Indian woman 'gang raped by three men' after quarantining alone in school

An Indian woman was allegedly gang raped in a school where she had been quarantined for a night amid the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, a police official has said.

The reported incident is said to have occurred last week in in the desert state of Rajasthan when the victim, a daily wage earner, sought shelter and was taken by police to a school.

She had been walking alone for miles and lost the way to her native village, before entering a police station, authorities said on Sunday.

In the absence of a quarantine centre, officers housed her for the night in a school building, where she was allegedly raped by three men.

"Three local men who raped the woman inside the school on April 23 have been arrested and sent to jail," said Parth Sharma, a deputy superintendent of police in Sawai Madhopur district in Rajasthan and the investigating officer in the case.

The victim, aged between 40-45 years, said in a statement to the police that she had been walking for several days from Sawai Madhopur before she reached a village where she was raped.

Sharma said the woman had been sent to a local quarantine facility to get tested for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

"We don't know how long she was on her own for, and who she came into contact with, and her test results are not yet known," he said, adding that a junior police official had been suspended for negligence.

The nationwide lockdown imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month to contain the spread of the virus prompted tens of thousands of workers who lost their jobs in cities to walk for days in desperation to reach their homes in rural India.

Many of them are now in overcrowded quarantine centres and authorities are struggling to cope.

Experts fear that the world's biggest lockdown has not been able to reduce the spread of COVID-19, and country has begun to see a surge in cases with testing being ramped up.

India, with a population of 1.3 billion, has reported 26,496 cases of COVID-19, and 824 deaths.

Despite stringent laws, rape occurs every 20 minutes, on average, according to federal crime data.

Newsreader Sarah-Jane Mee changes birth plans due to hospital coronavirus fears

Sarah-Jane Mee has said she is planning to have a home birth because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 41-year-old Sky News presenter said that she did not want to go to hospital in case Covid-19 restrictions meant that she could not have her fiancé by her side.

Speaking to Hello! magazine, Sarah-Jane said that she wanted to make sure that Ben Richardson could remain with her and she was not planning on going into hospital alone.

She said: "I don't want to be walking into hospital on my own to have this baby, so I am considering a home birth.

"I have an amazing midwife and I've been using this incredible hypnobirthing teacher caller Katharine Graves, and they have been getting my head together.

"I had never considered it before but, because of everything that's going on, it makes me feel more relaxed to think about having the baby at home, rather than Ben not being able to come into the ward until the very final moment.

"I think my plan A now is a home birth."

Sarah-Jane said that she has had an uncomplicated pregnancy and is in good health so there is "no reason" for her not to consider having a home birth. She added that her "life literally changed in a couple of minutes" when Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced lockdown measures as her pregnancy put her in "the vulnerable category".

However she said that going outside for a daily walk has helped her get her "head straight" and she is now "trying to find the positives", which include the slower pace of life and spending more time with her fiancé.

Sarah-Jane added: "I have been concentrating on that and it has really helped."

"We have spent quality time together, when else would we go for an hour's walk together every day?

"It's weird but we're also finding the beauty in it: the Thames has never been so still, there are ducks and you can hear birdsong.

"It's really calm and really nice."

Coronavirus vaccine participant 'doing fine' after fake reports of her death

A woman who was one of the first people injected as part of human trials for a coronavirus vaccine has said she is ‘doing fine’ after fake reports of her death.

An online article claimed microbiologist Elisa Granato, who took part in the UK trial in Oxford on Thursday, had died following complications when taking the vaccine.

The Government later said the story is ‘completely untrue’, and warned people about sharing unsubstantiated claims online.

Following the article about her ‘death’, Dr Granato tweeted about the news before making her Twitter account private.

She wrote: ‘Nothing like waking up to a fake article on your death … I’m doing fine everyone.’

Dr Granato was one of two people to take part in the trial and said she was ‘excited’ to support the efforts by volunteering.

On Sunday afternoon, the Department of Health and Social Care tweeted: ‘News circulating on social media that the first volunteer in a UK coronavirus vaccine trial has died is completely untrue.

‘Before sharing unsubstantiated claims online, use the Share checklist to help stop the spread of harmful content.’

Earlier this month, the Government relaunched its Don’t Feed The Beast public information campaign to encourage people to question what they read online.

The Share checklist includes basic advice, such as checking the source of a story and analysing the facts before sharing.

A Covid-19 vaccine is considered the ultimate exit strategy by many experts, and scientists across the world are racing to develop one that can be produced at scale.

The Oxford Vaccine Group hopes to have at least a million doses of its candidate ready in September.

Covid-19: Senegal produces $1 quick testing kits, $60 ventilators for it's citizens

At a time when the world is struggling to control the spread and impact of Coronavirus, Senegal is employing it’s technical and medical expertise to implement mass testing in the country.

Senegalese scientists have developed $1 quick diagnostic Covid-19 testing kits and is testing everyone; with or without symptoms. The Covid-19 testing kits work just like a pregnancy test where people drop blood or saliva onto the kit and their Covid-19 test result shows within a short period of time.

With a population of over 16 million people, and only 50 ventilators nationwide, Senegalese engineers have also developed and are 3D printing ventilators for $60 as opposed to the $16,000 ventilators available worldwide.

Inman interview by Aljazeera, Dr Amadou Saal revealed that Senegal is gearing towards producing between 2 to 4 million kits that can be used in other countries as well as domestically.

Covid-19 Lockdown: Miami went 6 weeks murder-free for first time since 1957

For the first time since the 1950s, the city of Miami has reportedly gone six weeks without a murder.

According to the Miami Herald, police say the city, once known as America’s murder capital, did not report a homicide from February 17 to April 12. The city hasn’t seen a murder-free span like this since 1957.

Miami police say here has been a 33 percent increase in homicides since March 17, when county Mayor Carlos Gimenez issued a stay-at-home order amid the coronavirus crisis.

However, Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina says these numbers are not an accurate representation of crime in the city. Colina says he’s concerned about unreported domestic violence and child abuse now that the city is in quarantine.

Officials note these statistics do not represent all of Miami-Dade County and are specific to the city of Miami.

2020 school certificate exams not cancelled –WAEC

The West African Examinations Council has denied cancelling the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates.

The Head of National Office, WAEC, Nigeria, Mr Patrick Areghan, in a statement on Sunday, urged Nigerians to disregard the fake publication circulating on social media.

He said, “Our attention has been drawn to a fake publication circulating in the social media, to the effect that the West African Examinations Council had cancelled the conduct of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and was, therefore, set to refund the sum of N22,500.00 to each candidate who had enrolled for the examination.

“The publication is patently false and deceitful. It is nothing but the handiwork of mischief makers who are out to defraud innocent and unsuspecting candidates and their parents/guardians. This piece of news is certainly not from the West African Examinations Council. It falls short of the council’s style, language and factual details. They got it all wrong.

“The examination was supposed to start in Nigeria on April 6, 2020 and not April 15, 2020, as stated by the authors. The examination fee is N13,950.00 only, not N22,500.00. It is, therefore, not reasonable to refund candidates an amount higher than what they had paid to register for the examination.”

Areghan added that the examination body had not announced the cancellation of the 2020 WASSCE but only announced a postponement until normalcy was

America's toy factory now making coronavirus face shields

A Massachusetts factory that normally makes some of America's most beloved board games, including Monopoly, Risk and Candyland, has pivoted to making personal protective equipment for heath care workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Charlie Baker said Saturday.

The Cartamundi-owned Hasbro factory is making 50,000 face shields per week for hospitals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the Republican said after a tour of the East Longmeadow facility.

Making games and making personal protective equipment have the same goal, President and COO John Frascotti said.

“It is our job to make the world a better place for children and their families,” he said.

Baker also said an investigation into the high number of COVID-19-related deaths at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home is progressing, but there is no timetable for completion.

Former federal prosecutor Mark Pearlstein has “free reign” to conduct his investigation, Baker said.

State health officials on Saturday announced an additional 174 coronavirus deaths, pushing the state’s total to more than 2,700.

The state also also reported nearly 2,400 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total number of reported cases to more than 53,000.

British PM to return to work on Monday as COVID-19 deaths pass 20,000

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to work on Monday after recovering from the novel coronavirus, a government spokesperson confirmed to dpa.

He has been recuperating at Chequers, the prime minister’s residence outside London, after he was released from hospital on April 12.

Johnson spent a week undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel virus, at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, including three nights in intensive care after his condition dramatically deteriorated.

Johnson is understood to have held a three-hour meeting on Friday ahead of his return with senior cabinet members including Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who has been deputising for him, Britain’s Press Association news agency reported.

Sky News on Saturday quoted a government source as saying that Johnson was “raring to go” ahead of his return to Downing Street on Monday.

Johnson’s return to work comes at a crucial time, as pressure mounts on the government to ease coronavirus lockdown measures.

On Saturday, the COVID-19 death toll in Britain surpassed 20,000, according to the most recent information from the Health Ministry.

Although experts believe that the worst of this infection wave has passed, the death rate could still rise for a while, as the great number of people already infected either convalesce or die.

The new data, released on Saturday, showed that 813 people died in the 24-hour period up to 5 pm (1600 GMT) on Friday, for a total of 20,319 dead.

In that same time period, 4,913 people tested positive for the coronavirus for a total of 148,377 infections.

However, the deaths listed only include those who died in hospital, meaning the true number is likely higher.

Johnson’s government has been criticised for what some say was a delayed and ambivalent response to the spread of the disease, which has spread worldwide since it was first reported in China late last year.

Why Buhari's New Chief Of Staff Will Also Have Too Much Power

The Chief of Staff (CoS) portfolio under the current Nigeria’s presidency is unarguably the most powerful in recent history. The office gained prominence when Muhammadu Buhari became President after three attempts – 2003, 2007, 2011.

In 2015, Buhari appointed Abba Kyari, a man he recently disclosed was his friend of 42 years.

When Kyari was alive, he regularly made headlines and most were not favourable reports. He was accused of being a cabal member, usurping the functions of other appointees, calling the shots at will, among others.

It is no fresh news that some Nigerians coined different nomenclature to describe Kyari. They referred to him as Nigeria’s “de facto president, deputy president, real vice president”, etc.

The Yoruba World Congress (YWC) echoed this after he passed on. YWC President, Prof. Banji Akintoye, claimed that Kyari was the one controlling the affairs of the Federal Government of Nigeria. The 85-year-old historian and writer said it was outrageous that Buhari ordered all appointees to go through Kyari on matters that required his attention.

“We are talking of ministers, ambassadors, top civil servants. A Chief of Staff is no more than the head of the president’s kitchen cabinet that has no superiority to the structural pillars established by the constitution.

“Abba Kyari’s unconstitutional position as de facto president in recent times, coupled with an elected President who is periodically nowhere to be found, has seriously denuded the legitimacy of government in our country”, Akintoye protested.

But the question has been and still is:
How did an office that has been in place since 1999 and under three previous presidents reach a point that the occupier got so famous with repeated mentions? D

DAILY POST findings revealed that Kyari was super powerful because unlike other presidents, Buhari does not have a Principal Private Secretary (PPS). The PPS is the official who runs presidents’ and governors’ offices. The role can be a political appointment or a civil service position. Their work spaces are usually sited meters away to the principal’s office.

Among others, they write presidents, governors’ letters and also treat the same when received. But it appears that Buhari gave the same powers to Kyari when he blocked direct access to him and ordered all appointees to go through his CoS.

In August 2019, three months after he was re-elected, the Nigerian leader told new ministers to submit any request meant for him to Kyari. In his remarks at a retreat, Buhari stated: “In terms of coordination, kindly ensure that all submissions for my attention or meeting requests be channeled through the Chief of Staff, while all Federal Executive Council matters be coordinated through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

The directive sparked outrage as critics insisted that the constitution does not even recognize the office of the CoS. In a chat with DAILY POST, a source that has been close to the presidency for many years agreed that the non-appointment of a PPS increased Kyari’s influence.

“The PPS is a revered position. The appointee knows every single detail in letters sent to a President or a governor”, he noted. “President Obasanjo appointed Steve Oronsaye as PPS. He later added Permanent Secretary, State House, to his job. So Oronsaye was PPS/PS.

“At that time, the CoS was General Abdullahi Mohammed (rtd), the National Security Adviser to former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar.

“President Yar’Adua appointed David Edevbie as the PPS while General Abdullahi continued as CoS.

“President Jonathan appointed Mike Oghiadomhe as CoS and later General Jones Oladeinde Arogbofa (rtd). Hassan Tukur was the PPS.

“President Buhari did not appoint one and I believe he has his reasons. However, I think the late CoS had more control due to absence of a PPS”.

It remains to be seen if Buhari will eventually appoint a PPS or go on with only the CoS when he appoints Kyari’s successor.

Coronavirus pandemic has humbled me –Tiwa Savage

Earlier in the week, singer, Tiwa Savage, had an Instagram Live session, during which she sang and rubbed minds with her fans.

During the chat, the ‘Attention’ singer spoke on how the COVID-19 crisis had humbled her. She said, “This is a really weird time for everyone. Whether you are rich or famous; it affects everyone.

It can be a little scary actually because one doesn’t know what would happen next. One doesn’t know what tomorrow brings.

The coronavirus pandemic has humbled me because I had my album ready to be released. I had a lot of shows, festivals and tours lined up. All of that had to be cancelled and some postponed. We don’t know’’, when this will stop. This is despite all the plans one has already made. It definitely humbled all of us.”

The pretty mother of one also urged her fans to learn the necessary lessons from the pandemic. Savage noted that it was only God that could take the world out of the crisis. She added, “When this is over, I hope it teaches us to value the small things in life.  I hope it teaches us to value spending time with family and saving; it is important to save.

When we get back to our normal lives, I hope we don’t go back to what we were doing before. I hope this teaches us to value family, our mental state and being close to God. It’s only God that can take us out of this.”

After the conversation, Savage surprised her fans when she performed some popular Yoruba Christian hymns.

Sanwo-Olu threatens mass burial for unclaimed corpses within two weeks

The  Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said on Saturday that people who have corpses in public mortuaries in the state have two weeks to bury them, after which he said the state would do mass burial for all unclaimed corpses.

The governor lamented that even though funeral was not on the list of activities exempted from the lockdown restrictions, mortuaries in the state had become congested and the state needed to act.

He explained that the inability of many families to bury the corpses of their loved ones was due to Lent and the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.

The governor noted however that deaths as a result of coronavirus are exempted. The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had said that corpses of people who died of COVID-19 would not be released to families.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Government House, Sanwo-Olu also said he had approved the release of 209 inmates from prisons in the state, adding that government was doing all it could to contain the spread of the virus in the state.

As of Saturday, out of the 1,182 cases in the country, Lagos has 689, out of which 116 had recovered and 20 had died.

The governor said, “I’m constrained to make this appeal to all Lagosians who have the corpses of their loved ones in the mortuaries to please go ahead and schedule the funerals.

“Due to the inability to hold funerals, occasioned by the restriction on movement, the mortuaries in Lagos State are now full and in urgent need of decongestion. Let me make it clear at this point that these are not COVID-19 deaths.

“If we are unable to see a decongestion of the mortuaries across the state in the next two weeks, the Lagos State Government will be compelled to carry out mass burial to achieve this. We do not want to be forced to do this, which is why we are asking for your cooperation in this regard.”

The governor pointed out that families were free to hold or attend funeral service but such burials could only be done in Lagos due to the interstate lockdown imposed by governors.

He, however, stressed that the attendees must comply with safety requirements. “The total number of persons at the funeral, including officiating religious leaders, must not exceed 20; physical distancing must be maintained; all attendees/mourners must use (face) masks and ensure they wash their hands before and after the ceremony,” he said.

Among the prominent persons that died in Kano on Saturday were Prof Ibrahim Ayagi, Dr Musa Umar Gwarzo, Alhaji Dahiru Rabiu (former Grand Khadi), Musa Tijjani (Editor of Triumph Newspaper) and Adamu Isyaku Dal, who was a former Executive Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board.

The spate of deaths in the state has continued to instil fear and confusion among people living in the state.

A dweller, Tijjani Abdullahi, who spoke to our correspondent, called on the state government to investigate the increasing number of deaths in the city in order to address the possible cause of the deaths.

“The state government has concentrated on the fight against coronavirus while people are dying of other ailments in silence. Some even suspected that the people are dying of coronavirus without being detected.”

According to him, most of the recent deaths have been attributed to high blood pressure, malaria, ulcer and even hunger, adding that the dearth of medical doctors to attend to patients in hospitals across the state has become worrisome.

Some people in the state have continued to express concern over the increase in the number of deaths since the state government imposed a total lockdown on the state as a result of the rising cases of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on Wednesday denied that there was any strange death in the state, saying, “There is nothing to show that there is unusual frequency of deaths in Kano State.”

The Kano State Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 said the number of confirmed cases was 74 as of Saturday.

The Coordinator of the taskforce committee, Dr Tijjani Hussaini, told Punch correspondent in Kano on Saturday.

Ilorin residents defy lockdown order for morning exercises

Residents of Ilorin in Kwara have taken to early morning exercises in order to keep fit even as the lockdown is extended.

News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reported that people were seen in small groups of twos or threes comprising family members, on large school fields, working out, while others took to jogging on the deserted roads.

Some of them who spoke with NAN said it had become imperative to exercise because the lockdown was extended longer than anticipated.

Mr Moses Akinola, a resident, said that the concerns of many were that sitting at home doing nothing could increase the risk of weight-related ailments.

“I have the tendency to be obese, in fact, according to my doctor I am overweight right now, sitting at home from morning till night will do me no good.

“So I jog for 30 minutes in the morning and do the same by evening after I must have taken dinner. It is actually an opportunity to work on my weight,” he said.

Miss Tomisin Olutimi said “I am a student, I play volleyball a lot in school, now that school is closed I can only help myself by doing these exercises.

“It will make me fit and healthy until school resumes,” she said.

A mother seen with her children who simply identified herself as Mrs Grace said that exercising with her children would aid bonding.

“They love it, sometimes before I am ready they are set to go, it excites them because I try to keep them indoors as much as possible.

“So coming to the field to exercise as a family is good for them, and also for me. It makes us happy,” she said.

A fitness instructor, Mr Emmanuel Ogun, said exercises would help brain alertness.

“Exercising makes the brain alert, especially at a time like this, when you have to be indoors.

“It awakens the body, you feel light no matter how insignificant you think the exercise is.

“We cannot deny that people are eating more than necessary now that they are at home, so there is need to shed some weight.

“I commend them for taking the initiative to exercise in order to keep fit, it is a step in a very good direction, as you can see I am also not relaxing, I also have to keep fit,” he told NAN.

Mum 'films husband brutally beating their 6 year-old son for refusing to do push ups'

A cruel dad allegedly beat up his six-year-old son for refusing to do push-ups during a home workout.

Emilbek Zhunusov, 35, has been arrested after he allegedly attacked the child during their work out at home in Moscow, Russia, on April 16.

The incident was filmed by Zhunusov's 33-year-old wife who did nothing to stop the abuse as she 'saw nothing wrong with his upbringing methods', reports said.

Mrs Zhunusova reportedly shared the clip online claiming it shows 'the right way to educate a child'.

Zhunusova reportedly added: ''Everybody beat their children to raise a good person."

Distressing video footage appears to show the father hitting the little boy with fists before kicking him, smacking him and forcibly pushing him onto the floor.

He continues smacking him around the head as the child whimpers, cries and tries to shield his face with his hands.

The furious man then grabs a metal stick and threatens the child with it but a relative comes in and begs him to stop.

The footage ends with the father angrily kicking the boy, who is seen helplessly lying on the floor.

After the video caused huge public outrage, Zhunusova filmed a video message in which he explained himself to his critics.

According to reports, he said: ''I said to him [the boy] to do push-ups but he refused. I did not beat him hard. He did not get any injuries.

''The child didn't even feel anything and doesn't hold a grudge against me.

''Everybody beat their children to raise a good person. I was beating my own child, not somebody else's one.

''We are a friendly and happy family.''

However, Zhunusov's appeal did not convince the police who arrested him and launched a criminal case for torture of a minor against him.

On Wednesday the father was brought to the Kuntsevo District Court where he said to the judge: ''I did not beat my son. I educated him.''

Medical examinations revealed numerous bruises on the child's body, a prosecutor said during the hearing.

Emilbek Zhunusov was remanded in custody for the period of two months.

He and his wife left their native Kyrgyzstan for Russia in October last year and got a job as janitors in Moscow.
They have three children and are expecting their fourth.

The victim is now with his mother. The family will be monitored by local social services, according to Russian media.

The suspect faces up to seven years in prison if found guilty. The investigation continues.
