayed -- a lot -- I learned to meditate,” she shared, revealing how she coped with going through the split.

“I read a lot of Louise Hay‘s books, I’ve met Louise Hay. Whatever I could. I was around the people in my life that were older and more experienced that could help me….the experience and the wisdom that they have is so priceless to me,” she added.

Jennifer, who was raised as a Roman Catholic by her Puerto Rican parents Guadalupe and David Lopez, also admitted that the split was tough due to how she was raised. “[It’s what I was] taught culturally: that you have to be together, and you can’t raise your kids without a man and a woman, a mother and a father,” she said.

“And I do think [kids] need their mother and their father. But your happiness has to be a part of that.”

While Marc and Jennifer were briefly linked in the late ’90s, even collaborating on her 1999 song “No Me Ames”, the duo didn’t reconnect romantically until the spring of 2004, fresh off her split from Ben Affleck.

The couple then welcomed their twins in Feb. 2008, but ultimately filed for divorce in April 2012.
After Marc, Jennifer dated Casper Smart, 32, before falling in love and becoming engaged to Alex Rodriguez, 44.

“I had to love myself and I had to be okay on my own before I could be in a healthy relationship,” she reflected. “You come to the realization that, I actually have to take care of myself so I can take care of everybody else better.”

Attend fresher’s night, risk expulsion, Al-hikmah university warns new students

An Ilorin, Kwara state based private tertiary institution, Al-hikmah University management has warned its new students not to attend any ‘unholy gathering’ during their stay in the institution.

Management specifically, cautioned “any student from attending a fresher’s night being put together by some useless elements,” it was gathered.

The university added that it was aware of a surreptitious move by some people to organize what it called fresher’s night, warning that “any student caught attending the party will be summarily expelled from the institution.”

This came as the institution matriculated no fewer than 905 students for the 2019/2020 academic session.

Addressing the new in-takes, Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Taofeek Ibrahim said that the institution had made giant stride in all fronts.

Prof Ibrahim revealed that Al-hikmah University came sixth of the 78 universities sampled by the National Universities Commission (NUC) Assessment of Students Support Service.

He added that the student population of the school had grown from 3,000 in 2015 to 5,000 with 18 departments and 169 academic programmes.

Prof Ibrahin admonished the students to be good ambassadors of the institution, families and country wherever they found themselves.

He counseled the students to shun all cultism and all forms of antisocial behaviour.

“I urge you all to make judicious use of your time. And wait for your time too. It is about what you make of yourselves now that will determine the service you will give to Nigeria tomorrow. I charge you all to remain humble. It is the most valued treasure you will need to succeed in life,” he said.

Oprah Winfrey falls flat on stage at event (video)

“Oprah Winfrey was walking around on the stage and talking, giving words of wisdom to the crowd,” an eyewitness dished to HollywoodLife exclusively about the television legend’s big fall while on stage at her WW Presents: Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus event at The Forum in Inglewood, California on Saturday, February 29.

“All of a sudden, she stumbled back, teetered on her heels and then fell right on to the ground, on her butt. Someone from backstage ran out front to help her on her feet. She said something like, ‘Wrong heels. I wore the wrong shoes. Please get me some new shoes.'”

The irony of the situation was that she talked to the crowd about introducing balance into their lives before she fell!

The source continued, “Spotting that her man Stedman Graham was running to stage (he sat in the VIP section near Gayle King and Meghan Markle’s mother Doria Ragland), Oprah said, ‘Look at my man coming to help me.'” He didn’t make it to the stage however, as the 66-year-old was already on her feet after taking such a fall.

Her adoring audience applauded her the minute she rebounded where Oprah didn’t take any chances after that as she then walked around barefoot while continuing on with the show.

It wasn’t all chaotic for Oprah at the latest stop on her tour as she gave her audience a chance to breathe and relax by performing a brief meditation session with social entrepreneur Jesse Israel. Fans posted videos from the event on their social media, with one writing about having “too much fun” while there.

Coronavirus prevention: Prices of ginger, garlic soar in Kaduna as misinformation spread

The search for prevention against coronavirus and the fear of contracting it has resulted in good business for herb sellers in Kaduna, as the prices of spices have gone up.

Ginger and garlic sellers are making huge sales, following rumours that they protect users against the epidemic.

Vanguard learned that an online letter, said to have come from China and had gone viral, indicated that a mixture of ginger, garlic and some herbs was excellent prevention and cure of COVID-19 when taken as a tea.

However, the World Health Organisation, WHO, has debunked the rumour of spices preventing coronavirus infection, but noted the health benefits of such spices.

A message on its site said: “Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus,” followed by the graphics below:

Meanwhile, Malam Hassan Rufai told Vanguard that his body had changed for good after taking the said spices’ tea-mixture, even as he enjoyed his nocturnal matrimonial duties more than before.

He said: “Ginger and garlic will soon be scarce in Kano market, especially the fresh ones. The traders are hiking the price because people are becoming aware of its importance in combating severe cold and body pain.”

On the veracity of coronavirus prevention, Rufai, a youth leader in Hayin Banki community, said all he knows is that natural lemon was also good in fighting severe cold, as he was talking from experience.

Real Madrid-Barcelona: El Clásico will decide who tops the table

One of the world’s most famous sporting rivalries takes centre stage once again on Sunday (night) as Real Madrid and Barcelona lock horns at the Santiago Bernabeu in the latest installment of the Clasico derby.

This high-profile meeting between fierce rivals carries extra significance given the current state of the LaLiga title race, with Quique Setien’s Barca holding a two-point advantage over Los Blancos, who were knocked off top spot last weekend courtesy of a shock defeat at Levante.

Another loss this weekend is likely to prove fatal to Real’s hopes of claiming a first domestic title since 2017.

Real Madrid remain without Eden Hazard, who suffered a hairline fracture in his right fibula during the loss at Levante.

Marco Asensio is yet to return from an anterior cruciate ligament tear, while Rodrygo is suspended after being sent off playing for Real Madrid Castilla.

Jordi Alba is back in first-team training for Barcelona and Gerard Pique could feature despite a sprained ankle sustained in the Champions League draw against Napoli.

The visitors are definitely without Sergi Roberto, Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said on Saturday his side are in a delicate situation as they prepare to host arch rivals Barcelona in a La Liga title showdown on Sunday amid a downward spiral of results which has left their season in limbo.

United States ban travels to Iran

President Donald Trump authorized the expansion of travel restrictions against Iran and the new recommendation that Americans refrain from visiting regions of Italy and South Korea impacted by the coronavirus.

Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday detailed the heightened travel warnings in a press conference from the White House.

“First, the president authorized action today to add additional travel restrictions on Iran. … Iran is already under a travel ban, but we’re are expanding existing travel restrictions to include any foreign national who has visited Iran within the last 14 days,” Pence said.

“We are going to increase, to the highest level advisory, which is Level 4 advising Americans: Do not travel to specific regions in Italy and South Korea,” he added. “We are urging Americans to not travel to the areas in Italy and the areas in South Korea that are most affected by the coronavirus.”

The president, meanwhile, said he will meet with some of the globe’s largest pharmaceutical companies on Monday on efforts to develop a vaccine for the novel illness. He and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar added that the administration’s early action to clamp down on travel has helped keep the virus’s risk to everyday Americans low.

Benue arrests 400 herdsmen, seizes 600 cows

The Benue State Government says it has arrested 400 herdsmen for flouting the state’s anti-open grazing law.

The state government also seized over 600 cows belonging to the herdsmen.

Governor Samuel Ortom, who revealed these in Makurdi on Friday, ordered the livestock guards to impound any cows seen openly grazing in any part of the state.

Ortom gave the instructions while inspecting impounded cows at the quarantine unit of the state Ministry of Agriculture.

He said enforcement of the ranching law would continue to enable those who wish to do livestock business to comply with its provisions.

He said, “There has been influx of armed herdsmen with large herds of animals to the state, despite the high level of awareness creation to the existence of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.

“Several herds of cattle have been impounded and quarantined in other local government areas and the state government has acquired trucks to help livestock guards to convey impounded livestock from long distances to quarantine units for safekeeping.”

While describing the influx of herdsmen to the state as “life-threatening”, the governor said such would not be condoned by his administration.

Ortom said, ‘‘As of today over 400 herdsmen found to have flouted the anti-open grazing law have been arrested and facing prosecution, some have been convicted.”

According to Ortom, ranching remains the global best practices of animals husbandry, urging Nigerians to key into it to ensure peace between herdsmen and farmers.

The Commander, Livestock Guards, Linus Zaki, said they impounded 214 cattle in Ukum, 69 in Logo, 219 in Guma, 96 in Makurdi and 16 in Gwer West councils.
