Presidency May Approve Local Herbs To Treat Coronavirus

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire has said the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, is open to the possibility of using local herbs to fight the COVID19 pandemic.

The Minister of Health who made the disclosure when the Presidential Task Force on COVID19 briefed members of the House of Representatives, said that the Nigeria Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development must first certify any such remedy like the local herbs before it can be used to fight the Coronavirus.

He also added that those who claim to have found cure should subject it to test by the Nigeria Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development as local herbs can be categorised unto drugs that can cure the virus or those that can reduce the symptoms, adding that the body must be able to build the required antibodies to neutralise the virus.

The minister said, “before now, it was said that Chloroquine can destroy the virus. But the test is still going on in that regard. We have to test the efficacy of local drugs to see if they can kill the virus and also to find out that in the process of killing the virus, it can't affect the body. So, the Institute will carry out the required test on the local drugs to find out how they work”.

Buhari's Royal Father, Emir Of Daura Exposed To Coronavirus, Rushed To ICU

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, has been hospitalised at the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre in Kastina State.

Daura is the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari.

A palace source disclosed on Tuesday that Umar was rushed to the hospital on Monday night in a critical condition.

The emir is said to have contracted COVID-19 from Kastina State index case, Dr Aminu Yakubu, a Daura-based private medical practitioner, who died of the virus last month.

SaharaReporters gathered that the late Yakubu was the personal physician of Emir Umar and had met with him and his first wife, Hajiya Binta Umar, shortly before he died.

The wife also died two weeks after.

“Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar, was last night rushed to FMC Katsina. Presently, all of us in the palace have been told to go on self-isolation.

“The Katsina State index case, that doctor that died, interacted with the emir and his first wife, Hajia Binta, who is now dead. The index case was the personal doctor of the emir.

“The emir was advised to self-isolate after the index case died but he dismissed it and allowed free movement in the palace,” the source told SaharaReporters.

Dr Mustapha Inuwa, Secretary to the State Government, had on Monday said there have been some COVID-19 positive cases from the palace, while samples of 89 people had been taken from the place for screening by the NCDC.

Married Man Tortured & Framed Up After Catching Senior Police Officer In Bed With His Wife

SR has uncovered how a Chief Superintendent of Police currently serving with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr Celestine Umeh, arrested, detained and framed-up a businessman, Mr Clement Asuquo Etim, and two others on trumped-up charges after he was caught in bed with the wife of Mr Etim in Uyo, the state capital.

It was gathered that CSP Umeh had been having an amorous affair with Mrs Lawrentia Asuquo, Etim's wife for a long time before he was finally caught at about 7:00pm on April 27, 2020 at their home at Aba Ukpo Estate, which is not too far from where the Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Uyo is located.

Confirming his ordeal to SaharaReporters, Etim said that the randy senior police officer had been having sexual affair with his wife for a long time and that he has been hoping for a day that he will catch them.

He said, “Whenever I travel to Calabar where I do my business, I usually receive reports that my wife invites her lover, CSP Umeh, to our matrimonial home to spend the night.

“They were having sexual affair in my house not minding the presence of my home help, a boy of 15 years old.”

According to Etim, luck however, ran out on the police officer and his wife when he got a tip off that CSP Umeh was in his house again to spend the night on April 27.

Following that information, Etim decided to return to Uyo.

He said, “On getting home in the evening last Monday, I caught the CSP with my wife enjoying themselves on the matrimonial bed.”

Etim said he was provoked on seeing CSP Umeh in bed with his wife and decided to confront him along with his cousin that came with him from Calabar as a witness.

Following the confrontation, the policeman ran out of Etim’s house with his wife and abandoned his SUV.

About two hours later, heavily armed officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed his house with his adulterous wife and arrested him, his cousin, Mr Patrick Okon Edet, and his home help, Christopher Bassey.

They were taken to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

On getting to the police command, Etim said that the police tortured him and falsely accused him, his cousin and home help of “assaulting” CSP Umeh and “stealing his mobile phones".

Etim was detained illegally from April 27 to 30th when he was temporarily released to go and search for the keys of the SUV belonging to CSP Umeh which was abandoned at his house.

However, the cousin and home help were detained in police custody from April 27 April to May 4 when they were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Uyo on trumped-up charges of assault and stealing.

Etim said that when he was released, he decided to go to the hospital for medical checks as blood kept coming out from one side of his ear as a result of torture by the Officer-in-Charge of General Investigation, a Superintendent of Police named Ekene Nwosu, and other policemen at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

He said that SP Ekene used a plank to hit his ear and also assaulted his home help and kept shouting at them for fighting with Umeh.

Surprisingly, on getting to his house after he was released, Etim met his three bedroom flat apartment empty.

He said his neighbours and estate management told him that his wife came with strangers and moved out all his properties and household items and relocated to an unknown location.

"When she was confronted by people in the estate, a certain SP Ekene instructed the estate management to allow my wife leave the estate with all my properties or face the consequences," he said.

According to the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, the three men were accused of hitting the police officer with a bottle.

Count two, three and four of the charges reads, “That you Clement Asuquo Etim, Patrick Okon Edet, and Christopher Bassey Effiong on the 27th day of April, 2020 at Aba-ukpo Estate, in the Uyo Magisterial District, unlawfully assaulted one Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police, by giving him fist blows all over his body and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 360 Of the Criminal Code, Cap.38, Vol, 2, Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria 2000.

"That you Clement Asuquo Etim, Patrick Okon Edet, and Christopher Bassey Effiong, on the 27th day of April, 2020 at Aba-ukpo Estate, in the Uyo Magisterial District, unlawfully assaulted one Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police, by smashing a bottle on his head which caused him harm. Thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 364 of the Criminal Code, Cap.38. Vol.2, of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, 2000.

"That you Clement Asuquo Etim, Patrick Okon Edet, and Christopher Bassey Effiong on the 27th day of April, 2020 at Aba-ukpo Estate, in the Uyo Magisterial District, did steal Samsung phones valued at N135,000 and infinity car key being property of one Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police, and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 408 of the Criminal Code."

Man who shot five family members dead called police to say 'I just massacred my family'

Man who shot five family members dead called the police to say 'I just massacred my family'.

Christopher Stokes, 43, was charged with five counts of first-degree homicide by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office for the Monday attack.

Each count carries a potential sentence of life in prison. He was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The complaint said Stokes identified himself on the 911 call and said 'the gun is still upstairs with the bodies.'

Stokes told the dispatcher he was sitting outside on the steps. He called 911 a second time and again confessed to killing his family with a shotgun, the complaint said.

When police arrived at the house, Stokes was sitting on the steps. When an officer asked Stokes if he had heard any shots, he responded, 'Yeah, I didn't hear them, I did them,' according to the complaint.

Police discovered a camouflaged 12-gauge shotgun in one of the bedrooms with 12 spent shotgun shells throughout the house.

The five victims were named as Demetrius Thomas, 14; Tera Agee, 16; Lakeitha Stokes, 17; Marcus Stokes, 19, and Teresa Thomas, 41.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said on Monday that an infant was found alive in the house.

He added that the crime scene sat in a lower income neighborhood and residents in the area were under great stress in the North Division neighborhood.

'The living conditions here-this is obviously a poor neighborhood and I don't know how many people lived in this house,' he said.

'I don't know if there was more than one family. But again, this is a stressful period and we'll have to wait and see exactly what happened here.'

The few hundred residents who crowded the crime scene were described as 'volatile.'

Distressed relatives cried while others comforted them, fights broke out, verbal arguments were had and paramedics treated a shocked family member.

Several people who approached the crime scene were not involved, but came to see the large police presence and the tragic scene unfolding outside.

Anonymous donor leaves $1million check at California hospital to thank staff for their hard work

An anonymous donor has left a $1million check at California hospital to thank staff for their hard work.

Medical providers at the Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz were cheering when they discovered the check designated entirely for employees - nurses, cleaning staff, lab techs, medical records, even mailroom staff and security guards who have worked there for at least a year.

Full-time staff get $800, part-timers receive $600.

The bonuses came alongside a note that showed appreciation for their hard work.

'Thank you for standing up (and staying up!) to care for our community,' it said. 'This humankindness is what makes you heroic.'

Hospital president Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz said the donation is a testament to their employee's clinical excellence and their tireless dedication.

After weeks of hard work, nursing supervisor Amy Loudon said she was amazed at the generosity of a stranger, and especially appreciative it's being shared with all employees this week.

'There are so many people who keep the hospital running,' she said.

'Nurses and doctors are getting the praise, but we couldn't do it without the staff who clean the floors, deliver supplies, fix machines, everything. It's a team, and I'm glad the whole team is getting a thank you.'

She said she plans to treat herself with her own bonus.

'I'm definitely going to spoil myself a little bit,' she said.

The do-gooder made the donation as California battles coronavirus. The state has seen over 53,000 cases and 2,194 deaths as of Monday morning.

This haunted house is being given away as people are too scared to live in it [photos]

Anyone would jump at the chance to own a free house, right?

Well, perhaps not if it came with a catch – a very spooky catch.

A rundown four-bedroom home in Youngsville, Louisiana, is struggling to sell because locals claim the house is haunted with spirits.

Estate agent Sylvia McLain, the co-owner of McLain Investments, is even struggling to give away the haunted property for free.

When Sylvia posted an advert for the free house on Facebook, she was flooded with comments from locals and former residents sharing supernatural tales. Some even compared it to the house from The Amityville Horror.

A woman named Gypsy Dawn said: ‘I was the last tenant that lived there before it was abandoned. The property was heaven but that house is quite unsettling if you don’t enjoy communing with the spirit world because they speak loudly.’

Former resident Dawn Vallot DeClout also replied to the post, claiming that the ghost that haunts the house is her great grandmother, Adele. Her family owned the plot the house was built on from 1860 for more than 100 years.

Dawn said: ‘We believe [Adele] is the ghost, but she’s not menacing at all. She was probably like 4ft 9in and weighed about 100lb.

‘She lived to be almost 90 and she was always digging in the pots, like when you have something on the stove and someone goes and looks in the pot and stirs it around.

‘She was well-known for that, and so when we lived there, we used to hear her all the time jangling the pots when we had something on the stove.

‘You could hear somebody picking up the lid but there was nobody in the kitchen.’

Sylvia has said anyone interested can take ownership of the house, free of charge, but they would have to relocate the house at their own cost

One potential buyer offered to take the property but declined after they found out how much it would be to move it.

The owner predicts it would cost around $80,000 to take it apart, move it, and reassemble it, or $40,000 to move it somewhere close by.

One dead and two injured following ‘water buffalo attack’ in Wales

A man has died and two people have been injured after reportedly being attacked by a water buffalo, Gwent Police said.

Emergency services were called to a commercial property in Gwehelog, Monmouthshire, at about 2.50pm on Tuesday, following reports that two men and a woman had been attacked by the animal.

A man, 57, from the Gwehelog area, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Wales Ambulance Service. A second man, 19, believed to be his son, was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales.

The teenager sustained critical injuries during the incident, a spokesperson for Gwent Police said.

A woman, 22, also from the Gwehelog area, sustained a serious injury to her leg, but her condition has not been described as critical. She was been taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for treatment by the Wales Ambulance Service.

The spokesperson said the water buffalo was ‘destroyed’ following the attack.

It is not known exactly where the incident took place, but a farm in the area keeps water buffalo to make soap out of their milk.

Officers tending to the scene also received assistance from the National Police Air Service (NPAS).

Motorists sleep on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway amid curfew

Hundreds of motorists passed the night at the Kara/Berger end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday/ Tuesday, as they were stranded following the enforcement of the curfew imposed on Lagos and Ogun states as well as the Federal Capital Territory by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

While some of the motorists lamented spending hours for journeys that should have lasted minutes, others decried passing the night in their vehicles after being stuck in the gridlock that followed the closure of the Berger boundary between Lagos and Ogun states.

Punch Metro observed that security agents manned both the inward and outward lanes of the road at Berger.

Police personnel from Lagos and Ogun state commands, officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Officers and men of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps were seen at the checkpoint.

Punch correspondent observed that the uncompromising security personnel prevented vehicles, including those conveying foodstuffs and tankers coming into Lagos to load fuel as well as those on essential duty from coming into the state, while those exiting Lagos had a similar experience.

A motorist, Adedimeji Okanlawon, said the policemen at the checkpoint inward Lagos denied him passage despite informing them that he was an essential worker, adding that he had to pass the night in his vehicle.

Okanlawon stated, “I left the office in Arepo around midnight and the road was free until I got to the Sparklight Estate area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. I initially thought that the gridlock was because the policemen were checking for essential workers, but I became worried when there was no movement for hours.

“I disembarked from my car and trekked from OPIC to the Berger checkpoint, where I saw a policeman, who said the road would not be opened until 6am.

“I showed him my ID card, but he ignored me; so, I trekked back to where I parked and passed the night in my car. But a lot of people conveying food items, charcoal and other materials, as well as tankers were among those stuck in the gridlock. I saw a lot of motorists sleeping on the road as there was no movement. I left the place at exactly 6.45am.”

Another motorist, Daramola Adebutu, said many people left their places of work late despite being aware of the curfew, adding that the roadblock at Berger spilled over to the Third Mainland Bridge, Alausa and Agidingbi areas of Lagos.

In the Sango area of Ogun State, motorists plying the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway also faced a similar situation as security agents at the toll gate area prevented them from gaining entry into the state.

A motorist, who identified himself simply as Idris, said he and other motorists were left with no option but to drive on the kerb because the policemen had barricaded the regular route.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said, “On Monday, we had issues all over; the roads were shut because of the curfew; and when we shut down non-essential movement, essential workers were trapped in the gridlock. But eventually, we paved a way for them to pass.

“Today (Tuesday), we went around with the Commissioner of Police to assess the situation and the checkpoint at Berger was shifted to a wider area to accommodate more vehicular movement.

“Both the Lagos and Ogun CPs, the Deputy Commissioners for Operations in the states, the DC Operations from the Zone 2 and Area Commanders in both states were present when the decision was made to ease the situation.”

Tragedy was, however, averted when two tankers laden with diesel and kerosene collided on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday.

Punch Metro gathered that the tanker drivers were driving on top speed when the collision occurred around 8am, and the impact made the diesel-laden tanker to spill its content on the road.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyitolu, said there was no loss of life, adding that emergency responders blanketed the area to forestall a secondary accident.

Oke-Osanyitolu said, “Upon the arrival of the agency’s response team at the scene of the incident, it was observed that there was an accident involving a Mack tanker conveying 50,000 litres of kerosene with number plate AGB 447 XA, and another Mack tanker laden with 45,000 litres of diesel with number plate KRD 467 XZ.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the two tankers had a collision while on top speed as a result of reckless driving. The subsequent impact led the diesel-laden tanker to subsequently spill its content on the road.

“No casualty was recorded. However, the LASEMA team and the Lagos State Fire Service officials are on the ground blanketing the affected areas to forestall the occurrence of any secondary accident. Recovery operation is ongoing.”
