Three Togo returnees test positive for coronavirus in Ogun

Dr. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner for Health in Ogun said the three new cases of coronavirus in the state were Nigerians from Togo.

They were heading to Sokoto and Jos.

She disclosed this in Abeokuta during an inspection of the ICU of a 250-bed public hospital at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Coker toured the facility along with representatives of the NCDC and the WHO.

She said that the three new cases were among the eight returnees from Togo.

The commissioner added that three of the returnees tested positive to the virus within 48 hours of testing.

Five tested negative, while the results of two others are being awaited.

‘Cannibal’ pensioner arrested after police spot p.e.n.i.s of missing man in his garden

A 'cannibal' pensioner was arrested after cops spotted the severed p.e.n.i.s of a missing man in his front garden.

The gruesome discovery led horrified officers to two skeletons hidden under the floorboards of the property in Siberia.

Scrap metal collector Viktor Zakharov, 66, from Severnoye village, allegedly confessed to murder as police investigate whether he cannibalised his victims.

As well as the severed pen!s in the garden and skeletons stashed away, police found body parts in the outside toilet.

Law enforcement had launched a hunt for Petr Lysyany, 36, whose wife had reported him missing.

His bicycle was found near Zakharov’s tumbledown house and the pensioner admitted drinking with Lysyany several days earlier and claimed the man had gone home drunk.

“At that moment a policeman saw a severed pen!s in the yard,” reported Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper citing law enforcement sources.

“He went inside and began to check the grounds.

“As a result, parts of the missing man’s body were found in the outside toilet and the garden.

“In the cellar, they removed the plank floor and found two skeletons.

“One of the dead was identified by a pin in his leg.

“This man disappeared a little over a year ago.”

Police named the other victims as Viktor Dryumov, 63, who went missing in March, and Sergey Tikhonov, 53.

They said Zakharov had confessed to the killings, and using an axe to dismember.

Zakharov - who earlier served a 15-year sentence for the murder of his sister in 1991 - had been interrogated on the disappearance of Dryumov and Tikhonov.

He passed a lie detector test.

Governor Ganduje seeks N15b support from FG to fight COVID-19 in Kano

Kano State Government has revealed on Wednesday that it has applied for N15b from the Federal Government to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

This was disclosed bythe state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, during a television programme ‘Politics Today’ aired on Channels Television.

The governor stated that the state had not received a dime from the federal government as support to fight the COVID-19 disease since when the state recorded its first index case of the virus.

Kano’s COVID-19 cases are rising by the day and in just over a week, the cases are close to a hundred.

Ganduje had last week declared a lockdown to curb the spread of the virus within the state.

He explained that the N15b would be expended in paying voluntary health workers engaged by the state to support the health personnel, personal protective equipment (PPE) and the creation of other testing centres.

“You can understand that Kano is the most populated in the country hence the only testing centre at AKTH is not enough for us,” said Ganduje.

However, reacting to the reported mass death in the state, the governor denied the report.

''No proof yet that COVID-19 is sexually transmissible''

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the Novel Coronavirus Pandemic has said there is yet to be any scientific proof that the Coronavirus infection is s.e.xually transmissible.

National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, who stated this on Wednesday during the daily press briefing by the task force, also denied authoring any statement that suggested that the federal government was planning a complete national lockdown.

Dr Aliyu spoke about s.e.xual transmissibility of COVID-19 while reacting to a question bordering on alleged proof that the virus, after treatment for the disease, still remains in male testis.

The National Coordinator said although the world was still in the early days of the disease, no research had proven that it could be transmitted true sex, citing a test carried out on some women who had tested positive to COVID-19, but whose genital secretions tested negative for COVID-19.

“At the moment, there’s no evidence of s.e.xual transmission when it comes to COVID-19, but of course, we are still in the early days of the disease. The same thing happened in the case of Ebola, when subsequently it was proven that it was sexually transmissible.

“There was a small test case series of ten women who had severe COVID-19 and genital secretions were negative of COVID-19 virus. I think it’s still in the early days, I’ll just say, watch this space”, he said.

Nigerian Governors impose 14-day interstate lockdown

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has unanimously agreed to the implementation of an inter-state lockdown in the country over the next two weeks to mitigate spread of the virus from state to state.

A limited lockdown of Lagos, Ogun and the FCT will expire next Monday.

NGF chairman, Kayode Fayemi said the governors agreed on the measure at their virtual meeting on Wednesday.

In a communique issued at the end of the 6th videoconference, the governors also called for the decentralisation of COVID-19 response as the best chance of nipping the spread of the virus in communities in the country.

Fayemi said that the call was imperative with over 25 states now affected by spread of the virus and increasing evidence of community transmission.

“Following an update from the NGF Secretariat on the number of COVID-19 cases in the country, members expressed serious concern over the rising spread of the virus among health workers.

“The governors resolved to work with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to ensure that health workers are adequately provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) and are constantly trained on the use of protective gears.

“In order to strengthen coordinated implementation of necessary public health recommendations across states, Governors resolved to set up COVID-19 Committees at the regional level, headed by their State Commissioners of Health.

“Regional Committees will continue to interface with the State Task Force Committees on COVID-19 already established in each state.

“The Forum also received briefing from the Governors of Lagos, Bauchi, Oyo and Ogun states who shared their experiences and lessons from the fight against COVID-19.

“Governors unanimously agreed to the implementation of an inter-state lockdown in the country over the next two weeks to mitigate spread of the virus from State to State. Only essential services will be permitted,” he said.

Fayemi briefed the Forum on the rapidly evolving situation of the COVID-19 pandemic and coordination efforts with the Federal Government, multilateral and bilateral partners, and the private sector through the Coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID).

The forum held a minute’s silence in honour of all Nigerians who had lost their lives to coronavirus, especially health workers who were in the front lines of the epidemic.

Members also conveyed their condolence to President Muhammad Buhari and the people of Borno on the death of the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari who passed away on April 17.

“Lastly, the Forum congratulated the Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai who after nearly four weeks of testing positive and observing very strict medical regime has now received two consecutive negative test results for the coronavirus,” he added

Same family members can’t get cash disbursements – FG

Members from the same family cannot receive money from the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme ongoing in many states, the Federal Government clarified on Tuesday.

It also stated that a total of 279 trucks of grains had been deployed to the frontline states that were put on lockdown by the President.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, disclosed this at the daily briefing on COVID-19 updates in Abuja.

She further said the government was focusing on digitalising the CCT scheme and was getting the BVN of beneficiaries as well as their mobile phone contacts to improve on the transparency of the process.

On claims that two members of a family were paid N20,000 each recently, the minister said it was highly impossible for such to happen.

Umar-Farouq said, “This is near impossible because the process involved is a very tedious one. All critical stakeholders in the community are involved.

“It is almost impossible for members of the same household to get this intervention.”

Umar-Farouq said the humanitarian ministry had deployed 279 trucks from the 70,000 metric tonnes of grains approved by the President as food palliatives.

NYSC assures Corps Members of paying March, April allowances

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured that it will pay the allowances for March and April.

Director-General, Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, spoke through the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi, urging Corps members to remain calm and safe.

“As we earnestly look up to the Almighty God for help, management wishes to reassure all corps members once more that allowances for the months of March and April shall be paid to everyone, without recourse to the monthly clearance exercise.

“You are all enjoined to stay calm, stay safe, observe safety precautions given from time to time by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and always stay tuned to our traditional and new media platforms,” he said.

He also urged them to recommit themselves to the ideals of the scheme even as they put  the country’s interest at the frontline.

This he said, include; rendering selfless service to Nigeria and humanity; personal development and emancipation from the clutches of tribalism and corruption—the twin vices that we must defeat.

Pastor accuses Lagos hospital of negligence after wife’s death during childbirth

A Lagos-based pastor, Ayobami Taiwo, has accused health workers at the Epe General Hospital of negligence, following the death of his wife, Oluremi Esan, during childbirth.

The 40-year-old Taiwo lamented that the doctor and nurses on duty abandoned his wife after she was referred on emergency to the hospital by the Epe Primary Health Centre.

He explained that it was discovered during a scan on April 13, 2020, that Oluremi had placenta previa and a Caesarean Section needed to be performed to save her life and that of the baby.

The pastor told Punch Metro that when he refused to buy a delivery kit that was claimed would be needed for the operation from the nurses, his wife was left unattended to by the doctor and the nurses.

Taiwo stated, “When we got to the doctor at the general hospital, he checked my wife’s file and said the case was a ‘time bomb’ and that Oluremi required a CS and I told him that was what we were told at the primary health centre and that I was told that my wife should not be allowed to have any contraction, because it would lead to us fighting for her life.

“The doctor said I should get four pints of blood ready and that he was still checking whether to book my wife for the CS for the following day or Thursday. The nurses told me to pay N29,000 for the delivery kit that was meant for someone else, who  eventually did not need it, but some items had been used from it; so, another health official told me to ask the doctor’s permission to buy from the nurses or he should give me a prescription to buy from the pharmacy.

“I went to meet him again around 9pm to ask for the situation of things and he said he would ask the nurses to admit my wife in the ward and watch over her and when I tried to explain to him that the situation was an emergency, he asked if I wanted to teach him his job.

“I went home around 10pm and I was on the phone with my wife till around 2am when I told her to go and sleep, but she called me back around 2.45am that she was feeling pain in her stomach and around 3.05am, she started bleeding, but what the nurses did was to put a fan in her direction and told her to lie down.

“When I got to the hospital around 6am, my wife was in a pool of her own blood and crying, because she was in excruciating pain. I immediately approached the doctor and nurses for help, but the same one forcing the delivery kit on us shouted at me and insulted me to leave her presence. Nothing I said could assuage her, not even the cries of my wife.”

Taiwo added that when the doctor and the nurses refused to attend to his wife, he went to the administrative block of the hospital and was able to get the numbers of some senior medical personnel, who offered the much needed help.

According to him, when he got back to the ward, the doctor, who had earlier refused to attend to his wife, told him that the delivery kit would be given to them for free, because Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had ordered that treatment for pregnant women in the state should be free of charge.

He added, “My wife, who had bled from 3am till around noon, was later wheeled into the theatre after losing so much blood. She was not comfortable after the operation and the doctor gave me a prescription to buy a drug.

“He asked if my wife had an underlying illness and I told him that she did not have. It was then it dawned on me that he was looking for a soft landing to wriggle out of the situation. My wife died because she bled for so long without medical attention.

“I beg you to help me get justice; I want the Lagos State Government to investigate and sanction the workers for their negligence and failure to uphold the Hippocratic Oath to save lives at all times.”

However, efforts to get the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Mustapha Bamidele, to comment on the incident proved abortive as his telephone rang out and a text message sent to him was not replied to as of the time of filing this report.

Also, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, did not pick his calls nor replied to a text message sent to his mobile telephone.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the state Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, told Punch correspondent to send the details of the incident to him to enable the ministry to investigate the matter.

“I don’t have any knowledge of the matter, but it is something we are going to investigate. Please send me the details so that investigation can start immediately on it,” he stated.

Mum hits back at people who shamed her 4-year old daughter for wearing nappies

It's no secret that parents always want the best for their kids, but sometimes they have to accept that they can't control everything.

While you can try and help and provide encouragement, some children need to be left to develop at their own speed.

One mum has learned this lesson recently and it's something she feels other parents should think about - especially before they judge others.

Parenting blogger Laura Mazza took to social media to reveal that she had been shamed for the fact her four-year-old daughter, Sofia, still wears nappies.

In a post on Instagram, the mum-of-three explained how she'd received "dirty looks" for not toilet training the youngster, but she wasn't going to let that get to her, as she knew her daughter would make progress in her own time.
View this post on Instagr

She is 4 years old. 4 years. 5 weeks and 1 day. And she isn’t toilet trained. When she was 6 months old, she didn’t sit up. Not even at 8 months. I took her to a specialist and he said she’s fine, she will do it, “in her own time” And she did. She didn’t walk until much later and we worried so much but when I took her to a specialist, they said, she will get there, “she’s just doing it in her own time” She didn’t speak as quickly as her brothers. While they were counting to 10 before two, she barely spoke. I took her to a specialist, and she said “she will do it in her own time.” And she did. She doesn’t shut up. She hates loud noises. She covers her ears. She frightens easily. She barely plays with other children. She likes her alone time. She has different traits than her brothers and sisters. She’s met milestones later than them. She’s different. But I’ve done nothing different. I’ve loved them all the same. She’s funny, she’s fierce, she knows what she wants and what she doesn’t. She is creating her own life. She is doing things differently because she is different. She does things in her own way, and in her own time. She’s somewhere on a spectrum of something and I think that’s why when I watch her, I am in awe. Because she drives me crazy because she’s a force to be reckoned with and I think that’s what I love about her the most. I love that she is so different. So today when I was met with a disproving look, one of shock and full of judgement about her not wanting to toilet train. About her stubbornness and fear and when I was given unsolicited advice with judgement. I confidently shook my head and I proudly said “she will do it. In her own time.”
A post shared by Laura Mazza BAppSc(Psych) MSW (@itslauramazza) on

The powerful post read: "She is four years old. Four years. Five weeks and One day. And she isn’t toilet trained.

"When she was six months old, she didn’t sit up. Not even at eight months.

"I took her to a specialist and he said she’s fine, she will do it, 'in her own time'. And she did.

The mum continued: "She’s met milestones later than them. She’s different. But I’ve done nothing different. I’ve loved them all the same.

"So today when I was met with a disproving look, one of shock and full of judgement about her not wanting to toilet train. I confidently shook my head and I proudly said 'she will do it. In her own time'."

Laura's post was met with an outpouring of support.

One person replied: "I literally felt like I was reading a story about my daughter!! It is so hard. SO SO hard to not feel like you're doing something wrong by not forcing them, but I cant bring myself to do it! I'm so happy you shared this, thank you."

Another said: "Kids do things at their own time. My little girl didn’t walk til 15 months MIL kept reminding me that her son walked at nine months."

A third added: "My daughter is the same age. Refuses to toilet train also!! Thanks for the comforting reminder the day WILL come."

Someone else wrote: "This is perfect. And so so so true. Do not judge yourself and your child with other people's preconceived ideas. Go with the flow, let it happen."

Ramadan: Look for moon in your homes, NSCIA tells Muslims

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs on Tuesday called on Muslims to observe the practice of social distancing when looking out for the moon in the forthcoming Ramadan.

The organisation specifically advised that Muslim fateful should look for the moon at their residences without going out in groups.

The statement partly read, “Consequent upon the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee, the President-General enjoins the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to search for the crescent of Ramadan 1441 AH immediately after sunset on Thursday, April 23, 2020, which is equivalent to 29th Sha’aban 1441 AH.

Five Governors Stopped From Flying Out During Lockdown

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has revealed that he has denied five governors flight approval, since the closure of the airports and the lockdown order by President Muhammadu Buhari to curb the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Sirika, three out of the four governors are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Two of the governors are from the South-east, two from South-south, while one was from North-central.

Sirika disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, at the daily press briefing by members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

“Every single flight that we approved and will be approved will be an essential flight and 98 percent of the essential flight will be connected to COVID-19.

“A few of them, maybe 1 percent may be either repatriation, requests from the diplomatic community, which must go through foreign affairs, or repatriation due to illness of another kind which will be medical-kind and those evacuations will also need a stamp of a teaching hospital.

“However, I want to share with you a discussion I had on Twitter with someone when I said we will not be able to open our airports and airspace as a result of the extension of the lockdown for normal operations and someone said;

“Kindly stop all the VIPs shuttle going on.It makes no sense to lock citizens up and allow governors to stroll in and out of Abuja. In the first instance, they carried this virus into Nigeria and now running around is not Okay.”

I said to the person that I agree with him but whatever is approved or whoever is approved to fly privately, governor or no governor is on an essential flight and it is addition and 98 percent is related to COVID-19.

“There is no exception to governors. I have denied several of such flights. Including two governors from South-south, two from South-east and by the way, three of them are members of the APC and I think one is from North-central.

“For a flight to be approved, it shows that it is diligently done. It must be essential, COVID-19 related or other essential flights like cargo that will bring in medicines or equipment or other things related to COVID-19 or our whole well-being like food. Please trust us and bear with us for this period but it will end soon by God’s grace,” he said.
