There's Going To Be Many More Deaths - Donald Trump Warns

US President Donald Trump has warned Americans that there would be tough times ahead as the surge of coronavirus continues in the country.

The US has more than 300,000 cases and more than 8,100 deaths, according to revised figures.

Trump on Saturday said ‘There’s going to be a lot of death, unfortunately.’

He said federal assistance would now be focused on areas that need it most.

“In some cases we are telling governors we cannot go there as we don’t think they need it, or someone else needs it,” he said.

“There will be a lot of death, unfortunately. There will be death. We are looking for an obvious focus on the hardest hit regions.

Trump added: “we’re going to be adding a tremendous amount of military, thousands of soldiers, medical workers, professionals,” to help deal with the pandemic.

Why I Cancelled My Wedding With Gedoni - BBNaija Khafi

They are still together and making future plans. Big brother naija star, Khafi has explained why she had to cancel her wedding with her heratrob, Gedoni.

Khafi explained that when she got engaged to Gedoni last year, they set a date of 04/04/2020 as their wedding date but her mum was having none of that because she thought the date was too close but she initially insisted on having the wedding on 4th of April.

However, she discussed her mum's opinion with her man, Gedoni who explained to her that the wedding is for their families and the marriage was for the two of them, as such it only makes sense to listen to their families contributions.

That was why her wedding was no longer planned to happen on Saturday April 4, which would not have happened anyway due to the coronavirus epidemic.

COVID-19: Abiodun commends nine-year-old girl for donating N950

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has expressed shock over a N950 donation made by a nine-year-old girl, Oluwashikemi Ogunleye, to the designated state government’s account to fight against coronavirus in the state.

Abiodun said he was thrilled by the small but significant donation from the girl, describing her as a “symbol of the future we are building together.”

Abiodun stated this during a press briefing held at his Iperu Remo residence in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

The governor explained that Ogunleye used the USSD code designed for the state to donate the money.

He said, “I am particularly thrilled by the small but very significant donation from the youngest donor so far, Oluwashikemi Ogunleye.

“She used our USSD Code to donate N950.

“Oluwashikemi, I am proud to be the governor of a philanthropist like you. You are indeed the symbol of giving of ourselves to ourselves and the future we are building together. I call on others to come forward and support the fight against COVID.”

COVID-19: Why you need to wear face masks in public — Study

A new study has adduced reasons why people may have to wear face masks whenever they are with others, especially in public places.

The researchers state that COVID-19 could be spread through mere breathing and not just by large droplets emitted in a cough or sneeze, hence the need for regular wearing of face masks.

The study, published in peer-reviewed journal, Science, on April 1, explained that if the virus could be suspended in the ultrafine mist that people produce when they breathe out, protection becomes more difficult, thus, strengthening the argument that people should wear masks in public to reduce unwitting transmission of the virus from asymptomatic carriers.

The National Academy of Sciences said the study has given a boost to an unsettling idea: that the virus can spread through the air.

Harvey Fineberg, who heads a standing committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats had, in a letter written on April 1 and addressed to the Head of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Kelvin Droegemeier, noted that though current studies on the issue are not conclusive, “the results of available studies are consistent with aerosolization of virus from normal breathing.”

Before now, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as other health agencies had insisted that the primary route of transmission for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is through the larger respiratory droplets, of up to one millimeter across which people expel when they cough or sneeze.

The agencies maintain that gravity grounds the droplets within one or two meters, even though they deposit the virus on surfaces, from which people can pick it up and get infected when they use unwashed hands to touch their mouth, nose, or eyes.

The debate began when researchers reported earlier in the year in The New England Journal of Medicine, another peer-reviewed journal that SARS-CoV-2 can float in aerosol droplets—below 5 microns across—for up to 3 hours, and remain infectious.

In their review, Fineberg and his NAS colleagues pointed to other studies, including a recent one by Joshua Santarpia and colleagues at the University of Nebraska Medical Center that found widespread evidence of viral RNA in isolation rooms of patients being treated for COVID-19.

“Viral RNA turned up on hard to reach surfaces, as well as in air samplers more than two meters from the patients,” the Nebraska team had found.

Another preprint cited by the NAS panel raised concerns that Personal Protective Equipment could itself be a source of airborne contamination.

Floyd Mayweather’s daughter arrested for ‘stabbing NBA YoungBoy’s baby mama’

Floyd Mayweather's daughter, Iyanna, has reportedly been arrested for allegedly stabbing her fiance's baby mama.

TMZ reported that the 19-year-old was arrested for 'felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon' after arguing with the mother of rapper NBA YoungBoy's child.

According to the media entity, the 19-year-old daughter of the famous professional boxer was arrested on Saturday at 1:30 a.m. and is currently in Houston's Harris County jail.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Iyanna arrived at the rapper's home and found him with Lapattra Lashai Jacobs.

The two women allegedly got into a spat with Iyanna claiming she was NBA Youngboy's fiancee and that Lapattra needed to leave.

Their argument reportedly moved into the kitchen where Iyanna armed herself with two knives.

She allegedly "charged at Lapattra with one of the knives" after Lapattra stepped closer to her, it is claimed.
Apparently, the woman didn't feel the first stab wound and claimed to police officers that Iyanna "charged at her with the second knife, stabbing her again." Lapattra was stabbed on both arms, The Blast reported.

The Harris County Precinct 4 Constables Office then received a 911 call at 6:52 pm for a disturbance at the Texas home of NBA Youngboy, The Blast claimed.

EMTs found Lapattra on the floor before taking her to the hospital and performing emergency surgery on both her arms.

NBA YoungBoy - whose real name is Kentrell DeSean Gaulden - was reportedly also handcuffed by cops as an assumed precautionary measure, before being released.

TMZ claimed that Iyanna told cops that the other woman "incited her by initially pulling her hair outside the house and then running into the kitchen, where the confrontation went down."

She also claimed that "she had never met her before."
The 20-year-old rapper and Iyanna are currently engaged.

5G Masts Set On Fire In UK Over Alleged Link With Coronavirus

5G phone masts are being set alight in the UK after online conspiracy theories have linked the cell towers to the coronavirus pandemic. The BBC reports that at least three towers were set alight last week, and police and fire services were called to extinguish the flames.

Rumors and conspiracy theories over a link between the rollout of 5G and the spread of coronavirus have been spread primarily through social media.

A variety of groups exist on Facebook and Nextdoor, where thousands of members repeat false and misleading claims that the technology is supposedly harmful.

One theory claims that the novel coronavirus originated in Wuhan because the Chinese city had recently been rolling out 5G. It’s now supposedly spread to other cities that are also using 5G.

But is there any truth in these claims? More investigations are currently on going to know the truth and not deny on mere speculations.

Governor Bala Mohammed Recovers From Coronavirus, He's Now Negative

The Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, has tested negative for Coronavirus, two weeks after testing positive for the novel virus.

A credible source at the state government house told Daily Nigerian that the governor has substantially recovered from the sickness, adding that he would soon be discharged from the Isolation facility at the government house.

Lagos to provide free medical services for pregnant women, others

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the state government would be offering free medical services to pregnant women and other persons with health emergencies in the state all through the month of April.

While speaking at a press briefing on Saturday April 4, the governor said the free medical services is part of palliative measures to cushion the effect of the lockdown imposed on the state to fight the spread of COVID-19.

“The Lagos State Government will for the duration of this lockdown, in the first instance throughout the month of April, take full responsibility for the medical bills of all patients who fall under the following categories and present themselves at all our secondary health facilities, meaning our 27 general hospitals and the maternal and child health facilities that we have round the state. Emergencies, casualties, cases including registration, laboratory tests and surgeries will be treated free of charge.

"Maternity cases and all pregnant women that have to do deliveries in this month of April, either caesarean or normal delivery will also be attended to free of charge. All admissions within this period will be free and treated free of charge in the month of April at the first instance.

What this means is that those that have the above-listed conditions that will need to access the hospitals will be treated free,” the governor assured.

This is not the best of times to die, funeral home operators say as bodies pile up in mortuaries

From one end of Lagos to the other, funeral home operators, casket makers and mortuary attendants have the same story: ‘COVID-19 has locked us out of business,’

As public and private cemeteries in Lagos suspend burial activities in compliance with the restriction of movement imposed by the Federal Government, there are reports that the number of corpses in mortuaries is gradually piling up.

Punch HealthWise visited Atan Cemetery, Yaba; Apena Cemetery, Ebute Metta; Okesuna Cemetery, Adeniji Adele; BMC Private Cemetery, Yaba and Ikoyi Cemetery, Obalende.

All the graveyards visited by our correspondent are devoid of the usual fanfare that attends burial activities.

At Atan, probably the oldest cemetery in Nigeria having been built in 1868, has been contending with congestion for a while, workers said. They said it currently has little spaces available for interment, and that the tombs were clustered too close to one another owing to the inadequacy of spaces.

Over the years, a larger portion of the graveyard has been secured and run by BMC and Ebony Casket Ventures as private vaults for the elite.

Speaking with our correspondent, the custodian of Atan graveyard who identified himself simply as Alhaji Sanni attributed the lack of activities at the graveyard to the ongoing COVID-19-induced curfew.

“We have stopped allowing people to bring corpses for burial here. This will continue until the lockdown imposed by the Federal Government is over.”

Sanni said those who plan to bury loved ones would have to endure a bit by depositing their bodies at the morgue until the lockdown is over.

“The closest mortuaries to us here are both in Mainland Hospital in Yaba and General Hospital in Lagos Island. There is also the other option of cremation, even though most Nigerians frown at it,” Sanni said.

Malawi president takes wage cut to fund coronavirus fight

Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika said Saturday he was taking a wage cut to help fund the fight against the coronavirus, and ordered his government to the same.

Mutharika said in a statement he had ordered the treasury to cut his own salary and the wages of his ministers and deputy ministers by 10 percent for three months.

The money saved would be directed towards the fight against the novel coronavirus, he added.

Malawi has so far recorded four cases of the virus.

“Government will take measures to protect jobs and incomes, protect businesses and ensure continuity of the supply chain and the survival of the economy,” he said in a statement.

Mutharika also announced the opening of new testing centres for COVID-19 and the recruitment by the health ministry of 2,000 extra staff.

“We need more soldiers and human power in this fight,” he said.

Mutharika declared a state of emergency on March 23 to combat the virus, closing schools until further notice.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. According to World Bank figures, more than half of the 17 million population lives below the poverty line.

Reps seek 2-month electricity payment waiver For Nigerians

The House of Representatives is to consider a fresh Stimulus Bill that will ensure that Nigerians get free electricity supply for two months to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Speaker Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has said.

The Speaker said the proposed Bill is to help in boosting the economy through the informal sector as the country prepares for the aftermath of the coronavirus.

The proposed Bill, which will be the second Stimulus Bill by the Green Chamber, is to be considered immediately the House reconvenes from its ongoing break, declared due to the pandemic.

It has, however, been agreed by the leadership of the National Assembly that the resumption date, initially slated for April 7, will be extended by one week in compliance with government’s 2-week stay-at-home policy.

Gbajabiamila spoke at the National Assembly on Saturday during a meeting between the National Assembly leadership and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmad, the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze, among others.

The Senate President, in his opening remarks, noted that the meeting, the second in about 10 days, was a testimony of the commitment of both arms of government at addressing the issues holistically.

He assured that the Nigerian parliament would perform its constitutional roles towards ensuring that Nigerians benefit from all efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of the disease.

While noting that Nigerians must be assisted to weather the storm of the virus, Lawan added that critical decisions needed to be taken but must be legal, which makes it important that the legislature is part of the entire process.

On his part, Gbajabiamila said the country could not afford to be unprepared for the effect of Covid-19 on its economy.

Explaining the necessity for the proposed stimulus bill for the electricity sector, the Speaker said electricity, being a commodity consumed by every household, has a greater effect on the people and that since more Nigerians are in the informal sector, the effects would be more felt by the economy.

“The issue of electricity, you’ll agree, because the Minister did say that she has been inundated by the public, just as we are, on several suggestions and ideas and I am almost a hundred percent sure that, from those ideas will be the issue of some kind of shelter, as far as electricity is concerned.

“It is one thing that will touch every household. As I said earlier, when we engaged, I discussed with the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) that packaged whatever they would require, if the government can give them, for us to allow for two months free electricity for Nigerians, they would be able to guarantee it.

“We have figures. I think we should look very seriously into that as part of our package for economic stimulus because stimulus means something that will stimulate the economy. When you are stimulating the economy, most of it will come from the informal sector.

“When you are saving people their electricity and the fact that they now have stable electricity for two months, you are also saving the monies that would go into the payment of those bills at least for two months.”

On the need by the Executive arm to source for funds in the fight against coronavirus and its socio-economic effects, the Speaker restated the determination of the National Assembly to partner the Executive in efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of the disease on Nigerians and the economy.

He, however, noted that all government funds and private donations must be transparently accounted for.

He said: “Definitely, you will be taking loans from the Special Accounts, and as the Senate President said, it has to be backed by law, which again emphasizes the need to collaborate as earlier stated by the Minister.

“There has to be a collaboration. It cannot be a unilateral decision from the National Assembly; it can’t be a unilateral decision from the Executive; there has to be a collaboration. I’m glad that we are on that trajectory.

“I’m glad that my earlier discussion with the Honourable Minister on food and other items seized by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has been taken care of, as stated by the Minister.

“We need to, as soon as possible, and let the public know. On the issue of Presidential Task Force (PTF), none of us here, I don’t think any legislator can point to, who exactly is in charge".

“Who is in charge of the disbursement? Who is in charge of the distribution of cash? Who decides what money goes where?

“Now, it is incumbent on the National Assembly to follow the money. Constitutionally, any money that comes into Nigeria, there has to be oversight.

“That is why, we in the House have directed our Committees on Health, Disaster Management and Preparedness and Donor Agencies to talk to the PTF, talk to the Minister of Health and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“I wrote letters to all these people, but I wasn’t sure where exactly the buck stops. We need to clearly define exactly who is handling the money, who is handling what?

British 5G towers set on fire because of coronavirus conspiracy theories

5G phone masts are being set alight in the UK after online conspiracy theories have misleadingly linked the cell towers to the coronavirus pandemic. The BBC reports that at least three towers were set alight last week, and police and fire services were called to extinguish the flames.

Rumors and conspiracy theories over a link between the rollout of 5G and the spread of coronavirus have been spread primarily through social media networks.

These false conspiracy theories neglect to mention that a highly contagious virus would naturally spread more in densely populated cities with access to 5G and that the coronavirus pandemic has hit counties like Iran and Japan where 5G isn’t in use yet.

There is no scientific evidence that links the coronavirus pandemic to 5G, nor any immediate negative health effects to 5G. Full Fact, an independent fact-checking charity in the UK, has explored the claims after a British tabloid newspaper highlighted them recently. it uses a higher frequency of radio waves than 4G or 3G, but regulators in the UK have recorded 5G electromagnetic radiation levels well below international guidelines.
