Why I Referred To Abacha Loot As "Abacha's Assets" - AGF Malami

Abubakar Malami SAN, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has faulted those criticising him for describing the recently repatriated Abacha loots as "Abacha assets".

Malami in a statement said while the money was a loot, it automatically becomes an assets when it is returned to the federal government.

“Attention of the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has been drawn to needless media hype relating to purported characterization of the recovered assets associated with former Head of State, General Sani Abacha as “Abacha Assets”.

The office maintained that the choice of words was deliberate”.

“It is to be noted that by way of antecedence that Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has been consistently describing the recovered funds as “Abacha loot” at several fora during the process of recovery of the looted funds, particularly before the eventual repatriation of the funds”.

“The point needs to be made that when the seal of legitimacy was appended to the funds by way of repatriation it became an asset in favour of the Federal Government as a beneficial owner of same”.

“This is contained in a statement issued by Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday 6th May, 2020”.

Beyond the issues of verbal dexterity and vocal acrobatics, Nigerians should focus more on effective utilisation of the recovered looted funds in accordance with the content of the signed tripartite agreement in the interest of the Nigerian public”.

“It may interest the general public to note that there is a unit called Assets Recovery and Management Unit (ARMU) at the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice”.

“The use of the word “assets” in relation to the post-recovery of looted assets is to qualify same as Federal Government assets”.

“It is palpable that news about successful return of the looted assets have brought nightmares to nay-sayers and pessimists who wanted to frustrate the repatriation process through campaign of calumny. Hence resorting to rhetoric instead of burying the heads in shame”.

“The return of the looted funds demonstrates not only commendable efforts of the present government, but also a pointer to the level of confidence, trust and respect the international community accorded the Buhari-led Federal Government.”

"I Have No Apologies Using Chloroquine To Cure Coronavirus" - Governor Bala Mohammed

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed says he has no apologies for backing the use of Chroloquine and Zithromax to treat coronavirus patients in his state.

The ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who was the state’s CoVID-19 index case, had said he was treated with the drugs while in self-isolation, after he tested positive for the killer virus on March 23.

And Mohammed said he suffered criticism for authorising the use of the drugs to treat the disease in the state.

However, the governor said he did not recommend any self-medication.

He said, “Pertaining what I said about the use of chloroquine, Zinc, Zithromax and Vitamin C for the treatment of COVID-19. I was misquoted. I was once a COVID-19 patient. How did I get cured? I only made a recommendation and it was not a recommendation of the committee for COVID-19 in the state.

“I have no apologies for saying that I used chloroquine, Zinc, Zithromax and Vitamin C to get cured, but Allah cured me.

“It is not Chloroquine or anything, many countries are using modern medicine to combat the pandemic. It is common knowledge that COVID-19 has no vaccine and drugs, we are just groping in the dark. But if you have symptoms of fever, you take chloroquine and cure it.

“If you have symptoms of infection, you take Zithromax and cure it. If you have symptoms of weakness, you can take Panadol to cure it. You don’t need a doctor. However, doctors are prescribing.

“I did not take these drugs on my own, I took them based on the recommendation.”

One of the notorious cult leaders terrorizing Ikorodu and its environs, Mukaila, a.k.a “Actor”, has been arrested by Police operatives from the Tactical Unit of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos.

According to the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Hauwa Idris-Adamu, the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 2, AIG Ahmed lliyasu, due to the rise in nefarious cult activities in the Ikorodu axis of Lagos State, ordered operatives from the Tactical Units of the Zone to gather intelligence that could lead to the apprehension of the cult leaders and members terrorizing members of the public.

According to the statement, “It would be recalled that during the Presidential order for lockdown in Lagos State, Ogun State and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, some criminal elements took the advantage of that for their criminal activities, thereby terrorizing, robbing, and molesting members of the public”.

“The AIG then ordered for the arrest of the cult leaders. This led to the gathering of information about a suspected cult leader, Mukaila, who had been accused of terrorizing some communities like Maya, Itele, Igode and Adamo areas of Ikorodu, Lagos.”

Lockdown makes mum fix artificial nails on baby's fingers and people are upset [photo]

A mum has been slammed for putting long fake nails on her baby, with many labelling them "trashy".

Many users hit out at the nails, describing them as "awful", while others were extremely concerned about the child's safety, fearing she might poke them in her eyes.

The nails, which have been cut into the 'ballerina' shape, have been decorated with rose gold glitter, rhinestones and one has a Louis Vuitton logo stenciled on top.

The mum shared a snap of the acrylic nails on Reddit and has been inundated with comments.

The post was shared to Reddit's r/trashy thread which has two million users following it.

One said: "No, just no".

A second said: "So goddam trashy and awful."

"I didn’t realize what was wrong until I saw the hand" said a third.

And: "This is how your child gets hurt. Have this person never been around an infant before?"

Many parents have decided to give their kids a new look due to lockdown boredom, and TV star Laura Byrne used a brown eye pencil to give her gorgeous little girl Marlie-Mae some fleek brows, but, well, not fake long nails.

Watch terrifying moment cleaners washing skyscraper windows swing through the air after high winds hit their platform

Two Florida window washers were taken for a terrifying ride when wind gusts from a sudden storm sent their platform flying through the air as it hung off the side of a building.

The incident, which was caught on video by people standing on a nearby balcony, took place at the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida.

As wind howls in the background, the two workers can be seen hunkered down, holding on for dear life, as the window washing platform swings 180 degrees in the air before slamming against the building's giant glass windows.

When the platform steadies, one of the workers can be seen moving towards the center of the platform towards his coworker. They can be seen gesturing at each other as the platform sways in the wind.

The person who shot the video said that it had been 'sunny and calm' that afternoon, 'when suddenly without any warning, a fierce storm blew in.'

They said that the workers then spent the next 20 minutes trying to stabilize the platform, before being able to gain control over it and then climbing to safety onto a residence's balcony.

Juventus striker, Paulo Dybala finally recovers from Coronavirus

Juventus star Paulo Dybala has been given the all-clear over six weeks after contracting the coronavirus, the Italian champions confirmed on Wednesday.

"Dybala performed, as per protocol, a double check with diagnostic tests (swabs) for Coronavirus-Covid 19, which came back with negative results," Juventus said in a statement.

"The player has, therefore, recovered and will no longer be subjected to the home isolation regime."

Dybala, 26, was one of three Juventus players to test positive along with Italy defender Daniele Rugani and France's Blaise Matuidi.

Rugani was the first Italian top-flight footballer diagnosed with the virus on March 11, but both him and World Cup winner Matuidi recovered in mid-April.

Dybala was diagnosed on March 22, along with his girlfriend Oriana, who recovered sooner from the disease, which has killed nearly 30,000 people in Italy.

South Korea returns to normal activities as offices, museums, libraries open

South Korea returned largely to normal Wednesday as workers went back to offices, and museums and libraries reopened under eased social distancing rules after new coronavirus cases dropped to a trickle.

The South endured one of the worst early outbreaks of the disease outside China and while it never imposed a compulsory lockdown, strict social distancing had been widely observed since March.

Employees were urged to work from home where possible while the new school term was postponed from its March start.

Scores of events -- from K-pop concerts to sports seasons-- were delayed or cancelled, while museums and galleries were closed and religious services suspended.

But the South appears to have brought its outbreak under control thanks to an extensive “trace, test and treat” programme that has drawn widespread praise.

In a population of 51 million, its death toll is little more than 250, and new cases have slowed to just a handful -- 13 in the past three days, all of them arriving international passengers. More than 90 of the South’s imported cases are returning citizens.

At least 100 people visited the National Museum of Korea in Seoul on Wednesday morning, and the first visitors of the day -- a married couple -- were given a bouquet of flowers by staff.

“Many of our colleagues also came back to work today, so we are very excited about the reopening, we are very happy,” museum spokeswoman Lee Hyun-ju told AFP.

Some workers were bittersweet about going back to the office.

“I wanted to go home as soon as I sat down at my desk in the office today. But there is also this weird sense of stability,” wrote one Twitter poster.

Another tweeted: “I feel like my holidays are now over.”

The South reported two new infections on Wednesday, taking the total to 10,806, the Korea Centers for Disease Control said.

Some professional sports, including baseball and soccer, are starting their new seasons this week after being postponed over virus fears, although the matches will be played behind closed doors.

Schools are to reopen in stages starting from May 13.

Presidency May Approve Local Herbs To Treat Coronavirus

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire has said the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, is open to the possibility of using local herbs to fight the COVID19 pandemic.

The Minister of Health who made the disclosure when the Presidential Task Force on COVID19 briefed members of the House of Representatives, said that the Nigeria Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development must first certify any such remedy like the local herbs before it can be used to fight the Coronavirus.

He also added that those who claim to have found cure should subject it to test by the Nigeria Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development as local herbs can be categorised unto drugs that can cure the virus or those that can reduce the symptoms, adding that the body must be able to build the required antibodies to neutralise the virus.

The minister said, “before now, it was said that Chloroquine can destroy the virus. But the test is still going on in that regard. We have to test the efficacy of local drugs to see if they can kill the virus and also to find out that in the process of killing the virus, it can't affect the body. So, the Institute will carry out the required test on the local drugs to find out how they work”.

A palace source disclosed on Tuesday that Umar was rushed to the hospital on Monday night in a critical condition.

Married Man Tortured & Framed Up After Catching Senior Police Officer In Bed With His Wife

SR has uncovered how a Chief Superintendent of Police currently serving with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr Celestine Umeh, arrested, detained and framed-up a businessman, Mr Clement Asuquo Etim, and two others on trumped-up charges after he was caught in bed with the wife of Mr Etim in Uyo, the state capital.

It was gathered that CSP Umeh had been having an amorous affair with Mrs Lawrentia Asuquo, Etim's wife for a long time before he was finally caught at about 7:00pm on April 27, 2020 at their home at Aba Ukpo Estate, which is not too far from where the Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Uyo is located.

Confirming his ordeal to SaharaReporters, Etim said that the randy senior police officer had been having sexual affair with his wife for a long time and that he has been hoping for a day that he will catch them.

He said, “Whenever I travel to Calabar where I do my business, I usually receive reports that my wife invites her lover, CSP Umeh, to our matrimonial home to spend the night.

“They were having sexual affair in my house not minding the presence of my home help, a boy of 15 years old.”

According to Etim, luck however, ran out on the police officer and his wife when he got a tip off that CSP Umeh was in his house again to spend the night on April 27.

Following that information, Etim decided to return to Uyo.

He said, “On getting home in the evening last Monday, I caught the CSP with my wife enjoying themselves on the matrimonial bed.”

Etim said he was provoked on seeing CSP Umeh in bed with his wife and decided to confront him along with his cousin that came with him from Calabar as a witness.

Following the confrontation, the policeman ran out of Etim’s house with his wife and abandoned his SUV.

About two hours later, heavily armed officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed his house with his adulterous wife and arrested him, his cousin, Mr Patrick Okon Edet, and his home help, Christopher Bassey.

They were taken to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

On getting to the police command, Etim said that the police tortured him and falsely accused him, his cousin and home help of “assaulting” CSP Umeh and “stealing his mobile phones".

Etim was detained illegally from April 27 to 30th when he was temporarily released to go and search for the keys of the SUV belonging to CSP Umeh which was abandoned at his house.

However, the cousin and home help were detained in police custody from April 27 April to May 4 when they were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Uyo on trumped-up charges of assault and stealing.

Etim said that when he was released, he decided to go to the hospital for medical checks as blood kept coming out from one side of his ear as a result of torture by the Officer-in-Charge of General Investigation, a Superintendent of Police named Ekene Nwosu, and other policemen at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

He said that SP Ekene used a plank to hit his ear and also assaulted his home help and kept shouting at them for fighting with Umeh.

Surprisingly, on getting to his house after he was released, Etim met his three bedroom flat apartment empty.

He said his neighbours and estate management told him that his wife came with strangers and moved out all his properties and household items and relocated to an unknown location.

"When she was confronted by people in the estate, a certain SP Ekene instructed the estate management to allow my wife leave the estate with all my properties or face the consequences," he said.

According to the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, the three men were accused of hitting the police officer with a bottle.

Count two, three and four of the charges reads, “That you Clement Asuquo Etim, Patrick Okon Edet, and Christopher Bassey Effiong on the 27th day of April, 2020 at Aba-ukpo Estate, in the Uyo Magisterial District, unlawfully assaulted one Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police, by giving him fist blows all over his body and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 360 Of the Criminal Code, Cap.38, Vol, 2, Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria 2000.

"That you Clement Asuquo Etim, Patrick Okon Edet, and Christopher Bassey Effiong, on the 27th day of April, 2020 at Aba-ukpo Estate, in the Uyo Magisterial District, unlawfully assaulted one Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police, by smashing a bottle on his head which caused him harm. Thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 364 of the Criminal Code, Cap.38. Vol.2, of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, 2000.

"That you Clement Asuquo Etim, Patrick Okon Edet, and Christopher Bassey Effiong on the 27th day of April, 2020 at Aba-ukpo Estate, in the Uyo Magisterial District, did steal Samsung phones valued at N135,000 and infinity car key being property of one Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police, and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 408 of the Criminal Code."

Man who shot five family members dead called police to say 'I just massacred my family'

Man who shot five family members dead called the police to say 'I just massacred my family'.

Christopher Stokes, 43, was charged with five counts of first-degree homicide by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office for the Monday attack.

Each count carries a potential sentence of life in prison. He was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The complaint said Stokes identified himself on the 911 call and said 'the gun is still upstairs with the bodies.'

Stokes told the dispatcher he was sitting outside on the steps. He called 911 a second time and again confessed to killing his family with a shotgun, the complaint said.

When police arrived at the house, Stokes was sitting on the steps. When an officer asked Stokes if he had heard any shots, he responded, 'Yeah, I didn't hear them, I did them,' according to the complaint.

Police discovered a camouflaged 12-gauge shotgun in one of the bedrooms with 12 spent shotgun shells throughout the house.

The five victims were named as Demetrius Thomas, 14; Tera Agee, 16; Lakeitha Stokes, 17; Marcus Stokes, 19, and Teresa Thomas, 41.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said on Monday that an infant was found alive in the house.

He added that the crime scene sat in a lower income neighborhood and residents in the area were under great stress in the North Division neighborhood.

'The living conditions here-this is obviously a poor neighborhood and I don't know how many people lived in this house,' he said.

'I don't know if there was more than one family. But again, this is a stressful period and we'll have to wait and see exactly what happened here.'

The few hundred residents who crowded the crime scene were described as 'volatile.'

Distressed relatives cried while others comforted them, fights broke out, verbal arguments were had and paramedics treated a shocked family member.

Several people who approached the crime scene were not involved, but came to see the large police presence and the tragic scene unfolding outside.

Anonymous donor leaves $1million check at California hospital to thank staff for their hard work

An anonymous donor has left a $1million check at California hospital to thank staff for their hard work.

Medical providers at the Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz were cheering when they discovered the check designated entirely for employees - nurses, cleaning staff, lab techs, medical records, even mailroom staff and security guards who have worked there for at least a year.

Full-time staff get $800, part-timers receive $600.

The bonuses came alongside a note that showed appreciation for their hard work.

'Thank you for standing up (and staying up!) to care for our community,' it said. 'This humankindness is what makes you heroic.'

Hospital president Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz said the donation is a testament to their employee's clinical excellence and their tireless dedication.

After weeks of hard work, nursing supervisor Amy Loudon said she was amazed at the generosity of a stranger, and especially appreciative it's being shared with all employees this week.

'There are so many people who keep the hospital running,' she said.

'Nurses and doctors are getting the praise, but we couldn't do it without the staff who clean the floors, deliver supplies, fix machines, everything. It's a team, and I'm glad the whole team is getting a thank you.'

She said she plans to treat herself with her own bonus.

'I'm definitely going to spoil myself a little bit,' she said.

The do-gooder made the donation as California battles coronavirus. The state has seen over 53,000 cases and 2,194 deaths as of Monday morning.
