Children Of Dead COVID-19 Patient & Pastor Praying For Him In Rivers All Test Positive

Two children of a deceased COVID-19 patient in Rivers and a pastor praying for his recovery have contracted the virus, Governor Nyesom Wike has declared.

The State has recorded 13 cases with two deaths.

Updating the State on efforts to contain the pandemic on Friday, Wike declared wearing of face-masks in public places have become mandatory across Rivers.

He blamed security operatives deployed to enforce borders’ closure for sabotaging the efforts, accusing them of receiving gratifications to allow people into the state.

He vowed the borders would enforce be tightened with the inauguration of a Task Force of on Border Closure comprising of Rivers indigenes.

He said: “The wearing of face mask in all public places is now compulsory throughout the state.”

“The State Security Council will meet in the next 24 hours to consider and approve necessary mitigating measures for commuters, including the deployment of government buses to shuttle designated public places.”

The Governor also read the riot acts to traditional rulers of recalcitrant suburbs, including traders who have consistently defied the closedown of market places and other areas.

He threatened he would not hesitate to totally lock down those areas. Areas facing the axe include Rumuokoro, Rumukurushi and Elimgbu, and the Oil Mill Market, which the Governor vowed could remain under lock and keys for the remainder of his tenure unless residents comply with the lockdown order.

Speaking on the transmission of the virus in Rivers State, Wike reinforced that it was fallout of sabotage by security agencies and their operatives.

“The logical conclusion therefore, is that the pattern of transmission of COVID-19 in the state is evidentially predicated on outside importation just as the rate of infection and progression is also relatively low and arithmetical, when considered from the date of the index case.

“Generally, we believe that unless there is a sudden and vertical slide into community transmission, we expect our COVID-19 infection and prevalent rate to continue along this low trajectory, which gives us the assurance that our hard work is paying off and Rivers State is certainly not in any dangerous position when compared to most other States, and we will never be by God’s special grace.

“This is not to say that we are at the peak of this crisis and that everything about the containment and transmission of COVID-19 is under control. No; we are not, because of the challenges occasioned primarily by the negative elements that continue to undermine and sabotage our efforts to protect our people from this disease.

“For instance, the 7th infected case was an offshore oil and gas worker who went and passed a night in a Lagos hotel before returning to Port Harcourt on the 9th of April 2020 with the aid of the security personnel manning our borders. When his symptoms started, he was admitted to a private hospital, (names withheld) on the 20th and discharged on the 21st of April 2020.

“Had the security agencies not compromised their responsibility at the borders, this man would have been prevented from coming into Port Harcourt with this virus and threaten the lives of other people for over two weeks before he was evacuated to the treatment center.”

Coronavirus survivors could need physiotherapy to learn to walk again, doctor warns

From a high fever to a dry cough, coronavirus is known to be associated with a number of unpleasant symptoms.

Now, one doctor has warned of a long-term effect of the virus, that can leave some patients needing physiotherapy.

Dr James Gill, a GP who has treated several coronavirus patients, explained that in the most severe cases, patients may need to re-learn how to walk.

Speaking to Sun Online, he said: “After 10 days needing help with breathing, possibly on a ventilator and sedated, we can’t just say, ‘you’ve won the battle, back to the world you go.

"Patients are going to need step-down care, with nutritionists getting them to eat well and physios helping them to mobilise again.”

Dr Gill compares recovering from coronavirus to recuperating after running a half marathon.

He explained: “Most people who complete a half marathon wouldn't want to do another one the following day, because of how much it hurts.

"But getting through the worst cases of the Covid-19 virus, and the effect it has on your body, is like doing a half marathon every day during your time in ICU. It is a colossal assault on the body.

"You are physically put through the wringer so the recovery process, depending on your age and fitness level, is going to be a slow process.

"Patients will suffer from fatigue, in the same way that somebody runs over the marathon line, then collapses and their legs turn to jelly, and they may need help learning how to walk again.”

Thankfully, most people who get coronavirus will only develop mild symptoms, including a cough and fever.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), people with mild symptoms should make a good and speedy recovery.

The fever should settle in less than a week, although the cough may linger for longer.

A WHO analysis found that it takes two weeks on average to recover.

Meghan Markle loses first High Court challenge over privacy claim against newspaper

Meghan Markle has lost the first round of her High Court battle against a newspaper over its publication of a "private and confidential" letter to her estranged father.

A judge has thrown out allegations in the Duchess of Sussex's privacy claim against Associated Newspapers in the first ruling in the case, but kept the door open for those parts to be revived.

A law firm representing Meghan, who is not appealing the decision, said "we are surprised" but insisted the duchess still has a "strong case" against the publisher.

She is suing the publisher over five articles - two in the Mail on Sunday and three on MailOnline - which were published in February 2019 and reproduced parts of a handwritten letter she sent to Thomas Markle in August 2018.

No date has been set for any further hearing in the case and it is not known when a full trial of the issues is expected to take place.

Whatsapp Video Call Upgraded To 8 Persons For Android and iPhone

WhatsApp has gone a step further, making it possible for its video call feature to admit as much as eight people simultaneously in a call.

Users of Android and iPhone Smartphone can now add twice the previous number of people allowed in a video call on WhatsApp.

Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp disclosed the latest quirk in a Video Call News last week. According to the report, the Video Call upgrade is now accessible for iOS and Andriod device users running the newest model of the application.

The new quirk on WhatsApp, which at the moment is the most actively used messaging application with over 2 billion users around the globe, provides a more suitable substitute for other Conference call platforms like Zoom, Houseparty, FaceTime, as well as Skype.

Nevertheless, though WhatsApp still dawdles with some of the big players in the game like Google Duo which allows 12 calls at a time; Google Meet with as much as 100 people for private users and 250 for business and educational purposes; Apple's FaceTime allowing 32 callers and Zoom permitting 500 callers on priced premium, the messaging app - WhatsApp is now in the category with Houseparty allowing 8 callers as well.

Also, the video call upgrade on WhatsApp is not exempted from the end-to-end encryption security that the app adopts to prevent externals including WhatsApp itself from viewing or listening to personal conversations. With the issues of cyber hacking, this upgrade is just right on time.

While the world is on lockdown from the Coronavirus pandemic, video call applications and platforms have become a basic necessity for catch-ups with family and friends as well as for business and educational communications.

Lagos Orders Civil Servants To Resume On Monday, Gives New Guidelines

Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola has conveyed the approval of the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu that all Offices in the State Secretariat, Alausa, as well as other Government establishments statewide, be opened for activities with effect from Monday, 4th May, 2020.

He said the approval, as contained in a circular issued on Thursday 30th of April, 2020, follows an earlier directive given by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari on the gradual easing of existing lockdown in Lagos State.

Muri-Okunola said, “It is worthy of note that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had in a Statewide broadcast on Wednesday evening, 29th April, 2020, issued some specific directives to Public Servants in the State on modalities for resumption after some weeks of the total lockdown of activities across the State”.

Listing some of the new protocols, the circular stated that officers on Grade Levels 12 and below must continue working from home, unless otherwise directed by their Accounting Officers, with the exception of Frontline Responders and other essential Health Workers, irrespective of Grade, as well as Enforcement Agencies.

The HoS urged Accounting Officers to carry out a Needs Assessment of critical staff, identify essential Officers and draw up a Flexible Work Roster for Officers on Grade Levels 13 and above, in compliance with the Physical Distancing Principle as stated by the World Health Organisation.

According to Muri-Okunola, sanitisers, as well as washable and reusable facemasks, must be distributed to Officers who are required to wear them in the office and all Public spaces while hand gloves and protective gears should be provided for cleaners. He stressed that non-usage of the items will attract strict penalties

In addition, the Head of Service instructed all Directors of Administration and Human Resource to ensure that the entire Office Environment is disinfected and kept clean always.

While advising officers in need of medical assistance to do so via consultation through telephone or online in order to minimise and eliminate visits to the Staff Clinic and Hospitals, the HoS implored all sick persons to stay away from the office.

He maintained that all public servants must abide by the 8 p.m to 6 a.m curfew pronounced by Mr. Governor, pointing out that the Secretariat and other Government Establishments would remain shut to members of the public and non-staff who are advised to conduct their affairs through other channels such as telephone, emails and online platforms.

Muri-Okunola also encouraged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), to ensure adequate personal hygiene by providing liquid soap with running water at all entrances and in toilets for regular and thorough washing of hands.

Trailer Loaded With Men Hidden Among Animals Busted In Kaduna

Security officials at the Kano-Kaduna border prevented two lorries transporting passengers from entering Kaduna State from Kano. The passengers were hidden among livestock, motorcycles and other goods.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said, “We got information that these lorries had come in from the Kaduna-Kano border and had progressed up to Gwargwaji in Zaria LGA. We then proceeded to nab them further along within the same local government."

“The passengers were cleverly concealed behind random goods, motorcycles and animals."

"Thankfully, once again we have got the better of them, and we have turned them back in compliance with the Kaduna State Government’s ban on inter-state travel."

“Operatives are actively enforcing the directives at all entry points, and passengers have similarly been intercepted from other routes and escorted out to the borders.”

Recall that the Kaduna State Government banned interstate travel as a measure to curb the spread of COVID 19.

Nigerian Doctor In US, Babafemi Taiwo, Leading Study For Remdesivir As COVID19 Cure

A bright doctor from the West African country of Nigeria, Babafemi Taiwo is leading part of a major study on antiviral drug Remdesivir appearing to treat COVID-19, the potentially deadly respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, which has killed more than 200,000 people around the world.

CNN interviewed Dr. Taiwo, whose name suggests he is a twin from the southwestern part of Nigeria, to discuss the promising results.

Remdesivir, the antiviral drug made by Gilead Sciences, appears to help coronavirus patients recover more quickly than no treatment at all, but it does not significantly reduce death, according to preliminary data from the National

“For the first time we have a large, well-conducted trial” showing a treatment helps, he said. “This is not a miracle drug … but it’s definitely better than anything we have.”

Fauci said the partial results showed that the drug had “a clear-cut significant positive effect,” shortening the time to hospital discharge by four days. By comparison, antiviral drugs for the flu shorten illness by about one day on average and only when started within a day or two of symptoms first appearing.

In the remdesivir study, about 8% of those on the drug died versus 11.6% of the comparison group, but the difference is not large enough for scientists to say the drug was the reason.

No information was given on side effects. Fauci said full results would be published in a medical journal soon. He said final numbers might change a bit but that the study’s overall conclusion would not.

Access Bank To Cut Staff Salaries, Sack 75% Of Workers

Herbert Wigwe, the group managing director of Access Bank, has mulled the bank’s planned mass retrenchment of its workforce over what he said was the outcome of the COVID-19 lockdown.

The bank boss who spoke via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff said those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are 75% of the bank’s staff, most of whom are outsourced and are offering “non-essential services.”

“We probably don’t need as many securitymen as required, even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tea girls. We don’t need all the cleaners. We don’t need all the tellers etcetera, etcetera,” Mr. Wigwe said in a video obtained by The Trent on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff. We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”

Mr. Herbert Wigwe, one of the principal conveners of CA-COVID, a coalition of Nigeria’s private sector against COVID-19 said the proposed measures are aimed at keeping the bank afloat in the face of the current economic realities.

21 die after consuming contaminated liquor in Mexico

Some 21 people have died and 13 others have been seriously injured in the Mexican state of Jalisco after ingesting contaminated liquor, regional authorities have said.

In total, 56 people have been affected in two municipalities in the western state since Saturday, state health official Huge Esparza said during a press conference, including the 21 who have died and 29 who have become ill.

The 13 who became seriously ill were transported via helicopter to hospitals in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, while the rest were discharged, Esparza said.

On Saturday, patients began presenting with “symptoms of blurred vision and/or vision loss, intense abdominal pain, difficulty breathing and convulsions,” he said.

They had ingested a form of cane alcohol purer than that made for drinking that was manufactured in neighboring Michoacan state.

Some 700 liters of the liquor were seized over the following days.

Laboratory tests showed the liquor contained a “high concentration” of methanol used “as an additive to liquid fuels,” according to another Jalisco health official, Denis Santiago

“This chemical agent is for industrial use,” he said.

Court remands cop who allegedly shot dead Rivers policewoman [photo]

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday, remanded a police sergeant, Bitrus Hosea, who allegedly shot dead a policewoman on duty in a correctional facility.

The policewoman, Lovender Elekwechi, also a sergeant, was allegedly shot in the head by Hosea at the Eneka Market roundabout in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state last Thursday.

The police said the offence was punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, claiming that he was not aware of the place called the Eneka roundabout, where the said incident was alleged to have occurred.

He said although he had served in Rivers State for almost three years, he was not familiar with the names of places he had visited in the course of his duty.

Hosea stated, “I am from Taraba State; I have served in Rivers State for almost three years. I am not familiar with the Eneka roundabout, I believe we passed through that place, but I am not sure of the name of the places we have worked.

“When we were on Eliozu Road, the fuel in our Hilux van was exhausted; while we parked there, another Hilux van came and parked in front of our van. Some persons in mufti started pointing at me that I was the one, who shot the policewoman; they started beating me and tried to snatch my rifle.

“But I refused to let go of my rifle, because I did not know them. One of them even cut me on my head with a machete and I fell down and lost my two phones. The Divisional Police Officer came and took away my rifle and said I had 15 rounds of ammunition left in it, but I told him that 29 rounds of ammunition were in the gun.

“The next thing I saw was my picture everywhere on the social media that I was the one who killed the female police sergeant.”

The Chief Magistrate, Ipalibo Iyiabo, remanded the accused person in a correctional facility and transferred the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice as the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Iyiabo adjourned the matter till Tuesday, May 26, 2020, for mention.

Drama as Customs rejects 1,800 bags of rice returned by Oyo

A drama played out between the officials of the Oyo State Government and men of the Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, Ibadan, on Wednesday as the Customs rejected the 1,800 bags of rice donated to the state by the Federal Government.

The officials of the Oyo State Government, led by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Jacob Ojemuyiwa, were denied entry at the main gate of the NIS zonal headquarters in Ibadan.

Recall that Dr Debo Akande, a Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, on Friday alleged that the rice was not good for human consumption.

The delegation was told on Wednesday to return the bags to the state government.

While addressing journalists, the commissioner said, “The state had written a letter to the Nigeria Customs Service indicating that the bags of the weevil-infested rice would be returned.”

The commissioner said the team would report back to the State Executive Council for necessary steps.

An official of NIS, who under condition of anonymity, said the delegate was turned back because the command had not received any directive to receive the rejected bags of rice.

This week, a mysterious coronavirus-related illness hit the headlines, after doctors were urgently alerted about a rise of cases in children.

At least 12 British children are thought to have been hit by the illness, which is being described as an ‘inflammatory syndrome’, similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Now reports of similar cases are flooding in from around the world, suggesting that the illness may now be widespread.

Doctors have now reported a total of almost 100 cases in the UK, the US, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

The first reports were in the UK, where there are believed to be at least 12 cases.

Meanwhile, France’s health minister, Olivier Veran, revealed this week that the illness has been seen in ‘about 15 children of all ages.’

Speaking to Franceinfo, Mr Veran also confirmed that cases have been reported in Spain, Italy and Switzerland, listing fever, digestive issues and vascular inflammation as key symptoms.
