This Plant Used For Madagascar COVID-19 Drug Is In Nigeria

The Federal Government has said the extract of the plant used for the herbal drug produced by the Republic of Madagascar for the prevention and cure of coronavirus (COVID-19), grows in the country.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said this on Monday in Abuja, while answering questions, at the 29th joint national briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19.

According to him, the herbal drug will be subjected to analysis by the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) to determine its efficacy and safety before it can be adopted for the treatment of COVID-19.

"We are going to get samples of the herb of the botanical product for analyses and also probably use that opportunity to speak with the health authorities there particularly the scientific community on how they use it. We will also give it to the research community here with us to examine and see what they can do with it.

“We understand that it is something called Artemisia Annua, which also grows here. But we would like to get that sample and compare it with the strain here to know if they are exactly identical or similar and then see what properties it has.

“It will be subjected to analysis to find out what works in there and how it works and is used in getting a cure. All countries around the world are interested in finding a cure and we are not different. So, we will look at all options and promises that have been made.

"Before we give any of these medicines to our people, we will make sure they are actually safe and that they work,” Ehanire said.

The Madagascar President, Andry Rajoelina, had officially launched a locally produced medicine he believes can prevent and cure patients suffering from COVID-19 ailment.

The drug was developed by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research and branded COVID Organics.

Lagos-based doctor tests positive to coronavirus in Osun

A Lagos-based medical doctor, who came into Osun State on Saturday to be with his family has tested positive to coronavirus.

A statement on Monday by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu, also disclosed that on arrival in the state, the said doctor checked into our Isolation Centre at Asubiaro, Osogbo.

Isamotu said the doctor suspected that he had been infected with the virus and checked himself into the State Isolation and Treatment Centre at Asubiaro, Osogbo where his sample was immediately taken and sent for testing at the NCDC accredited Testing Centre in Ede.

“The state yesterday recorded another case of the COVID-19. He is a medical doctor based in Lagos who came into the State on Saturday to be with his family and suspected he was having the virus on arrival and checked into our Isolation Centre at Asubiaro rather than going home.

“His sample was collected and sent for testing. His result came out on Sunday and turned positive.

“We are glad that he didn’t have contact with anyone but took the initiative to check himself into our isolation centre immediately he arrived in Osun. That way, the virus was contained,” Isamotu said.

On the measures to contain the virus in the state, Isamotu urged the residents to adhere strictly to the dusk-to-dawn curfew from Monday to Thursday and the total lockdown on Friday to Sunday put in place by the State government.

He also appealed to residents not to receive visitors, especially those coming from outside the state, saying receiving such visitors might put their lives in danger.

“The cases recorded in the State recently were of those who came into the State and I want to appeal to our people to stop encouraging their relatives or friends to return to Osun as this might endanger the lives of our people,” he concluded.

We are owed seven months salaries – Abuja doctors

Doctors employed by the Federal Capital Territory last year are being owed salaries between three to seven months, the Association of Resident Doctors, FCT, has said.

The doctors also complained about suspicious deductions from the salaries of old doctors after they were registered on Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

This is contained in a communiqué issued after a virtual council meeting on May 7, 2020 and signed by Dr. Mustapha Ibrahim, the General Secretary of ARDFCTA.

The doctors said they would have embarked on a strike on May 1, 2020, but decided to put it on hold.

The document read in part, “The council noted with dismay the haphazard nature in which the April, 2020 salaries was paid by IPPIS with no prior sensitisation or explanation despite the April 30 deadline for all matters connected therewith be resolved.

“Most newly employed members were still omitted in the payment of April, 2020 salaries bringing the total months owed them to between three-seven months. There is an established community transmission of COVID 19 in the FCT with four of our members already exposed following the confirmation of two cases at Wuse District Hospital.

“Despite Management’s assertion of provision of adequate PPEs across all the general hospitals, it was noted by council that some of these PPEs are still been hoarded by some units as members do not readily access these apparels when attending to suspected cases.

“Exposed members are subjected to a lot of psychological trauma during this period of self-isolation.”

Man stabs, kills heavily pregnant girlfriend, 27, in public

Police in Machakos have launched a hunt for a youthful man who fatally stabbed his heavily pregnant girlfriend, 27, on Saturday morning.

The woman, who works at one of the hotels at Mutituni Market in Machakos Town, Kenya was on her way to work at around 7am, when her boyfriend, identified only as Mutiso alias Kamondo, confronted her before whipping out a knife and stabbing her several times in the chest.

Though the exact term of the woman’s pregnancy wasn’t immediately ascertained, police say she was in her last trimester (between 7 and 9 months of pregnancy).

Police are yet to be establish why Mutiso killed his lover, though it is suspected the two had protracted relationship problems.

Residents familiar with the couple’s relationship said the lovers’ affair got turbulent the moment the 27-year-old woman got pregnant.

“They would argue time and again, and at one point they even lived separately before reuniting again,” the pair’s neighbour told K24 Digital.

Both the suspect and the victim worked at Makutano hotel in Mutituni Market.

A single yelp by the victim caught the attention of other passersby, who rushed to the scene and found the victim lying on the ground with blood gushing from her chest.

“She had been stabbed in the right side of her chest, and in the back,” said a witness.

Attempts to chase the suspect bore no fruit as he outran his pursuers.

In the last two months, the lovers were not staying together in the same house, though they shared a compound.

“The man rented a house adjacent to his girlfriend’s,” said a neighbour.

The victim’s body was taken from the scene at 9am and taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital morgue. The knife that the suspect used in killing his lover was also found at the scene.

Machakos County Police Commander, Karanja Muiruri, told K24 Digital that a search for the suspect is ongoing.

“We do not know where he ran to, but one thing we’re sure of, is that we’ll catch him,” said Karanja.

The incident drew anger in residents whom we spoke to, with all calling for the arrest and prosecution of Mutiso, whom they termed as a “non-native of Mutitini area”.

“As a parent, I am highly disappointed by what the young man did. Violence should not be an option when it comes to resolving relationship issues. His action forced us to close shop and leave for our homes; it was so horrifying and unfortunate,” said Ruth Mutala, a trader at Mutituni Market.
