Kobe Bryant's fatal crash pictures taken and shared by eight Sheriff's deputies

Horrifying pictures of Kobe Bryant 's fatal helicopter crash were taken and shared by eight Sherrif's deputies, it has been claimed.

The NBA legend and his daughter Gigi, 13, were killed alongside seven others when Kobe's helicopter went down over Calabasas, in Los Angeles.

Now, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has said he's shocked after learning that eight of his deputies took photographs of the crash site and shared them with others.

TMZ reports that the Sheriff made the revelation on Monday, calling the scandal a "punch to the gut".

He said that the images taken at the scene of the tragic crash have now been erased and that the deputies involved are facing disciplinary action and investigation.

The Sheriff said he felt there had been a "sense of betrayal" towards the families of those lost in the crash.

He added that the only people authorised to take pictures at the scene were the coroner and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators.

Kobe's widow Vanessa was left devastated when she found out that deputies had taken pictures of the crash, potentially including images of the remains of her beloved husband and daughter.

And it's said that she wants those responsible to be punished.

It had been reported that the deputies who took pictures at the tragic scene sent them on to numerous people outside of the Sheriff's Department.

One deputy trainee is also said to have shown photographs of the remains to a woman in a bar, but when the bartender overheard, he made an online complaint to the department.

Sheriff Vallanueva said it's not a crime for law enforcement officials to take photographs at the scene of an incident, but that it is against department policy. He issued an apology to the family.

Basketball legend Kobe, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter were among nine killed in the tragic helicopter crash.

Senegal confirms second coronavirus case

A second person in Senegal has tested positive for coronavirus, the country's health ministry confirms.

It says the patient is an 80-year-old French national who arrived in the West African country on 29 February.

He is being treated at the same hospital for infectious diseases in the capital city, Dakar, as another Frenchman who was hospitalised for coronavirus last week.

News of this second confirmed case in Senegal brings the total number of confirmed cases on the African continent to 12.

Other countries with patients who tested positive for the virus are:
    Algeria - five people
    Egypt - two people
    Morocco - one person
    Nigeria - one person
    Tunisia - one person

Senegal is one of the 33 sub-Saharan African nations with testing facilities for coronavirus. The authorities say they are well prepared to deal with the virus.

On Monday the World Health Organization told the BBC it expects the remaining 12 sub-Saharan nations currently without testing equipment to gain facilities within a fortnight.

South Africa knocked by second recession in two years

South Africa has fallen into its second recession in two years as severe rolling power blackouts frustrate President Cyril Ramaphosa’s attempt to revive growth.

The economy contracted 1.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to official statistics released on Tuesday, far outpacing analyst forecasts of a 0.2 per cent decline.

The contraction came after a 0.8 per cent drop in economic output during the previous quarter, leading to South Africa’s second recession — defined as two quarters of negative growth — since 2018.

The slowdown was felt across the economy with most sectors recording falls in output, said South Africa’s official statistics agency.

South Africa’s rapid return to recession will pile pressure on Mr Ramaphosa, whose pledge of a “new dawn” for the corruption-battered economy has flagged since he became president two years ago.

Chelsea dump Liverpool out of FA Cup

Ross Barkley said it was "a dream" to score against Liverpool as the midfielder helped Chelsea reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

The result meant Liverpool suffered their second successive defeat of this stellar season in a highly-competitive encounter at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool made seven changes to the side that lost surprisingly at Watford on Saturday - the first reverse of their league campaign after 18 successive victories left them on the brink of a first title for 30 years.

Chelsea, however, still had to overcome a Liverpool team containing the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez in a hard-fought fifth-round tie.

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian gifted Willian Chelsea's opener after 13 minutes when he hopelessly fumbled his 20-yard shot, but the European champions had chances of their own only to see recalled keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga present a formidable barrier with a string of saves.

The game was effectively settled after 64 minutes when former Everton midfielder and Toffees fan Barkley surged from inside his own half on a solo run before beating Adrian with an emphatic strike.

"It was brilliant, a massive result for the lads," Barkley told BBC One. "We needed a top performance tonight at home after two disappointing results.

"Scoring against Liverpool is massive for me. As an Everton fan, it's always a dream to score against them."

Ronaldo flies to Madeira as mum rushed to hospital after suffering stroke

Cristiano Ronaldo’s mum has been rushed to hospital after suffering a stroke. The Juventus superstar has flown to the island of Madeira to be with his mother, after she was admitted to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital just after 5am on Tuesday morning.

Local media say she is “conscious and stable.” She is due to undergo new tests in the next few hours to determine her state of health.

At the start of last year Dolores revealed she was “fighting for her life” after a new cancer drama.

She beat breast cancer after being diagnosed with the disease in 2007.

But in February last year ahead of a trip to Italy to celebrate her footballer son’s 35th birthday she admitted to new health problems.

She told a Portuguese TV station in a interview: "I was operated on another breast in Madrid, I’ve had radiotherapy and now I’m fighting for my life."

One local report says she has suffered an ischemic stroke, caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain - the most common type of stroke.

Cristiano’s old side Sporting Clube de Portugal have also wished Dolores a speedy recovery.

The 65-year-old mum-of-four is the ambassador of the Lisbon-based club’s foundation.

The club said in a statement: “Sporting Clube de Portugal wishes Dolores Aveiro all the best and wishes she makes a speedy recovery.”

Man gets 12-hour erection after smoking marijuana

A 32-year-old man who was recently treated at the hospital for several longer-than-normal erections, including one that lasted 12 hours, likely had the condition due to frequent use of marijuana, researchers say.

A team of doctors at Coliseum Medical Centers in Macon, Georgia, says it is the ‘first known case of cannabis-associated priapism in a patient where all other known causes of priapism have been excluded.’

Priapism is a long-lasting, painful erection that usually lasts more than four hours and is unrelated to sexual activity.

If untreated, priapism, which is often caused by use of prescription medication like anti-depressants or illicit drug use such as cocaine, can cause permanent damage to the p3nis.

This is the first time that researchers have recorded an instance in which priapism was believed to have been caused by consistent use of cannabis.

Experts wrote about the unusual case of the 32-year-old healthy African American man who was admitted to the hospital after complaining about persistent erections.

According to the Journal of Cannabis Research, he went to the hospital’s emergency room complaining of an erection that lasted for 12 hours and was unrelated to sexual activity.

During the hospital visits, he was given an injection of phenylephrine, which helped the erection subside.

The patient told doctors that he smoked cannabis ‘several nights per week for the past six months’ - including ‘within the two hours period prior to each presenting episode of priapism.’

During the six-month period, the patient reported that he had at least four instances of erections lasting close to four hours. The erections eventually passed on their own.

'The Wheelers are being totally dignified and focusing on the funeral and will not talk about Boris in public at all.'

It was not yet known whether the Prime Minister will be invited to attend the funeral on Friday.

'Sick' Pope Francis tests negative to coronavirus

Pope Francis, who canceled a Lent retreat for the first time in his papacy because he is suffering from a cold, has tested negative for coronavirus, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported this morning.

The 83-year-old Roman Catholic leader, who had part of one lung removed because of an illness decades ago, also canceled most audiences last week.

Francis was to have taken part in the week-long retreat with senior Vatican officials that began on Sunday night at a Church residence south of Rome.

But in a surprise announcement hours earlier, he said he would be following it from his residence in a Vatican guest house.

He has been taken ill at a time when Italy is battling a surging outbreak of the potentially deadly coronavirus.

The death toll in Italy jumped to 52 on Monday from 34 the day before and the total number of confirmed cases in Europe's worst affected country climbed past the 2,000 mark.

Number of people dead from coronavirus in U.S rises to SIX

The coronavirus death toll in the U.S. has now climbed to six as President Donald Trump called for drugmakers to speed up the development of a vaccine despite the top infectious disease official in the country warning it won't be ready for at least a year.

Health officials in Washington state announced on Monday that four people had died in the Seattle area in addition to the two other patients in that same area who died over the weekend.

Five of the six deaths have been linked to the LifeCare long-term aged care facility in Kirkland in King County. The sixth victim was from nearby Snohomish county. Officials say at least four of the six people who have died were elderly and/or had underlying health conditions.

News of the additional deaths came after Dr Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NBC News on Monday that the disease had likely reached 'pandemic proportions' as 100 cases were confirmed across the U.S.

Man sentenced to death for coronavirus checkpoint killing

A Chinese court has sentenced a man to death for fatally stabbing two officials at a checkpoint set up to control the spread of the new coronavirus outbreak.

The virus has infected more than 80,000 people and killed nearly 3,000 in mainland China,  prompting a wide network of temperature checks, travel restrictions, residential checks and closures nationwide.

Many villages and communities have also implemented their own blockades and tough measures to keep people out, fearful that travellers could infect their communities.

On Sunday a court handed down a death sentence to a 23-year-old man after he stabbed two officials at one local village checkpoint.

The incident happened on February 6 when Ma Jianguo was driving a minivan through a checkpoint at Luo Meng village in Honghe, southwestern Yunnan province, where he was stopped.

After Ma refused to cooperate with officials, his passenger began trying to remove the roadblock, the court said, and the local official started filming Ma and the other man on his mobile phone.

A furious Ma stabbed the official -- a local poverty alleviation cadre -- in the chest and abdomen with a knife he carried with him and then attacked another official who came to the victim’s aid. The two men died from their wounds. The court statement said that although Ma had “voluntarily surrendered and truthfully confessed”, the killings were “extremely vicious”.

Husbands no longer have to make compulsory blood donations at Lagos public hospitals before their wives can be registered for Antenatal, court rules

This is such a good news! The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday struck down the policy that spouses of pregnant women seeking antenatal care in Lagos public hospitals must compulsorily make blood donation before their pregnant wives could be registered for antenatal care.

The court, in a judgment by Justice Raliat Adebiyi, declared the practice as “arbitrary, unfair and a violation of human rights as enshrined in Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution.”

Striking down the policy, which had been in existence for years, Justice Adebiyi described it as unconscionable, saying it was “adverse to the life and well-being of all citizens that access the respondent’s facilities.”

The judge’s pronouncement on Monday followed a fundamental human rights suit filed by an advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, which said it had been inundated with complaints by residents about the state hospital policy of compulsory blood donation by spouses of pregnant women seeking antenatal care.

SERAP had, in the suit, contended that the compulsory blood donation policy was contrary to Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right of Nigerians to life.

Agreeing with the group in her judgment on Monday, Justice Adebiyi held that the actions of the hospitals and facilities were violations of the rights of residents of Lagos to a system of health protection.

She said, “The respondents are hereby ordered to forthwith stop or discontinue the policy of insisting on compulsory blood donations from patients or relatives of those seeking medical care and attention before accessing antenatal, maternal or any health services in the facilities of the respondents.”

Joined as respondents in the suit were the Attorney General of Lagos State, Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State.

Photo: Woman held in UAE for swearing in Email

A woman faces jail in United Arab Emirates after she sent a strongly-worded email to a man who was said to be harassing her with s.e.xual images, a campaign group has said.

Melissa McBurnie, 57, was arrested in Abu Dhabi having been accused of slander, a US embassy spokesperson confirmed.

The Californian woman from Brentwood, who was a former personal assistant to actor Rob Lowe, messaged the man, 58, to tell him to stop sending her p.o.r.n.o.graphic images of himself as well as explicit texts to her, the campaign group Detained in Dubai.

Ms McBurnie is said to have “lashed out” in her message to the Egyptian national, who has previously shared images of her with others, the group claimed.

The woman was detained by the authorities after the man reported her email, Detained in Dubai has said.

'ABSOLUTELY SHAKEN'

Detained in Dubai chief executive Radha Stirling said: “Melissa has been going through one of the worst nightmares a person can suffer in the age of the internet for the past four years; she has been inundated with abusive messages of an extremely sexual nature.

“Yet, somehow she is the one facing prosecution in the UAE for cybercrime violations, simply because she used strong language against her abuser.”

According to Detained in Dubai, Ms McBurnie and the married man had been romantically involved but their relationship turned sour when Ms McBurnie put an end to the affair.

Ms McBurnie faces up to two years in prison for cybercrime if convicted.

She told the Daily Mail: "What I have been through has left me absolutely shaken. I have felt under constant threat the past years causing me unspeakable stress, and now I am facing criminal charges.

"I just hope the authorities can see what has been happening. I am the innocent part in all of this and they need to provide protection."

'UNSPEAKABLE STRESS'

The US embassy in the UAE told The Independent Ms McBurnie had been arrested for slander and later released on bail.

Ms McBurnie claims the man has slandered her and is using a series of explicit messages against her, the embassy spokesperson said.

The woman had been in the country since November on a tourist visa while the Egyptian man had been in the UAE for more than 20 years.

Detained in Dubai said they expected the woman to be held in Dubai until her case is heard in May.

In recent years a number of Brits have found themselves on the wrong side of the law in the UAE for what Westerners would see as innocuous reasons.

Tourist Jamie Harron hit headlines after he was arrested for touching a man's hip in a Dubai bar.

Abuja school’s PTA chairman jailed 14 years for forgery

Mohammed Atabo, the chairman of Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of a private school in Abuja, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for forgery.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Atabo, 45, who is the PTA chairman of Esteem International School, Garki, Abuja with forging the signature of Mariya Sirajo, treasurer of the association.

The anti-graft agency in a 15-count charge filed in 2016 told the FCT High Court in Maitama that the convict forged the signature of Sirajo several times in 2014 on a First Bank local fund transfer with form No. 0790487.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Yusuf Halilu, held that the prosecution led credible evidence which has been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

He also held that the court relied on Exhibit T2, which was the confessional statement of the convict to the EFCC where he clearly admitted forging the signature of Sirajo.

He further considered exhibit C, which was the payment plan voluntarily written by the convict to the proprietor of Esteem International School, Garki.

The judge thereafter sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment for count one and 14 years each for count two to 15.

He held that the sentences should run concurrently and that the convict should serve his terms in Suleja custodial centre in Niger State.

Coronavirus: FG searching for passengers on aircraft with Italian patient

The federal government is trying to trace most of the 155 passengers in the aircraft that brought to Nigeria the Italian confirmed with coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire made the disclosure yesterday while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

He said 156 passengers were on the manifest of the flight that brought the Italian.

Daily Trust reports that unlike what obtains in other countries, the name and other details of the Italian patient have not been made public yet.

The minister said some of the passengers on board the aircraft that brought the Italian were yet to be traced because of the ambiguity of the contact information they provided.

He said: “We cannot give a fixed figure on the contact tracing because it is a continuing process.”

“But the only one we know for sure is the 156 passengers who were on the aircraft with him (the Italian) and those ones are being tracked and we have been talking to them and we are getting cooperation.

“There have been a few challenges. Some people gave telephone numbers that didn’t work or (when called) said switched off. There are some who probably don’t have telephones or some who are new arrivals in Nigeria.

“They are not yet registered with any telephone company, but there are ways in which they can be found out. Some have probably left the country if they were to be here for a day or two,” he said.

Ehanire said that since the confirmation of the first case of the disease, the government had been focusing on containment including contact tracing to check further spread.

He said that as of yesterday, there was no new confirmed case recorded in Nigeria. “About 14 tests have been done and except that confirmed case, no other person has been confirmed with the disease,” he said.

The minister said currently, the contacts of the index case traced were 19 in Lagos and 39 in Ogun State.

He said that workers in the hotel where the index case stayed had been interviewed and isolated and that the taxi driver who drove the suspect had been identified and was under supervision.

The minister added that the airline that brought the victim had been advised to also put their crew under observation. “The room he (the Italian) stayed in has been decontaminated, fumigated (and) even the taxi he used has also been treated,” he said.
