Five Governors Stopped From Flying Out During Lockdown

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has revealed that he has denied five governors flight approval, since the closure of the airports and the lockdown order by President Muhammadu Buhari to curb the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Sirika, three out of the four governors are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Two of the governors are from the South-east, two from South-south, while one was from North-central.

Sirika disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, at the daily press briefing by members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

“Every single flight that we approved and will be approved will be an essential flight and 98 percent of the essential flight will be connected to COVID-19.

“A few of them, maybe 1 percent may be either repatriation, requests from the diplomatic community, which must go through foreign affairs, or repatriation due to illness of another kind which will be medical-kind and those evacuations will also need a stamp of a teaching hospital.

“However, I want to share with you a discussion I had on Twitter with someone when I said we will not be able to open our airports and airspace as a result of the extension of the lockdown for normal operations and someone said;

“Kindly stop all the VIPs shuttle going on.It makes no sense to lock citizens up and allow governors to stroll in and out of Abuja. In the first instance, they carried this virus into Nigeria and now running around is not Okay.”

I said to the person that I agree with him but whatever is approved or whoever is approved to fly privately, governor or no governor is on an essential flight and it is addition and 98 percent is related to COVID-19.

“There is no exception to governors. I have denied several of such flights. Including two governors from South-south, two from South-east and by the way, three of them are members of the APC and I think one is from North-central.

“For a flight to be approved, it shows that it is diligently done. It must be essential, COVID-19 related or other essential flights like cargo that will bring in medicines or equipment or other things related to COVID-19 or our whole well-being like food. Please trust us and bear with us for this period but it will end soon by God’s grace,” he said.

Lebanese Man On The Run After Trying To Sell A Nigerian Lady

Nigerians have expressed anger at a Lebanese, identified as Wael Jerro, after he advertised a Nigerian woman for sale on the social media.

Jerro, who resides in Beirut, Lebanon, put up the passport of the victim, Busari Peace, on a Facebook group, ‘Buy and Sell in Lebanon.’

The user wrote in Arabic, “Domestic worker from Nigeria for sale with new legal documents. She’s 30 years old, she’s very active and very clean. Price: $1,000.”

The passport, which she acquired in May 2018, indicated that she hails from Ibadan, Oyo State.

An Instagram user, @thereneeabisaad, urged the Nigerian government to save the victim, adding that she might have been trafficked.

The digital marketer and web designer, while calling out Jerro, described his action as inhuman.

“I have reported to the Nigerian embassy. Please do the same if you know anyone in the Nigerian embassy in Lebanon,” she added.

Jerro, who studied at the Arab Open University, had deleted the Facebook page with which he put up the post.

But this was not before some users took his snapshot and that of his family members.

The Chairman, Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, while confirming the incident, said the Nigerian mission in Lebanon had reported the case to the “concerned authorities.”

She said, “A manhunt is on for the man and an all out search for the young girl. Let’s keep her in our prayers.”

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons also said it had started working to locate and return the victim to the country.

Fans defend Sam Smith after he is trolled for crying in his luxury £12million home

Sam Smith's fans rushed to his defence after the star was severely trolled for crying in their £12million home.

The Too Good At Goodbyes hitmaker broke down in tears in their £12million home as they struggled with adjusting to isolation amid the UK lockdown.

Ricky Gervais took aim at rich celebs moaning about residing in their lavish mansions with swimming pools during quarantine.

A flurry of trolls turned on Sam when the musician uploaded a crying video onto their social media profile.

But many of their fans were quick to defend the songwriter's tears in an outpouring of messages plastered on social media.

Followers were understanding the lockdown has been "overwhelming".

Others reiterated it was "unhelpful and unkind" to tear others down over their mental health struggles.

Among the crowds of fans, one wrote: "Sam Smith is getting a lot of criticism. I'll say this. I suffered from mental health issues, through loneliness, and being shunned when ill and vulnerable.

"Many are struggling now,but to cope with his issues instead of crying on the day a single is released,do something for others."

Others added: "That image of Sam Smith crying is going around again and gotta say I strongly disagree with the narrative around it.

"I think it’s perfectly valid to feel overwhelmed by this situation, regardless of wealth, and it is unhelpful and unkind to tear down people who are open about it."

It comes after Gervais slammed stars whining while they were living in luxury.

"Then I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool.

"And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it."

This was disclosed at a press conference by a group, Concerned Shiroro Youths in Minna.

The youths further disclosed that the bandits also attacked guests of a wedding Fatiha in Rumache community, adding that a large number of people were kidnapped while the locals were robbed of their possessions.

Co-convener of the organisation, Bello Ibrahim said that in the simultaneous attacks that occurred last week, various casualties were recorded with five people killed while many others sustained various degrees of injuries.

“In these simultaneous attacks, casualties were recorded as no fewer than five people were killed and many sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries, herds of cattle rustled and other valuables carted away.

“Also, on April 12, 2020, Rumache community was attacked in broad daylight during which a large number of people who converged for the wedding Fatiha were kidnapped and many locals robbed.

“As I address you, all the referenced people are still in the kidnappers’ den while negotiations for their release are ongoing. At Ajatai in Kwaki/Chukuba Ward of the local government, the story is the same as the criminals stormed the village in the same period under review in broad daylight and unleashed mayhem on unsuspecting locals.”

Governor appoints 427 new aides including 'special asistant on groundnut oil factory'

The Governor of Cross River, Ben Ayade has announced new appointments.

The governor through his special adviser on media and publicity, Christian Ita has announced the approval of the appointment of 427 new aides in a statement on Monday, according to TheCable.

He said the appointees include chairmen, members of boards of agencies, and special assistants.

One of the appointees include special assistant on groundnut oil factory.

In January 2020, the governor approved the appointment of 90 aides, bringing the total number of his aides to at least 517.

Ita said the governor made the decision to reduce social tension amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He said Ayade only needs the service of five percent of the newly appointed aides, adding that other appointments were made as a means of job provision.

Ita said the appointment of a special assistant on groundnut oil factory is as a result of the new factory being built in the state.

“There’s nothing wrong with that given that we’re building a groundnut oil factory. Besides it is the duty of government to create jobs for its citizens,” he said.

“The governor has said repeatedly that he only needs about 5 per cent of his appointees. So he deliberately creates this jobs to put food on the table so as to reduce social tension.”.

He said the suspension would initially last for 60 days and apply to those seeking permanent residence.

Trump had tweeted Monday he was introducing the policy to protect the 22 million unemployed Americans.

“It would be wrong and unjust for Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced with new immigrant labour flown in from abroad,” Trump said at the White House briefing.

“We must first take care of the American worker.”

Trump said the suspension of the green cards would not affect some categories of immigrants.

He did not elaborate on the exemptions.

The new immigrant policy is expected to attract fiery opposition.

Coronavirus lockdown: Police arrest 30 footballers in Kano

The Police Command in Kano on Tuesday confirmed it had arrested 30 youths allegedly involved in a football match in defiance to the lockdown order imposed on the state to contain the spread of the Coronavirus virus.

Mr Abdullahi Haruna, the Commands’ spokesman, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje had, on April 14, ordered a total lock down of the state for 7-days, starting from April 16, as part of urgent measures to stem the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.

A video that went viral on social media platforms on Monday, however, showed hundreds of enthusiastic soccer fans watching a football match in an undisclosed location in Kano metropolis, in defiance to the social distancing and lockdown order.

Youths were also seen playing football on streets in various locations of the metropolis since the inception of the lockdown in the past six-days.

The Police spokesman disclosed that the suspects were arrested after being identified as playing football match in violation of the lockdown and social distancing regulation.

According to him, the suspects were arrested on April 20, at about 5 p.m. after they played a football match in Dala Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

Haruna explained that the suspects were arrested “using Community Policing Approaches”.

It’s An Insult To Suggest Me As Abba Kyari’s Replacement - Isa Funtua

Alhaji Isa Funtua, a close ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, has given reason he cannot replace the late Abba Kyari as the president’s Chief of Staff.

Funtua, while reacting to reports that he was likely a replacement for the Office of the Chief of Staff, said it is an insult to his personality.

Speaking to BBC Hausa, the elder statesman said he should be employing people and not struggling for government appointments.

The politician maintained that appointments like Chief of Staff should be for young people not his age mates, adding that Nigerians should stop making caricature of public offices.

He was quoted as saying, “I heard people mentioning my name to replace Abba Kyari but I take the story as an insult instead. I have once worked with the government in the 80s, worked with white men and also was once a Minister of the Federal republic. For someone to mention my name for that position is an insult especially for a man who served as a minister nearly 40 years ago and out of government.

“I should be employing people now, not trying to struggle for government appointments. At my level and age, people should first see if I am fit to serve and see if I am strong enough and if I am up-to-date with current realities of governance.

“Even if they approach the president with my name, he knows he cannot ask me to serve at this age. For God’s sake, you mean at my age, I should be waking up at 8am to go to work? Haba, I am way passed that lifestyle. It’s for people like you (referring to the BBC journalist) and other much younger persons. We should stop making caricatures of public offices simply because of the sake of getting appointments,” he said.

Meanwhile, a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Monday, listed Isa Funtua as a member of President Buhari’s “cabal”.

In his piece, Fani-Kayode hinted that there were powerful people around the president, ahead of Abba Kyari.

“Some say he was the leader of the cabal. This is a cabal with seasoned and skillful old war horses, ancient northern political veterans and warriors like Mamman Daura, Zangon Daura, Mahmoud Tukur, Ismaila Isa Funtua, Lawal Daura, Baba Gana Kingibe and many others.”

Tension In Lagos As Area Boys Confront 1MillionBoys

Armed youths, who protested against alleged attacks by hoodlums known as the One Million Boys, on Monday, threw residents of Mushin, Oworonshoki, Shomolu, Bariga and Isolo areas of Lagos State into panic.

The demonstrations in the areas were as a result of the incessant attacks launched by the hoodlums on residents during the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a bid to stop the attacks by members of the group, landlords and youths have been depriving themselves of sleep at night to form vigilante groups and complement the efforts of security agents.

It was learnt that suspected members of the One Million Boys had planned to strike on Monday, but youths in the affected areas armed themselves to repel the impending attacks.

Footages trending on the social media showed hundreds of armed youths taking to the streets and moving in the directions of the planned attacks by the hoodlums.

In the Oworonshoki area, armed youths, in conjunction with security agents, mobilised to prevent the hoodlums from attacking the area.

A footnote attached to one of the footages, which was posted by @Oworotv on Instagram, read in part, “One Million Boys repelled by youths in Oworonshoki amidst the battle against COVID-19 in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole. Notorious Street gang known as One Million Boys were in Oworonshoki today trying to cause mayhem.

“Youths in Oworonshoki, who have already been engaging in vigilante duties in the past few days, all came out en masse and chased the gang. Men of the Nigeria Police Force also assisted in repelling the attack.”

In the Mushin area of the state, footage also showed armed youths threatening to attack any apprehended member of the One Million Boys.

A resident of Olorunshogo, off the Agege Motor Road area of Mushin, Johnson Olamilekan, said when the youth got wind of an alleged attack by suspected members of the gang in the Ilupeju area of the state, they mobilised to forestall the invasion of their area.

A similar situation was recorded in the Bariga area of the state.

When contacted by The Punch, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had gone round to talk to residents to stop creating panic through their actions during the lockdown, adding that the command had mobilised policemen to protect residents in the affected areas.
