Florida man arrested with 2 pounds of fentanyl... enough to kill 500,000 people [photos]

A Florida man was arrested with enough of the narcotic fentanyl to kill half a million people, cops disclosed.

David Gayle, 43, was arrested for dealing drugs -- including two charges stemming from warrants for selling heroin within 1,000 feet of a church -- when detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant April 24 for his Brooksville home.

Investigators discovered more than two pounds of the synthetic drug fentanyl and methamphetamine, a mixture sometimes called a “goofball.”

This amount of fentanyl can “potentially” kill 500,000 people, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

“We can never measure what we prevent, but it is a very good bet that this quantity of fentanyl would have resulted in a number of overdose deaths right here in Hernando County,” said Sheriff Al Nienhuis in the release.

Cops also found more than almost seven grams of cocaine, a gram of oxycodone and 13 grams of hashish -- as well as some marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Gayle was charged one count of trafficking fentanyl and one count of trafficking methamphetamine as well as separate counts of possession for each of the other drugs found.

Jail records show Gayle has an extensive criminal background in Hernando County, mostly for cocaine possession, since 2011.

He was being held Tuesday in the Hernando County jail in lieu of a $215,000 bond and faces life in prison if convicted.

Sisters who were pregnant together introduce babies through a window in lockdown

When Jade Ullrich, 29, and her sister Georgia, 26, found out they would experience pregnancy together at the same time, and that their due dates were just two days apart, it ‘felt like a dream come true’.

But then the coronavirus pandemic hit, and visions of shared pregnancy photoshoots and celebrations fell apart.

The sisters were forced to isolate separately. When their babies finally arrived, they were introduced through a window.

Jade, who runs Bay Holiday Home Management with her fiancé Michael, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s my sisters first child so I really wanted to experience it closely with her, with antenatal classes and baby shopping trips.

‘We were waiting for the third trimester to organise a shopping trip to Exeter and book in a sisters bump photoshoot, which we never got to do.

After finding out they were both expecting in August 2019, both Georgia and Jade saw out their final weeks of pregnancy in lockdown.

Preparing to give birth in a pandemic was tough.

‘Beyond not making the memories we’d hoped for, I suffered terribly with anxiety around our planned home birth,’ Jade tells us. ‘As new guidelines were being published about pregnant women and their vulnerability to coronavirus and new restrictions were being placed upon expectant parents in hospitals, I began to wonder whether any of those changes would affect us, as well as desperately wanting to avoid the hospital all together even for scans, check ups and feeling anxious about ending up in hospital without my fiancé as my support.’

The anxiety was especially difficult for Jade, who had already gone through the trauma of experiencing bleeding and contractions early on in her pregnancy.

The fear of harm coming to her child was overwhelming.

‘In the first trimester, while we were celebrating my partner’s birthday I suddenly suffered a bleed with contractions,’ says Jade. ‘I was taken to hospital by ambulance and given morphine for the pain.

‘We were devastated when the consultants began to discuss the possibility of me having a miscarriage.

‘As I started to come to terms with the reality that I may have been miscarrying, I began to wonder how I’d cope watching my sister flourish through her pregnancy and birth my niece that would have been the same age as our new baby.

‘Finally, we got our scan, every doctor and consultant had been convinced that we were miscarrying with one even saying “It’ll be a miracle if this pregnancy continues” when I asked for their professional opinion on my symptoms.

‘Before we entered the scanning suite, Michael embraced me as he told me he was sure everything was going to be okay, we’d get our miracle.

‘Our lives changed in the space of five minutes, we opted to see the monitoring screen as they began to scan me and immediately we saw a heartbeat and both burst into tears of joy.

‘After the most stressful three days of our lives with little sign of hope, our little miracle was still with us.’

After months of worry, Jade welcomed Honey shortly after midnight on 21 April 2020, just weeks after the arrival of Georgia’s daughter on 3 April.

Georgia had planned for a hospital birth and was induced on 3 April. She was told on arrival at the hospital that new coronavirus guidelines prevented her partner, Dave, from joining her in the room.

He was able to return once Georgia was fully in labour and Jade provided additional support over FaceTime. Just a few hours later baby Scarlett arrived.

Jade was lucky to be able to stick to her plans of an at-home water birth despite the pandemic, and gave birth to her baby girl with just Michael and their midwife by her side.

Unfortunately the mum-of-three suffered from retained placenta after the four-hour labour, and had be taken to the hospital by an ambulance for treatment – but Jade calls this ‘a small price to pay for a happy healthy baby and a magical waterbirthing experience’.

Now the sisters are both adjusting to life as mothers to newborns in lockdown.

Seeing each other’s daughters for the first time had to take place through a window due to social distancing measures, with the sisters catching up from a two-metre distance in the garden.

Schools, churches, mosques, entertainment centres to remain close in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday said all schools, churches, mosques and entertainment centres, such as event centres, bars, nigh clubs and others will remain shut to check the spread of Coronavirus.

He said while some businesses and others resume gradually on Monday, those mentioned would remain closed till further notice.

The governor spoke at a news briefing to give update on Coronavirus in Lagos. The event was held in Marina, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

“All Schools and institutions at primary, secondary and tertiary levels remain physically closed. Students are expected to continue learning on the alternative online and media channels announced by the various institutions of learning.

“All places of worship (both formal and informal) are to remain closed from any form of congregational services or assemblage, until further notice.

“Our Muslim brothers and sisters taking part in the Ramadan Fast must observe all meals and prayers within their homes. In line with the pronouncement of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), no gatherings are allowed for Iftar, Suhur, and Tarawih; and the conduct of Tafsir is also suspended.

“Because the process of ablution involves touching the face, it is essential to ensure that the hands are clean. Ablution should, therefore, be preceded by the washing of hands with soap,” he said.

On entertainment centres, the governor said centres, such as event centers, cinemas, arcades, bars, casinos, day clubs, nightclubs and beaches would  remain closed till further notice.

“Swimming Pools, Gyms, Barber-shops, Spas, Beauty Salons, and all Public Parks, including those in private and residential estates, will continue to remain closed for another two weeks in the instance; at which point we will review and advise on the permissible opening date for these establishments.

“Residents’ Associations should please enjoin their members as well as operators of businesses within their association to adhere to these directives,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu added that all elderly persons, as well as all persons with underlying or pre-existing health conditions, were encouraged to stay indoors as much as is practicable; and request the assistance of those not in the vulnerable or elderly category to procure essential items needed.

How this drug Remdesivir is curing COVID-19, Trump wants it approved immediately

An experimental drug has proved effective against the new coronavirus in a major study, shortening the time it takes for patients to recover by four days on average, U.S. government and company officials announced Wednesday.

Gilead Sciences’ drug, Remdesivir is the first treatment to pass such a strict test against the virus, which has killed more than 218,000 people since it emerged late last year in China. Having a treatment could have a profound effect on the global pandemic.

The study, run by the National Institutes of Health, tested Remdesivir versus usual care in 1,063 hospitalized coronavirus patients around the world. At the White House, NIH's Dr. Anthony Fauci said the drug reduced the time it takes patients to recover by 31% — 11 days on average versus 15 days for those just given usual care.

He also said there was a trend toward fewer deaths among those on Remdesivir.

President Donald Trump has therefore called on the US Food and Drug Administration to move "as quickly as they can" to approve Remdesivir as a treatment for the dreaded coronavirus.

FG Requests ex-President Jonathan, Diezani’s Bank Statements

The federal government has requested for the account statements of some former public office holders to 10 banks.

Bloomberg reports that the public officers include former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience; former ministers of petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke and Rilwanu Lukman.

Nigeria is requesting “all documents concerning any transactions to, from, or for the benefit” of Jonathan and his wife between 2009 and the present day.

The banks listed include Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and New York branches of Deutsche Bank AG and United Bank for Africa Plc.

Court documents quote Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation, as saying information contained in the document will help an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to know individuals in the Process & Industrial Developments Ltd gas deal.

Although Malami the attorney general didn’t mention Jonathan as a subject of the EFCC probe, the former head of state appears alongside the ex-ministers in Nigeria’s proposed subpoenas.

“There is good reason to believe that ministers at the highest level were involved in a corrupt scheme to steal money from Nigeria,” Attorney General Abubakar Malami said in court filings submitted on March 24.

He said P&ID had no ability or intention of ever performing the contract, which required the company to build a gas processing plant and the government to supply gas.

Lorna Schofield, a US district judge, gave Nigeria permission to send copies of its application to the banks, eight of which had been served by April 15. However, the court has not decided whether to give Nigeria access to the documents.

In the court filings, Nigeria said the EFCC has not found direct evidence that the public officers received payments from P&ID or its affiliates.

It said the 10 banks are “likely to have processed US dollar transactions connected to P&ID’s operations as either correspondent banks or the New York branches of foreign lenders”.

Nigeria hopes to overturn a $9.7 billion judgement awarded against it for a breach of agreement in a gas project.

A spokesman for P&ID said Malami’s application is “nothing but an absurdly overbroad fishing expedition” arguing that the AGF manufactured a claim of fraud and bribery to avoid paying the judgement debt that amounts to about 30% of the country’s foreign reserves.

I have no accounts or property abroad - Goodluck Jonathan

A former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, has again said that he has no account or property abroad.

Mr Jonathan said this in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement, signed by Ikechukwu Eze, spokesman to Mr Jonathan, was issued in response to moves by the Nigerian government to subpoena bank records purportedly belonging to Mr Jonathan and his wife, Patience.

“Our attention has been drawn to international media reports to the effect that the Federal Government of Nigeria has subpoenaed bank records for former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan in the United States of America,” Mr Eze said.

“We aver that the Federal Government of Nigeria did not contact Dr. Jonathan or his wife before issuing these subpoenas. If they had, we would have advised them of the fact that you cannot subpoena what does not exist.

“We also remind the public that on March 5, 2014, during the swearing in of new ministers, then President Jonathan said “I am loyal to Nigeria’s economy. I don’t have accounts or property abroad.”

The statement said that between the period Mr Jonathan made claims of not operating foreign account and now, nothing has changed with regards to the former president.

‘Superhuman!!! Meet the 101-year-old woman who beats coronavirus after surviving cancer, Spanish flu pandemic

A New York woman who survived the Spanish influenza pandemic, cancer and sepsis, has beaten coronavirus at the age of 101.

Angelina Friedman’s family say they weren’t surprised when she overcame Covid-19 as she is a ‘survivor’ who has ‘superhuman DNA’.

The pensioner’s mother died giving birth to her on a passenger ship that was taking immigrants from Italy to New York City during the second wave of the Spanish flu in 1918.

One of 11 children, she was taken care of by two of her sisters and they eventually reunited with their father in Brooklyn, where she was raised.

She went on to marry and start a family with a man named Harold Friedman, but tragedy struck when they were both diagnosed with cancer.

Angelina’s husband sadly died, but she survived the illness and is now also the last of her siblings.

Her daughter Joanne Merola told Pix11: ‘My mother is a survivor. She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer.’

She added: ‘Everybody in the family lived until at least 95, except one uncle. My mother is a survivor. She is not human. She has superhuman DNA.’

The New Yorker, who now lives at the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and nursing Center in Lake Mohegan, was taken to hospital on March 21 for a minor medical procedure.

However, the procedure was cancelled when she tested positive for coronavirus, which has now taken 27,000 lives in the city.

Angelina returned to her nursing home to isolate and had an on-and-off fever for several weeks, but finally tested negative on April 20.

Merola hasn’t been able to visit her mum since February and says she is nearly deaf so they can’t talk on the phone.

But, regardless of the distance between them, she says she ‘marvels’ at her mother’s endurance.

She said: ‘If my mother could see this, I’d say, “Keep going, Ma. You’re going to outlive us all”.’

Angelina’s story comes after Keith Watson, 101, became one of the UK’s oldest people to survive Covid-19.

Barbara Briley, 86, who ‘survived Hitler, open-heart surgery, two replacement knees and two replacement hips’ also proved she is a fighter once again by beating coronavirus in March.
