Man sentenced to death for coronavirus checkpoint killing

A Chinese court has sentenced a man to death for fatally stabbing two officials at a checkpoint set up to control the spread of the new coronavirus outbreak.

The virus has infected more than 80,000 people and killed nearly 3,000 in mainland China,  prompting a wide network of temperature checks, travel restrictions, residential checks and closures nationwide.

Many villages and communities have also implemented their own blockades and tough measures to keep people out, fearful that travellers could infect their communities.

On Sunday a court handed down a death sentence to a 23-year-old man after he stabbed two officials at one local village checkpoint.


The incident happened on February 6 when Ma Jianguo was driving a minivan through a checkpoint at Luo Meng village in Honghe, southwestern Yunnan province, where he was stopped.

After Ma refused to cooperate with officials, his passenger began trying to remove the roadblock, the court said, and the local official started filming Ma and the other man on his mobile phone.

A furious Ma stabbed the official -- a local poverty alleviation cadre -- in the chest and abdomen with a knife he carried with him and then attacked another official who came to the victim’s aid. The two men died from their wounds. The court statement said that although Ma had “voluntarily surrendered and truthfully confessed”, the killings were “extremely vicious”.

Husbands no longer have to make compulsory blood donations at Lagos public hospitals before their wives can be registered for Antenatal, court rules

This is such a good news! The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday struck down the policy that spouses of pregnant women seeking antenatal care in Lagos public hospitals must compulsorily make blood donation before their pregnant wives could be registered for antenatal care.

The court, in a judgment by Justice Raliat Adebiyi, declared the practice as “arbitrary, unfair and a violation of human rights as enshrined in Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution.”

Striking down the policy, which had been in existence for years, Justice Adebiyi described it as unconscionable, saying it was “adverse to the life and well-being of all citizens that access the respondent’s facilities.”


The judge’s pronouncement on Monday followed a fundamental human rights suit filed by an advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, which said it had been inundated with complaints by residents about the state hospital policy of compulsory blood donation by spouses of pregnant women seeking antenatal care.

SERAP had, in the suit, contended that the compulsory blood donation policy was contrary to Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right of Nigerians to life.

Agreeing with the group in her judgment on Monday, Justice Adebiyi held that the actions of the hospitals and facilities were violations of the rights of residents of Lagos to a system of health protection.

She said, “The respondents are hereby ordered to forthwith stop or discontinue the policy of insisting on compulsory blood donations from patients or relatives of those seeking medical care and attention before accessing antenatal, maternal or any health services in the facilities of the respondents.”

Joined as respondents in the suit were the Attorney General of Lagos State, Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State.

A woman faces jail in United Arab Emirates after she sent a strongly-worded email to a man who was said to be harassing her with s.e.xual images, a campaign group has said.

Melissa McBurnie, 57, was arrested in Abu Dhabi having been accused of slander, a US embassy spokesperson confirmed.

The Californian woman from Brentwood, who was a former personal assistant to actor Rob Lowe, messaged the man, 58, to tell him to stop sending her p.o.r.n.o.graphic images of himself as well as explicit texts to her, the campaign group Detained in Dubai.


Ms McBurnie is said to have “lashed out” in her message to the Egyptian national, who has previously shared images of her with others, the group claimed.

The woman was detained by the authorities after the man reported her email, Detained in Dubai has said.

'ABSOLUTELY SHAKEN'

Detained in Dubai chief executive Radha Stirling said: “Melissa has been going through one of the worst nightmares a person can suffer in the age of the internet for the past four years; she has been inundated with abusive messages of an extremely sexual nature.

“Yet, somehow she is the one facing prosecution in the UAE for cybercrime violations, simply because she used strong language against her abuser.”

According to Detained in Dubai, Ms McBurnie and the married man had been romantically involved but their relationship turned sour when Ms McBurnie put an end to the affair.

Ms McBurnie faces up to two years in prison for cybercrime if convicted.

She told the Daily Mail: "What I have been through has left me absolutely shaken. I have felt under constant threat the past years causing me unspeakable stress, and now I am facing criminal charges.

"I just hope the authorities can see what has been happening. I am the innocent part in all of this and they need to provide protection."

'UNSPEAKABLE STRESS'

The US embassy in the UAE told The Independent Ms McBurnie had been arrested for slander and later released on bail.

Ms McBurnie claims the man has slandered her and is using a series of explicit messages against her, the embassy spokesperson said.

The woman had been in the country since November on a tourist visa while the Egyptian man had been in the UAE for more than 20 years.

Detained in Dubai said they expected the woman to be held in Dubai until her case is heard in May.

In recent years a number of Brits have found themselves on the wrong side of the law in the UAE for what Westerners would see as innocuous reasons.

Abuja school’s PTA chairman jailed 14 years for forgery

 Mohammed Atabo, the chairman of Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of a private school in Abuja, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for forgery.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Atabo, 45, who is the PTA chairman of Esteem International School, Garki, Abuja with forging the signature of Mariya Sirajo, treasurer of the association.

The anti-graft agency in a 15-count charge filed in 2016 told the FCT High Court in Maitama that the convict forged the signature of Sirajo several times in 2014 on a First Bank local fund transfer with form No. 0790487.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Yusuf Halilu, held that the prosecution led credible evidence which has been proved beyond reasonable doubt.



He also held that the court relied on Exhibit T2, which was the confessional statement of the convict to the EFCC where he clearly admitted forging the signature of Sirajo.

He further considered exhibit C, which was the payment plan voluntarily written by the convict to the proprietor of Esteem International School, Garki.

The judge thereafter sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment for count one and 14 years each for count two to 15.

He held that the sentences should run concurrently and that the convict should serve his terms in Suleja custodial centre in Niger State.

56-year-old man remanded over defilement of 3-yr-old girl

An Upper Sharia Court at Tsafe in Zamfara State has ordered the remand of one Bala Haruna, alias Oranji-gada, 56, in Correctional custody, for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl.

The accused was dragged to the court by the office of the Attorney General of the state, after the case was initially reported by the girl’s mother at the Tsafe Divisional Police Station.

The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Babangida Shehu told the court that the offence contravened Section 131 of Zamfara Sharia law.



He said that the prosecution was ready to present evidence against the accused on the next adjourned date.

The Judge, Yusuf Ruwan-dorawa adjoined the case to March 16, for further hearing.

Coronavirus: FG searching for passengers on aircraft with Italian patient

The federal government is trying to trace most of the 155 passengers in the aircraft that brought to Nigeria the Italian confirmed with coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire made the disclosure yesterday while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

He said 156 passengers were on the manifest of the flight that brought the Italian.

Daily Trust reports that unlike what obtains in other countries, the name and other details of the Italian patient have not been made public yet.

The minister said some of the passengers on board the aircraft that brought the Italian were yet to be traced because of the ambiguity of the contact information they provided.



He said: “We cannot give a fixed figure on the contact tracing because it is a continuing process.”

“But the only one we know for sure is the 156 passengers who were on the aircraft with him (the Italian) and those ones are being tracked and we have been talking to them and we are getting cooperation.

“There have been a few challenges. Some people gave telephone numbers that didn’t work or (when called) said switched off. There are some who probably don’t have telephones or some who are new arrivals in Nigeria.

“They are not yet registered with any telephone company, but there are ways in which they can be found out. Some have probably left the country if they were to be here for a day or two,” he said.

Ehanire said that since the confirmation of the first case of the disease, the government had been focusing on containment including contact tracing to check further spread.

He said that as of yesterday, there was no new confirmed case recorded in Nigeria. “About 14 tests have been done and except that confirmed case, no other person has been confirmed with the disease,” he said.

The minister said currently, the contacts of the index case traced were 19 in Lagos and 39 in Ogun State.

He said that workers in the hotel where the index case stayed had been interviewed and isolated and that the taxi driver who drove the suspect had been identified and was under supervision.

The minister added that the airline that brought the victim had been advised to also put their crew under observation. “The room he (the Italian) stayed in has been decontaminated, fumigated (and) even the taxi he used has also been treated,” he said.

CAF General Secretary resigns

Confederation of African Football General Secretary Mouad Hajjion Monday tendered his resignation letter to CAF President Ahmad Ahmad, ho has accepted his resignation.

At the request of the CAF President, the Emergency Committee will meet to appoint an Acting General Secretary.

Citing personal reasons and indicating the need to return to Morocco as soon as possible, Hajji appealed for notice of his departure to be shortened, a request which the President has acceded to.

According to the statutes of the organisation, resignations and appointments must be submitted to the Executive Committee. Thus, the CAF President has announced that a meeting of the Emergency Committee will be convened as soon as possible to appoint an interim General Secretary.



CAF President Ahmad has expressed his gratitude to Hajji, for his invaluable work in driving the reforms of the organisation and African football since his appointment. He also commended his commitment, loyalty and above all passion for African football, and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

“I would like to warmly thank President Ahmad Ahmad for giving me the opportunity to serve the football on the continent at such a level of responsibility. The numerous reforms initiated in the areas of sporting and administrative since 2017 continues to remain a project which I believe in, and which I still support. I have no doubt that the President will continue to work for the good and development of our most beautiful sport,” Hajji said.

Nigerian woman Oluchi arrested in India for serial fraud

A 38-year-old Nigerian woman, identified as Nawakoo Oluchi Chivoma has been arrested in India for allegedly duping a 21-year-old man from south Mumbai.

According to Indian Express newspaper, Oluchi reportedly posed as an executive of an international pharmaceutical firm.

According the police, they have so far identified over eight cases in which the accused is allegedly involved.

Police said the accused has been identified as Nawakoo Oluchi Chivoma, who would allegedly offer victims business deals for the procurement of herbal products and later swindle them.



The victim, Prakash Devasi, said in his complaint that Chivoma had messaged his father on November 6, 2019. She went by the name Mark Nana, and claimed an international company was looking for an exporter of a herbal product in India.

“The complainant was asked to buy the raw material from particular companies in Assam and Rajasthan. These companies were conduits of the accused and were part of the fraud,” said a police officer.

Chivoma then sent a representative to test the products that the complainant had purchased, promising to buy it at a higher price if the material passed “quality tests”.

“Devasi bought two litres of the product from a company at Rs 5 lakh. Later, an executive visited their office and said the quality tests were positive, offering to buy the product at double the previous rate. However, he said the company would need double the amount of the herbal product,” said the officer.

Later, the complainant approached another company in Rajasthan, which he was informed of by the accused, and made an advance payment of Rs 5.8 lakh for 10 litres of the product. However, he then encountered another victim who was duped using a similar modus operandi and approached VP Road police station to lodge a complaint. The police registered a case under the relevant sections of cheating and began searching for the suspects using call data records.

“As the number was switched off, we located her with the help of a courier service that had delivered the herbal products at the complainant’s address,” said the officer. Police nabbed Chivoma in Navi Mumbai when she met with a representative of the courier company to receive the herbal products. The accused was arrested on March 27 and produced in court the next day, following which she was remanded to police custody till March 3.

NDLEA nabs three suspects for brewing skuchies

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested three suspects in Kwara for alleged brewing of skuchies.

The suspects are Opeyemi Ibrahim, Abdullahi Lukman and Mubarak Rejuavo.

This is contained in a statement signed by Ekerette Ukpong, Public Relation Officer of the command in Ilorin on Monday.

It stated that the suspects were intercepted during a raid at an illicit drug joint when people had gathered to consume it.


“A total of 195 litres (232kg) of skuchies were recovered.

“The joint allegedly belongs to one Ibrahim Olawale, also known as Lessy, who is now at large.

“While his Manager, Opeyemi Ibrahim, and his two sales boys, Abdullahi Abiola Lukman and Mubarak Rejuavo, were apprehended.

“The joint, popularly called Succouth Valley Garden, specialises in the production and sale of skuchies.

“Skuchies is a cocktail of drugs – a combination of Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol tablets of 232kgms category, cough syrup with Codeine, Swifnol, Sobo, etc.

“The combination of these drugs is now cooked and prepared into jerrycans where it is measured and sold to their customers.

“One litre of illicit concoction goes for N2,500 and it is patronised by the low and mighty in the society, especially students.

“The joint has turned many youths to junkies, as helpless ones see the place as home, also a den for criminals, who plan their criminal activities while taking illicit drugs,” the statement read in part.

It also stated that over 30 suspects were arrested at the joint during a coordinated raid and dislodgement operation, while the case is under investigation.

The State Commander, Mr Ambrose Umoru, warned operators of such illicit joints to close up, as the command would step up its operational tempo with the aim of sanitising the state from drug abuse.

He also urged youths to desist from consuming poisonous concoction that is harmful to human health.

Police nab suspected trafficker with 23 children in Taraba

The police have arrested a suspected child trafficker, Mary Yakubu, with 23 children in Taraba State.

The children, who are between the ages of four and seven, comprise 14 boys and nine girls.

Mary was paraded along with other suspects on Monday at the State Police Command headquarters in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

The Police Public Relations Officer, David Misal, told reporters that the suspect was intercepted with the kids at a park in Bali Local Government Area of the state while they were about to board a vehicle.

He revealed that the 23 children have been handed over to the Ministry of Social Welfare in the state.


Misal added that seven parents of some of the children have been arrested in connection with the crime while investigation was ongoing to apprehend others.

On her part, the suspect claimed that the children were given to her by their parents to help get those in need of children to care of them.

“The parents of the children told me to come get them for people who would help cater to their educational needs because, in their villages, there are no schools.

“This is actually the first time I am doing this, and I did not collect any money from their parents,” Mary claimed.

She added, “I am a mother of seven, a teacher at Adamu Primary School in Bali LGA. I am 45 years and was arrested at the car park in Bali when I was about leaving with the children.”

The Police Public Relations Officer also paraded seven members of a kidnap syndicate terrorising residents in parts of the state.

He disclosed that the suspects engaged the police in a gun duel following the kidnap of one Tashi Abba who was abducted from his residence.

In the course of fire exchange, according to Misal, the police killed a notorious kidnapper identified as Isa Passion and recovered one single barrel gun.

He also paraded eight suspected armed robbers and a syndicate of car snatchers said to have stolen 30 vehicles in Jalingo.

All the suspects confessing to committing the crimes they were accused of.

Coronavirus: Twitter tells staff to work from home

Twitter has told its employees to work from home to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. In a blog post, the social media giant said it was mandatory for staff in Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea to work remotely.

The company also said it was "strongly encouraging" all of its 5,000 employees around the world to not come into work.

It comes a day after the firm banned all non-essential business travel and events for its workers.

The company had already announced that it was pulling out of this month's South by Southwest media conference in Austin, Texas.


Twitter's head of human resources Jennifer Christie said: "Our goal is to lower the probability of the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus for us - and the world around us."


The post also highlighted that Twitter has been developing ways to work from home for some time: "While this is a big change for us, we have already been moving towards a more distributed workforce that's increasingly remote. We're a global service and we're committed to enabling anyone, anywhere to work at Twitter."

Twitter's chief executive Jack Dorsey has long-supported remote working and in November announced plans to live in Africa for up to six months of this year.

Everton manager charged with misconduct by the FA

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has been charged with misconduct by the FA after being sent off following the draw with Manchester United.

The Italian approached referee Chris Kavanagh at the final whistle after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's late goal was ruled out for offside.

Ancelotti will not get a touchline ban but will be fined £8,000 if he accepts the charge before Thursday's deadline.

That figure would rise to £12,000 if an appeal is made and is unsuccessful.


The 60-year-old said after the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park that he was not disrespectful to Kavanagh, whose initial decision to award the stoppage-time goal was reversed by the video assistant referee because Everton's Gylfi Sigurdsson was lying offside in front of United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Ancelotti said he also had a subsequent, private conversation in which he spoke to the referee "calmly".

Although the Toffees boss was the first manager in the Premier League to be shown a red card, the rule was only introduced this season by the International Football Association Board to improve the visibility of such actions. It was already possible for managers to be dismissed.

The FA also ran a trial period last season.

Piers Morgan has hit out at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over potentially leaving baby Archie alone to travel.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, had been debating whether it has been right that the public pay for their security after the couple stepped down as royals when he made the comments.

Joined by former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe and journalist Ateh Jewel, Piers and co-star Susanna Reid discussed Meghan and Harry's security bill.

Piers conceded that their security should potentially be paid for when they were working with charities and NGOs, he believed that if they were making commercial gains from events they should pay money back.


However Piers also brought up the point about Meghan and Harry leaving their son Archie in Canada to travel.

He said: "Susanna and Charlotte, on this issue of if Archie doesn't come on this trip - and we don't know for sure, maybe he will come - if he doesn't come... isn't it a bit odd?

"I mean, I've had four kids and the rule was always both parents wouldn't be out of the country at the same time when my kids were that young. I'm very surprised."

Susanna agreed, saying: "For my 40th we were supposed to go away without the children and I literally, physically couldn't get on the plane with my children's dad, who I was together with at the time, because I couldn't bear the thought that something might happen to us and we'd left the children at home."

Piers added: "I've always had a rule with all my kids that you can't be in a different country, both parents, away from a young child - I don't think. I'm surprised!"

Senegal, Saudi Arabia confirms first coronavirus case

Senegal on Monday confirmed its first case of the novel coronavirus, a French citizen who visited France last month before returning to the West African country and being quarantined in the capital Dakar.

“The results of the tests carried out by the Pasteur Institute in Dakar came back positive,” Senegal’s Health Minister Diouf Sarr told journalists.

“So far the patient’s condition has not raised any major concerns,” he added.


It is the second confirmed case in sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria, where an Italian national returned with the virus.


Italy has emerged as the European hotspot for the deadly virus with nearly 1,700 cases, while France has reported the third most in Europe, with at least 130.

Likewise, Saudi Arabia on Monday confirmed its first case of coronavirus after one its citizens who had returned from COVID-19 hotspot Iran tested positive.

The health ministry said the man, tested after entering the country through Bahrain, had been “isolated in a hospital”.

Saudi Arabia is the last Arab state in the Gulf to report a confirmed case of COVID-19. Elsewhere in the Arab world, Jordan and Tunisia also confirmed their first cases on Monday.

Last week, Riyadh barred citizens from its Gulf neighbours from visiting Mecca and Medina.

Libya conflict: 'Stressed' Ghassan Salame resigns as UN envoy

The UN's special envoy for Libya has resigned saying his efforts to bring peace in the North African country was damaging his health.

Ghassan Salame tweeted that "my health no longer allows this rate of stress".

Talks between the UN-backed government based in the capital, Tripoli, and fighters loyal to renegade Gen Khalifa Haftar have floundered.

Libya has been torn by conflict since the 2011 uprising which ousted long-time strongman Muammar Gaddafi.


Last week Mr Salame brought representatives of the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Haftar-led Libyan National Army (LNA), the two warring sides, to Geneva for peace talks, but the representatives suspended their involvement.


Mr Salame tweeted on Monday that he had "sought for two and a half years to unite Libyans, prevent foreign intervention, and preserve the unity of the country".

"My health no longer allows this rate of stress, and therefore I have asked the [UN] secretary general to relieve me of my duties," he added.

Pope coughs his way through speech amid coronavirus outbreak

Pope Francis has pulled out of a week-long spiritual retreat for the first time in his seven-year papacy because he has been struck down with an illness.

The 83-year-old pontiff spluttered and coughed his way through a speech addressing pilgrims on Sunday and had to pause twice to compose himself.

He told thousands who gathered for his weekly appearance from a window high above St Peter’s Square, in the Vatican City, that he would not be able to attend due to a cold.

Francis asked for prayers for the Lenten retreat, adding: ‘Unfortunately, a cold prevents me from participating this year… I will be following the meditation from here’.

The announcement comes as Italy battles the worst coronavirus outbreak in Europe, with dozens of towns in the north of the country being placed into quarantine.

R.a.p.i.s.t Weinstein watches TV as he relaxes on a leather chair in a NYC hospital

The first photos purported to be disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein inside Bellevue Hospital have emerged, showing the producer sitting with his head in his hands while watching TV.

The photographs, obtained by Pix11 show the 67-year-old fallen Hollywood giant for the first time since his r3pe conviction last week.

Weinstein was seen sitting alone hunched on a leather chair with his wheelchair visible next to him.

He was wearing a simple white T-shirt with what appears to be a hospital bracelet or cast on his wrist rubbing his head as he looked downcast.


The film titan was convicted last week of committing a criminal s.e.x act in the first degree and r3pe in the third degree in the assaults of Miriam Haley and Jessica Mann and was ordered to be held in jail.

Instead of going to the notorious Rikers Island prison, Weinstein was taken from the Manhattan courthouse to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue on February 24 for heart palpitations and high blood pressure, where he's remained since, according to his attorneys.

At Bellevue, Weinstein is reportedly allowed to roam around at his own free will.

'He is free to roam and is not handcuffed. He is being treated like any other person,' a source said.

'He is waking with the aide of a wheelchair. He is holding on to its handles to go to the TV room, using it as a walker, where he spent about an hour and then walked himself back,' the source added.

The source says that it's very clear 'Harvey does not want to go to Rikers.'

However, it's not clear exactly what condition Weinstein has nor when he will be moved to Rikers.

Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala visited the movie mogul in the hospital on Friday. A spokesman for the convicted rapist said he is 'mentally down'.

Aidala was spotted buying snacks for his client on the same day that doctors ordered a CAT scan for Weinstein.

Weinstein is spending his time in the hospital reading books about Winston Churchill and speaking with his two young children and ex-wife Georgina Chapman, the source said.

However, Weinstein has not had visits from any of his five children.

He is due to be sentenced on March 11 and he faces up to 29 years in prison.

A shocking TikTok video shows a California woman undergoing her 'second abortion'.

The since-deleted video, titled 'Abortion time, take 2,' shows the young woman getting dressed in front of a mirror while her friend holds up a positive pregnancy test.

The video's caption suggests that this is also her second abortion. A remix of Bruno Mars' 'It Will Rain' plays in the background.

She appears to be wiping something from her eye, suggesting that she may have been crying after learning the news of her pregnancy.

'How do you feel Ashley,' the girl's friend can be heard asking as the woman looks in the mirror.

The clip jumps to show the young woman poking her stomach out before it jumps again to show the front of a Planned Parenthood in Pasadena, California.

Inside the clinic, a couple sits solemnly in a corner of the facility. Ashley and her camera person caption the segment: 'There's two abortion moods.'

The camera pans to show Ashley doing the shoot dance.

The clip comes to an end showing Ashley sitting on a hospital bed and getting an ultrasound.

Lila Rose, president of the pro-life group Live Action, posted the video to Twitter before it was removed for violating the platform's rules.

'Twitter just locked my account until I removed the TikTok video of the girl joking & filming her abortion at @PPFA,' she said in a follow up tweet.

US confirms second death from coronavirus

A second person in the U.S. has died from coronavirus at the same Seattle area hospital where the first person died, officials said.

The announcement came as the first coronavirus patient was confirmed in New York.

Health officials in Washington state said Sunday night that a man in his 70s had died and he had previously been a resident at a nursing facility near Seattle where dozens of people were sick and had been tested for the virus.

The man reportedly had underlying health conditions, and died at the EvergreenHealth hospital in Kirkland, the same hospital where the country's first coronavirus-related death was reported yesterday.


Officials also confirmed three other patients at the hospital, a woman in her 80s, a woman in her 90s and a man in his 70s are all in a critical condition.
