Kaduna to pay N30,000 minimum pension in March

The Kaduna State Government says it will begin the payment of N30,000 new minimum pension to its retirees on the old Defined Benefits Pension scheme this month.

This was contained in a statement issued by Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to Governor Nasir El-Rufai in Kaduna.

The statement stated that the new wage would upgrade 11,511 pensioners, who were previously earning less than N30,000 monthly pension.

He said that all the government agencies had received the circular from the Office of the Head of Service to effect the new pension structure.

“Following the decision of the Kaduna State Executive Council to increase the minimum pension to N30,000 monthly, the Head of Service, Bariatu Mohammed, has issued the necessary circular to government agencies to implement from March 2020,’’ he said.

According to the governor’s aide, the circular directs ‘’the agencies to comply and implement the directive of the State Executive Council (EXCO), which recently reviewed upward the minimum pension in the state.’’

Iran warns Trump over dangerous actions after Iraq strikes

Iran on Friday warned US President Donald Trump against taking “dangerous actions” after American forces launched airstrikes that they said targeted a pro-Iranian armed group in neighbouring Iraq.

Iraq military says on Friday that US strikes kill five troops and one civilian.

“The United States cannot blame others… for the consequences of its illegal presence in Iraq and the nation’s reaction to the assassination and killing of Iraqi commanders and fighters,” foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said.

“Instead of dangerous actions and baseless accusations, Mr Trump should reconsider the presence and behaviour of his troops in the area,” he added.

The statement was issued hours after the Pentagon said the US had launched strikes against the Kataeb Hezbollah armed faction.

The United States said the strikes targeted five weapons facilities across Iraq.

It said they were carried out in response to the killing on Wednesday of two Americans and a Briton in a rocket attack on Taji airbase.

Wednesday’s attack was the 22nd on US installations in Iraq, including the American embassy, since late October.

CAS postpones Siasia’s FIFA ban hearing over deadly virus

Court of Arbitration for Sports, CAS, has postponed the hearing of former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia’s appeal until further notice.

Hearing was scheduled for March 19 but due to the Coronavirus outbreak, it has been postponed.

CAS wrote Siasia on December 27, 2019, inviting him and FIFA representatives and their witnesses to appear at the hearing which will hold at 9.30 hours Swiss time.

The Arbitral panel is called upon to resolve the dispute between Samson Siasia and FIFA.

Siasia won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria and played in their maiden World Cup appearance later that same year. He played over 50 times for the Super Eagles while scoring 16 goals.

As a coach he led his country’s under-20 and under-23 sides to continental success in 2005 and 2015 respectively.

He also guided the under-20’s to a runners-up finish at the 2005 World Youth Championships (as it was known at the time) in the Netherlands.

Siasia is the most decorated African football coach at the Olympics, winning silver at the Beijing Games in 2008 and bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio.

Ghana and Gabon confirm their first coronavirus cases

Gabon and Ghana confirmed their first cases of coronavirus on Thursday, becoming the ninth and tenth countries in sub-Saharan Africa to register positive cases.

The region has so far been less badly hit by coronavirus than Europe or China. Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Togo, South Africa, Burkina Faso and Democratic Republic of Congo have also registered cases.

In a statement, Gabon's government said its case was a 27-year-old Gabonese man who had returned from France on March 8.

Ghana's health ministry said its two cases were people who had returned recently from Norway and Turkey.

"These are imported cases of COVID-19. Both patients are currently being kept in isolation and are stable," the ministry said in a statement.

Dramatic moment Buhari’s security was breached in Kebbi

There was a moment of panic in Kebbi yesterday as President Muhammadu Buhari’s security was breached by a young man who moved briskly and menacingly towards him while taking photograph with host Governor Atiku Bagudu and Jigawa governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.

How the security men missed the intruder was unclear as he leapt out of the crowd watching the photo session. Did he want his own photo-op with the president?

He was inches away when there was a panicky effort to safe the president from the intruder.

In a statement Thursday night, Presidential adviser, Femi Adesina said it was not an attempted attack by the man, against the president. He explained what happened:

“President Muhammadu Buhari was in Kebbi State Thursday to declare open the Argungu Fishing and Cultural Festival. It was the first time the international tourism event would hold in eleven years, as security considerations had rendered it impracticable.

“As the President went round the arena to inspect rice pyramids on display, and take photographs with farmers, a young man was so very excited to see his President so close. He made an attempt to get to him.

“World over, such would not be allowed by security details. The young man was prevented, and he protested that he should be allowed to greet his President. Now, professional contortionists are making mischief of the event. They are passing the video clip off on social media as an attempt to attack the President.

“Malicious people always twist things to give a negative narrative. But they simply dash their heads against the wall. The country moves on”.

Arsenal expects a "significant number of people" will self-isolate, including the "full first-team squad".

Kim Jong Un 'flees North Korean capital to escape coronavirus'

Kim Jong Un has fled the North Korean capital for the coast in a bid to escape coronavirus, an insider has claimed.

A source in South Korea said the Supreme Leader fled Pyongyang for Wonsan on the nation's east coast amid growing fears over the virus.

'Intelligence analysis suggests that Kim Jong-un has been away from Pyongyang for a considerable time,' the source told Chosun Ilbo. 'This appears to be connected with the coronavirus outbreak.'

It comes amid reports that roughly 180 soldiers have died after contracting COVID-19 in the secretive state.

A source in the North's military leaked the apparent death toll to South Korea's Daily NK newspaper and claimed most of the deaths had occurred close to the border with China.

A further 3,700 soldiers were under quarantine after testing positive for the virus, it was added.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Charles Esimone, announced the deferment of the award during the 14th convocation ceremonies of the University.

“The Senate of the University duly approved the award to former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi.”

Some Ekiti monarchs might also be disposed soon (details)

Palpable fear gripped Ekiti State on Thursday as strong indications emerged Governor Kayode Fayemi was allegedly making moves to dethrone the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe and 10 other aggrieved prominent traditional rulers in the state otherwise called ‘pelupelu Obas’.

The affected Obas include Ewi of Ado-Ekiti Oba Rufus Adejugbe; Oloye of Oye Oba Oluwole Ademolaju; Elekole of Ikole Oba Adewumi Fasiku; Elemure of Emure Oba Emmanuel Ogunleye; Ajero of Ijero Oba Joseph Adewole; Alara of Aramoko, Oba Adegoke Adeyemi.

Others are: Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti Oba Samuel Adejimi; Olomuo of Omuo Oba Noah Omonigbehin; Alaaye of Efon Oba Emmanuel Aladejare; Ologotun of Oguntun Oba Samuel Oyebade and Olujudo of Ido-Faboro, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro.

The monarchs, according to a reliable source in the Government House, Ado-Ekiti, might be dethroned for their absence at Government functions and Obas Council’s statutory meetings.

There has been an intractable crisis between Fayemi and the most prominent traditional rulers over the rejection of Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, as the new chairman of Ekiti traditional Council.

The prominent monarchs had on August 9 instituted litigation with registration number HAD/76/2019 before an Ado-Ekiti High Court, challenging the appointment of Oba Alabi by Governor Fayemi.

In a writ of summons file, the 17 Obas urged the court to reverse Fayemi’s action on the premise that Alawe was not recognised by statute to chair the council.

They claimed they had the exclusive rights to head the council, among the 22 members, in line with the extant tradition and the State Chieftaincy Laws.

The aggrieved 17 monarchs said they were opposed to the appointment and threatened they won’t attend the inauguration of Alawe as Council Chairman and any meeting of the council where he presides.

However, five out of the 17 aggrieved prominent monarchs- Onisan of Isan Ekiti Oba Gabriel Adejuwon; Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Abdulmumin Orisagbemi; Onitaji of Itaji-Ekiti Oba Idowu Babalola; Owa of Oke-Imesi, Oba Gbadebo Adedeji and Arinjale of Ise-Ekiti, Oba Ajayi Adetunji back-pedaled and have been attending the council meeting presided over by Oba Alabi.

But, since the appointment was made on July 31, the other 11 aggrieved Obas, shunned the council meeting and government function owing to the impression that Alawe was politically promoted to that rank and that he was not qualified to occupy the exalted seat.

The source noted the monarchs might be dethroned soon for allegedly desecrating the proper administration of chieftaincy matters and taking dissident actions and inactions against the Fayemi-led administration.

“I think Mr. Governor has directed the ministry of local government and chieftaincy matters to issue a query to them demanding explanation on their absence at the statutory Council meeting and government function they were invited to.

“As things stand now, the affected 11 prominent traditional rulers might be dethroned if they failed to respond to the query issued them.

“Since the crisis began, different reconciliation moves has been made by Governor Fayemi, the Minister of Trade, Investment and Commerce, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and particularly the Ekiti State Council of Elders. But all efforts to broker peace were obviously rejected by the warring obas.

“The Governor at different meetings told them that his actions on the appointment of Oba Alabi were based on the existing Ekiti State chieftaincy records.

“And that officially there are 22 Pelupelu obas in the record. And that he didn’t elevate any Obas to Pelupelu status.

“But could you believe, the remaining 11 monarchs because of their backers have refused to attend Council meetings, Mr Governor’s first year anniversary, the turning of sod of the council chambers, budget presentation and other engagement they were invited since August last year.

“They even requested for out- of- court settlement on the litigation instituted against Governor Fayemi and His Excellency agreed. But they have not made any overtures to the government for out of court settlement.

“So, the Government has now rejected it since it has been uncovered that the aggrieved monarchs are just using out-of court settlement plea as delay tactics to frustrate the two years tenure of Oba Alabi, which has spent 8 months.

“So, in view of that the government is not ready for dilly-dally anymore. And the Government can no longer fold its hands when this people keep desecrating the administration of Chieftaincy matters in the state.

“The governor has been quite tolerant and amiable. How many Governors can accept that for six months?

‘’Former Emir, Lamido Sanusi didn’t do up to that before he was deposed. And one of the accusations levied against Sanusi was that he shunned official state functions.

“And it was learnt from good authority that Ewi of Ado-Ekiti has provided sanctuary for them.

‘’Ewi is holding illegal meeting of dissident Obas in his place and plotting against the government. The governor has been very tolerant for their actions and inactions.”
