Man lures girl with suya in Ebonyi, defiles her

A roasted meat (suya) seller, Dawuda Ibrahim, has been taken to an Ebonyi State magistrates’ court for allegedly defiling a minor after luring her with the meat.

It was gathered that the victim, was a regular customer of the suspect, and that the suspect had constantly asked her out but she rejected the advances.

City Round gathered that on February 28, 2020, the victim went to buy suya (meat) from the suspect, and didn’t know that the suspect gave her a special one purportedly laced with love potion.

It was learnt that the girl after eating the suya, followed Ibrahim to Enugu where he had canal knowledge of her.


He was arraigned on one count of unlawful sexual intercourse on Thursday.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Mathias Eze, told the court that the offence was punishable under Section 360 of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

The charge read, “That you, Dawuda Ibrahim, on February 28, 2020, at Ugwuehara village, within Abakaliki Magisterial District, did unlawfully with an intent to have sexual intercourse with a girl, lured her to a place in Enugu State where you caressed by touching her breasts and other parts of body including her private parts, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 360 of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

The defendant who pleaded not guilty was granted bail by the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs Nnenna Onuoha, in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

The surety, according to the magistrate, must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court and must provide evidence of identification, such as National ID, voter card and passport.

The matter was adjourned till April 4, 2020, for hearing.

Trump declares national emergency over coronavirus

US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to help handle the growing outbreak of coronavirus.

The declaration - "two very big words", according to Mr Trump - allows the federal government to tap up to $50bn (£40bn) in emergency relief funds.

The move loosens regulations on the provision of healthcare and could speed up testing - the slow pace of which has been criticised widely.

There are 1,701 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the US, and 40 deaths.

Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is stepping down from the company's board to spend more time on philanthropic activities.

He says he wants to focus on global health and development, education and tackling climate change.

One of the world's richest men, Mr Gates, 65, has also left the board of Warren Buffett's massive holding company, Berkshire Hathaway.

Mr Gates stepped down from his day-to-day role running Microsoft in 2008.

Announcing his latest move, Mr Gates said the company would "always be an important part of my life's work" and he would continue to be engaged with its leadership.


But he said: "I am looking forward to this next phase as an opportunity to maintain the friendships and partnerships that have meant the most to me, continue to contribute to two companies of which I am incredibly proud, and effectively prioritise my commitment to addressing some of the world's toughest challenges."

2021 AFCON qualifiers postponed over coronavirus

Two rounds of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers scheduled for March have been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said on Friday.

Rounds three and four of the pool qualifiers were due to be played in the international window from March 25 to March 31.

But the CAF emergency committee has postponed the games until further notice, without providing alternative dates.


The Nations Cup finals in Cameroon have been moved forward to next January and February to avoid the rainy season, which means the qualifiers will have to be completed this year.

That could see a delay to the start of the African qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup which were due to start in October.

The Nations Cup qualifiers would have involved 48 countries.

Many players would have been travelling from the major European leagues in Italy, France, England, Germany and Spain, where the coronavirus has disrupted domestic fixtures.

CAF has also postponed qualifiers for the 2020 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for April and this month’s Women’s Under-20 World Cup preliminaries.

Ekiti government sends 'emotional' message to Sanusi

Ekiti Government says it will continue to recognise the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, as the Chancellor of the state-owned Ekiti State University, (EKSU).

The state government’s position was made known by the authorities of EKSU in Ado Ekiti in a letter addressed to the former emir.

Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned on March 9 by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti had appointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Chancellor of Ekiti State University in 2019.


A letter dated March 12, 2020, from EKSU’s management and signed by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eddy Olanipekun, confirmed the retention of the former emir as the Chancellor of EKSU.

The letter addressed to the former Emir said that the university would continue to recognise Sanusi as the Chancellor of the university, despite his present travail.

The letter titled: ‘Letter of Solidarity’, said the step was taken, owing to the university’s firm belief that Lamido’s wealth of experience would be useful to the university.

It reads: “We will continue to recognise you as our Chancellor with a firm belief that your wealth of experience would undoubtedly be beneficial to our university.”

The university sympathised with Lamido on his travail, saying the deposed Emir’s rulership in Kano would forever remain a reference point.

“The news of your dethronement rendered the entire university community devastated and that has gone to confirm the assertion that only God gives power and at the same time relieves if he so wishes.

“The university acknowledges the fact that you had done your best within the limited time God availed you on the throne.

“On behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students of EKSU, where you are currently serving as the Chancellor, we want to identify with you at this critical moment of your life.

“We will also like to reassure you of our unflinching support and cooperation as you traverse a new terrain,” the letter concluded.

Lagos state to review law on money lending

The Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs said government was planning to review the Laws on money lending activities in the state.

Commissioner for Home Affairs Olanrewaju Elegushi made this known on Friday, during a stakeholders’ forum with money lenders in Ikeja.

Elegushi said there was need for the review as the laws guiding the operations of the lenders were obsolete.

”You will all agree with me that some of the laws guiding our operations require total overhauling, while others have become obsolete and archaic.


”We should therefore feel free to make our inputs and suggestions, as these will help us as we approach the State House of Assembly for a more robust and all encompassing amendment on the laws on money lending in Lagos State.

”It is our expectation that the laws will have a friendly approach to the government, practitioners and the beneficiaries who constitute the larger picture of our society,” he was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria.

The commissioner said there was need for the ministry to have a befitting law and control the money lenders, bearing in mind, the great role money lending played in micro-economy of the state.

”As regulators, we cannot be a judge in our own case, this is why we have called on all of you practitioners and would-be practitioners to look at the laws guiding our activities, discuss and agree on grey areas as they affect both regulators and practitioners in the state.

”The governor is expecting that the outcome of this meeting will come up with a position that will ensure enabling environment for easy loan accessibility to citizens with an emphasis on pragmatic strategies for achieving positive and cost effective results in grassroots financing.

”This will invariably help in achieving the ‘Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy’ goal or the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda of this administration a reality,” Elegushi said.

Osinbajo’s police escort rider dies in auto crash

A police escort rider attached to the convoy of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo died in a road accident while on official duty Friday.

The escort rider, Insp. Ali Gomina, 45, was involved in an accident on the road leading to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Laolu Akande, said: “The Vice President, who is greatly saddened by this occurrence, has aborted the” scheduled “trip.

The Vice- President,  according to the statement, described Gomina as a diligent, hardworking and serious-minded officer who would be greatly missed by the team. He is survived by his wife, children, and relatives.

Kenya, Ghana, Gabon record first coronavirus cases

Kenya, Ghana, and Gabon, on Friday reported their first confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus.

In East Africa, Kenya reported one case on Friday, while in West Africa, Ghana reported two cases just as Gabon said it had logged one case.

This, however, raised the total number of African countries affected by the pandemic to 15.

According to Kenyan Health Minister, Mutahi Kagwe, the patient is a Kenyan citizen who had recently travelled to the U.S.


The Gabonese Health Ministry said that the infected person in Gabon was a national who had returned from a trip to Bordeaux, France on March 8.

The ministry added that Gabonese authorities were in the process of tracing all contacts the patient had since his arrival in the capital, Libreville.

According to the Ghanaian Health Ministry, both infected individuals returned from Norway and Turkey.

The Ghanaian Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu said that both patients were currently being kept in isolation and were stable.

“I wish to assure all Ghanaians that the Government of Ghana together with all health partners will continue to work assiduously to ensure the situation is contained,” he said.

Sanusi breaks silence, says God approved my dethronement

The dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, has stated that God approved his removal from the throne by Kano state government.

He stated this in Awe while leading Friday Muslim prayers at the palace of the Emir of Awe with the Kaduna Governor Nasir El’Rufai in attendance.

Sanusi, during the prayers, urged Muslim faithful to always obey God and accept his judgement in whatever happens.

He stated that whatever happens to anyone of them is destined by God, if not there is no way it would happen.


He explained that there is no way anything that God has not destined would come to pass.

He underscored the needs for Nigerians to also continue to pray for peace and progress of the country.

The dethroned Emir also urged Muslims to fear God in all their activities, reminding them they must give account of his or her deeds hereafter.

El-Rufai, who was in Awe to visit the dethroned Emir, arrived the Emir’s residence at about 12:45pm.

He  was received by the dethroned emir where they quickly went into a closed- door meeting after which they drove straight to Friday mosque.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for coronavirus

Bolsonaro’s son Eduardo told Fox News that they are doing further testing to confirm the diagnosis, adding that they expect the second set of testing results later Friday.

The positive diagnosis comes just days after the right-wing Bolsonaro met with President Trump in Mar-a-Lago.

In the wake of the news out of Brazil, a number of White House officials were called into an urgent meeting in the chief of staff's office, Fox News is told.


Bolsonaro had been tested after one of his deputies, who was also in attendance at the Florida resort, was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Fabio Wajngarten, the communications secretary for the 64-year-old Brazilian leader who had traveled to Miami for the meeting as well, showed flu symptoms and tested positive for the virus early Wednesday.

It also comes after Peter Dutton, Australia's minister for home affairs, tested positive after traveling back from Washington D.C., where he met Attorney General William Barr and Ivanka Trump.

Deposed Emir Sanusi jets out of Awe with El-Rufai

Deposed Kano Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II is set to leave Awe town in Nasarawa State where he was banished on Monday by Kano State Government.

Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered his release from confinement.

Sanusi, who led the 2 pm Jumat prayer at the palace of Emir of Awe, is leaving with Kaduna Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

El-Rufai arrived the town to visit the deposed Emir, a long-time friend, around 12:30noon.

They are set to be heading to Abuja.

Uefa: All competitions including Champions League and Europa League postponed

All Uefa competitions, including Champions League and Europa League matches due to be played next week, have been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The draws for the next rounds, set for 20 March, have also been postponed.

In the Champions League, Manchester City v Real Madrid, Juventus v Lyon, Barcelona v Napoli and Bayern Munich v Chelsea are all postponed.

Manchester United, Wolves and Rangers' matches in the Europa League are off.


All Uefa Youth League quarter-final matches scheduled for 17 and 18 March are also off.

Uefa said further decisions on the scheduling of the postponed fixtures "will be communicated in due course".

European football's governing body has invited representatives from all 55 of its member associations to a meeting on Tuesday in order to discuss a response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The scheduling of Euro 2020 will be discussed at the gathering.

More than 125,000 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in 118 countries around the world, according to the World Health Organization. The total number of deaths is more than 4,600.

US-Mexico border: Pregnant woman dies after fall from wall

A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Guatemala died from injuries suffered after falling from the US-Mexico border wall, officials say.

Miriam Stephany Girón Luna fell as she tried to climb the steel mesh barrier near El Paso, Texas on Saturday.

She was taken to hospital where doctors tried to deliver the baby by emergency C-section without success.

Officials say the case indicates a change in how migrants are trying to reach the US amid new restrictions.


President Donald Trump has made the fight against illegal migration to the US a major policy issue and has taken measures to deter entry across the border from Mexico, including plans for a border wall. Large sections of the border near El Paso already have some form of barrier.

Girón Luna was travelling with a 26-year-old man believed to be her partner and the baby's father, and fell more than 6m (19ft), Guatemala's foreign ministry said on Thursday (in Spanish). The man eventually found US border patrol agents, who called for an ambulance to rescue her.

According to the statement, Girón Luna was taken to a hospital in El Paso with a cerebral haemorrhage, liver and kidney lacerations and a pelvis fracture. She underwent multiple surgeries but died from her injuries on Tuesday.

The Guatemalan statement said she was seven months pregnant while US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said she was eight months.

Gloria Chavez, CBP's El Paso sector chief, blamed the death on "human smugglers" who had "encouraged her and helped her climb" the barrier. "We will engage our law enforcement partners in Mexico to find those responsible for placing these lives in danger," she said in a statement.

South Africa King Dalindyebo arrested after 'axe rampage'

South African king, a nephew of the late Nelson Mandela, has been arrested after allegedly going on the rampage with an axe in the palace.

Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, freed from jail on parole in December, broke into the Thembu royal palace in the early hours.

Witnesses said he was searching for his son, the regent, who was appointed the acting monarch while he was in prison.

The regent escaped through a window, but his wife has been injured and taken to hospital, a royal spokesman said.


King Dalindyebo was sentenced to 12 years in jail for kidnapping, assault and arson, but only served four years after the president granted some prisoners early parole last year.

He was the first monarch to be convicted of a crime in South Africa since white-minority rule ended in 1994.

The 56-year-old comes from the Thembu clan, to which Mr Mandela, South Africa's first black president, belonged.

Naira crashes in value, dollar sells for N420

On Thursday, the naira exchanged between N405 and N420 to a dollar in the Bureau De Change segment of the market.

The President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadabe, said the crude oil price which fell drastically in the international market to as low as $35 per barrel, raised speculations among the BDC operators and Nigerians in general.

He said this caused speculations in the market which were not necessary.

Gwadabe said, “With the fall in oil crude oil prices on Monday, we witnessed a lot of foreign investors portfolio dropping their assets, most especially to convert to cash.


“The movement was as a result of recklessness on the side of the operators, when they want to speculate, but there is no reason for such because the Central Bank of Nigeria had continued to maintain support for liquidity to the BDC sub-sector.”

While noting that the dollar sold for as high as N400, he said sanity was gradually returning to the sector as it sold for N375 by the close of the day.

According to him, the CBN had maintained stability at N360 in more than three years.

He said in its meeting with the CBN on Thursday, the regulator warned the BDCs against contraventions.

Coronavirus: India bans foreign tourists for one month

The Indian government has moved to drastically limit the number of people it allows to enter the country, suspending visas for visitors from all other countries for at least a month in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The measure, one of the most far-reaching responses yet to the Covid-19 outbreak by any government, effectively bans all tourism to India until at least 15 April. It will be enforced from Friday onwards.

The announcement came as the number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 72 on Thursday, and amid mounting concerns that the country’s beleaguered health system and densely populated cities would make it extremely difficult to contain a fully fledged outbreak.

Announcing the move, the health ministry said that “all Indian nationals are strongly advised to avoid all non-essential travel abroad”, warning they could be subject to a 14-day quarantine upon their return. “Indian nationals presently abroad are advised to avoid non-essential travel,” the notice added.

Kaduna to pay N30,000 minimum pension in March

The Kaduna State Government says it will begin the payment of N30,000 new minimum pension to its retirees on the old Defined Benefits Pension scheme this month.

This was contained in a statement issued by Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to Governor Nasir El-Rufai in Kaduna.

The statement stated that the new wage would upgrade 11,511 pensioners, who were previously earning less than N30,000 monthly pension.

He said that all the government agencies had received the circular from the Office of the Head of Service to effect the new pension structure.


“Following the decision of the Kaduna State Executive Council to increase the minimum pension to N30,000 monthly, the Head of Service, Bariatu Mohammed, has issued the necessary circular to government agencies to implement from March 2020,’’ he said.

According to the governor’s aide, the circular directs ‘’the agencies to comply and implement the directive of the State Executive Council (EXCO), which recently reviewed upward the minimum pension in the state.’’
